      En Palacio" [i.e., Madrid] Folio (29.8 cm, 12.75"), 4 pp.. 1 March 1815 The king aids a widow. On 11 February 1815 the king conceded Doña María Josefa d'Alouise, widow of Don Juan Carlos Benavides, the power to attempt recovery of 8356 reales and 6 maravides de velón of annual income from her late husband's entailed estate (i.e., mayorazgo). He here expands his earlier decree and orders the current holder of the entail to give the said sum annually to her, provided she does not remarry or take religious vows. Written in a very clear hand, with the paper and wax seal below the king's signature (wax desicated and paper loose, but present). Two blank leaves at end. Very good condition.

Prunetti's @Saggio pittorico . was originally published in Rome, 1786, with a second edition following in 1818 and a third in 1922.The first half of the book includes the detailed rules of artistic composition, color selection, and technique advocated by Prunetti; brief biographies of European painters of the thirteenth through the eighteenth centuries, arranged by school; and a summary of important paintings to be found in Roman churches and palaces. The second half of the book (pp. 141-258) consists of Taborda's @Memoria dos mais famosos pintores portuguezes. The 96 biographical entries - some extending to several pages in length - begin with the early fifteenth-century painter Álvaro de Pedro and continue chronologically to the early nineteenth century. Taborda provides a wealth of biographical information, much of it taken from archival sources, often with precise volume and page references. This is supplemented by notes of works painted (with their locations at the time) and buildings decorated. Many of the artists were women. Appended is a useful glossary of Portuguese art terms.José da Cunha Taborda (1766-1836) studied painting and architecture in Lisbon and Rome, returning to Lisbon in 1796 as professor of the newly established painting school. Appointed @pintor régio in 1803, with an annual pension of 700.000 @réis, Taborda's work adorns the Real Palácio da Ajuda. Taborda also translated a story from Boccaccio's @Decameron, published under the title @Nathan e Mitridates by the Impressão Regia in 1816.The title page vignette was drawn by Taborda and engraved by Domingos José da Silva.       - Blatt- und Bildgröße 34 : 47 cm. Für die Uraufführung von E. T. A. Hoffmanns Oper ?Undine? auf ein Libretto von Fouqué entwarf Schinkel 1815-16 sieben Dekorationen. In Schinkels ?Sammlung von Theater-Decorationen? wurde ?Burg Ringstädten? als einzige veröffentlicht (Heft I, 1819, Bl. 2). Dieses Bühnenbild lag Hoffmann besonders am Herzen. Er gab eine genaue Szenenanweisung,der Schinkel bis auf architektonische Details gefolgt ist. Das vorliegende Blatt entspricht der Vorlage in Größe, Details und der blaßblauen Farbgebung sehr genau. Adolph Doebber wurde um 1848 in Magdeburg geboren, wirkte als Intendentatur- und Baurat in Weimar und ist 1916 außer Dienst in Berlin-Charlottenburg nachweisbar. Seit 1908 veröffentlichte er Bücher und Aufsätze zur Architektur- und Theatergeschichte der deutschen Klassik und Romantik. - Harten, Die Bühnenentwürfe (K. F. Schinkel. Prima edizione del primo libro di giochi di prestigio pubblicato in Italia, vero e proprio manuale di giochi con i dadi e le carte, indovinelli matematici, prestidigitazione, magia. Il testo è ampiamente illustrato che raffigurano e spiegano i trucchi e si aggiungono alle molte tabelle nel testo. "Contains arithmetical puzzles, tricks with cards and dice, problems relating to the theory of numbers, sleight of hand, etc." (Honeyman). L'autore (1712 - 1768), architetto e agronomo a Bagnacavallo, è noto soprattutto per questo trattato che riscosse un grandissimo successo ed ebbe nove ristampe fino al 1815. Caillet I, 145: "Rare". Honeyman 47. Poggendorff I, col. 23. Riccardi I, p. 15: "oltre i giuochi numerici contiene ancora dilettevoli giuochi di prestigio".

        Six Drawings of Sporting Notions

      London, 1815-1830. Half Calf. Paper pastedown on boards. . Fine. A handsome modern binding of six original Alken drawings. Elephantine oblong, 35 by 50 cm. The drawings themselves are laid in a heavy board frame within the binding, and this frame has a window of 19 by 26 cm. The drawings themselves are laid on paper, and this paper is exposed, creating a margin all around, of about 1 cm. The drawings are titled: "I have a notion that I am not quite up to this riding in Surry [sic]", "A gad I had no notion that picking up a fox was such sharp work", "I have a strong notion that this is a coal hole", "I have a very strong notion I should not like stag hunting", "I have a strong notion that this bit of timber will impede my progress excessively", and "I have a notion that this may be called riding to the hounds at a smashing pace". All the drawings relate to foxhunting and its perils and sources of anxiety. The drawings served as the basis for some of the plates in one of the rarest of Alken's color plate books, "Sporting Notions", which was published in 1833 (with plates watermarked 1831 to 1833). Humor, along with a touch of pathos, pervades the artwork. The modern binding is handsome and worthy of the contents. Leather title label on front board.

