        Anvil

Published by Edward Orme, London 1817 - A magnificent portrait of the famous stallion Anvil, by the master equine painter George Stubbs. George Stubbs is considered to be one of the greatest English painters. His ingenious animal and sporting pictures remain unrivalled in their passionate depiction of emotion and their commitment to naturalistic observation. Stubbs was briefly apprenticed to the painter Hamlet Winstanley, a relationship that quickly ended, leaving the young artist to his own education. In contrast to contemporary academic theory, Stubbs' attached great importance to the belief that art should imitate nature, not the work of other artists. He spent years carefully studying human and equine anatomy so that he could truthfully represent natural form and movement. A result of this study was his famous Anatomy of the Horse , which details, with beautiful engraving, the various elements of a horse's anatomy, from skeletal form to muscular definition. By the 1760's, Stubbs had developed a considerable reputation as a sporting artist and had attracted a number of distinguished patrons. Continuing in search of innovation, Stubbs began experimenting with a myriad of different mediums, becoming accomplished in both enamels and printmaking. Through arduous application, he became a talented mezzotint engraver and worked with ease in both soft ground and etching techniques. Stubbs' masterful paintings inspired some of the greatest engravers of the day to reproduce his work for publication, including his own son George Townly Stubbs who reproduced with faithful accuracy the sublime emotion inherent in his father's exquisite works. Stubbs was elected Director of the Society of Artists and a Royal Academician, and today his prized paintings are housed in some of the finest museums in the world. Stubbs was often commissioned to paint accurate portraits of specific steeds for proud aristocratic patrons, who wished to highlight their horses' racing success. This practice is expertly exemplified with this magnificent print of the stallion Anvil, bred by Thomas Paton. The image shows Anvil in an enclosed paddock, and exhibits a keen attention to naturalistic detail. Anvil was first a stallion in the stud of the Prince of Wales and went on to win a great number of races at some of the best courses in England. This beautiful print demonstrates that, with subtle atmospheric effects and complex compositional structure, Stubbs succeeds in raising the genre of equine portraiture to a poetic level. Lennox-Boyd, George Stubbs 114, ii/iii; Siltzer, The Story of British Sporting Prints , p. 272. Stipple with etching, colour-printed with hand-colouring. State iii/iii, with the title in closed letters, and engraved inscription: "George Stubbs pinxt.*** Geo. Townly Stubbs sculpt. Engraver to His R.H. the Prince of Wales. / London Republished June 4th. 1817, *** ANVIL. *** by Edwd. Orme, Bond Street"

The Preface warns that the book 'contains, we believe, the only exact account which has ever been made publicly known of the private manners and conduct of this African Despot, and it details such scenes and events, it gives such sketches of human weakness and vice, the effects of ambition, avarice, envy, and intrigue, as will seem scarcely credible to the mind of an European.'         Studies of Chess: Containing a Systematic Introduction to the Game; and the Analysis of Chess

