Pomona Britannica, or a collection of the most esteemed fruits at present cultivated in Great Britain.

London: T. Bensley for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme & Brown and John Lepard, [1816]-1817. - 2 volumes. 4to., (14 x 11 3/8 inches). 2 letterpress title-pages, 4-page letterpress list of owners and locations of gardens at end (occasional spotting). 60 EXCEPTIONALLY FINE stipple-engraved plates by G. Brookshaw, printed in colour and finished by hand (occasional light spotting). Contemporary half maroon morocco, maroon cloth, the spines each in six compartments separated by five raised bands, gilt lettered in two (extremities quite rubbed and worn with loss). First quarto edition, first published as a large folio between 1804-1812. This edition is essentially a new work: the format was reduced from broadsheet to quarto, the plates were re-engraved by the author himself, their number reduced from 90 to 60, and the text was extensively re-worked. In this new work the plates are more realistic and useful, if less opulent, and include details of 174 cultivars of 15 types of fruit. The table at the end lists the owners and locations of the gardens from which Brookshaw obtained his specimens. All of the gardens are found within, or a short distance from London. Brookshaw was something of an enigma during his lifetime. His first career as a cabinet-maker specialising in painted furniture garnered him considerable success, wealth and royal patronage. Then in the mid-1790s he suddenly separated from his wife and abandoned cabinet-making, turning instead to teaching drawing, and publishing drawing manuals under the name of G. Brown. "Brookshaw's most important published work, which indeed is of some botanical significance, was his finely illustrated treatise on fruit growing, the Pomona Britannica, issued in parts from 1804-when he first resumed his own name-and as a single folio volume in 1812. It was dedicated to his most illustrious former patron, the Prince of Wales. But Brookshaw's renown in the botanical world never matched that of his cabinet-making career, and he failed to gain recognition by Sir Joseph Banks, Sir J. E. Smith, and other luminaries of the recently founded Horticultural Society-perhaps in part because of the mystery surrounding his past, which he undoubtedly suppressed deliberately" (Lucy Wood for DNB). Provenance: With the contemporary bookplate of R. Chardey to front pastedown. From the important library of Jean R. Perrette, his sale, Ex Libris Jean R. Perrette: Important Travel, Exploration & Cartography, April 5, 2016, Christie's sale 12259, Lot 415, with Perrette's bookplate to the front pastedown. First edition. Describes the naval battle of Ushant between the Surveillante and HMS Quebec, in the early stages of the Anglo-French War (1778-1783). The war began when France formed an alliance with the United States during the American Revolutionary War and evolved into a global war spanning continents, with battles fought in many theatres. From 1778 to 1783, with or without their allies, France and Britain fought over dominance in the English Channel, the Mediterranean, the Indian Ocean and the West Indies. The eventual French victory was vital in the United States' independence from Britain. On 6 October 1779, the French frigate 'Surveillante,' helmed by Captain Couédic de Kergoaler, met with the 32-gun HMS 'Quebec,' led by Captain George Farmer, off the coast of the island of Ushant. A furious, three-and-a-half-hour-long battle ensued, with both sides suffering heavy casualties, and both ships completely dismasted. The battle ended when the 'Quebec,' firing through her own sails (which covered her gunports), caught fire and exploded. The 'Surveillante,' her hull leaking, had suffered 30 dead and 85 wounded. Her boat rescued whatever British crew had survived, and British and French sailors then had to work together to keep her afloat. She returned to Brest the next day, and the British are said to have been treated as castaways rather than prisoners of war. Sabin 69279.         Analyse de l'Opium. De la Morphine et de l'Acide meconique, consideres comme parties essentielles de l'opium. [Analysis of Opium. Concerning Morphine and Meconic Acid, which are considered to be the main ingredients of Opium]

