De l'auscultation médiate ou traité du diagnostic des maladies du poumon et du coeur, fondé principalement sur ce nouveau moyen d'exploration

Contemporary half calf with spine gilt, decor. and red and green label (vol. 2 with small defect at top spine). Some occasional light foxing; very fine copies in beautiful binding. ----PMM 280; Dibner 129; Norman 1253; Heirs of Hippocrates 1364; Garrison-Morton 2673; Osler 1318; Wellcome III, p. 429 - FIRST EDITION, first state, with the second leaf of the dedication (a*2) uncancelled. A LANDMARK WORK IN THE DIAGNOSIS OF DISEASES OF THE LUNGS AND HEART, ANNOUNCING THE INVENTION OF THE STETHOSCOPE. As head physican at the Necker Hospital in Paris, Laennec's investigations of emphysema, tuberculosis, and other chest diseases inspired him to improvise a technological innovation that would revolutionize physical diagnosis. Although auscultation had been known since the days of Hippocrates, and diagnostic percussion of the chest had most recently been advocated by Auenbruegger, these methods were often inconvenient and were subject to frequent misinterpretation. Experimentation with a rolled paper cylinder led Laennec to invent a more reliable diagnostic instrument, a foot-long tube of cedar wood, which amplified the sounds of his patients' hearts and lungs. Even more impressive than his invention of this brilliantly simple instrument, however, were the uses Laennec made of it: through methodical observation he taught himself the significance of the various sounds produced by the movements of the heart and lungs and drew up a clear and detailed classification system correlating. Fine.

Contemporary full red straight-grained morocco, covers tooled in gilt and blind with wide double-fillet border compartments and Greek key and feather and trefoil rolls, corner compartments stamped with gilt diamond and floral tool, smooth spine divided into five compartments, lettered in one, the rest gilt with small floral tools, board edges and turn-ins gilt with Greek key and floral rolls, marbled endpapers, a.e.g. Some spotting and light staining to text, else fine, in custom red cloth slipcase and chemise. First edition of parts I-V. iv, [5]-94; [97]-169, [1]; [171]-210, 203-242; [243]-301, [1], [ii], [303]-335, [1]; [337]-443, [1] pp., with two examples of printed slip warning against unauthorized printings tipped-in to No. II. 8vo. Early American Binding by John Roulstone. A fine early American morocco extra binding by the Boston bookbinder John Roulstone (c. 1777-1826, fl. 1802-1825). Roulstone was one of only four early American binders to sign his bindings (Lightbody, Legge, and Potter the others), and his commission work for the Harvard College Library, including one signed binding, has greatly facilitated the identification of his bindings (cf. French, "John Roulstone's Harvard Bindings," Bookbinding in Early America). In the present example, which is unsigned, the cover border tooling (Greek key and feather) and cornerpieces match that on Roulstone's signed binding of a syllabus of the lectures of Francis Nicholls presented to Harvard by Ward Nicholas Boylston (ibid, p. 91, fig. 30). French suggests that Roulstone apprenticed, or was at least influenced, by English émigré and fellow Boston bookbinder Henry Bilson Legge. The theory would account for a similarity of design and tooling and the pronounced "Englishness" of Roulstone's work. Roulstone was active for more than twenty years and achieved a certain level of success. In addition to his work for Harvard, he bound for the Boston Athenæum and a number of private citizens, and when he died in 1826 of consumption, his estate was valued at $13,000. French praises Roulstone as "well known in his community and very likely the best binder of his time and place" (p. 117). The present example, which includes first editions of parts I-V of Washington Irving's Sketch Book (a further two parts were later published in 1820), is a fine example of Roulstone's "extra binding" work - full straight-grained morocco, richly tooled in gilt, with board edges and turn-ins gilt, all edges gilt, and marbled endpapers. It was formerly in the American binding collection of Michael Papantonio, who mentions this book specifically in his "The Dealer as Collector": "About 1940 I sold a copy of Washington Irving's Sketchbook bound in red morocco by John Roulstone. I felt that I could not afford to keep it. In the early 1950s I was called in to look at a collection in a New York apartment, and among the books there was the Sketchbook. Needless to say it became part of my collection." All but six of Papantonio's early American bindings are now at the American Antiquarian Society. The Sketchbook was purchased privately in 1999 from Ximenes, which had been instrumental in selling off the remains of Papantonio's collection after his death. The binding is decorated with the following tools, as identified by French. Rolls: T87 (Greek key and feather), T95 (trefoil and bead), T86 (circle and star), T100 (cemicircle) Stamps: T118 (diamond and flower). Papantonio, Early American Bindings 37; BAL 10106; Blackburn, 15-23 (CHECK). Provenance: Norris Marshall Jones (letterpress bookplate); Horatio Robinson (presentation inscription, "Presented to Horatio Robinson from his friend, Norris Marshall Jones. May 12th 1820"); Richard Montgomery Gilchrist Potter (red morocco booklabel); Michael Papantonio (Early American Bookbindings, no. 37)

