Manuscript - Appraisment Documents of Robert Gordon, Governor of the Colony of Berbice - Elizabeth Ann Estate

Guyana, 1818. Demerara, 1818. "Statement of the affairs of the late Robert Gordon, dec'd to 1st January 1818." Manuscript appraisement of the immense Elizabeth Anne Plantation Estate in Essequibo, West Demerara, British Guiana, valuing the land, buildings, slaves, livestock, and livestock, belonging to Robert Gordon, Governor of the Colony of Berbice, as requested by his executors. An unusually detailed assessment featuring a "Crop Account" which records costs and profits associated with sugar and rum. With the signatures of three appraisers, and manuscript docketing to wrappers. Folio. 16 pages, on 6 double-leafs watermarked J Budgen 1815, string-tied in bright yellow wrappers. Leafs measure approximately 26 x 40 cm (10 x 16 inches). Wrappers age-toned and worn at spine, some small chips to margins, otherwise document is in very good, original condition, a significant and substantial document in a fine hand. Primary source manuscript material for British Guiana is scarce. The sugar plantation assessed herein was the estate of Robert Gordon Esq. from Aberdeen, who was twice Lieutenant-Governor of Berbice, British Guiana. The estate was named Elizabeth Anne and was located in Essequibo Islands, West Demerara, Guyana. An expansive estate surely requiring skilled and organized management to turn a profit, the Elizabeth Anne stretched over 526 acres, and was equipped with its own hospital, windmill, cast iron aqueducts and cistern for independent water supply and irrigation, a sugar mill, large sugar boiling house, rum storehouse, a schooner, and more. It required some 336 working hands, slaves, to operate. Apart from this highly detailed primary source document, one does not readily find much information pertaining to this important and sizeable estate, in spite of its connection to a British Guiana governor. [Several years later, in parliamentary papers, printed by Britain's House of Lords in 1841, Elizabeth Anne Estate is noted for receiving 37 Portuguese immigrants and the unnamed estate manager promising to supply beds, tables and benches.] In addition, the document refers to Quamina, a historically notable Guianese slave who is best remembered for his leading role in involved in the Demerara Rebellion of 1823, one of the largest slave revolts in the British colonies before slavery was abolished. A carpenter, Quamina lived and worked on owned by Sir John Gladstone's "Success" plantation in Demerara. He was very hard-working and respected, and under the tutelage of Reverend John Wray of Berbice, he learned to read and write. In 1817, he was one of five slaves elected deacon by the congregation. However, none of these would preclude him from receiving the abuse that slaves were subjected to. He too, was harshly treated and humiliated by his masters, once was beaten to incapacitation for a six-week period. (Reverend John Smith, wrote in his journal on 30 August 1817 that the slaves of "Success" complained about the work load and very severe treatment.) A single entry in the present document, noted due to its expense, suggests that in 1817 Quamina escaped the plantation and, at least for a time, was under the care of the more merciful Governor Gordon. Quamina is considered a national hero in Guyana. "Statement of the affairs of the late Robert Gordon, dec'd, to 1st January 1818." Following the death of former Governor of the British Colony of Berbice, Robert Gordon, Esq., the executors of his will of Thomas Frankland (formely Gordon's Government Secretary) and Alexander Fullerton (an attorney in Demerara and Essequibo), requested a complete appraisal of the estate and assets. All figures are calculated in Dutch guilders, although the final assessment is presented in two currencies, assigning to this estate and its assets, including the slaves, a total value of 78,065 British Pounds Sterling, or 936,780 Holland Guilders. Painstakingly thorough and detailed, penned in a meticulous hand, this document now forms a superlative primary source record of all aspects relating to the operations of a slave-driven, sugar and rum producing estate - a plantation of which there seems to be surprisingly little else for documentation considering its grandeur and its connection to a leading colonial administrator. "Plantation Elizabeth Anne - Inventory and Appraisement - Cultivation" is the heading on the first page, which proceeds to delineate the 526 acres of land into its various sections of use, then describe in excellent detail each of the buildings and other functional structures in use and dispersed across the vast territory. Some of these include the manager's luxurious dwelling complete with outside gallery, commune-style 'negro houses' measuring 300 to 500 feet long by 18 feet wide, a kitchen and washhouse building, a windmill repaired in 1816, road bridges, aqueducts, sugar processing buildings with equipment, and so forth. Again seldom seen on a list of plantation estate assets, Governor Gordon's estate included a schooner and a smaller boat. A lengthy register of slaves, neatly organized by assigned occupations, places a dollar value on 336 persons re-named and bound to servitude for an undetermined number of years. A simple and unsympathetic chart, only a first name and figure are noted. Each slave was given an English or Scottish name, some on this list even being placenames, London, New York, Newport, York, Barbados, Cuba, Pompey, for example. Other peculiar and derogatory given names arbitrarily donned upon them include Hood, Yankey, Duchess, Queen, Blue, Jupiter, and so forth. There are four (4) drivers (slave-drivers, not vehicle operators). A scant few other posts are listed including a distiller, boat captain and boatswain, painter, mason, engineer, cooper, boiler, carpenter, and washerwoman. There are 33 male watchmen stockkeepers active on duty. All others are assigned to general, arduous field work, save 6 individuals who are invalid. An unexpected annotation on the list of "Negros" reveals that one young male was slave sent to Aberdeen for education. Continuing with an in-depth 12-page financial evaluation, half is devoted to tallying monthly expenses made in the year 1817 by itemizing provisions such as food and spirits, tobacco, arms, lumber and shingles for repairs, "the King's taxes [George III]," fabric for making slaves' clothing, a hat, a journal for the sick house, a coffee pot, fishing line, a small fee for taking in a female runaway, salaries, medical expenses including an extended medical attendance for some of the slaves, annual salaries such as the manager's who earned 4,400 Dutch Guilders, and innumerable other costs. Two pages record costs and profits associated with the production and sales of sugar and rum in 1817, headed in upper margin "Crop Account." In the latter we find interesting Scots in colonial Demerara as purchasers, names such as James Fraser, Patrick McClure, Captain Simson, Alexander Shaw. Two pages list debts paid from the estate, those still owing, as well as receivables due. A separate chart is titled, "Gain by Exchange of Bills." More than just an expense register, many of the challenges of operating a fruitful plantation in British Guiana, as in the West Indies, come to light in these pages - scarcity of provisions, runaway