During the War of 1812, the fort was held by United States' forces after it was abandoned by British troops in June 1813. On August 15,1814 the British launched a four pronged attack against the fortifications. A well-prepared American defence and an explosion in the North East Bastion destroyed the British chance for success with the loss over 1,000 men. A full scale siege set in and it was broken on September 17 when American troops sortied out of the fort to capture and wreck the British siege batteries.

        Glenarvon

London: Henry Colburn, 1816 - Lady Caroline Lamb's notorious and deliriously written roman à clé, to exact her revenge on Byron for her seduction and abandonment. When our protagonist Calantha encounters Ruthven Glenarvon (i.,e., Byron), her helplessness is described thus: "The eye of the rattle-snake, it has been said, once fixed upon its victim, overpowers it with terror and alarm: the bird, thus charmed, dares not attempt its escape; it sings its last sweet lay; flutters its little pinions in the air, then falls like a shot before its destroyer, unable to fly from his fascination. Calantha bowed, therefore with the rest, pierced to the heart at once by the maddening power that destroys alike the high and low; but she liked not the wily turn of his eye, the contemptuous sneer of his curling lip, the soft passionless tones of his voice . " First edition. 3 vols., 12mo. [ii], 295; [ii], 390; [ii], 322 pp., lacking half-titles. Contemporary half calf and marbled boards, spine of vol. I defective (missing top half); vol II neatly rebacked; endsheets of all three volumes slightly spotted. A good copy, however, with a contemporary provenance: from the libraries of Dowager Lady Vernon, with her signature, dated 1816, on each title page; and Edward Lord Suffield, with his bookplate (both likely acquaintances of Lamb and Byron).         Le Promerops moqueur Male, No. 1 (Mocking Bird)

Paris 1816 - Jacques Barraband’s (1767-1809) engravings of birds are masterpieces of French ornithological illustration. This stunning portrait, Le Promerops moqueur Male, No, 1, measures 20.75" x 13.75" and is in very good condition with light staining and foxing in the margins and cropped margins. This image was done for the distinguished ornithologist Francois Levaillant, who commissioned the artist to illustrate his landmark works on exotic birds, including the lavish and striking "Histoire Naturelle des Promerops". This bird, commonly called the Mocking bird, is expertly hand-colored in deep, rich shades of blue, purple and maroon with patterned tail-feathers and dark crimson beak and legs. Precise lines define and detail each feather and give dimension and depth to this beautiful bird. Mocking birds are well know for their memory and ability to mimic the songs of other birds. The collaboration of Levaillant and Barraband represented a departure from previous ornithological texts in its emphasis on beauty and luxury, with sumptuously colored and flawlessly rendered birds. Apart from their undoubted beauty, Barraband’s engravings display a scientific accuracy that few ornithological artists have matched since. The meticulous hand-colored engravings in Levaillant's publications were unmatched for the delicate modulations of tone and color, fine lines and perfect draftsmanship, making them exceptional in their richness and tonal variation. Each feather is described by dozens of parallel lines, providing remarkable detail and naturalistically textured color. Some of the prints are embellished with touches of gold leaf on the feathers of the cheeks and shoulders of the birds, emphasizing the preciousness of the plates and reproducing the iridescence of the birds’ feathers. The present selection of images represents an opportunity to acquire spectacular engraving by a foremost 19th-century natural history artist.

Playbill for "Pitcairn's Island; a New Romantick Operatick Ballet Spectacle..."

