FIRST EDITION SIGNED. 1 vol., signed by Byron as "Noel Byron" to top of title-page, being the first variant of the second issue with capital L of Lettre directly beneath lui of celui-la on title page and page 67 with the word Eagle (as opposed to Falcon in the second variant), half title present and bound with the notes and the poem A Very Mournful Ballad on the Siege and Conquest of Alhama. Bound in contemporary full tan calf, covers ruled and paneled in gilt and blind, expertly rebacked to style. Accompanied with a letter signed by Dr. Peter Beal of Sotheby's, on Sotheby's letterhead dated 13th December 1991, and relating to Lot 28 in the Sotheby's auction of 12th December 1991, and stating "We are happy to confirm our definite opinion that two of the volumes in this lot were signed by Lord Byron, using the form of his name ("Noel Byron") he adopted after the death of his mother-in-law in January 1822. Byron's signature was subject to variation, depending in part upon the speed with which he wrote, but close comparison with a number of facsimile examples leaves no doubt in our mind that his salient characteristics are present and that there is no indication of forgery".

Bound ca.1890 by Ramage and signed in gilt on the front turn-in. Contained within a cloth slipcase with leather opening.John Ramage was born in London in 1836. When Ramage came out of his apprenticeship in 1856, he took the unusual step for an English binder of going to Paris and working under Lortic, one of the leading French binders of the day. In 1860 Ramage returned to Britain and purchased the Edinburgh business of Alexander Banks Jnr, stating in the 1861 census returns that he employed 8 men, 3 boys, 6 women and 1 girl. Three years later he moved his business to London, where there was more work. He moved to larger premises in Warwick Lane in 1870, and from there he went to Warwick Square and in 1891 to Creed Lane. He died in 1911. One of 250 copies. Printed on wove paper with the watermark \"J Whatman | 1812\", i.e. William Balston (1759-1849), Whatman`s successor.Shelley`s first mature work, which drew from Leigh Hunt, the first public recognition of Shelley`s gifts as \"a very striking and original thinker\". Partly inspired by a boat trip up the Thames taken by Shelley, Mary, Peacock and Charles Clairmont and partly by Shelley`s complex reaction to Wordsworth, the poem, \"in its brooding introspection, is a world away from the explicit radicalism of Queen Mab. Alastor is at some level an elegy for Shelley`s failed marriage with Harriet\" (ODNB). The volume also contains `The Daemon of the World`, a revised version of the first two cantos of `Queen Mab`, along with another revised section (entitled `Superstition`) from canto 6. Among the short poems are \"Mutability,\" \"To Wordsworth,\" and \"A Summer-Evening Church-Yard,\" which was inspired by a visit to Lechlade, a few miles down the road from Kempsford.\"Shelley printed 250 copies of the volume at his own expense at Hamiton`s, and offered the publication to John Murray, who declined it. The book was ultimately published by Carpenter & Son, and Baldwin & Co. (see Shelley`s letter to John Murray, January 16, 1816, and to Carpenter & Son, February 6, 1816. Peacock says that when Shelley was at a loss for a title for his Poem, `I proposed that which he adopted. The Greek word Alástôr is an evil genius, kakodaímôn; though the sense of the two words is somewhat different, it is the Phane s Alástôr ê kakòs daímôn pothén, of Aeschylos. The Poem treated the Spirit of Solitude as a spirit of evil.`\" (Roger Ingpen & Walter E. Peck: The Complete Works of Percy Bysshe Shelley, Volume I, Poems, p. 420.)The book was apparently rare as early as 1824: Mary Shelley, in her preface to Posthumous Poems, explained, \"I have added a reprint of `Alastor, or the Spirit of Solitude`: the difficulty with which a copy can be obtained is the cause of its republication.\" - Erste Ausgabe, eins von nur 250 Exemplaren.         Voyage de Découvertes aux Terres Australes. Sur les corvettes le Géographe, le Naturaliste, et la goélette le Casuarina, pendant les années 1800, 1801, 1802, 1803 et 1804

