Memoirs of My Own Times, Volume II

Philadelphia: Abraham Small. 1816. First. First edition. Volume Two only. Fair in original paper covered boards with spine nearly perished, spine lable present but chipped/cracked, front and rear endpapers detached but present, both boards detached. This is second book of the vast, defensive, three volume memoir by one of the most senior and controversial officers in Continental Army/United States Army. He has been characterized by the historian Robert Leckie as a general who "had never won a battle or lost a court-martial" and this volume catalogues several of his vindications in the face of charges that he abused his power or was negligent. He both held high offices and was tarnished by his intriques: he was the most senior officer in the US Army after Washington and Hamilton and was first governor of the Louisiana Territory, yet he resigned his first commission due to corruption charges, was later proved to have been in secret negotiations with the Spanish to set up a fief of his own in Kentucky, was suspected of conspiracy with Aaron Burr to set up an independent nation in the West, and was court-martialed by James Madison, which is the concern of the first chapter of the book . .

In Senate of the United States. December 4, 1816. Mr. Morrow, from the committee appointed to inquire whether any, and if any, what, Legislative measures may be necessary for admitting the State of Indiana into the Union or for extending the laws of the United States to that state, report

[Washington, D.C.]: [William A. Davis, Printer], 1816. First edition. Removed. A very good copy, War Department Library stamp on first page. 8vo. Jeremiah Morrow (1771-1852), later Governor of Ohio, was on the committee considering the act for admitting Indiana; the document is the certified Census of the Indiana Territory, by counties, totalling 63,897. "Until 1763 Indiana formed part of the French colonial empire, after which it spent twenty years under nominal British control. George Rogers Clark captured Vincennes in 1778, and in 1787 it became part of the Northwest Territory. In 1800 Indiana Territory was created, with William Henry Harrison as governor. Settlement was slow, primarily due to persistent Indian troubles. The United States did not truly bring the area under control until the War of 1812. In the meantime, Michigan Territory and Illinois Territory had been carved from Indiana. After the war colonization began to speed up, and the population report, showing 60,000 inhabitants, induced Congress to grant statehood to Indiana on December 11, 1816, as the nineteenth state," Jenkins. (1976). OCLC locates five copies under two accession numbers: Yale, Univ. Cincinnati, Indiana Hist. Soc. (oclc 34308405), Huntington Lib. and Univ. Penn. (oclc 81751049). Shaw & Shoemaker 39456.         Le Guepier a collier gros-bleu males, No 7 (European Bee-Eater)

Paris, 1816 Jacques Barraband?s (1767-1809) engravings of birds are masterpieces of French ornithological illustration. This stunning portrait, Le Guepier a collier gros-bleu males, No. 7, measures 20.75" x 13.75" and is in excellent condition with cropped margins. This image was done for the distinguished ornithologist Francois Levaillant, who commissioned the artist to illustrate his landmark works on exotic birds, including the lavish and striking "Histoire Naturelle des Promerops". This bird, commonly called a European Bee-Eater, is expertly hand-colored with multiple rich and vibrant colors. A green-blue back is seen with reddish tail-feathers and chest, blue collar and golden yellow neck. Precise lines define and detail this bird as it delicately perches on the branch. The collaboration of Levaillant and Barraband represented a departure from previous ornithological texts in its emphasis on beauty and luxury, with sumptuously colored and flawlessly rendered birds. Apart from their undoubted beauty, Barraband?s engravings display a scientific accuracy that few ornithological artists have matched since. The meticulous hand-colored engravings in Levaillant's publications were unmatched for the delicate modulations of tone and color, fine lines and perfect draftsmanship, making them exceptional in their richness and tonal variation. Each feather is described by dozens of parallel lines, providing remarkable detail and naturalistically textured color. Some of the prints are embellished with touches of gold leaf on the feathers of the cheeks and shoulders of the birds, emphasizing the preciousness of the plates and reproducing the iridescence of the birds? feathers.         Napoleon's Mounted Chasseurs on a Campaign

1816. Two oil paintings on canvas; approximately 10 x 13 inches or 25 x 32 cm. In contemporary wood gilt frames, with a label pasted onto the back of each canvas dated 1816 and signed, "C. M". These unidentified works depict French cavalry officers -- Napoleon's mounted Chasseurs of the Imperial Guard or mounted Red Lancers -- on one of the 1812-14 Napoleonic campaigns across Europe. One depicts the mounted officers in the foreground bringing up the rear of a column of soldiers advancing with a covered wagon crossing over a stone bridge in a European valley at dawn. The other depicts the same column of soldiers and wagons at rest along a river in front of a stone building, with the mounted officers in the foreground overlooking the scene. There is moderate soiling to the canvas and frame, which can easily be cleaned; else fine with no visible cracks to the pigments. A very fine pair of paintings in the manner of Hippolyte Lecomte (1781-1857), who painted many similar scenes of the Napoleonic wars, and also of Louis Lejeune (1775-1848); Charles Thevenin (1764-1838); and Nicolas Antoine Taunay (1755-1838). .