slaves, continuous medical attention, feeding and clothing hundreds of captive labourers, and so forth. Finally, of personal note, a most interesting page shows monies paid by Governor Gordon for the care and education his children, he evidently having 5 daughters and one son. Titled, "An Account of the Expense attending the Board Maintenance & Education of the Natural Children of the late Robert Gordon deceased from January 1st 1817 to January 1st 1818," 2907 Dutch Guilders were expensed from the estate in one year. [The aforementioned Alexander Shaw was a resident of Demerara and one of the executors for the plantation called Providence. James Fraser younger, 8th of Belladrum (died in 1834), was owner and then co-owner of the cotton plantation known as Golden Fleece Estate in Berbice. In 1790 James Jr was in Tobago, having been to Demerara where he had purchased an estate. In 1794 Fraser owned a 500-acre cotton plantation on the west sea-coast of Berbice, which by 1798 was known as Dochfour. He also owned an 80-acre cotton plantation on the Mahaica. Fraser and two brothers were influential among Highland Scots in Demerara and Berbice, particularly the eldest, James, who co-ordinated the gathering of contributions for Inverness Infirmary in 1799.] Colonial statesman Robert Gordon, Esq. (1764-1814) served twice as Governor General of the Colony of Berbice, British Guiana, in South America, first from December 1810 to June 1812, and beginning a second term in February 1813 until he evidently took ill and was replaced by an acting Governor, surname Grant, who completed the term to June 1814. Before becoming a statesman, he was a Captain of the Royal Engineers. He arrived in British Guiana sometime between 1804 and 1808 during the second half of the Anglo-Spanish War. Participating in the defence of British possessions, he went out on a schooner with an American named Mr. Hubbard, to attack a Spanish privateer along the coast of Essequibo. [The event is described in a book by Gordon's friend, naturalist and explorer Charles Waterton who travelled to British Guiana in 1804 and managed his uncle's estates near Georgetown.] He is the first Gordon connected with Berbice, which during his tenure as Governor, was in effect a Dutch colony which had been captured by the British in 1796, but would not be officially ceded until 1814. His name appears in several parliamentary documents, and he is remembered for having reduced the commission percentage payable for the sale of an estate, and for improving conditions for the slaves. He died in British Guiana in 1814 at age fifty, leaving for his daughter Harriet Elizabeth Gordon (1807-1859), the Elizabeth Anne plantation, or a £20,000 mortgage on it. [Her son, Governor Gordon's grandfather, is the Australian poet Adam Lindsay Gordon, whom in turn inherited £7,000 from her in 1861.] Born at Hallhead in Aberdeenshire, he was the third son of Robert Gordon 3rd of Esslemont and 14th of Hallhead (who died in 1793) and Lady Henrietta Gordon, daughter of William, second Earl of Aberdeen. The Gordons of Hallhead remained at the Hallhead House until the 18th century, when Robert Gordon, 13th of Hallhead, became the 1st laird of Esselmont near Ellon. (He built the Esselmont House.) The family have remained at Esselmont to this day, although their name is now Wolrige-Gordon, due to the property having passed from Major Robert Gordon, 17th of Hallhead and 5th of Esselmont (who died 1828) to his daughter Ann, who married Henry Perkins Wolrige, who changed his name to Wolrige-Gordon. In addition to managing his own estate, Governor Gordon oversaw the operations of the Crown Estates. In a letter to the Earl of Liverpool 2 May 1811 Governor Gordon reported that the only source of revenue arising from the Colony of Berbice, for the Crown, was four plantations owned by the Dutch West India Company prior to British conquest. However, having witnessed deplorable conditions, such as, for example, slaves with no clothing for two years, and noticing a rapid rate of mortality among them from disease, abuse, so forth, he fought vehemently against the Commissioners for improved conditions for the slaves. In the same year he had the provisions-grounds re-planted to yield better crops for feeding the slaves, as they had been neglected by the Berbice Commissioners. British Guiana was the name of the British colony on the northern coast of South America, now the independent nation of Guyana. The area was originally settled by the Dutch as the colonies of Berbice, Demerara, and Essequibo, then captured by the British in 1796 and officially ceded in 1814, and consolidated into a single colony on 21 July 1831. The colony's capital was at Georgetown (known as Stabroek prior to 1812). As the British developed the colony for sugar cane plantations, they imported many Africans as slave labour. The economy of British Guiana was completely based on sugarcane production until the 1880s, when falling cane sugar prices stimulated a shift toward rice farming, mining and forestry. However, sugarcane remained a significant part of the economy. Georgetown was the site of a significant slave rebellion in 1823. In the 1880s gold and diamond deposits were discovered in British Guiana, but they did not produce significant revenue. British colonists built the first railway system in South America in British Guiana, 61 miles of standard gauge, from Georgetown to Rosignol, and 19 miles of 3'6" line between Vreeden Hoop and Parika; it opened in 1848. Several narrow-gauge lines were built to serve the sugar industry and others were built to serve the later mines. In 1823, only five years after this document was made, the slave population recorded in the United Colony of Demerara and Essequibo was 74,418, with slightly more female slaves than male. Berbice (Kolonie Berbice) was a Dutch colony from 1627 to 1815. Situated along the Berbice River in Guyana, it was settled in 1627 by Abraham van Peere, under the suzerainty of the Dutch West India Company. In 1720, the five owners of the colony founded a Society of Berbice to raise more capital for the colony. In 1732 the Berbice Association (Society of Bernbice), together with the Dutch West India Company established a charter with which to grant lands to private individuals. In 1733, a village which had sprung up near Fort Nassau was named New Amsterdam. Berbice's economic situation improved, and by 1735 it consisted of 12 plantations owned by the society, 93 private plantations along the Berbice River, and 20 plantations along the Canje River. In 1762 the population of the Berbice colony was recorded as 4,423 (346 whites, 244 Amerindians, 3,833 Africans), indicating a successful expansion, until suddenly a slave uprising broke out under the leadership of Cuffy in February 1763, and continued well into 1764, with Cuffy naming himself governor of Berbice. Only with the use of brute force was governor Wolfert Simon van Hoogenheim able to finally suppress the uprising, and restore the colony to Dutch rule. The Dutch colonies of Berbice, Demerara, and Essequibo, were captured by the British in 1796, officially ceded in 1814, and finally consolidated into the colony of British Guiana in 1831. Slavery had been abolished in Great Britain in 1834, on paper at least. Still today however Guatemala and Guyana are active centers in human trafficking.. Very Good.