Imprimerie Impériale, Paris 1816 - Two volumes, quarto, and large quarto atlas in two parts containing 41 full-page engravings, many in original handcolouring, and 14 fine charts; the text volumes uncut; a fine set in modern quarter morocco. First edition: the Baudin-Freycinet expedition, one of the most important early explorations of Australia. This is the rare and important official account of the Baudin voyage to Australia and the Pacific, sent out by the French government in 1800 with orders to complete the cartographic survey of the Australian coast. Commanded by Nicolas Baudin, the expedition left France in 1800 and sailed via Mauritius to the Australian coast in the region of Cape Leeuwin, arriving in May 1801. Péron sailed as naturalist on the expedition and Freycinet as cartographer. The vessels Géographe and Naturaliste sailed north from Cape Leeuwin. The expedition surveyed the coast and made observations on the natural history and inhabitants, until they crossed to Timor. After three months the two ships set out for Tasmania, the party continuing to make detailed surveys, and went on to Sydney. They then undertook a complete survey of the southern coast and an examination of the northern coast before returning to Mauritius where, near the end of 1803, Baudin died. It was a celebrated voyage, which brought back to France the most important collection of natural history specimens in the history of the French Museum, as well as a wealth of geographical and other information. The Atlas Historique contains a series of wonderful coloured plates, some of the most beautiful of early views of Australia and fine natural history images, while the superb series of portraits of Aborigines represents the most compassionate yet honest portrayal of the displaced natives to be seen in any of the early voyage accounts. These exceptional illustrations are mostly by the remarkable artist Charles-Alexandre Lesueur: "Lesueur's scientific work runs parallel to artistic work of great importance. He was at one and the same time draughtsman and painter, naturalist and landscape artist. His talent was recognised in France in his own lifetime, by the award? of the silver medal of the Société des Beaux-Arts?" (Baudin in Australian Waters, p. 26).The narrative of the expedition was begun by Péron, and completed by Freycinet after Péron's death. A tacit agreement between Péron and Freycinet, both of whom disliked Baudin, kept the commander's name mostly absent from the account of the expedition. The French and English had completed their circumnavigations of the Australian continent at approximately the same time, but Flinders' imprisonment by the French on Mauritius meant that it was this French account which contained the first complete and detailed chart of the Australian continent to appear in print, one of the most beautiful, as well as one of the most famous of all maps of Australia. It also had immense geo-political significance with virtually the entire southern coast of Australia labelled "Terre Napoléon", indicating French colonial ambitions. Controversial even today, the map is often said to have been at least partly based on Flinders's charts and papers seized by the French. Much of the Baudin coastal exploration was commemorated by the numerous place-names along the Australian coast, especially in Tasmania and Western Australia. This set takes the form in which the book is usually seen, comprising the full narrative account and the Atlas Historique with its superb coloured plates. The important Atlas Hydrographique with accompanying text volume were separately published and distributed by a different bookseller: they are only very rarely found accompanying the official narrative. Small tear to the Australian map. [Attributes: First Edition]