Annales de Chimie et de Physique, 1817, Disbound, Book Condition: Very Good Condition, First Edition. This is the first use of the word Morphine in a scientific paper, following Sertuerner's certain identification of the substance, which he achieved by experimenting firstly on dogs, and then on himself and three young boys, with rather inevitably near lethal consequences. Sertuerner was thus the first person to succeed in isolating an active ingredient from a plant, opening the pathway to modern alkaloid chemistry. An important work regarding a key moment in the history of science and medicine. 22 pages. With the front cover to the volume it has been extracted from. A disbound article. Note; this is an original article separated from a bound volume, not a reprint or an offprint. Size: Octavo (standard book size). Quantity Available: 1.         The Rights of Man. Being an Answer to Mr. Burke's Attack on the French Revolution. [bound with] .Part the Second, Combining Principle and Practice. [and] Sherwin's Weekly Political Register. Nos. 1 [to] 16, Vol. II (Oct. 4, 1817 - Jan. 17, 1818)

London: W.T. Sherwin, 1817 - 8vo. vii, 98, (1); (xii), 118, iv, (2); 138 pp. Twentieth century tan morocco over matching boards by Chivers of Bath. Occasional light foxing, very good. An instant bestseller on its publication in 1791, its radical views led to a flurry of opposing pamphlets and quickly to Paine's exile. Still one of the most influential political tracts ever, it was dedicated to George Washington - "That the Rights of Man may become as universal as your benevolence can wish, and that you may enjoy the happiness of seeing the New World regenerate the Old." ".the clearest of all expositions of the basic principles of democracy." (Printing and the Mind of Man 241). Sherwin's Political Register was an enterprise founded by the fellow radicals Richard Carlile and William Sherwin, publishers of new editions of many of Paine's work. It was issued weekly between April 1817 and August 1819 and usually consisted of reports, articles and letters on the radical politics of the day, generally making itself unpopular with the Government and with the threat of prosecution never far away. Indeed, Carlile published the earliest first hand account of the Peterloo Massacre in one of its final issues, leading to its suppression and prompt refounding, a week or so later, as The Republican. Uncommon. Gimbel pp 93, 109. Complete with both parts.

Plates minimally affected in margins, images not affected. Half title and title page with light browning. Uncut. Overall in very good condition. Signature of [2.º?] Visconde de Villarinho de São Romão [?] on half title, with paper coat-of-arms in colors tipped on. Small oblong tickets of Livraria Academica and Esquina, Lda., Porto, in upper outer corner of front free endleaf verso. (4 ll.), cxxx pp., (1 blank l.), 413 pp., 12 finely engraved plates [frontispiece portrait of Camões, plate of Camões in Macau, and 1 plate preceding each of the 10 Cantos], with tissue guards to all plates, all printed, except that for the frontispiece, as is required. *** First issue, with the word "poder" in stanza XXX of Canto X in uncorrected state. This copy lacks the 10-page @Supplemento (paginated 415-424), issued separately in 1818 and rarely present (especially so in the case of the first issue), as most copies had been distributed before the @Supplemento was printed. Nicely printed on excellent paper, the edition was said to have been limited to 210 copies, of which 182 were offered gratis to many of the leading libraries and personalities of Europe. "A impressão luxuosa e extraordinariamente nitida, com caracteres inteiramente novos, é um padrão da perfeição typographica usada na opulenta casa Didot, de que ella já dera a prova em honra do nosso egregio poeta na edição anterior, de menor formato" (Brito Aranha). No expense was spared by the fifth Morgado de Mateus, D. José Maria de Sousa Botelho Mourão e Vasconcelos (1758-1825), a great landowner with holdings centered at Vila Real, one of the richest men in Europe, at whose behest the edition was produced. The Morgado de Mateus also wrote the introduction, consisting of an "Advertência" (pp. i-xlviii) and a "Vida de Camões" (pp. xlix-cxxx). Lignon engraved the frontispiece portrait of Camões after a design by Gérard, while Forsell (after Dessenne) engraved Camões in the @gruta named for him in Macau. The remaining 10 plates were engraved by Massard, Oortman, Henri Laurent, Bovinet, Pigeot, Toschi, Forster, and Richomme after designs by Dessenne (3) and Fragonard (7). *** Innocêncio V, 262-3. Brito Aranha, @A obra monumental de Luiz de Camões. Braga, @Bibliographia Camoniana pp. 63-4.         Italian scenery [i.e., Select views in Italy, with topographical and historical descriptions, in English and French].