- Isabey’s Grotesque and Indelicate Caricatures[ISABEY, Jean-Baptiste. Caricatures de J.J. Paris: Chez l’auteur et chez Alphonse Giroux, 1818.First edition. Title from front wrapper. Oblong folio (10 3/8 x 14 inches; 263 x 356 mm.). Twelve numbered hand-colored lithographed plates loose in wrappers as issued. Plates lithographed by C. Motte.Original pink lithographed wrappers (11 1/8 x 15 inches; 282 x 382 mm.). Minimal dust soiling to plate margins and wrappers. A very fine copy, housed in a fleece-lined quarter black morocco clamshell case."These twelve pseudonymous designs were the pastimes of Jean-Baptiste Isabey, a miniature painter of repute, who was the father of Eugène Isabey. Of great verve and spirit in themselves, their grotesque figures, tall or short, fat or thin, provide a link with English caricature of the previous quarter of a century, particularly the work of Thomas Rowlandson. Isabey’s situations are as gross and indelicate as his people. Indeed, ‘A game of whist’ (plate X) is among the least outré of his designs. This album foreshadows what was to be the prevailing style among caricaturists of manners in the early 1820s The series is far livelier than another set of lithographs by Isabey, to which he signed his name, the thirty plates of his Voyage en Italie of 1822" (Ray, The Art of the French Illustrated Book)."Cette suite de caricatures est intéressante pour les modes de l’epoque [This series of caricatures is interesting for the costumes of the time]" (Colas).Colas 1519.       Stockholm, 28. IV. 1818. - 2 SS. auf Doppelblatt. 4to. Mit eh. Adresse (Faltbrief).