Printed for Samuel Bagster, Samuel Bagster 1817 - xxxii+428 pages with diagrams and frontispiece. Octavo (8 1/4" x 5 1/2") issued in half leather with marbled boards. Edited by Peter Pratt. (Whyld: 1817:19) 5th edition. 1st published in 1749. Although Philidor was the greatest chess player of his time, he professed to be just a musical composer (of which he was great in his day), because chess was not fully understood by the masses. He was the first great blindfold chess player, playing three opponents while blindfolded. He did this three times. In the 18th century, this almost amounted to witchcraft. He was the first to understand the value of playing the pawns correctly and hence wrote the first real strategy book on chess. He invented the Philidor's Defense: His musical skills were of the highest order. In his career, he composed more than 20 operas. At the age of six, he became a member of the Chapel-Royal choir in Versailles. This is where he learned chess, as musicians in those days were very knowledgeable in chess, or at least, more than the average person. He learned by watching others play. There were other great players that learned chess this way: Morphy, Capablanca, Karpov, etc. At the age of 11, his first musical composition was played before King Louis XV. That is definitely big time stuff. When he was 14, his voice changed, and he had to leave the Chapel-Royal choir. At 15, he was tutored in chess by France's greatest chess player of the day, Sire de Legal. Three years later, he quit instructing Philidor, because he became stronger than he was. At 18, Philidor had become the strongest chess player in the world, with no one to tutor him anymore. At this time (1744), Philidor played two chess games blindfolded simultaneously in public in Paris. He said he learned how to do this when he could not sleep at night and played chess without sight of a chessboard. This was the first time blindfold play against two opponents was ever recorded. Philidor became quite famous with his chess abilities at this time. He played chess against Voltaire and Rousseau. And, of course, he creamed them. At the age of 19, Philidor went to Rotterdam, Holland to present his musical compositions. But the concerts were cancelled and he was stranded in Holland with no money. He then supported himself by teaching and playing chess and Polish checkers, especially to English army officers at The Hague. At the age of 21, he travelled to London, England and beat the two best English chess players of the day, Stamma and Sir Janssen, at Slaughter's coffee house. Philidor was at the top of the world at this point. Phillip Stamma was the best English player, and Philidor challenged him to a ten-game match with an extraordinary set of rules. Philidor insisted that Stamma play White in all of the games, and that any draw would count as a win for Stamma. This is either cocky or stupid. Nevertheless, Stamma accepted the terms (who wouldn't?) and Philidor won 8 games and lost 2, one of the losses being a drawn game. He also beat Sir Janssen 4 wins and 1 loss. At 22, Philidor wrote L'analyze des Eschecs (Analysis of Chess). Some of the early subscriptions were: Lord Sandwich (10 copies), Duke of Cumberland (50 copies), English army officers (119 copies). This made Philidor and the publishers quite wealthy. At 23, 433 copies of his book were published in London, England. It was the first chess book translated into Russian, and was one of the favorite books of Thomas Jefferson. This was the first chess book that organized the chess openings. He was invited to the courts of Europe to play chess in front of the royalties. He played in King Frederick's castle at Potsdam. He played for the Duke of Mirepoix. In 1755, he beat the great Legal in a match at the Café del la Regence in Paris, France. He spent the next 40 years of his life intermixing chess and composing music. In 1795, at the age of 68, he died in London, England. The newspaper obituary read, "On Monday last, Mr. Philidor, the celebrated chess player, [Attributes: Hard Cover]

[New York, not after 1817.] 164 x 105 mm. Original marbled paper wrappers, slight wear at spine. Minor browning and foxing but very good.</p><p>An early 19th-century American medical student&#39;s notebook containing notes of clinical lectures delivered at the New York Hospital (forerunner of the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons). The lecturers were Dr. William Hammersley (1766-1837), professor of the clinical practice of medicine; Dr. Wright Post (1766-1828), professor of anatomy, physiology and surgery; Dr. John C. Osborn (1741-1825), professor of midwifery and the diseases of women and children; and Dr. James Stringham (d. 1817), professor of medical jurisprudence. The notebook includes discussions of specific cases, such as "Man 45 taken into the hospital for dropsical complaints," "Boy brought into the hospital for an ulcer on the inner side of the ankle," and "Man--attempt at suicide--cut across the most formidable part of the thyroid cartilage." The lectures also cover topics such as surgery, cesarean section, virginity, pregnancy (real and false), mania, infections, blindness, plague, poisons, impotence, etc. Student notebooks such as these give a revealing picture of the state of American medical education in the first decades of the nineteenth century. </p>

Not in Hirsch, or Beethoven-Haus (all copies with blank page 1) or Hoboken 2 (illustrating title of earlier Steiner printing). The arrangement of this orchestral work is by Beethoven himself. It was first published by Birchall in London in January of 1816. "Beethoven's 'Battle Symphony,' more correctly entitled Wellington's Victory of the Battle of Victoria (op. 91), came into being as the result of an idea by Maelzel that Beethoven should write a work for his latest invention, the panharmonicon, a sort of mechanical orchestra. The timing coincided with Wellington's defeat of Napoleon in 1813... It is a programmatic piece for a large orchestra with a battery of military and Turkish percussion instruments, including cannons and muskets. The first section opens with an English bugle call followed by the patriotic tune Rule, Britannia, answered by a French bugle call and marching tune, known in Britain as For he's a jolly good fellow. Then comes a depiction of the battle. Part 2, called 'Victory Symphony,' begins and ends with martial music but is otherwise based largely on the British national anthem, which is treated fugally." Cooper: The Beethoven Compendium, p. 220. A very good copy of an early issue, including the subscription advertisement.

