- 4to. 30pp. With lithograph folding plan by C.T. Muller. Original blue stippled wrappers. The present botanic garden at Naples was founded in 1810 at the instigation of Joseph Bonaparte. Michele Tenore (1780-1861) was its first director, and remained in his post at the university for some 50 years (1809-60). Naples had had a uniquely interesting tradition of private Orti botanici even before Renaissance times (Tenore in this address refers to those of Giovanni Pinelli, Imperato and Bocconi among others); the first official botanic garden was established there in 1682. The plan of the present 1810 garden shows a systematic layout with sections arranged according to both Jussieu’s natural system, and that of Linnaeus; there is a flower garden, beds for oriental plants and a school of botany. The outer perimeter is laid out entirely after the English style, with provision for future plantings. A finely produced volume with wide margins. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author to Monsieur Mirbel. Occasional slight toning at outer edge, faint waterstain at lower margin, otherwise a very good copy on thick paper with wide margins. Pritzel 9146. See also Stafleu & Cowan vol VI, pp2l2-2l8 for Tenore’s important contributions to botany. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Historical Illustrations of the fourth canto of Childe Harold: containing dissertations on the ruins of Rome; and an essay on Italian literature. Second edition, revised and corrected.

London: John Murray, 1818. London:: John Murray, 1818.. 8vo. viii, 576 pp. Original full double gilt-ruled vellum, gilt embellished spine, olive-brown morocco spine label, all edges gilt, red endleaves. Fine copy. With a glorious fore-edge painting on the painted edge by the Dover painter, of Kings College Chapel Cambridge and labeled in the artists ink hand. The artist is known to have worked in the 1920s and 1930s in London, thus it is interesting to note that there are two notations with dates: a dated inscription in the back E.H.W. 25/3/31 [March 25, 1931] $85. with a cost code showing B/-/- over B/H/E. Surely an indication that this was painted by March 1931 and offered for sale by an American bookseller for $85. The label (shown) for the painting also has a code: 116/1/24 which looks like a date if so then the date would be in the year 1924. This is very much within this artists time period of activity.

The Revolt of Islam; a poem, in twelve cantos.

London: for C. and J. Ollier; by B. McMillan,, 1818. Octavo (225 × 137 mm). Original boards, title label to spine (priced 10s 6d), untrimmed. Housed in a blue cloth folding case. No half-title called for; with fly-title quoting Chapman, and errata leaf. Very discreet repair to joints, extremities rubbed, some light marks and spots, hinges superficially cracked but holding fine, title page a little toned otherwise remarkably fresh within, front free endpaper with tiny section of loss to top fore-corner and small closed tear repaired at outer margin. An excellent copy. First edition thus, in lovely condition uncut in the boards. The Revolt of Islam is the expurgated reissue of Laon & Cythna (1817) with a new title and 26 cancelled leaves. In 1817 the Olliers agreed to publish Shelley's long poem, Laon and Cythna. Shelley's new father in law, William Godwin, recommended a master printer for the job, Buchanan Millan, who made minor alterations to the text without consulting the poet. Shelley wrote to the Olliers complaining about these liberties, whereupon the Olliers read the work for the first time and realised what they had agreed to publish. In the original version the titular lovers were brother and sister. London was alive with gossip about Shelley living with both Mary Godwin and her half-sister Claire Clairmont, and in contemporary usage, such a ménage was termed incest (St. Clair, The Godwins and the Shelleys, p. 432.) Shelley was forced to make alterations, removing any hint of incest, and gave it the new title The Revolt of Islam. The book is made up from original sheets of Laon and Cythna, with 26 cancelled leaves and a new title leaf. A few copies were issued with the title misdated 1817; this is the second issue as usual, with the correct date. Copies in boards are scarce (due in part to the predilection of late 19th-century collectors for lavish rebindings), and this is a lovely example, with the bookplates of two notable bibliophiles, Charles Fairfax Murray (1849-1919 - he was also a pre-Raphaelite painter), and Willis Vickery (1857-1932, an American Judge).