[London: Printed by W. Bulmer and Co. for J. Smith, W. Byrne, & J. Edwards 4to. [1] f. (engr. dedication), [78] ff. (of letterpress), [72] ff. of plates, illus.. 1817] Smith is remembered in art circles as a very accomplished water color artist and it was that work that attracted the attention of George Greville, second earl of Warwick. The earl became Smith's patron and sent him Italy where he produced such works as "Outside Porta Pia, Rome" (now in the Tate collection) and "Interior of the Coliseum" (now in the British Museum); "his Italian pictures . . . are considered Smith's best" (ODNB). Toward the end of the 18th century (1792–1799), Smith produced the first edition of this work, laden with => 72 engravings (by various artisans) after his original watercolors. This second edition of his Select Views in Italy was not issued with a title-page, although some copies have a copy (reprinting?, remainder sheet?) of the first edition's; it begins instead with a splendidly calligraphic => engraved dedication leaf reading, "Italian scenery. To the Queen's most Excellent Majesty this Collection of Select Views in italy is with Her Majesty's gracious permission Humbly dedicated by Her most obedient and devoted Servant, John Smith." Dated in text 18 January 1817, the leaf was designed by Tomkins and engraved by Ashby; at its bottom, as on a title-page, is "London[,] J. Smith, W. Byrne, & J. Edwards." The text in this edition, bilingual in => English and French, is the same as that of the first edition; but it was entirely reset and the plates are restrikes of those of the first edition, with the original imprints removed and the numeration moved to the top of the plates. This is, therefore, a particularly interesting object to => set beside an example of its first edition! Provenance: No bookplates or inscriptions, but spine with initials "G.O.B." tooled at base. 20th-century cordovan-color sheep, covers framed in single gilt fillet with gilt-stamped corner fleurons; spine with gilt-stamped leather title-label, gilt-ruled raised bands, and gilt-stamped fleurons in compartments; spine sunned/lightened with darker streaks and patches evident, one spine compartment with small scuff, joints with excellent repairs and corners likewise well refurbished. Text with only an occasional age-stain or instance of foxing; plates remarkably unblemished. Blue silk placemarker. Overall indeed a => very nice copy.

Prijs: € 4.250,- (incl. 21% BTW, incl. lijst).

printed for the author, by W. Bulmer & Co., Shakespeare Press, London 1817 - First edition, 3 volumes, imp. 8vo, 37 plates (including 2 folding), plus many other engraved vignettes and woodcut illustrations and facsimiles in the text, several printed in color, several mounted, plus one mounted red leather label printed in gold; later full tan morocco, triple gilt rules on covers, gilt-lettered direct on gilt-decorated spines, a.e.g.; a few of the plates a bit spotted, else a very nice copy. Without the oft-missing "Presentation in the Temple" plate in vol. I. This is the only edition of one of Dibdin's most famous books (there were 50 on large paper) and certainly one of the best printed. Dibdin destroyed the plates for the book at a meeting of the Roxburgh Club. "This work forms one of the monuments of typographical bibliography. As in the style of its production it is the most sumptuous, so in the nature of its contents it may be said to be one of the most interesting books relative to ancient and modern printing" (Bigmore & Wyman).         JOURNAL OF THE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY, LOWER-CANADA.

Quebec. 1793-1817. - Twenty-four volumes. Later brown cloth, red and black gilt morocco labels. Printed in alternating English and French. Slight wear to and moderate soiling on covers. Occasional foxing. First view leaves of first volume torn along lower blank margin. Occasional old institutional markings. Overall very good. A large and impressive archive of Canadian laws. In an effort to pacify the disparate French and British populations of Canada, the Constitutional Act of 1791 divided Canada in two. Upper Canada was primarily populated by Loyalist emigrants of the American Revolution, while the citizenry of Lower Canada, which included Quebec, was mostly of French descent. These are the laws of Lower Canada, printed in English and French. Though the first volume appeared in 1793, it includes material from the first session of the first Parliament, held in December 1792. The series continued till 1836. "Public accounts are included in the early numbers of the Journals, and from 1809 to 1835-36 Sessional papers are published as appendices to the Journals" - TPL. Present here is a complete run from its inception to 1813, with an additional volume for 1817. The twenty-third, twenty- fourth, and twenty fifth volumes are lacking. Scarce. OCLC locates only six complete runs. A prime resource for the study of Canadian legal history. TPL 640. SABIN 10491. OCLC 11820245, 48957532. TRÉMAINE 835.