London: C. Lowndes, 1816. Small folio broadside, 29 x 16 cm., clipped at bottom with loss of a line of text referring to the performance of "The Prodigal"; some old tears and a little dusted, but very fine. New Romantick Operatick Ballet Spectacle. Exceptionally rare playbill from the very early "Ballet Spectacle" staged in London in response to the news of the discovery of the remainder of the Bounty mutineers on Pitcairn Island.Amaso Delano's Narrative of Voyages and Travels (Boston, 1817), is traditionally regarded as the first bookform announcement of the discovery of Pitcairn, but it did not actually appear until the following year. In fact, public notices regarding the discovery of the mutineers were published in late 1815. As this playbill and the following item in the catalogue attest, the discovery was quickly seized on by theatrical entrepreneurs: the bill here advertises a performance at the Theatre Royal in Drury Lane, for 25 April 1816. This is, the advertisement notes, the seventh performance of the work (with an eighth and ninth - at least - said to follow). As always with these ephemeral playbills, there is a wealth of tantalising information regarding the actual staging of the 'romantick operatick Ballet Spectacle, (Founded on the recent Discovery of a numerous Colony, formed by, and descended from, the Mutineers of the Bounty Frigate,) called Pitcairn's Island'. Particularly noted are the 'new and selected Musick, new Scenery, Dresses & Embellishments. The Action and Dances composed by, and produced under the direction of, Mr [Oscar] Byrne'.It is interesting to note that the production evidently dates from the earliest reports, because rather than the famous John Adams, for example, the lead role of the "Chief of the Colony" is "Christian" (but it is not clear whether this refers to Fletcher or his son Thursday October). Nor have the names of the islanders been updated; rather, most of the characters evidently borrow from earlier South Seas performances, as the named characters include old favourites like "Otoo" (Mr Coveney), "Ereeco" (Mr Ebsworth), as well as "Otaheina & Oberea, (Sisters, and Grand-Daughters to Christian)" (Miss Johnson & Miss S. Halford).

Plate 13, Helonias Bullata (Swamp Pink)

Paris 1816 - This exquisite, hand colored stipple engraving, “Plate 13, Helonias Bullata” measures 20.5” x 13.5” and is in excellent condition with slightly cropped edges. This fragrant flower, commonly called a Swamp Pink, is the only flower in its genus Helonias. Naturalistically depicted, it is colored with a long stem and dark green leaves with clusters of small purple flowers at the top. The bulb of the flower is also finely detailed showing the roots. Swamp Pinks prefer wetland areas to grow in, without being staurated. Also illustrated on the engraving are records of the anatomical features of this species including the bulb and flowers, so that the flower could be identified with precision and cultivated to perfection. In each illustration, the flowers are classical "portraits" which lack backgrounds or settings. The regal simplicity of the compositions allows the viewer to focus without distraction on the beauty and delicate complexity of the plants themselves. Les Liliacées was Redouté’s largest and most ambitious work and is generally considered his masterpiece, arguably rivaled only by Les Roses. Produced under the patronage of the Empress Josephine, for whom Redouté worked as botanical artist at her estate at Malmaison, these pristine examples represent landmark works in the field of flower illustration. The title Les Liliacées is misleading, as the work was of a much broader scope, including representatives of the lily, amaryllis, iris, orchid, and other families. The plates were executed by means of stipple engraving, a method that the artist himself perfected when he was unsatisfied with the effects garnered by traditional copper-plate engraving. As Redouté shrewdly observed, the delicacy and subtle elegance of his compositions could only be captured using a printing method equally fine. The luminosity of stipple engraving is particularly suited to the reproduction of botanical detail. The medium involved engraving a copper plate with a dense grid of dots that could be modulated to convey delicate gradations of color. Because the ink rested on the paper in miniscule dots, it did not obscure the "light" of the paper beneath the color. After this complicated printing process was complete, the prints were finished by hand in watercolor, so as to conform to the exquisite models Redouté provided.

This image was done for the distinguished ornithologist Francois Levaillant, who commissioned the artist to illustrate his landmark works on exotic birds, including the lavish and striking "Histoire Naturelle des Promerops". This bird is expertly hand-colored in a beautiful shade of dusty pink with a black crown on the forehead. The wings are interestingly colored with a red stripe and blue, black and white patterns down to the wing tips, and white and black tail-feathers. This extraordinary bird is perched on a well detailed branch, allowing the viewer to appreciate the fine lines and color that give this bird great dimension. The collaboration of Levaillant and Barraband represented a departure from previous ornithological texts in its emphasis on beauty and luxury, with sumptuously colored and flawlessly rendered birds.         View of the Fair Merchant Yard from East and View of the Fair Cathedral from South.