Wiesbaden -19 1818 - (33 x 20 cm). 8 Bll., davon 10 S. beschrieben. Deutsche Kursiven in schwarzer Feder auf Schweizer Papier. Fadengeheftet.

Dumont, a Swiss writer and journalist, met Bentham at the house of Lord Shelburne in 1788. This meeting resulted in an enduring relationship. Devoted to Bentham's ideas, Dumont translated and edited many of his works and served as his informal literary agent. The first edition of The Theory of Legislation was published in Paris in 1802 as Traites de Legislation Civile et Penale. Our Italian edition came next, followed by an edition in Spanish in 1821-1822 and one in German, with an abridged text, in 1830. The first edition in English was published in Boston in 1840. The first British edition followed in 1864. Harrison, Bentham xvii. OCLC loctaes 2 copies of the first Italian edition in North America (at George Washington Law School and Yale).         [Ballet]. Il Conte d'Essex Appartamento d'una Regina. Etching and aquatint by Carlo Zucchi after Alessandro Sanquirico (1737-1777)

Il Conte d'Essex was first performed at La Scala in Milan in the autumn of 1818. The music for the ballet is ascribed to the Austrian writer and composer Peter Lichtenthal (1780-1853). "He was a close friend of Mozart's son Karl, and an ardent proponent of Mozart's chamber music. He composed about 50 works, including seven ballets for the Teatro alla Scala, church music, orchestral music (about 15 symphonies), chamber music, songs, piano and organ works. A number of these were published; most of his manuscripts are in the Milan Conservatory library." Alfred Loewenberg and Bruce Carr in Grove Music Online. "Gioia';s works show the cross-fertilization between opera and pantomime balletn dancer and choreographer. "... his prodigious output amounted to some 95 different ballets in more than 220 productions. Gioia';s works show the cross-fertilization between opera and pantomime ballet... Gioia';s ballets were important models for Italian operas of his and the following generation... The realistic acting technique of dancers in Gioia';s ballets influenced the expressive art of such outstanding young singers as Pasta and Malibran..." Kathleen Kuzmick Hansell in Grove Music Online.. 334 x 402 mm. A very good impression on wove paper. This scene from the ballet depicts a high vaulted Gothic room in which a seated woman and two men watch while a second women (?the queen) dances. Small tear to lower edge, not affecting image.

Roderick, the last of the Goths. Fifth edition.

Printed for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, London: 1818 - 2 This two-volume set is embellished with a set of fore-edge paintings, each inscribed by the artist with the title of the paintings, "Elstow Church, Buckingham" – known as Elstow Abbey (built in c.1075 AD). The second volume sports a view of "West Gate, Canterbury." The artist wrote the titles for both scenes on the (fore-edge) recto of the second-to-last leaf in each volume, in ink with capital letters. Painted in the 20th century. "Roderick the Last of the Goths is an 1814 epic poem composed by Robert Southey. The origins of the poem lie in Southey's wanting to write a poem describing Spain and the story of Rodrigo. Originally entitled "Pelayo, the Restorer of Spain," the poem was later retitled to reflect the change of emphasis within the story. It was completed after Southey witnessed Napoleon's actions in Europe, and Southey included his reactions against invading armies into the poem. The poem was successful, and multiple editions followed immediately after the first edition." "The story describes fighting over the inheritance of the Spanish throne and how Roderick manages to take over. After Roderick rapes Florinda, daughter of his important ally Count Julian, Julian and others change their allegiance and aid the invading Moorish army. During a battle against the Moors, Roderick is wounded and escapes to start a new life. Eventually, Roderick travels across Spain before determining that he must return to rescue Pelayo, an heir to the Spanish throne who was held prisoner by the Moors. After freeing Pelayo, he meets Florinda who reveals that her rape was not Roderick's fault. The group allies itself with Count Pedro, and they build an army to wage war against the Moors.