The Laws of the Island of Antigua.vol. I[-III]

London 1818 - [8], lxvii, 584; [4], xx, 636; [4], xxvii, 467pp. Library ink stamps and contemporary ownership inscription on titlepages. Light dampstaining, particularly to first leaves of second volume. Tape repair to p.301 in first volume. Twentieth century buckram, leather labels The laws of the island of Antigua from 1668 through 1817, also including the laws of the Leeward Islands from 1690 to 1798. Antigua, colonized by the British in the mid-17th century, served as a major sugar producer and hub for shipping in the West Indies. The laws include those governing titles to lands, numerous regulations on slaves, and duties on sugar and molasses produced on the island. The American Revolutionary War caused a significant disruption in the sugar trade, and British sentiment against slavery further served to shift the economy of the island in the late-18th century. These laws were originally issued as a two volume set in 1805, though the third volume followed in 1818 and is noted as Volume III on the titlepage, covering the period 1805-18. An important set of laws governing a major British sugar colony in the West Indies. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Paris, Mme hérisant Le Doux, 1818-1819. Folio (36.5 x 27.0 cm). 82 (of 109) Colour-printed plates, finished by hand and 172 (of 280) pages with plate descriptions. Original printed wrappers.= The most beautifully illustrated work on citrus fruits ever, written by the French pharmacist, botanist, malacologist and geologist Joseph Antoine Risso (1777-1845) in cooperation with the French illustrator Pierre Antoine Poiteau (1766-1854). "It contains exquisite drawings of every variety of orange, lemon and grapefruit, and their congeners... A beautiful and inspiring work" (Sitwell). Complete copies are rare, coloured copies, such as in this set, utterly rare and expensive. This is a very large part in original wrappers. Present are the livraisons 1-12 (pp. 1-104, 109-172; plates 1-72). Lacking are the livraisons 13-19, and two text sheets (pp. 105-108). The livraisons are numbered by hand, and this appears to be partly faulty. The contents differ widely from the listing - "by inference" - in Stafleu & Cowan. The original wrappers are usually discarded in bound copies and now very rare. Plate 15 number corrected in pencil. Wrappers chipped and frayed at edges and at spine fold, a few split along the fold, or with larger tears. All unmarked. The text and plates with minimal fraying at the outer edges, a few plates somewhat toned, one text section and a few plates with a weak, circular dampstain in the outer margin, otherwise very good, clean.         Tableau encyclopédique et methodique des trois regnes de la nature. Insectes.

Paris, Agasse, 1818. Folio (28.5 x 21.4 cm). 165 engraved plates (numbered 1-165). Contemporary full tree calf. Boards with gilt-ruled borders, spine with rich Louis XVI-style gilt-ornamented red and green morocco labels. Marbled endpapers.= This is the "insectes" atlas of the "Tableau encyclopédique et methodique des trois regnes de la nature", a subdivision of the famous Encyclopédie méthodique: "Although its several volumes can be considered a part of the greater Encyclopédie méthodique, they were titled and issued separately" (Wikipedia). The great French zoologist and entomologist Pierre André Latreille (1762-1833) wrote the insect part. It was published as "Crustacés, arachnides et insectes", but this is the plate section on true insects only; thus without crustaceans and spiders. Latreille and Olivier wrote more parts of the Encyclopédie méthodique on the insects; the total entomological section of the Encyclopédie consists of no less than five large text volumes and nearly 400 plates. Published over a long period, complete sets are very rare and even individual parts such as this one are hard to get. The finely engraved plates, numbered 1-165, show mainly butterflies (plates 2-93) and beetles (plates 135-165), but also Odonata, Orthoptera, Hymenoptera, etc., etc. Provenance: The Cyrillic armorial bookplate with Latin motto "Deus conservat omnia" of Count Sergiy Dmitrievich Sheremetev (1844-1918), author of a series of works on the history of Russia in the 16th and 17th centuries. The second, matching bookplate is a label from the library named after Nicolai Petrovich, Count Sheremetev (1751-1809). Spine rebacked, without title; otherwise a very good, clean copy. The artist is known to have worked in the 1920s and 1930s in London, thus it is interesting to note that there is a dated inscription in the back E.H.W. 25/3/31 [March 25, 1931] $85. – with a cost code showing B/-/- over B/H/E.         Historical Illustrations of the Fourth Canto of Childe Harold: containing dissertations on the ruins of Rome; and an essay on Italian Literature. Second edition, revised and corrected.