mid. XIX c. - Pair of engravings (app. 21.5 by 29 cm), contemporary hand colour. The history of the fair in Nizhniy Novgorod spans more than five centuries. From the mid-XVI century it was known as Makaryev Fair and was held annually near Makaryev Monastery in the Nizhniy Novgorod region. Following the destruction of the fair by fire in 1816 it was moved to the Nizhniy Novgorod city. Famous French architect Auguste de Montferrand, best known for constructing St. Isaac's Cathedral and Alexander's Column in Saint Petersburg, was entrusted with designing a fair complex and a cathedral that later became known as Staroyarmarochny. The project was completed in 1822. Gradually, the groundwater eroded the artificial ground on which the cathedral stood and caused numerous cracks in its walls. It was restored by the architect Robert Kileveyn and re-consecrated in 1888. The bell tower standing next to the cathedral was also replaced by a new one constructed in the same design. The fair itself played a major role in the Russian trade and by the mid-XIX century it became a centre of the commerce of the Empire, where merchants would sell up to half of the total production exported outside Russia. It attracted many foreign merchants from India, Iran, and Central Asia making it a place where the East met the West. As a result of the economic instability in Russia in the beginning of XX century the fair business started to stagnate, which eventually led to the closure of the Nizhniy Novgorod Fair in 1929. Nowadays, Spassky Cathedral belongs to one of the few surviving original fair buildings, until the XXI century.

A collection of ornaments in the antique style. Comprised in XXXVII plates designed & engraved by G. Richardson.

London 1816 - Quarto (37 x 28cm), no text, engraved throughout with decorative title and 36 plates, all aquatint, title very lightly browned, skilfully rebound in half calf gilt preserving original paper-backed boards, slightly worn and rubbed, paper printed label on upper cover. Richardson (1737-1813), architectural draughtsman and designer, worked for the Adam Brothers in Edinburgh. They heavily influenced his design and style. He then set up his own practice but his archtiectural output was small. However his publishing and engraving career, by contrast, was prolific. He produced many patten books which he engraved in aquatint often with help of his son William. His designs were aimed at the "elegant villa" and "small country house" (DNB). This "pattern book" is a good example of Richardson's exquisite taste and elegance of style. Abbey Life 61; DNB; Harris 739; Not in Berlin Kat. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Principles of Population and Production

London - Baldwin, Cradock, and Joy 1816 - A scarcefirst edition of this social commentary which was intednded asa criticism of Malthus' population theory. An important work. Very scarce and a lovely bright copy still in the publishers binding. It upset Malthus so much that he wrote a stinging reply to it for the fifth edition of his 'population'. John Weyland was a magistrate and land-owner. In it, Weyland argues that an increase in population would be beneficial, and that a higher birthrate in the countryside was required in order to compensate for the higher mortality rate in the towns and cities. Rather attractive 19th centurybookplate of Worcester Library to front pastedown. Gilt shelf number to spine (could probably be professionally removed if desired ). Noother markings. Condition: Inpublishers originalcloth binding with paper-covered boards. Externally sound with good patina, though with some staining to the boards, and some wear to the spine. Remarkably good for such a fragile binding type. Internally, generally firmly bound, though slightly strained in places. Pages are bright, with some occasional scattered light spots. Overall: VERY GOOD. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Joseph List, Vienna 1816 - Vienna: Joseph List, 1816-1818. Two copper engraved folding maps with ornamental border frames, dissected and linen backed. The first one on four sheets, each ca. 56x69 cm (22x27 cm), with the total size ca. 111,5x137,5 cm (44x 54 ¼ in); the second map ca. 56x68,5 cm (22x27 cm). Worldcat finds only six copies of the first map and four copies of the second map. The first map is supplemented with four inserts including two profiles of the European mountainous areas from Hamburg to Genoa (Italy) and from Memel to Odessa; a table of heights of the main mountain ranges; a table of latitudes and longitudes of the major European cities; general overview map of Europe, and a detailed explanatory text.         Memoirs of My Own Times, Volume II

