- \"Jean Léopold Nicolas Frédéric Cuvier (1769 – 1832), known as Georges Cuvier, was a French naturalist and zoologist, sometimes referred to as the \"father of paleontology\". Cuvier was a major figure in natural sciences research in the early 19th century and was instrumental in establishing the fields of comparative anatomy and paleontology through his work in comparing living animals with fossils. - Cuvier\'s work is considered the foundation of vertebrate paleontology, and he expanded Linnaean taxonomy by grouping classes into phyla and incorporating both fossils and living species into the classification. Cuvier is also known for establishing extinction as a fact—at the time, extinction was considered by many of Cuvier\'s contemporaries to be merely controversial speculation. In his Essay on the Theory of the Earth (1813) Cuvier was interpreted to have proposed that new species were created after periodic catastrophic floods. In this way, Cuvier became the most influential proponent of catastrophism in geology in the early 19th century. His study of the strata of the Paris basin with Alexandre Brongniart established the basic principles of biostratigraphy. - Among his other accomplishments, Cuvier established that elephant-like bones found in the USA belonged to an extinct animal he later would name as a mastodon, and that a large skeleton dug up in Paraguay was of Megatherium, a giant, prehistoric ground sloth. He named the pterosaur Pterodactylus, described (but did not discover or name) the aquatic reptile Mosasaurus, and was one of the first people to suggest the earth had been dominated by reptiles, rather than mammals, in prehistoric times. - Cuvier is also remembered for strongly opposing theories of evolution, which at the time (before Darwin\'s theory) were mainly proposed by Jean-Baptiste de Lamarck and Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire. Cuvier believed there was no evidence for evolution, but rather evidence for cyclical creations and destructions of life forms by global extinction events such as deluges. In 1830, Cuvier and Geoffroy engaged in a famous debate, which is said to exemplify the two major deviations in biological thinking at the time – whether animal structure was due to function or (evolutionary) morphology. Cuvier supported function and rejected Lamarck\'s thinking.

ROMAN ANTIQUITIES The series of views Antichità Romane, made of 101 plates, was realized with the proceeds of the sale of the plates used for Raccolta di cinquanta principali vedute di antichità tratte dai scavi fatti in Roma in questi ultimi tempi divided in 40 views, published in 1817. This is the work with which the artist wanted to become one of the most important artists in the Roman cultural life; we can state that if we consider the size of the work and the subject he choose. In this work Rossini tested himself with his predecessor, G. B. Piranesi, who was considered as a point of reference when it came to ancient views and originality. Rossini, was deeply influenced by Piranesi, as it can be seen in the title, the legends, the same points of views and framing. Another important element he took from Piranesi is the use of light and the contrast of chiaroscuro. In these plates Rossini reached the higher mastery of the technique, realizing also extremely particular framings and a new and complex organization of the space. In the plates quite common is the diagonal view of the subject, which gave him the possibility to elaborate more the chiaroscuro. However, since the work is made of many plates, it is quite discontinuous and some of the plates present some indecision in the perspective formulation and a little harshness in the mark. Always following the tradition of his time, Rossini's choice of the subjects does not present any kind of originality; he actually depicted all the main archaeological sites and monuments of Rome. The sole novelty is represented by the precise record of the excavation works and analysis. Quite interesting, from a documental point of view, are the last four engravings depicting the destruction of the Basilica of St. Paul outside the wall, after the fire of July the 15th, 1823. The will to give life to his views, the reinstatement of the monuments to their historic context and the fact that he was not good with figures, brought Rossini to start a partnership with Bartolomeo Pinelli, Roman engraver and costume illustrator of daily life. He was the one who realized the figures of Rossini's views. Sometimes Pinelli took the subjects from his previous collection Costumi pittoreschi romani. Roma Rome Luigi Rossini incisore.       Calcutta printed by Philip Pereira, at the Hindoostanee press 1817 - The founding document of the Calcutta School-Book Society, one of the earliest and most influential of the school-book societies which sprung up across India under government patronage. These societies were created to produce Western-style text-books in vernacular languages, to satisfy the demand generated by the proliferation of mission and other schools. By 1821 the Calcutta Society had issued over 100,000 copies of educational books and pamphlets. In 1862 the Calcutta School-Book Society merged with the Vernacular Literature Society. Many leading Bengali intellectuals were associated with the Society, including Mrityunjay Biyalankar, Tarini Charan Mitra, Ram Komal Sen, and Radhakant Deb. The appendix (longer than the report itself) contains a "sketch of the states and wants of" the various language departments – Bengali, Hindoostanee, Persian, Arabic, and Sanskrit. COPAC records one copy only, in Aberdeen Bound in recent half calf. With manuscript additions to the last (folded) subscription leaf. A very good copy, some minor spotting. First edition Octavo, pp.vi, 11, [1], 48, errata slip. The very scarce first edition: the fact that it was privately published by Shillibeer in Taunton, Devon, may explain its surprising rarity. This is one of the more elusive pieces of Pacificana, and one of the more delightful. Shillibeer's account of his adventures is thoroughly idiosyncratic in style, as are the etched plates - all after his own drawings - which have an appealing naïveté. One can only admire the eccentricity of his view of Juan Fernandez being printed in ochre - as it is "the native colour of that island".The narrative of the voyage of the Briton is also of great importance for Pacific history, particularly for the material that it contains relating to the mutiny on the Bounty. Shillibeer was one of the first to piece together the later history of the mutineers, largely as a result of his meeting and interview with John Adams, the last survivor of the mutiny. The visit to Pitcairn itself is described at length, and there is a good view of the island and a portrait of Friday Christian, Fletcher Christian's son. Shillibeer also describes visits to Chile and Peru, as well as the Galapagos Islands, and the search for the predatory American frigate the Essex. The popularity of this book led to two further editions in quick succession, a direct reflection of public curiosity about the revelation of Pitcairn and the mutineers. This particular copy is bound with two other books on the Napoleonic wars, being Colonel Sherer's Recollections of the Peninsula (London 1824), and the anonymously compiled Battle of Waterloo (London, third edition of 1815) featuring a splendid folding panorama of the battlefield printed on two sheets.