John Murray, 1818., London: - 8vo. viii, 576 pp. "3 plates" Original green straight grain morocco, gilt rules, gilt-stamped raised bands, rouge endleaves. Bookplates of John Bolton and Marjorie & Martin Mitau. Very good. With a fore-edge painting under the gold entitled: "Fore Edge, Castle & Bridge of St. Angelo, Tomb of Hadrian." The old Castle at St. Angelo is referenced on p.300: "This imitation of Egyptian deformity must not be supposed to apply to the mausoleum of Hadrian, but to the monstrous divinities, and the fabrics of the Tiburtine villa. The Mole was constructed, it is thought, on the plan, nearly, of the Mausoleum of Augustus or Cecilia Metella." [Aikin]. A classic scene often depicted on fore-edge paintings. Provenance: Martin Mitau (1900–1973) and Marjorie (née Fleishhacker) Mitau (1906–1983) were both San Franciscans and lived in the Bay Area all their lives. He was a member of Roxburghe Club of San Francisco and the Book Club of California, and their collection was strong in California fine printing. – Kelmscott Chaucer census. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Original pen and ink sketch, captioned "L'Intérieur d'un ménage, à Coupang" and dated at the top "Timor 1818"

during the expedition of the Uranie, Timor 1818 - Fine pen and ink sketch, the image 198 x 265 mm., on laid paper; pencil note "Mr. Arago" in Freycinet's later hand at bottom left; framed. Fine sketch of a scene in Timor, drawn by Jacques Arago during the visit of the Freycinet expedition in late 1818. Arago's observations on Timor were acute, and he is known to have toured and made sketches in both the wealthy Chinese and Malay quarters (commenting that the latter "consists of hovels"). A series of his Timor scenes were later included in the official Freycinet voyage account, but this scene was not made into an engraving and is in fact otherwise unrecorded.Jacques Etienne Arago (1790-1855) was the official artist on Freycinet's voyage, and is known for the witty and caustic account he later wrote as much as for his fine sketches. Arago was the third of four brothers who excelled in diverse professions, the most notable being his eldest brother François, a scientist and politician. Arago's undoubted artistic ability attracted the attention of the naval authorities who chose him for the demanding role of draughtsman for the Freycinet expedition. By all accounts a charming, gregarious and eccentric man, these attributes stood him in good stead during the voyage, and are reflected in the sketches he made.As with many other Arago drawings relating to the voyage, this was evidently given to Freycinet, as it is his handwriting that signs the picture "Mr. Arago" at bottom left. Freycinet is known to have retained a large number of voyage images by both Arago and his colleague Pellion, which would have been surrendered to him as both commander and official chronicler of the voyage. It is interesting to note that Arago's famous scene of Rose going ashore at Timor, sold by us in our Baudin & Flinders catalogue (2010, no. 69), has almost identical borders and annotations, as did his sketch of a man of Timor (no. 81). Provenance: Originally owned by Louis de Freycinet, commander of the Uranie. Well preserved in an attractive frame.

ARGUMENT IN THE DARTMOUTH COLLEGE CASE, BEFORE THE SUPREME COURT OF THE UNITED STATES ON MARCH 10, 1818] "THE GENERAL QUESTION IS, WHETHER THE ACTS OF THE 27TH OF JUNE, AND OF THE 18TH AND 26TH OF DECEMBER, 1816, ARE VALID AND BINDING ON THE RIGHTS OF THE PLAINTIFFS, WITHOUT THEIR ACCEPTANCE OR ASSENT."

[np: 1818 - 43, [1 blank] pp. Stitched. Lightly dusted and spotted, Very Good. Housed in a folding cloth box with printed paper label. This scarce printing of Daniel Webster's argument, in one of America's most significant and influential constitutional cases, was issued without imprint. Conflict between President Wheelock and its Federalist Trustees had torn Dartmouth College apart. The Trustees removed Wheelock and appointed a replacement. "Inevitably the issue between the president and the trustees entered into the state's fiercely partisan politics" [Peterson, The Great Triumvirate 88-92]. Thus in 1816 New Hampshire's Republican legislature, which viewed the college as "the citadel of a haughty aristocracy," abolished Dartmouth's 1769 Charter and turned it into a State University. Litigation resulted: the New Hampshire Superior Court ruled against Dartmouth, and Dartmouth appealed to the Supreme Court. Webster's argument demonstrated that the State's revocation of Dartmouth's Charter unconstitutionally impaired the obligations of Dartmouth's contract. The case "established Webster's eminence before the court" [Id.] Webster asserted that the case "affects not this college only, but every college, and all the literary institutions of this country. They have flourished, hitherto, and have become in a high degree respectable and useful to the community. They have all a common principle of existence, the inviolability of their charters. It will be a dangerous, a most dangerous experiment, to hold these institutions subject to the rise and fall of popular parties, and the fluctuations of political opinions."II Harv. Law Rev. 1058.