        The History of British India

London: Baldwin, Cradock, and Joy,, 1817. 3 volumes, quarto (270 x 210 mm). Contemporary tan half calf neatly rebacked to style and corners repaired, green morocco labels, decorated gilt in compartments, all edges speckled red, no half-titles as issued, p. 566 reads 556 in Volume I as usual. 2 folding engraved maps, one hand-coloured. Boards slightly rubbed, slight foxing to endleaves and maps, else foxing occasional and very light, maps with faint offsetting, tiny closed tears to top gutters and slight creasing to fore edges, horizontal closed tear p. 757 of Volume III. An excellent set. First edition of the nineteenth-century standard reference work on India. James Mill (1773&#150;1836) worked for twelve years on his History of British India while struggling to make ends meet as a journalist in London. He later wrote "had I foreseen that it would be one half or one third of what it has been, never should I have been the author of a History of India". But his hard work paid off and his book, "a story of ideas and institutions, of historical stages and processes, more than of flesh-and-blood human beings and the din of battle" (ODNB), was an immediate success and led - together with the support of Ricardo and Joseph Hume - to his appointment as examiner of correspondence at the London office of the East India Company. It is an astonishing fact that such a comprehensive work was written by someone who never visited India, an issue which Mill addressed in the preface, turning it to his advantage, as a guarantee of his objectivity.

        The History of Java

London: Printed for Black, Parbury, and Allen, Booksellers to the Hon. East-India Company and John Murray, , 1817. 2 volumes, quarto (273 × 213 mm). Contemporary russia, skilfully rebacked with the original spine laid down, title direct to the spines, broad flat bands, compartments attractively gilt, quadruple fillet panels to the boards with arabesque corner-pieces, gilt zig-zag edge-roll, marbled edges and endpapers. 10 superb hand-coloured aquatint costume plates after William Daniell, and 56 uncoloured aquatint plates, one folding, 8 exquisite engraved vignettes, large folding map, coloured in outline, numerous tables, 2 of them folding. Just a little rubbed, light browning to the text, some mild spotting to the plates, but virtually none of the often-encountered offsetting from the plates, overall a handsome and excellently preserved copy. First edition. "The marriage of a scientifically original text with beautiful illustrations by an accomplished aquatint engraver resulted in a book about Indonesia of outstanding quality; indeed a masterpiece" (Bastin & Brommer). Raffles was appointed lieutenant governor of Java in 1811 when the island and its dependencies were occupied by Lord Minto following the Annexation of the Netherlands by Napoleon. During the next four years he extended the area of European control and reorganised the Dutch colonial system in the island, as well as making an extensive study of the history, customs and languages of the region. Although described by C.M. Turnbull in ODNB as "betraying hasty composition," The History of Java, is a remarkable work of synthesis, combining natural history - he enlisted the help of the American botanist Thomas Horsfield, who sent specimens to Banks at Kew - history, anthropology, philology and topography. The superb plates with their images of costume, architecture, native implements and weapons, Buddhist iconography, and alphabets; the extensive tabulation of population and cultivation province by province; and the comparative vocabulary, reflect the breadth of intention of the work. It is unsurprising that it "caused a stir" and quickly sold through its print-run of just 900 copies. The History of Java is an almost perfect summation of the East India Company&#39;s ambitions at their most enlightened, and as such is a reflection of its author; "A man of vision, with great ambitions for himself and his country, he saw Britain&#39;s mission to raise the people of the eastern archipelago from ignorance and poverty, not by means of territorial expansion but a combination of commercial and moral pre-eminence: reviving old cultures and spreading European enlightenment through economic progress, liberal education, and the rule of law". Near contemporary armorial bookplate of the Spengler family to the front pastedown of the first volume.

Original watercolour Vue De L&#39;Aiguade De L&#39;Uranie Sur L&#39;ile Vaigou

Paris: circa 1817-, 1822. Watercolour, 190 x 265 mm.; fine, in a period timber frame. Original drawing for an engraving in the Freycinet voyage account. A finely executed sepia watercolour depicting sailors engaged in collecting fresh water in buckets from a stream. Three unclothed men are also shown in the creek washing clothes, whilst others are gathering the water in buckets and then filling wooden barrels. A fully dressed gentleman is standing guard with a rifle. A small dinghy is moored on the beach and the barrels are being transferred by dinghy to a larger ship, probably L&#39;Uranie moored at sea. The lush scene is depicted in exquisite detail and shows a beautiful and idyllic scene on the island of Vaigou, on the north west coast of New Guinea. Lous de Freycinet&#39;s voyage of 1817-1820 in the Uranie to the East Indies, Australia and the Pacific was one of the most important voyages of exploration ever made. This watercolour is the original prepared for the engraved plate number 49 in the Atlas Historique of Freycinet&#39;s monumental publication Voyage Autour Du Monde …published over twenty years from 1824-1844. The engraved plate is titled Vue De L&#39;Aiguade De L&#39;Uranie Sur L&#39;ile Vaigou and states at the lower left that the engraving was based on a drawing by Marchais after a drawing by Alphonse Pellion, one of the two official artists on the expedition. Original voyage art is highly prized and that relating to the early nineteenth century in the Pacific, even more so.