Milano, Giovanni Giuseppe Destefanis, 1817. Poems.

London: C. & J. Ollier,, 1817. Octavo (164 × 102 mm). Mid 19th-century pink half calf, green morocco label to spine lettered gilt, gilt raised bands to spine, marbled sides, edges speckled red. Half title. Wood engraving of Edmund Spenser on title page. Title page inscribed with "First Edition" in a contemporary hand. Spine and tips a little rubbed, faint spotting to endpapers. An excellent copy. First edition of Keats's first book, with the rare half-title. Poems was published on 3 March 1817 by Charles and James Ollier, who were already publishing Shelley. The first of a mere three lifetime publications, it is a work of mainly youthful promise ? Keats had appeared for the first time in print less than a year earlier, with a poem in the radical weekly The Examiner on 5 May 1816. The 1817 Poems attracted a few good reviews, but these were followed by the first of several harsh attacks by the influential Blackwood's Magazine, mainly by critics who resented Keats's avowed kinship with the despised Leigh Hunt. The best-known poem in the book is the sonnet "On first looking into Chapman's Homer", "by common consent one of its masterpieces in this form, having a close unsurpassed for the combined qualities of serenity and concentration" (Colvin), and described by ODNB as "an astonishing achievement, with a confident formal assurance and metaphoric complexity which make it one of the finest English sonnets. As Hunt generously acknowledged, it 'completely announced the new poet taking possession' (Hunt, Lord Byron, 249)" (ODNB).

Essay on the Theory of the Earth. With mineralogical notes, and an account of Cuvier's geological discoveries, by Professor Jameson. Third Edition, with additions.