Boston: Samuel T. Armstrong, 1819. Slim octavo, 40, xvi pages. Rare and historically significant sermon delivered at the ordination of Hiram Bingham and Asa Thurston shortly before their departure to Hawaii as first envoy of the American Board of Foreign Missions: 'this rare pamphlet may be cited as the inception of the Christian missionary movement in Hawaii' (Hill). The missionaries were accompanied by five assistants, their wives and three native teachers, all listed with respective roles allocated: interestingly the printer for the first Hawaiian mission press, Mr Elisha Loomis, is listed amongst the assistants. The work is rich in references to the first Hawaiian born missionary Henry Obookiah who was closely associated with the community at Goshen and a founding member of the mission school. Obookiah died in 1818, shortly before the departure of the mission to Hawaii, and the sadness and disappointment of the congregation is reflected throughout this rare book. The sermon was published under the auspices of the Mission School where the native teachers were trained alongside royalty: 'George Tamoree - son of Tamoree, king of Atooi and Oneeheow, two of the Sandwich Islands, who has been educated with the other Native Youths, at the foreign Mission School, Cornwall, Connecticut returns with the Mission to his Father.'This copy was once in the possession of Statham Clary, with his ink manuscript note to the title-page. Clary was a Presbyterian missionary who was dispatched on a "domestic mission" to Bath, New York State, a frontier town with a belligerent population that lacked a church until Clary arrived in 1824. Here he achieved modest success under difficult circumstances, converting a handful of folk to his church through incessant labour and gifted sermons. Title-page a little thumbed with a few closed tears, last leaf a little chipped, of few spots of foxing yet good, disbound lacking wrappers.

Letters written during a ten years’ residence at the court of Tripoli; published from the originals in the possession of the family of the Late Richard Tully, Esq., The British Consul. Comprising authentic memoirs and anecdotes of the reigning Bashaw, his family, and other persons of distinction; also an account of the domestic manners of the Moors, Arabs, and Turks

Two volumes. Third edition. Printed for Henry Colburn, Conduit Street. London. 1819. 8vo. xv, 375, 396pp. 7 hand coloured aquatint plates, 1 folding map. Full calf by E. Pover, Chester, raised banding to spines, gilt ornaments and spine rules, gilt ornament and blind stamping ornamentation to boards. Gauffered in gilt to edges. Inner gilt dentelles. Spines relaid. Marbled endpapers, (fep to vol I with some areas of surface loss). All edges marbled. Some offsetting of plates. Small corner torn II,131. Silk book markers. Bookplate of Hugh, Duke of Westminster, Eaton, 1884. Richard Tully was the British Consul at Tripoli from 1783 to 1793, and, according to the preface of the first edition, these letters were written by his sister; however, the preface to this edition states that Tully's sister-in-law was the author. The author's identity has always been a mystery: it is unlikely that Richard Tully's sister-in-law would be named Miss Tully, and there is no record of a sister, nor of another family member residing in Tripoli. The final entry is dated April 30, 1795, Gibraltar. "It reads: Since you must have had my letters with the journal of Tripoli..." Louisa Maria Tully (daughter of Richard Tully) married Alexander Simpson on 19 March 1795 in Gibraltar. Her sister, Anne, married Gaspar Gomez de la Serna Perez de Beas, having four children before his death in 1808, residing in Minorca. Both daughters were fluent in Arabic, both were intimate with the court of Triploi, regarded as daughters of the Court. Mrs Tully is referred to in the third person so she may be discounted as the author. The first person author[s] are variably "we" or "I". Byron admitted plagiarism "by the way, much of the description of the furniture, in Canto Third, is Taken from Tully's Tripoli (pray note this)… Remember I never meant to conceal this at all." Provenance: From the library of Hugh, Duke of Westminster, with his bookplate: Eaton 1884. Hugh Lupus Grosvenor, 1st Duke of Westminster KG, PC, JP (1825-1899) English landowner, politician and racehorse owner. He appointed Alfred Waterhouse to design the new hall at Eaton in 1870. The redesigned library was 90 feet (27m) long. The work took 12 years to complete, and cost £803,000 (£73 million today) At his death he was considered the richest man in Britain.

An Address, delivered at a meeting for prayer, with reference to the Sandwich Mission, in the Brick Church in Hartford, October 11, 1819.

