On y lit cependant : p. 53, "M. 1 vol. 8vo. Contemporary half sheep. 1 hand-colored frontispiece-portrait, 1 plan. Second edition of this account of the Meduse’s shipwreck. Scarce copy with important manuscript annotations contemporary made, presumably by the hand of one of the survivor as they are written at the first person, giving more details about the story. An amazing copy of the most famous publication about a shipwreck. Polak, 8679.

1818 - Appealing Early Edition of The Federalist Hamilton, Alexander [1755-1804]. James Madison [1751-1836]. John Jay [1745-1829]. The Federalist, On the New Constitution; Written in 1788. A New Edition, With the Names and Portraits of the Several Writers. Philadelphia: Published by Benjamin Warner, 1818. vi, [7]-504 pp. Lithographed portrait frontispiece of Hamilton, two other plates with portraits of Madison and Jay, both with tissue overlays. Octavo (8-1/2" x 5-1/2"). Recent period-style calf, blind rules to boards, lettering piece and gilt fillets to spine. Moderate toning, occasional light foxing, faint dampstaining to some leaves, chip to margin of a leaf with no loss to text. Early markings to margins of a few leaves, interior otherwise clean. Ex-library. Small inkstamps to verso of title page and foot of final page. A nice copy in an attractive binding. * Second single-volume edition, a reissue of the first with plates. With the text of the Articles of Confederation and the U.S. Constitution. Of the eighty-five essays, John Jay wrote numbers 1-5 and 54, Madison wrote numbers 10, 14, and 37-48. Numbers 18-20 were written by all three. The remaining 50 were written by Hamilton. (The author's name is listed at the end of each essay in this edition.) The essays aimed to encourage ratification of the proposed constitution by New York State, but were immediately recognized as the most compelling commentary on the most radical form of government the world had yet seen. Most of these essays appeared under the collective pseudonym "Publius" in New York newspapers and journals from October 27, 1787 to early June 1788. The M'Lean brothers published the first edition of The Federalist (along with the text of the Constitution) in 1788 as a two-volume set. The present edition follows the text of the 1802 Hopkins edition, which was the first to include corrections by Jay and Hamilton. Cohen, Bibliography of Early American Law 2818.         Don Giovanni. Vocal score. German & Italian. [Don Juan : Oper in zwey Aufzügen von W.A. Mozart. Nebst einem Anhang von später eingelegten Stücken. Klavierauszug von A.E. Müller.]

Leipzig: Breitkopf & Härtel, 1818. Hardcover. Very Good. Oblong folio (330 x 240mm). 184 pages. Complete vocal score. Notated music. Added engraved title page: Il dissoluto punito; osia, Il Don Giovanni. Müller with vignette of Don Giovanni scene by Fr. Bolt after Kininger, Pr. 4 Rthlr. Italian-German text. Richly bound in crushed green morocco handsomely gilt with device of lyre and central lozenge on front and rear covers, spine done in the same and lettered in gilt ?"Don Juan ?- Mozart,?" speckled edges; (toned and only lightly foxed, few pages margins lightly torn or with paper repairs, not frequent, good with all with engraved music otherwise). 1818 Leipzig printing for the vocal score of Mozart?'s famous opera ?'Don Giovanni?'. Italian librettos were translated into German owing to the growing popularity of opera in Germany during the last decade of the 18th century; contemporary to Mozart?'s death in 1791. Mozart immediately accepted at least the title under which on of his works would become known in the German-speaking countries: writing home on 3 October 1790, he reported, ?"on Tuesday the theatrical company of the elector of Mainz are performing my Don Juan.?" German communities variously received Mozart?'s operas; the battle between the aristocratic and bourgeois audiences raged to and fro. When Don Juan played for the first time in the Frankfurt theater it was deemed suitable ?"for the general public?" but not for its ?"educated section.?" Yet the critics could all concede of Mozart?'s popularity and that the subject matter turned the heads of the public. This fine, well-preserved dual text is an early and complete keyboard transcription of the opera. It gives Lorenzo da Ponte's original Italian, with the German translation by Schröder underneath. Excellent piece of music history and staple of the standard operatic repertoire.

        Eigenh. Brief mit U. ("Fouque").

Nennhausen bei Rathenow, 24. VI. 1818.. 2 SS. auf Doppelblatt. 4to..

STATEMENT RESPECTING THE EARL OF SELKIRK'S SETTLEMENT UPON THE RED RIVER IN NORTH AMERICA; ITS DESTRUCTION IN 1815 AND 1816; AND THE MASSACRE OF GOVERNOR SEMPLE AND HIS PARTY. WITH OBSERVATIONS UPON A RECENT PUBLICATION, ENTITLED, "A NARRATIVE OF OCCURRENCES IN THE INDIAN COUNTRIES," &c

New York: Published by James Eastburn & Co., 1818.. viii,194,[2],c pp. plus folding map. Half title. Later three-quarter morocco and marbled boards, spine gilt. Light shelf wear. Bookplates to front pastedown. Map backed with paper. Scattered light foxing, a bit of light staining to the appendix leaves. Very good. The Henry DePuy-Frank Deering copy, with their bookplates on the front pastedown. The Selkirk community was of particular interest to the former; most everything Americana-related was of interest to the latter. The first American edition, following the London edition (in two issues) printed the year before. Describes the history of Selkirk's settlement on the Red River and its differences with the North West Company. Halkett herein defends Lord Selkirk's Red River settlement against the aggressions of the North West Company. This edition contains added material answering to a work published under the North West Company's auspices, A NARRATIVE OF OCCURRENCES IN THE INDIAN COUNTRIES. The map, by Maverick and Durand of New York, after the original Arrowsmith map, shows the Red River country, Lake Winnepeg, and north to Hudson Bay. Not in Lande. This copy brought $30 at the DePuy sale in 1920. We do not find any records of this New York edition appearing at auction in the post-World War II era. A landmark work of Canadiana, here in the rare American edition. TPL 1094. DePUY SALE 1010 (this copy). PEEL 48 (note). LANDE 1206 (London ed). SHAW & SHOEMAKER 44221.
