1818. Arranged alphabetically according to names. Nonresident Voters for the Borough and Hundred of Aylesbury. [title thus - with calligraphic flourishes - on upper cover].>

8vo., (19 x 12 cms.), manuscript in ink on paper, approximately 140 written up pages (excluding blanks), all ruled in red, ledger style, with numerous original alterations and deletions, original parchment covered boards, covers a bit soiled else in very good state of preservation (now kept in a fitted cloth box, spine lettered). The general Parliamentary election of 1818 for the Aylesbury constituency was contested between George Grenville (Baron Nugent), William Rickford and Charles Compton Cavendish, the Cavendish party losing heavily. The enfranchised voters totalled about 1000, comprising, in 1818, both inhabitant householders and 40s. freeholders. The present list of non-resident voters throws some light on the diaspora of many of the voters whose places of residence covered not only almost all the Home Counties but also places much further afield. [For a scholarly commentary on the election itself, see Thorne, H. of C. 1790-1820, II,> pp.21-22].

'... a joy forever' : First Edition of Keats' Endymion Attractive copy of Keats' second book, his immortal poem whose first line is "A thing of beauty is a joy forever ..." So savage and malevolent were the reviews of this poem by Blackwoods and the Quarterly ("Lockhart found it exquisitely funny that an apothecary, a fellow who confessedly knew no Greek, who had to read Homer in a translation, should venture on a classic theme" - MacGillivray), that Keats' supporters thereafter blamed the reviewers for Keats' early death.         Hyakuba no zu [The Hundred Horses].

[Japan, Bunsei era, 1818-30].. Manuscript (brush and wash), 2 vols., 194 × 105 mm, concertina-folded, with 61 drawings of horses (each double page, i.e. c. 210 × 195 mm), captioned. Original blue paper covered boards, labels to upper covers titled in manuscript. Traces of a numerous very neat paper repairs (usually correcting minute wormholes, as typical of Japanese books of this date, not affecting images), former (Japanese) owner's stamps to cover labels and first illustration in each volume. Preserved in a later blue silk covered folding case (wanting one bone closure).. An elegant and delightful series of manuscript portraits of horses by an unidentified Japanese hand. 'The Hundred Horses' was a popular subject in Japanese art and is represented both in panel pictures, scrolls and books. The title is representative rather than prescriptive and does not denote one hundred in number, but simply 'many'. While the horse was an ancient component of Japanese art, the subject of the Hundred Horses was probably introduced into Japan under Chinese influence by the beginning of the Edo period (1603), with associations of courtly culture based on the noble and military connotations of the horse. The concern here is for careful typology of the different breeds, with characteristics of physique and markings neatly depicted and explained in the captions ('chestnut', 'spotted' etc), but the various postures and attitudes are arresting. An example of a manuscript book of similar period, slightly more elaborate, is preserved in Waseda University Library:http://www.wul.waseda.ac.jp/kotenseki/html/chi04/chi04_01285/index.html.

Accounts of the Whale Ship Rajah, 1841 - 1857

Folio, about 75 pages of manuscript entries. The "Rajah" was a 250 ton bark built in Newburyport in 1818. In 1844, according to a note at the front of this book, she was "bought in New Bedford at auction 7mo. 19th 1844 at the rate of 10000 interest to 4 mo 1st 1845... 8 months 12 days 420/ $10420..." by the Quaker owner Henry Wilcox. This book documents in great detail the expenses and returns of the "Rajah's" first three voyages under Wilcox's ownership. According to Starbuck, she was sold after her third Wilcox voyage, in 1856, and ultimately sank in the Sea of Okhotsk in 1858. At the back of the book are records of settlements with co owners Oliver Brown, Thomas Bennett, Henry West, Job Davis, and William Wrightington. Clean and legible. Bound in diced calf over marbled boards. A splendid record.