Edinburgh, Blackwood and London, Baldwin, Cradock and Joy 1817 - Lith. - "Jean Léopold Nicolas Frédéric Cuvier (1769 – 1832), known as Georges Cuvier, was a French naturalist and zoologist, sometimes referred to as the "father of paleontology". Cuvier was a major figure in natural sciences research in the early 19th century and was instrumental in establishing the fields of comparative anatomy and paleontology through his work in comparing living animals with fossils. - Cuvier's work is considered the foundation of vertebrate paleontology, and he expanded Linnaean taxonomy by grouping classes into phyla and incorporating both fossils and living species into the classification. Cuvier is also known for establishing extinction as a fact—at the time, extinction was considered by many of Cuvier's contemporaries to be merely controversial speculation. - Cuvier is also remembered for strongly opposing theories of evolution, which at the time (before Darwin's theory) were mainly proposed by Jean-Baptiste de Lamarck and Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire. Cuvier supported function and rejected Lamarck's thinking. (.)"

Def. [Defauconpret]

Paris: Gide [and] Nicolle, 1817. Ownership inscriptions; a few light spots, but in good condition.. Two volumes, octavo; an uncut copy with good margins in contemporary French quarter crimson morocco gilt with matching crimson glazed boards, gilt crowned cipher at centre of each side. From the library of Napoleon's second wife, Empress Marie-Louise, later the Duchess of Parma, with her crowned monogram in gilt on the bindings which are in the Empress's traditional crimson style. The famous library was dispersed in the 1930s and books with this remarkable provenance appear occasionally on the market. The library was strong in natural history, but also in voyage books: this is the first French edition of Martin's important account of William Mariner's four years in Tonga between 1806 and 1810, which provided the first really detailed account of life in the islands, although they has been discovered as far back as 1616 (by Schouten), with the first effective contact with Europeans dating from Cook's voyages in 1773 and 1777. This French version was not recorded by Ferguson (although copies are now known to be held in the State Library of New South Wales and the National Library of Australia), and no copy appears in the catalogues of the Hill or the Kroepelien collections. It appeared in the same year as the first of a number of English editions.Mariner was a young British sailor on the Port au Prince, a whaler which sailed in 1805, but spent much of her time attacking Spanish shipping. In the spring of 1806 she captured two ships, the brig Santa Isidora and the corbeta Santa Maria, both of which were then sent to Port Jackson to be sold. The Port au Prince visited Hawaii in late 1806, then sailed with a number of Hawaiian crew. At Tonga the crew mutinied, and most were massacred by the natives, but Mariner came under the protection of the King and lived there as his adopted son for four years. Mariner's story was cited by Byron as one of the two sources for his poem The Island, or Christian and his Comrades, a romantic narrative of the Bounty mutiny. The work includes a grammar and a Tongan-English dictionary, with a further important appendix "on the surgical skills of the Tonga people", with references to similar practices in Hawaii. This is one of the earliest accounts of indigenous medical practices in the Pacific.John Martin, Mariner's ghost-writer, was a physician and meteorologist of some note. This French translation was by Auguste-Jean-Baptiste Defauconpret (who also prepared the first French edition of the first voyage of Sir John Franklin for the same publisher in 1824).

The Triumphs Of Temper. A Poem: in six Cantos. A New Edition

      - Chichester: William Mason for T. Cadell and W. Davies, 1817. Sm. 8vo, xii, 166pp. With a color-printed frontispiece by Brown after Romney. Slightly later polished calf gilt, backstrip richly gilt, marbled edges, signature at front of H. Cotes dated 1821. Ink corrections to the text, perhaps by Cotes. A beautiful copy handsomely bound, with the frontispiece printed in five colors. Friedman, Color Printing in England, #31. The Vershbow copy, with bookplate. DNB notes: "Possibly his greatest achievement, however, was his didactic poem Triumphs of Temper (1781), which 'was to reform the entire feminine mind of England by the advice' (Bishop, 53). This allegorical work aspired, in rhyming couplets, to teach young women the virtues of a pleasant nature. Its advice was heeded by some: Emma Hamilton thanked Hayley 'for the lessons she had learnt from the poem' (P. Jaffe, Drawings by George Romney, 1978, 44) and asked Romney to inform Hayley that his poem 'made me Lady H. ? for Sir W. minds more temper than beauty' (ibid.). Triumphs of Temper ran into fourteen editions and proved to be the most durable of all his publications." [Attributes: Hard Cover]
