Angelo's Infantry Sword Exercise; Established by the Prince Regent's Command

By Authority, W. Clowes, 1816. The Figures by I. [J.] A. Atkinson, Engraved by I. Robinson, with hand-colour. Large broadside, 31" x 21". Highly attractive instructional single-sheet. Along the top are a series of figures showing the "Preparatory Movements" or postures, beneath is a large circular "target" with the directions of the seven cuts and guards together with the words of command for the Infantry Sword Exercise. The figures are by John Augustus Atkinson who was noted for his "spirited and lifelike" figure-drawing; "His figures, artistically arrested in movement, show rather an actor's sensibility than a draughtsman's skill. " [DNB] Here he shows a range of contemporary infantry uniforms including the Rifle Brigade and a Highlander. Angelo's Fencing Academy was established in 1759 by Domenico Angelo Malevolti Tremamondo who had first established himself in London as a riding master. Angelo, as he became known, set up a highly fashionable "?cole d'escrime" in Soho which enjoyed the patronage of the Prince of Wales and the Duke of Devonshire. Such was his perceived authority in the area of the art of the fence that the plates of his L'?cole d'Armes were reproduced in the Encyclop?die illustrative of the section on "Escrime." Angelo's eldest son Henry, who had put the final polish on his fencing skills studying in Paris under Motet, became virtual head of his father's acad?mie around 1785 and continued its reputation as "not only a school-of-arms, [but as] a school of deportment as well" [Aylward, The House of Angelo, p. 38.] In turn Henry's son, also named Henry, inherited the business when his father "retired from ther active conduct of the school" in 1817 [DNB].The present item is dedicated "To Field Marshal His Royal Highness, The Duke of York. by Henry Angelo Junr." who we must presume to be the latter Henry despite the dating to 1816. At this stage in the history of the House of Angelo it was probably unnecessary for him to seek patronage with a well-placed dedication, and in 1833 he was appointed Superintendent of Sword Exercise in the Army. However, it does appears that this was based entirely on personal merit, his method being such that "even the soldiers themselves are anxious to learn it" [Aylward, p. 190]. A wonderful survival of the Angelo dynasty, a school-of-arms that became, "in the end, nothing less than a British Institution" [ibid. p. 183].

Memoirs of the Late Thomas Holcroft Written By Himself and Continued to the Time of His Death [by WILLIAM HAZLITT] From His Diary, Notes and Other Papers

London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme and Brown, 1816. First edition. Engraved portrait frontispiece after John Opie. viii,300; [iv], 283; [iv], 320 pp. 3 vols. 12mo. Bound in contemporary half brown morocco and marbled boards, marbled endpapers and edges. Joints are slightly rubbed, but a very attractive copy, overall; with the bookplate of St. Johnsonsbury Athenaeum in each volume, and the library's embossed stamp on title pages. Edited by Hazlitt Holcroft's classic autobiography, left unfinished upon his death in 1809, but completed by William Hazlitt using Holcroft's letters, diaries, and other papers. Although his other works are now largely forgotten, the MEMOIRS "helped found the nineteenth-century genre of working-class autobiography. Republished and annotated several times until 1925, it established Holcroft in liberal literary and political culture as an 'author sprung from the people' (Mitford, vol. 1, chap. 7), exemplifying the liberal ideology of the sovereign subject and public-spirited citizen" (ODNB).

Le Tamatia, a gorge rousse, No. 44

Paris 1816 - Jacques Barraband’s (1767-1809) engravings of birds are masterpieces of French ornithological illustration. This stunning portrait, Le Tamatia, a gorge rousse, No. 44, measures 22.5" x 16.25" and is in excellent condition with slightly cropped margins. This image was done for the distinguished ornithologist Francois Levaillant, who commissioned the artist to illustrate his landmark works on exotic birds, including the lavish and striking "Histoire Naturelle des Promerops". This bird is expertly hand-colored with and orange face and neck, brown body and beak and blue accents on the wings. Precise lines define and detail each feather on its body, giving this small bird great dimension as it perches on the branch. The collaboration of Levaillant and Barraband represented a departure from previous ornithological texts in its emphasis on beauty and luxury, with sumptuously colored and flawlessly rendered birds. Apart from their undoubted beauty, Barraband’s engravings display a scientific accuracy that few ornithological artists have matched since. The meticulous hand-colored engravings in Levaillant's publications were unmatched for the delicate modulations of tone and color, fine lines and perfect draftsmanship, making them exceptional in their richness and tonal variation. Each feather is described by dozens of parallel lines, providing remarkable detail and naturalistically textured color. Some of the prints are embellished with touches of gold leaf on the feathers of the cheeks and shoulders of the birds, emphasizing the preciousness of the plates and reproducing the iridescence of the birds’ feathers.

The Naval Achievements of Great Britain

1816. JENKINS, James. The Naval Achievements of Great Britain from the Year 1793 to 1817. [6], viii, [148] pp. Illustrated with an engraved title-page, 55 hand-coloured aquatint plates and one black and white engraving by T. Whitcombe, engraved by Sutherland. Small folio, 343 x 280 mm, bound in English near-contemporary ¾ blue morocco over marbled boards, intricate gilt-tooled spine, a.e.g. Preserved in blue cloth folding box. London: J. Jenkins, [1816-17]. First Edition with the title vignette uncoloured indicating the early state. A fresh copy of Jenkins' Naval Achivements with 55 superbly-coloured aquatint plates after T. Witcombe, with the earliest Whatman watermarks (1812-1816). The coloured aquatints depict striking, action-filled scenes from Britain's Naval campaigns during the Napoleonic Wars. They are accompanied by Jenkins' comments plus letters describing first-hand accounts of the battles, along with detailed statistics on the ships, the officers on board and the casualties incurred. Includes the Battle of the Nile, The Battle of Trafalgar, the Bombardment of Algiers and many others. "As a record of naval events spanning a period of over twenty years Jenkins' Naval Achievements has no precedent. At no time prior to 1817 had a publisher attempted such a complete volume of documentary naval prints. It is the quality of the accuracy which makes Jenkins so valuable above all, and it is the pictures rather than the text to which the value can be attributed" (Roger Quarm, Curator of Pictures, National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, England). Due to the market tendency to fragment and sell these popular coloured illustrations as separate prints, complete copies of Jenkins Naval Achievements in any state are hard to come by. The plates in this copy are all free from spotting, with fresh and vibrant colouring. Volume rebacked with the original spine laid down, inner hinges reinforced. PROVENANCE: Sir Henry Beresford-Peirse, Bart. of Bedale Yorkshire with his ex-libris. Abbey, Life 337. Tooley 282.