Philadelphia: Abraham Small. 1816. First. First edition. Volume Two only. Fair in original paper covered boards with spine nearly perished, spine lable present but chipped/cracked, front and rear endpapers detached but present, both boards detached. This is second book of the vast, defensive, three volume memoir by one of the most senior and controversial officers in Continental Army/United States Army. He has been characterized by the historian Robert Leckie as a general who "had never won a battle or lost a court-martial" and this volume catalogues several of his vindications in the face of charges that he abused his power or was negligent. He both held high offices and was tarnished by his intriques: he was the most senior officer in the US Army after Washington and Hamilton and was first governor of the Louisiana Territory, yet he resigned his first commission due to corruption charges, was later proved to have been in secret negotiations with the Spanish to set up a fief of his own in Kentucky, was suspected of conspiracy with Aaron Burr to set up an independent nation in the West, and was court-martialed by James Madison, which is the concern of the first chapter of the book . .

In Senate of the United States. December 4, 1816. Mr. Morrow, from the committee appointed to inquire whether any, and if any, what, Legislative measures may be necessary for admitting the State of Indiana into the Union or for extending the laws of the United States to that state, report

[Washington, D.C.]: [William A. Davis, Printer], 1816. First edition. Removed. A very good copy, War Department Library stamp on first page. 8vo. Jeremiah Morrow (1771-1852), later Governor of Ohio, was on the committee considering the act for admitting Indiana; the document is the certified Census of the Indiana Territory, by counties, totalling 63,897. "Until 1763 Indiana formed part of the French colonial empire, after which it spent twenty years under nominal British control. George Rogers Clark captured Vincennes in 1778, and in 1787 it became part of the Northwest Territory. In 1800 Indiana Territory was created, with William Henry Harrison as governor. Settlement was slow, primarily due to persistent Indian troubles. The United States did not truly bring the area under control until the War of 1812. In the meantime, Michigan Territory and Illinois Territory had been carved from Indiana. After the war colonization began to speed up, and the population report, showing 60,000 inhabitants, induced Congress to grant statehood to Indiana on December 11, 1816, as the nineteenth state," Jenkins. (1976). OCLC locates five copies under two accession numbers: Yale, Univ. Cincinnati, Indiana Hist. Soc. (oclc 34308405), Huntington Lib. and Univ. Penn. (oclc 81751049). Shaw & Shoemaker 39456.         Extracts from the Religious Works of M. Francois de la Mothe Feneon

London: Printed for J. Hatchard, 1816. Third edition. A striking contemporary full gilt calf binding (dated 1821 in inscription) with large embroidered cloth panels on both covers and specially bound from the shawl of Lady Liverpool (1767-1821), who married Robert Banks Jenkinson and went on to be the Prime Minister 1812-1827 with a lengthy inscriptioin on front fly: "Julian Probyn. Milford. July, 1821. Given me in remembrance of dearsst Lady iverpool and bound in her shawl." Juliana Probyn (also known as May Probyn) was an Engish poet. The book is dedicated in the text by Marshall to Lady LIverpool. A wonderful and intimate association and an even lovelier hadcrafted embroidered biding. Slight wear, esp. on corners, but well-preserved and a striking historical link to an important figure in Great Britain, to say the least.

Magazin Fur Die Neueste Geschichte Der Evangelischen Missions Und Bibelgesellschasten, 1816-1839, 24 Banden

Missions Institute Zu Basel, Basel 1816 - This is a run of 24 volumes of this missionary journal from 1816 through 1839. Bound in 1800's marbled boards and spines. All the volumes are tightly bound with well attached covers. The books have generally very good, unworn edges, with a little rubbing to the spines. The front inner covers have library bookplates with withdrawn stamps. Deaccessioned from a theological seminary, the books show very little handling. 4 volumes have heavy foxing to the pages and maps and illustrations, with one volume having a light waterstain to the lower edge of some pages, but most of the books have very clean and crisp pages. Only one book doesn't contain any maps or illustrations, with the other 23 books containing at least one or two maps each, with an occasional illustration. I noticed one volume that was missing one of the monthly parts at the back that dealt with foreign correspondence. The books measure about 4-1/2 inches by 7-5/8 inches (about 115mm by 195mm). The pages' edges are all trimmed and are dyed red. This set will be expensive to mail from the U.S., so please inquire for shippping rates. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall [Attributes: Hard Cover]