AN AFFECTING NARRATIVE OF THE CAPTIVITY & SUFFERINGS OF MRS. MARY SMITH, WHO, WITH HER HUSBAND AND THREE DAUGHTERS WERE TAKEN PRISONERS BY THE INDIANS IN AUGUST LAST (1814) AND.WAS FORTUNATELY RESCUED FROM THE MERCILESS HANDS OF SAVAGES BY A DETACHED PARTY OF THE ARMY OF THE BRAVE GENERAL JACKSON, LATE COMMANDING AT NEW- ORLEANS.

Providence: Printed for L. Scott, [1816?]. - 24pp. Lacks folding frontispiece (provided in photostatic facsimile). Modern three-quarter brown morocco and cloth, spine gilt. Bookplate of Frank Cutter Deering on front pastedown. Text tanned and lightly foxed. Good plus. Mrs. Smith and her family were taken captive by the Chickasaws near the Yazoo in 1814. Her husband was used for tomahawk throwing practice and her three daughters were burned in front of her. She was saved from a similar fate by the raid of a company of Tennessee troops. This captivity tale was first published in Providence in 1815. The narrative was apparently a bestseller for its day, as at least seven editions appeared by 1818, all of which are rare today. The printer, Scott, produced several twenty-four-page and thirty-two-page editions with a new woodcut frontispiece and variant titlepages; some include the text about the murder of thirty people after Mrs. Smith escaped. The present edition was printed after Jackson's defeat of the British at the Battle of New Orleans on Jan. 8, 1815, as reflected in the title. Rare. Not in Ayer. HOWES S638, "b." SABIN 83539.

The History of the Colleges of Winchester, Eton, and Westminster; with the Charter-House, the School of St. Paul’s, Merchant Taylors, Harrow, and Rugby, and the Free-School of Christ’s Hospital

      R. Ackermann, London 1816 - Folio-sized. 34.5 by 28 cm. 48 hand-colored plates, 44 of which are views, four, costume. Pagination is separate for each of the schools: vi (including list of subscribers), 56, 72, 40, 32, 43, 34, 34, 27, 22, [1] pp. The greatest number of plates are devoted to Eton and Winchester, which get ten each, with the other schools genreally receiving five each. The plates capture the architectural glory of these institutions, as well as the romance that had already gathered around them, with nary an acknowledgment of the underside of their strict and spartan regime. Scattered foxing, heavy at times, but most leaves and plates are in fact clean. Sometimes heavy offsetting from the plates onto the facing pages. Full contemporary calf with gothic architectural motive and border decoration blindstamped. Rebacking, with original spine preserved and laid on. Some small chips and scuffs to the leather.         Le Guepier a long-brins Male, No. 4 (Rainbow Bee-Eater)

Paris 1816 - Jacques Barraband’s (1767-1809) engravings of birds are masterpieces of French ornithological illustration. This stunning portrait, Le Guepier a long-brins Male, No. 4, measures 21.5" x 13.5" and is in very good condition with light wrinkling, faint staining and cropped margins. This image was done for the distinguished ornithologist Francois Levaillant, who commissioned the artist to illustrate his landmark works on exotic birds, including the lavish and striking "Histoire Naturelle des Promerops". This bird, commonly known as a Rainbow Bee-Eater is expertly hand-colored in vibrant shades. The body of this bird is green with a vibrant blue lower back leading to dark, extended tail-feathers. Its wings, neck and throat are accented with tan, blue and black stripes. Precise lines define and detail each feather and give definition and dimension to this colorful bird. The collaboration of Levaillant and Barraband represented a departure from previous ornithological texts in its emphasis on beauty and luxury, with sumptuously colored and flawlessly rendered birds. Apart from their undoubted beauty, Barraband’s engravings display a scientific accuracy that few ornithological artists have matched since. Some of the prints are embellished with touches of gold leaf on the feathers of the cheeks and shoulders of the birds, emphasizing the preciousness of the plates and reproducing the iridescence of the birds’ feathers. The present selection of images represents an opportunity to acquire spectacular engraving by a foremost 19th-century natural history artist.