The Fall of New Granada: the report between the last Viceroys of New Granada regarding the state of the Viceroyalty, 18 months prior to the arrival of Simon Bolivar?s Army in Santa Fe de Bogota. 1818. Cartagena. In 4to (260 mm x 219 mm). 126 ff. + 5 ff. [Index] & 7 folding tables. Contemporary green polished calf, spine flat, tooled in gilt, morocco lettering piece, boards with gilt fillets, back cover with minor loss, overall fine. Internally a fresh and well-preserved manuscript, with only a few scattered foxing spots. This document, drafted by the outgoing Viceroy of New Granada, Francisco José Montalvo (1754-1822), and given to his successor Juan José Francisco de Sámano at the time of this final transition of Spanish control, is without question one of the most significant historical documents for the history of the fall of the Viceroyalty of New Granada and the creation of the modern Republic of Colombia in August 1819. It provides a unique contemporary insight and factual account of the state of affairs in the Viceroyalty on the eve of its conquest by the revolutionary forces led by Simon Bolivar and Francisco de Santander. Against this backdrop, Montalvo attempts to provide his successor, Sámano y Uribarri, with a meaningful overview of the state of affairs in New Granada and Cartagena. It is a fundamental source for the history of the transitional final viceroyalties of New Granada, and an exceptional manuscript meant only for the eyes of the highest-ranking official in the Spanish Colonial Administration of Nueva Granada. The contents are varied and encompass a thorough reconnaissance of the region. The first part is a historical description of the condition the territory was passed on to Montalvo in 1813: the deplorable state of Costa Firme, his orders to move to Santa Marta, the help he was granted, notes on the Spanish ships at Portobello, the political and military situation at Santa Marta with its defenses, the insurgents attacks and victories gained; passing on to 1814 the author keeps focus on the troubling rebellion, this part includes the defeat of the revolutionaries and their retreat to Cartagena, the attack on Portobello, spies, preparations for defense, details of economic nature such as the value of the macuquina silver coin, extensive details on the fleet, rebel?s incursions, state of the post office, defeats suffered by the revolutionaries and their persistence, Simon Bolivar?s refuge in Cartagena, the revolution in Cuzco ?"the political instability was widespread- and the taking of Montevideo. The report continues with the military state in Cartagena, Hacha, Santa Marta, Popayan, Quito and Venezuela; it is rich in information regarding the armed forces, artillery, army, military hospitals, food, salaries, etc. A third part deals with the Government, the authority of the colonial administration, public affairs, education, means to develop schools, what should be taught, population, public health. It finishes with the financial and tax reality of the Viceroyalty. The small opinion the Viceroy expressed towards the revolutionaries is expressed throughoutthe document "Es de presumir que los insurgentes no tuvieron otro objeto en la expedicion de Portobelo que robar" [It is presumable that the insurgents had no other aim in the expedition against Portobello than stealing].The present manuscript is known in only a singleother example, signed by Montalvo, which resides in the Real Academia Española. Montalvo also signs this second example, which is in an identical binding as the copy held at the Real Academia, suggesting that the present example is either the copy given to Sámano or a copy retained by Montalvo. The folding tables are: 1. Autographed Letter Signed as Congressman

Washington, D.C. 1818 - Federalist Congressman from Massachusetts who served in the United States House of Representatives from 1817 - 1819. He became an overseer of Bowdoin College as well as a trustee and later treasurer. 3 pages (front and back) with each two-page spread measuring 9.75 x 15.75 inches, Washington, D.C., March 14, 1818. Written to his friend at Bowdoin College, Prof. Parker Cleaveland, American geologist, called "The Father of American Mineralogy," pertaining to the marble columns that supported the Capital building prior to the British burning of Washington, D.C. in 1814, in part: ".You seem to suppose that I might have given you some amount of the marble column of the Capital, and I should have done it, had it not been my intention to carry with me a small specimen of that very curious and beautiful item. I have seen collections of small stones in great numbers, which, if cemented, would resemble some, these fine pillars. They are 2 feet and 8" in diameter and 22 feet in height. In general, the cement is very firm, though in some instance, remnants of pebbles have given way to the hand of the workman. We had some amusement yesterday in the H.of R. from sharp shouting between Clay and Nelson. The Presidents opinion of the unconstitutionality of making roads and canals under the law of the U.S. was under discussion. Nelson supports the Executive Opinion, Clay contested the correctness & propriety of it." Note: according to the papers of architect Benjamin Latrobe, the marble columns of the connecting corridors were moved and subsequently reused during the rebuilding of the Capital (1815 - 1819). However, there are several documented instances of marble disappearing through the wanton pilfering by thieves and the indiscretions of local souvenir hunters. Did any of the marble end up at Bowdoin College? This letter grades very good condition with light show-through -- though easily read. The Integral address leaf has a gorgeous Free Frank of Benjamin Orr as Congressman and a docket in the hand of Professor Parker Cleaveland. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