The Londsdale copy of the most important printed atlas of the Americas of its time, containing foundation wall maps of the region by the greatest British cartographer of his generation. The atlas is accompanied by a lovely first edition set of the text of Thompson?Äôs translation and expansion of Alcedo?Äôs classic work on the Americas.?ÄúAaron Arrowsmith, Hydrographer to the King of England and Geographer to the Prince of Wales, was the most influential and espected map publisher of the first quarter of the nineteenth century. His role in cartographic production was to gather the best information available from a wide variety of sources, weigh the relative merits of conflicting data, and compile from this the most accurate depiction possible of an area. Arrowsmith accomplished this synthesis better than any other commercial map maker of his day and, as a result, his maps were the most sought after and highly prized on three continents?Äù (Martin and Martin).Arrowsmith specialized in large multi-sheet maps. These were generally separately issued and are now very scarce. His five great wall maps of the Americas were particularly well received and became ?Äúfoundation or prototype maps of the area and were extensively copied by other publishers?Äù (Tooley). These five wall maps were of North America (first published in 1795), the United States (1796), the West Indies (1803), Mexico (1810), and South America (1810). They were generally republished many times, as new information became available. Thomas Jefferson considered the 1803 edition the best map of the continent in print at the time, and it was used extensively in planning Lewis and Clark?Äôs expedition (1805-06). Likewise, the 1814 edition of North America (offered here) was the first map to make use of Lewis and Clark?Äôs map of the same year, and the first to combine Lewis and Clark and Zebulon Pike?Äôs data onto one map.The present atlas is an early version with the following maps:1) A Map Exhibiting all the New Discoveries in the Interior Parts of North America.A. Arrowsmith.January 1st 1795 Additions to 1811 Additions to June 1814. 2) A Map of the United States of America Drawn from a number of Critical Researches By A. Arrowsmith.Jan 1st 1796. His talent was recognised in France in his own lifetime, by the award… of the silver medal of the Société des Beaux-Arts…" (Baudin in Australian Waters, p.

Kl.-4, X, 368 S., 37 S. VI, 454 S., 20 S. VI, 436 S., 8 S., Mit Frontispiz u. 38 Tafeln in Holzstich (meist Tondruck), 2 Faksimiles, 36 teils gefalt. Karten u. Plänen, 5 Notenbeilagen u. zahlr. Bernhard Freiherr von Wüllerstorf-Urbair (1816-1883) österreichischer Vizeadmiral, von 1865 bis 1867 k.k. Handelsminister. Humboldts Kosmos.

Narrative of a Ten Years' Residence at Tripoli in Africa

1816 - (AFRICA) TULLY, Richard. Narrative of a Ten Years' Residence at Tripoli in Africa". Also, An Account of the Domestic Manners of the Moors, Arabs, and Turks. London: Henry Colburn, 1816. Quarto, contemporary three-quarter red morocco gilt, raised bands, marbled boards, endpapers and edges. $2500.First edition of this revealing "insider" account of the Court of the Bashaw of Tripoli, with engraved folding map of the "Regencies of Tripoli and Tunis," and five vibrant hand-colored aquatints of Moorish costume and customs."This work is one of the most important records of Tripolitan life during the 18th century" (Maggs II 2003). Richard Tully was the British Consul at Tripoli from 1783 to 1793. "The closest intimacy subsisted" between Tully's family and the reigning Bashaw, whose "authentic memoirs and anecdotes" are related here in Tully's sister's letters. These letters provide "the only exact account of the private manners and conduct of this African Despot, and detail such scenes and events, such sketches of human weakness and vice, the effects of ambition, avarice, envy, and intrigue, as will scarcely appear credible". In the parts of Africa to which [the letters] refer, the natives neither admit nor even know of innovations, their manners remaining from age to age invariably the same". The volume will be found an object of particular curiosity, from the lively and artless manner in which it lays open the interior of the Court of the Bashaw of Tripoli." Miss Tully's Tripoli was the source Lord Byron used for his description of furniture in Canto III of Don Juan (see Letters V, 346). Tooley 493. See Abbey, Travel 301 (1817 edition). Plate impressions crisp and colors bright, light occasional foxing to margins of text, foxing and faint dampstain to map. A very desirable copy in near-fine condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Lobstein was trained at Strasbourg where he later served for many years as chairman of the first department of pathology. He is well known for his contributions to pathology and his introduction of the terms pathogenesis, arteriosclerosis, and arteriectasia. He also devised a classification of pathological lesions based on the anatomical character of the change rather than its location. In this treatise, he describes a small accessory autonomic ganglion (Lobstein's ganglion) which is a part of the lower thoracic autonomic chain and lies just above the diaphragm. The ganglion, beautifully depicted in Plate VI, is no longer noted as a separate or important entity in modern neurology."         View of the Fair Merchant Yard from East and View of the Fair Cathedral from South.