Hartford, Connecticut: Lincoln & Stone, 1819. Octavo booklet, 16 pp., with author's dedication to top margin of the title-page. An uncommon pamphlet related to early American missionary activity in Hawaii. It reprints a speech made at the marriage of pioneer Hawaiian missionary Reverend Hiram Bingham to Sybil Moseley. The ceremony was conducted just before the departure of the couple for the Hawaiian islands. The address was delivered by Thomas Gallaudet, principal of the American Asylum for Deaf and Dumb persons and sometime scholar of Hawaiian languages. This is an interesting association copy, being inscribed by the owner "For the Revd. Edwd. D. Griffin with the respects of the author" (The Reverend Edward Griffin was Presbyterian minister and advocate of South Sea missionary endeavour).         The Dead Asses. A Lyrical Ballad

London: Smith and Elder, 1819. 24 pp. 8vo. Extracted from bound volume. 24 pp. 8vo. Rare Wordsworth parody. One of four lengthy parodies of Wordsworth written in 1819. "[[M]uch more likely the work of John Hamilton Reynolds than 'Benjamin the Waggoner,' often attributed to Reynolds. Although 'The Dead Asses' captures something of the arrogant tone in many of Wordsworth's critical statements (in addition to mocking his hyper-sensitivity and self-absorption), Coleridge also is a target of the parodist. Both 'Christabel' and 'To a Young Ass' furnish evidence with which the parodist satirizes Coleridge's excessive sympathy with all living things. The parodist turns Coleridge into someone asinine but, in the concluding lines, Wordsworth becomes the ass itself" (Ken and Ewen, eds, Romantic Parodies, p 203). Rare: NUC lists three copies, at Yale, Cornell, and Indiana.

        The Humourist

London: Printed and Published by J. Robins & Co., 1819. With the Very Rare First Issue of Volume I [CRUIKSHANK, George, illustrator]. The Humourist: A Collection of Entertaining Tales, Anecdoes, Repartees, Witty Sayings, Epigrams, Bon Mots, Jeu d'esprits, &c. Carefully selected. London: Printed and Published by J. Robins & Co., [n.d., 1819 (Volume I); 1819 (Volumes II-III); 1820 (Volume IV)]. First edition, with the very rare first issue of Volume I (bound from the parts, with the printed title bearing "Vol. I" but no date, and p. 44 headed "Dr Johnson"). Four small octavo volumes (6 1/8 x 3 7/8 inches; 156 x 99 mm.). 226, [2]; 230, [2]; 222, [2]; 226, [2] pp. Forty hand-colored etched plates after Cruikshank, including four frontispieces and four vignette titles. Early twentieth-century full crushed rose morocco by Rivière & Son, covers with multi gilt borders and decorative corner pieces, spines lettered and decoratively tooled in gilt in compartments, gilt board edges and turn-ins, all edges rough gilt, dark blue coated endpapers. An excellent copy. With the engraved bookplate of The Library at Carolands on each pastedown. "It had long been held that the first volume only was issued in parts, in green paper printed wrappers, with either a type ornament border or the grotesque woodcut that is found on the boards of the volume, but recently a Part 13 of Vol. 2 came into the possession of Mr. F.J. Callcott who has kindly lent it to me for reproduction. It is therefore clear that the first two volumes were certainly first issued in parts and probably all four, and Douglas was incorrect in his assumption. A complete set of even the ten parts comprising the first volume is unknown in the original wrappers. The first issue should be therefore bound from the parts, is never genuinely found in the original boards, and should have the words "Vol. 1," on the printed title, but no date. The first issue of the volume in the printed boards has the date 1819 upon the printed title, but not the words "Vol. 1." The second issue has both the date 1819 and the words "Vol. 1" on the printed title. There are ten coloured etchings, including the engraved title, to each volume, all dated and with the imprint of J. Robins & Co., except the vignette titles, plate 7 of Vol. 2, and plate 4 of Vol. 3 which do not have the date, although with the imprint; this is a "point" of the first issue as in later issues, several plates are without imprint or date. Vol. 1 was reissued in 1822, so dated on the title, the dates running 1822, 1819, 1819, 1820. There are differences in the letterpress of this reissue. Notably at p. 44, where in the first issue the tale is "Dr. Johnson," while in the 1822 reissue it is "Epitaph on a Dyer." (Cohn). The Humourist "gave Cruikshank his first sustained opportunity to devise illustrations; Blanchard Jerrold calls it 'his first remarkable separate work.' Robins issued forty six-penny parts…with a colored etching in each, during 1819 and 1820…The vignette title page for volume 4 shows a grotesque dandy holding a cocked hat, grinning at the audience from a stage whose proscenium arch is decorated with swagged curtains and comic masks. The illustrations preserve that sense of theater: each scene takes place within a frame surmounted by emblematic props aspiring to a pedimental shape and supported by a base on which the title is inscribed, along with additional scenes and props" (Patten, George Cruikshank's Life, Times, and Art, I, p. 190). The first issue of Volume I is very rare; sets nearly always appear with it from the later re-issue (title-page dated "1822"). Cohn 419.
