Don Giovanni. Vocal score. German & Italian. [Don Juan : Oper in zwey Aufzügen von W.A. Mozart. Nebst einem Anhang von später eingelegten Stücken. Klavierauszug von A.E. Müller.]

Leipzig: Breitkopf & Härtel, 1818. Hardcover. Very Good. Oblong folio (330 x 240mm). 184 pages. Complete vocal score. Notated music. Added engraved title page: Il dissoluto punito; osia, Il Don Giovanni. Dramma giocoso in due Atti posto in Musica da Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Ridotto per il Pianoforte da A.E. Müller with vignette of Don Giovanni scene by Fr. Bolt after Kininger, Pr. 4 Rthlr. Italian-German text. Richly bound in crushed green morocco handsomely gilt with device of lyre and central lozenge on front and rear covers, spine done in the same and lettered in gilt ?"Don Juan ?- Mozart,?" speckled edges; (toned and only lightly foxed, few pages margins lightly torn or with paper repairs, not frequent, good with all with engraved music otherwise). 1818 Leipzig printing for the vocal score of Mozart?'s famous opera ?'Don Giovanni?'. Italian librettos were translated into German owing to the growing popularity of opera in Germany during the last decade of the 18th century; contemporary to Mozart?'s death in 1791. Mozart immediately accepted at least the title under which on of his works would become known in the German-speaking countries: writing home on 3 October 1790, he reported, ?"on Tuesday the theatrical company of the elector of Mainz are performing my Don Juan.?" German communities variously received Mozart?'s operas; the battle between the aristocratic and bourgeois audiences raged to and fro. When Don Juan played for the first time in the Frankfurt theater it was deemed suitable ?"for the general public?" but not for its ?"educated section.?" Yet the critics could all concede of Mozart?'s popularity and that the subject matter turned the heads of the public. This fine, well-preserved dual text is an early and complete keyboard transcription of the opera. It gives Lorenzo da Ponte's original Italian, with the German translation by Schröder underneath. Excellent piece of music history and staple of the standard operatic repertoire.

        Eigenh. Brief mit U. ("Fouque").

Nennhausen bei Rathenow, 24. VI. 1818.. 2 SS. auf Doppelblatt. 4to..

STATEMENT RESPECTING THE EARL OF SELKIRK'S SETTLEMENT UPON THE RED RIVER IN NORTH AMERICA; ITS DESTRUCTION IN 1815 AND 1816; AND THE MASSACRE OF GOVERNOR SEMPLE AND HIS PARTY. WITH OBSERVATIONS UPON A RECENT PUBLICATION, ENTITLED, "A NARRATIVE OF OCCURRENCES IN THE INDIAN COUNTRIES," &c

New York: Published by James Eastburn & Co., 1818.. viii,194,[2],c pp. plus folding map. Half title. Later three-quarter morocco and marbled boards, spine gilt. Light shelf wear. Bookplates to front pastedown. Map backed with paper. Scattered light foxing, a bit of light staining to the appendix leaves. Very good. The Henry DePuy-Frank Deering copy, with their bookplates on the front pastedown. The Selkirk community was of particular interest to the former; most everything Americana-related was of interest to the latter. The first American edition, following the London edition (in two issues) printed the year before. Describes the history of Selkirk's settlement on the Red River and its differences with the North West Company. Halkett herein defends Lord Selkirk's Red River settlement against the aggressions of the North West Company. This edition contains added material answering to a work published under the North West Company's auspices, A NARRATIVE OF OCCURRENCES IN THE INDIAN COUNTRIES. The map, by Maverick and Durand of New York, after the original Arrowsmith map, shows the Red River country, Lake Winnepeg, and north to Hudson Bay. Not in Lande. This copy brought $30 at the DePuy sale in 1920. We do not find any records of this New York edition appearing at auction in the post-World War II era. A landmark work of Canadiana, here in the rare American edition. TPL 1094. DePUY SALE 1010 (this copy). PEEL 48 (note). LANDE 1206 (London ed). SHAW & SHOEMAKER 44221.

