Falconer, Edinburgh, 1825.Wells's "Two essays" contains important contributions in the fields of ophthalmology, meteorology, ventilation, and evolution. "In his "Essay upon single vision with two eyes", originally published in 1792, Wells presents a new theory of binocular vision based on the concept of visible direction and experimental evidence on the duration of impressions on the retina. Wells's theory of visible direction had a great influence on the science of spectacle making in the early part of the nineteenth century". (Becker) The other contributions found here are also significant. The "Essay on dew", first published in 1814, was of "major importance in the development of the science of ventilation, particularly in its relation to relative humidity and the influence of the latter on the comfort of the occupants of factories, ships, theatres, etc". (Garrison-Morton 1604). His paper on a woman with patchy skin, on the other hand, is: "The first statement of the theory of natural selection...an almost complete anticipation of Darwin's theory...although it was completely ignored until it was resurrected by a correspondent of Darwin in the 1860s".         Ezrat HaSofer; Hamisha Humshey Torah; Tikun Sofrim, Vavei Ha'amudim. [Pentateuch with Or Torah glosses].

Vienna Georg Holzinger 1818 - Five volumes, octavo (19 x 12.5 cm). Vol I - title, [18 ll.], 79 ll.; Vol II - title, [1 l.], 86 ll.; Vol. III - title, 67 ll.; Vol. IV - title, 75 ll.; title, 70 ll. Text in Hebrew, with Ladino preface by Yisrael Haim. Contemporary brown calf with gilt floral and pomegranate patterns in oriental style and the name "Chaim" embossed on front cover of volumes III and V., signature "Chaim" to some of the title pages. Overall good condition, some stains and wear. Preserved in a modern slipcase. Sephardic pentateuch published in Vienna by Yisrael Haim of Belgrade - the pioneer of Ladino printing in Vienna and "champion of the Ladino translation tradition in the 19th century". (David M. Bunis, Histoire, Epistomologie, Langage) Yisrael Haim was born in the second half of the 18th century in Belgrade; following the invasion of the Dahijas in 1813 Haim was forced to flee Serbia and later settled in Vienna. Here he published most of his works and dedicated his whole life to his literary efforts and to serving the community. Through the first few decades of the 1800s Haim published many sacred Hebrew books such as prayer-books, pentateuchs, moralistic works and others. His translations were intended not just for the Sephardic community in Vienna, but for Ladino speakers worldwide - to the descendants of medieval Spanish Jewry. Living side by side with the Ashkenazic community in Vienna and inspired by presses that published Yiddish works Haim began to publish Ladino reeditions and new translations of Medieval Sephardic Hebrew classics. One of Haim's main concerns was the lack of knowledge of Hebrew among the Jewish youth. Inspired by prenumerantem system employed among the Ashkenazic community Haim offered wealthy members of his community the opportunity to sponsor his publication in return for their name to be recorded in the work, as can be seen in this publication's title page: "Brought to Print by dear honourable lord Eliezer Ben Menachem HaCohen". Contemporary half-roan, worn, with publisher's printed red label mounted on upper board. A fine and complete example of the scripture atlas published by Leigh, containing 20 engraved maps and plans with original wash and outline colour. The maps include: separate maps for the lands of each of the 12 tribes of Israel; general map Palestine and the tribes; plan of the Second Jewish Temple of Jerusalem built by Herod; plan of the City of Jerusalem; map of the "Journeyings of the Israelites" marking their route from Egypt, through the desert, to the Holy Land; map of Asia Minor, Palestine and Greece; map of "Places mentioned in the Old and New Testament, with those remote from the Holy Land"; and map of the travels of St. Paul. Samuel Leigh was a well known bookseller and publisher based in the Strand, London. He was active in the first half of the 19th century and published series of travel books in the 1820s and 1830s. His most famous book 'New Picture of London: or, a View of the Political, Religious, Medical, Literary, Municipal, Commercial, and Moral State of the British Metropolis' was published in many editions. His son was the painter James Mathews Leith. Three of the large folding maps in the atlas were drawn by James Wyld senior – a famous map seller, cartographer, engraver, surveyor and Geographer to the King and to the Duke of York. Most of the remaining maps in the atlas were engraved by Nathaniel Rogers Hewitt – a well know engraver, printer and map colourist, also known to produce the maps and title page of James Wyld's 'General Atlas' of 1819. Little is known about J.T. Assheton - the author of the majority of the maps in the atlas. He is said to be a "Slightly obscure figure, who contributed maps, many relating to Bible history, to several publications between 1812 and 1832" (Laurence Worms).