mid. XIX c. - Pair of engravings (app. 21.5 by 29 cm), contemporary hand colour. The history of the fair in Nizhniy Novgorod spans more than five centuries. From the mid-XVI century it was known as Makaryev Fair and was held annually near Makaryev Monastery in the Nizhniy Novgorod region. Following the destruction of the fair by fire in 1816 it was moved to the Nizhniy Novgorod city. Famous French architect Auguste de Montferrand, best known for constructing St. Isaac's Cathedral and Alexander's Column in Saint Petersburg, was entrusted with designing a fair complex and a cathedral that later became known as Staroyarmarochny. The project was completed in 1822. Gradually, the groundwater eroded the artificial ground on which the cathedral stood and caused numerous cracks in its walls. It was restored by the architect Robert Kileveyn and re-consecrated in 1888. The bell tower standing next to the cathedral was also replaced by a new one constructed in the same design. The fair itself played a major role in the Russian trade and by the mid-XIX century it became a centre of the commerce of the Empire, where merchants would sell up to half of the total production exported outside Russia. It attracted many foreign merchants from India, Iran, and Central Asia making it a place where the East met the West. As a result of the economic instability in Russia in the beginning of XX century the fair business started to stagnate, which eventually led to the closure of the Nizhniy Novgorod Fair in 1929. Nowadays, Spassky Cathedral belongs to one of the few surviving original fair buildings, until the XXI century.

The Busy Body, or Men and Manners. (4 Volumes)

London: J. Johnston, 1816-1818. First edition. Full Morocco. Fine. Scarce full run of satirical periodical from Regency England, with 25 Gillray hand-colored plates. 8vo. 20 by 13 cm. Text a mix of verse, mock letters, articles, apercus. Some of the pieces come off as more straightforward, such as perhaps the theatre reviews, but mostly the pieces are unabashedly tongue-in-cheek. Plush full brown morocco, with gilt ruled borders, raised bands, gilt ornamentation within spine compartments and gilt lettering. Offsetting, and some age toning. Regardless, a beautiful set.

Hindoo Excavations in the Mountain of Ellora, near Arungabad, in the Decan, in Twenty-Four Views. From the Drawings of James Wales, under the direction of Thomas Daniell.

Printed for Thomas and William Daniell, London 1816 - Oblong folio, pp. [42] + additional engraved title-page, 24 aquatint plates, and 8 engraved plans. Original dark grey-brown paper boards. Plates a little spotted and with marginal dampstains appearing from plate XVII on, only just touching the platemark towards the end, letterpress leaves toned, some soiling throughout. Board edges worn and in one place consolidated with glue, the volume rebacked with matching brown cloth, hinges neatly relined. The second edition of these illustrations of the ancient cliff-side cave temples at Ellora - reduced versions of the much larger, hand-coloured plates which had formed the first edition of 1803. This is sometimes considered the sixth part of a larger project by Thomas and his nephew William Daniell, titled Oriental Scenery, though the other parts all have that general title on their title-pages. This is sometimes called a 'quarto edition', being much smaller than the first (in which the leaves are over 50 x 70 cm), though it is closer in size to a demy folio, with leaves around 36 x 27cm. The illustrations in this volume, again unlike the other volumes of Oriental Scenery, which are entirely the Daniells' work, are based on the work of James Wales, 'a Scottish artist based at Bombay and Poona, who with his assistants Robert Mabon and Gangaram Tambat had been producing and commissioning sketches and plans of the temple at Ellora. After Wales's death in 1795 the Daniells adapted his sketches (then in the possession of Wales's patron Sir Charles Malet) for the sixth volume of Oriental Scenery' (ODNB). Abbey Travel II 432.