        Rural Residences

, 1818 1818. first edition. Papworth's Rural ResidencesFirst Edition in the Original Boards UncutPAPWORTH, John Buonarotti. Rural Residences, Consisting of A Series of Designs for Cottages, Decorated Cottages, Small Villas, and Other Ornamental Buildings, Accompanied by Hints on Situation, Construction, Arrangement and Decoration, In the Theory & Practice of Rural Architecture; Interspersed with Some Observations on Landscape Gardening. London: J.Diggens for R. Ackermann, 1818. First edition. Imperial octavo (11 x 7 1/2 inches; 278 x 192 mm.). viii, [9]-106, [2, index], [1, list of plates], [1, publisher's imprint] pp. Twenty-seven hand colored aquatint plates after Papworth. Text watermarked 1816 & 1817. Original drab boards uncut, neatly rebacked to style, endpapers renewed. Small light stain on pp.26/27, neat early ink signature dated 1822 at top of title-page. A spectacular, fine and fresh copy. Chemised in a later quarter green morocco slipcase, lerttered in gilt on spine. The genesis of this important work is explained in the introduction: "the following designs for rural buildings, accompanied by some practical observations, were presented to the public in the "Repository of Arts," under the title Architectural Hints, during successive months of the years 1816 and 1817. The proprietor of that work having received such applications for the series of designs in a separated form, as induces him to re-publish them; further observations have been added to supply, in part, the many deficiencies which necessarily occurred from so desultory a manner of publication." "A happy by-product of the designs having been published periodically is that they cover a large range of design: from small cottages for estate workers (including a garden, so that the uncultivated mind of the husbandman is kept occupied and out of the local village alehouse), through various cottage orné, a vicarage, a dairy, a fishing lodge, to perhaps the height of luxury: an ice house "calculated for an embellishment to the grounds of a nobleman, and contain[ing] in its plan and section all the requisites to the construction of an ice-well" (p.99).The fine hand colored plates include designs for various buildings including "Steward's Cottage", "A Bailiff's Cottage", "Gothic Cottage", several "Cottage Orné" plates, "A Vicarage House", several "Villas", "A Park Entrance", "A Gothic Conservatory", "A Dairy", "Fishing Lodge", "An Ice House", "Garden Seats", "A Verandah" and "A Domestic Chapel".A second edition was published in 1832.John Buonarotti Papworth (1775-1847) was an architect, artist, and founding member of the Royal Institute of British Architects. He was described by John Summerson as "one of the most versatile architects and decorative artists of the period". He contributed designs to Ackermann's Repository of the Arts for almost twenty years, and published some of his designs for houses as Designs for Rural Residences in 1818. In London, he designed shop fronts (one, for a tea merchant in Ludgate Hill, was in a "Chinese" style) and warehouses, and built or remodeled many villas for middle-class clients in the countryside. At Cheltenham he laid out the Montpellier Estate, and extended the Montpellier Pump Room (1825?-26), with a domed rotunda inspired by the Pantheon. He popularized the rustic "cottage ornée" style.Abbey Life 45; Archer 246.2; Brunet IV, 9814; Prideaux p. 347; Martin-Hardie, pp, 112,129, 312; Tooley 359.

        Rural Residences

London: J.Diggens for R. Ackermann, 1818. - Papworth's Rural ResidencesFirst Edition in the Original Boards UncutPAPWORTH, John Buonarotti. At Cheltenham he laid out the Montpellier Estate, and extended the Montpellier Pump Room (1825–26), with a domed rotunda inspired by the Pantheon. He popularized the rustic "cottage ornée" style.Abbey Life 45; Archer 246.2; Brunet IV, 9814; Prideaux p. 347; Martin-Hardie, pp, 112,129, 312; Tooley 359. [Attributes: First Edition]

TO WHICH IS ADDED AN APPENDIX, CONTAINING AN ACCOUNT OF LOUISIANA, AND OF THE MISSOURI AND COLUMBIA RIVERS, AS DISCOVERED BY THE VOYAGE UNDER CAPTAINS LEWIS AND CLARKE [sic].

Pittsburgh: Cramer & Spear, 1818. - 304pp. including twenty-eight full-page woodcut maps. Contemporary three- quarter calf and marbled boards, spine gilt. Boards rubbed and quite worn around edges, two minor instances of paper loss on front board. Toned, scattered foxing and staining. Good. The first navigational guide to the Ohio and Mississippi rivers, with Lewis and Clark material appended. This vitally important work in helping to develop the commerce of the early United States, containing woodcut maps of the length of the aforementioned rivers as well as an early plan of Pittsburgh, was the "most widely used guide to western waters in the early period both before and after the application of steam in 1807" (Howes). This edition is styled on the title as the tenth. Also of interest is the appearance in this later edition of an account of Louisiana and the Missouri and Columbia rivers as discovered by Lewis and Clark. The Lewis and Clark material (see pp.290-295) is derived from Patrick Gass' journal, which was also printed by Cramer in Pittsburgh. HOWES C855. SABIN 17386.

This 'Omaggio', therfore, belongs to the great bibliographical rarities" (Encyclopaedia Americana. Vol. 3, p. 194). - Die imposanten Kupfertafeln gestochen von Fontana, Hayes, Zuliani, Canova, Borsato, Ferrari und anderen zeigen - neben den gesuchten detailreichen Veduten des Markusplatzes, der Rialtobrücke, der Palazzo Giardino und des Inneren der Markuskirche - antike Gegenstände wie Vasen, Fresken, Faune und allegorische Szenen. - Breitrandiges Exemplar.         1818. Arranged alphabetically according to names. Nonresident Voters for the Borough and Hundred of Aylesbury. [title thus - with calligraphic flourishes - on upper cover].>

8vo., (19 x 12 cms.), manuscript in ink on paper, approximately 140 written up pages (excluding blanks), all ruled in red, ledger style, with numerous original alterations and deletions, original parchment covered boards, covers a bit soiled else in very good state of preservation (now kept in a fitted cloth box, spine lettered). The general Parliamentary election of 1818 for the Aylesbury constituency was contested between George Grenville (Baron Nugent), William Rickford and Charles Compton Cavendish, the Cavendish party losing heavily. The enfranchised voters totalled about 1000, comprising, in 1818, both inhabitant householders and 40s. freeholders. The present list of non-resident voters throws some light on the diaspora of many of the voters whose places of residence covered not only almost all the Home Counties but also places much further afield. [For a scholarly commentary on the election itself, see Thorne, H. of C. 1790-1820, II,> pp.21-22].