NARRATIVE OF MY CAPTIVITY IN JAPAN, DURING THE YEARS 1811, 1812 & 1813: WITH OBS

      - London 1818, Colburn. FIRST EDITION. Full diced leather, 2 vol. set 302+348p., very good, gold stamped, spines & edges mildly rubbed, hinges reinforced with thin strips of leather a bright looking copy, contents clean, on bright white paper. SUBTITLE: continued: ". of the Author & his Companions, by Captain Rikord. *** WHO WAS CAPT. VASILY GOLOWNIN: Vasily Mikhailovich Golovnin, Russian [19 April [O.S. 8 April 1776], Gulyniki, Ryazan Oblast, Russia 11 July [O.S. 29 June] 1831, Saint Petersburg, Russia, was a Russian navigator, Vice Admiral, and Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Science *** An excellent and most early reliable resource for first contacts between the Japanese & Russians. * Captain Vasili Golowinin was captured and held by the Japanese for some three years, where he learned much about Japan and Japanese. Golownin was withdrawn from the British fleet by the Tsar to do a survey of the Sea of Okhotsk, the Southern Kuriles & the Japan Sea. . Despite his peaceful signals, the Japanese cannon blazed away at him, eventually he & his crew of the "Diana" were taken prisoners. . This is the famous & historic true account of what Golownin saw, where he went and what he did during his three year sojourn in Japan. . An early & most excellent primary resource. *** Golovnin was given command of the sloop Diana in 1806, and made his first voyage around the world (1807-1809), with the object of conducting a survey of the northern Pacific, and transporting supplies to Okhotsk. . The Diana set sail from Kronstadt on July 7, 1807. A severe storm in April 1808 prevented the Diana from sailing around Cape Horn, and Golovnin decided to set sail for the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa, to restock the ship's supplies. He anchored in the nearby port of Simon's Town on May 3, 1808. Golovnin, having been at sea for ten months, was unaware that Russian relations with Britain had deteriorated, and Russia had allied herself with the French. The Diana was immediately detained as an enemy vessel by a British naval squadron, pending receipt of appropriate instructions from London. . Golovnin and his crew spent more than a year detained aboard the Diana at Simon's Town awaiting a decision from British authorities. When it became increasingly clear that a decision might never come, Golovnin began to plot their escape. On May 28, 1809, perfect conditions presented themselves -a fair wind and poor visibility. The crew severed the anchor cables, and managed successfully to sail out of the bay, passing directly in front of several British warships. Once the British discovered that they had escaped, they set off in pursuit, but failed to overtake the Diana, which sailed safely at Kamchatka in 1810.[5] News of the Diana's "audacious escape" quickly spread throughout the world. Extracted from Wikipedia. *** CAPTIVITY IN JAPAN: In 1811, Golovnin described and mapped the Kuril Islands from the Strait of Hope to the eastern shores of Iturup Island (Etorofu in Japanese). . While exploring Kunashir Island (Kunashiri in Japanese), Golovnin was lured ashore, taken prisoner, charged with violating Sakoku (a Japanese policy prohibiting foreigners from entering Japan), and held captive for two years by the Japanese on the island of Hokkaido. Golovnin was said to possess a "superior education and fascination with foreign cultures." After making one failed attempt to escape his captures, Golovnin decided to utilize his time in detainment to master the Japanese language, and familiarize himself with Japanese culture and traditions. . Golovnin was released in 1813, returned to Russia, and published an account of his years in captivity.[12] His book, Captivity in Japan During the Years 1811, 1812, 1813, became an instant classic. It was hailed in Russia as an authoritative volume on Japanese culture, and helped shape an entire generation's view of Japan. Golovnin clearly respected the Japanese, portraying them "as intelligent, as patriotic, and as worthy r

Al gioco cinese chiamato il rompicapo. Appendice di figure reappresentanti l'alfaeto, le nove cifre dei numeri arabie, domini, bestie, case case, cocchi, barche, urne, vasi, ed altri suppellettili domestichi. . .

Milan: Pietro e Giuseppe Vallardi, 1818. FIRST EDITION. With 133 hand-colored figures on 12 engraved plates. Contemporary wrappers with the original printed wrappers pasted onto both covers (title, etc., on front and publisher's advertisements on back). First edition of an ancient work; the invention of this puzzle is unrecorded in history. Literally translated as "seven boards of skill," the tangram is a dissection puzzle with seven pieces (five different sized triangles, a square and a rhomboid) in which players recombine the pieces to form various shapes such as animals, letters, numbers, and other objects. Little is known about the origin of the tangram, inasmuch as the earliest known book was only published the prior year in Europe. The tangram was said to be invented in China over one thousand years ago, then carried to the west by nineteenth-century traders. Archimedes apparently designed a tangram-like puzzle called Loculus Archimedes in the third century BC. Early Chinese mathematicians manipulated geometric shapes in their problem solving. The game helped train memory and logic. It boosts shape recognition, problem solving, and pattern design skills. It is noted that the Pythagorean theorem was discovered in the Orient with help of tangram pieces. It is a new take on the classic memory game with proven results. The tangram has also been referred to as the earliest psychological test in the world. Giraud (1776-1834), a member of a banking dynasty in Rome of French origin, was a comedian and author of comic operas and plays. He became director-general of Italian theaters in 1809.