      Burlington, N.J.: printed by John S. Meehan, 1815. First edition, 12mo, 16 & unpaginated lexicon in double column, a nice copy in full orig. sheep, wavy blindstamped fillets on spine. In the advertisement on the verso of the title, the author hopes for the need of an unabridged version of the same work, but as the dictionary "made little contribution to the development of lexicography in America," no other edition was published. Allison (1753-1827) was a member of the American Philosophical Society and was long one of its secretaries. Shaw & Shoemaker 33832; Burkett, p. 55ff.; Kennedy 6360.

L'ultimo volume è interamente occupato dagli indici. Si tratta di una delle almeno tre edizioni apparse contemporaneamente in traduzione italiana nel 1815, quindi da considerarsi originale. Celebre commentario ad una delle opere giuridiche più significative dell'800. Non comune e ricercato.

The drawings themselves are laid in a heavy board frame within the binding, and this frame has a window of 25 by 36 cm. The drawings themselves are laid on paper, and this paper is exposed, creating a margin all around, of not quite 2 cm. The drawings are titled: "Swell and the Surrey, No. 1", "Swell and the Surrey No. 2", "Drawing the Long Bow", "Drawing a Horse", "A Cabbage Leaf Galloper", "In Such a Scene as This", and "Rider Unshipped". Most relate to riding and equestrian sports, but "Drawing the Long Bow" depicts men drinking and playing cards. Generally the scenes have a touch of humor and levity, although one can not say they are all caricature or intended to be funny. While one can find some sketchiness here and there, overall the drawings come off as satisfying works that can stand on their own -- in other words, they are closer to being finished than tentative works in progress. Bringing coherence to the group is an esprit of quintessential Alken. The modern binding is handsome and worthy of the contents. Leather title label on front board.

Prima edizione, pubblicata postuma e condotta sul codice originale del Barberino, di questa vivace opera che descrive in prosa e in versi quale fosse la condizione femminile nel ‘300. L’edizione è dedicata dal curatore, Guglielmo Manzi, alla famosa poetessa Vittoria Colonna principessa Barberini ed è preceduta dalla vita dell’A. scritta da Federico Ubaldini.

      Didot, 1815. in - folio (490x340), pp. 14, (16), raffinata legatura dell'epoca in marocchino rosso, piatti adorni di bella bordura romantica a volute, grotteschi e fogliami in oro, al piatto anteriore stemma sabaudo centrale, sempre in oro. Stupenda serie di 7 superbe vedute f.t. incise all'acquatinta: Cascade de Nant d'Arpenas, Mont - Blanc prise de St. Martin, Lac de Chède, Glacier de Bois et de la source de l'Arveiron, Mont Blanc prise du Couvercle, Mer de Glace prise du Montanvert, Vue prise de la Flégère. Il testo si compone di 14 pp. preliminari, "Tableau de la Vallée de Chamouni", e da due pagine caduna di testo descrittivo della planche che è rilegata a fronte (la prima tavola è a fronte del frontespizio). Prima ed unica edizione. Stupende, dettagliatissime vedute del Monte Bianco, opera dei più raffinati paesaggisti svizzeri del primo Ottocento, i Lory padre e figlio (1763 - 1840 e 1784 - 1846). Le 7 magnifiche vedute incise all'acquatinta sono in quest'esemplare impresse in nero, o meglio, in scala di grigi, l'effetto grafico è raffinatissimo, e permette di notare l'eccezionale tecnica incisoria dei chiaro - scuri. Al contropiatto ex - libris di Tommaso di Savoia Duca di Genova, nipote di Carlo Alberto (1748 - 1849), per il quale l'esemplare fu rilegato da Felice Albinolo, "Legatore da Libri di S. A. S. il Sig. Principe di Carignano", che fu tra i più raffinati legatori piemontesi, che lavorò per per lui sin dalla reggenza e poi tra gli altri per i Caissotti di Chiusano. La Biblioteca di Carlo Alberto era stata costituita da Cesare Saluzzo di Monesiglio (1778 - 1853) che la destinò a Ferdinando (1822 - 1855), suo secondogenito e primo Duca di Genova, passando poi a Tommaso di Savoia. Straordinario esemplare su carta grande, in barbe, (minime arrossature della carta nei fogli di testo), le tavole stampate su carta distinta, di formato inferiore a quello del testo, sono freschissime.

Il primo è stato pubblicato nel 1815 e l'ultimo postumo nel 1878. Il volume finale è considerato apocrifo da alcuni storici dell'arte. Volume contiene 34 soggetti, per lo più a duplice pagina nera, grigia e carne. piatto superiore distaccato. cuciture fragili. fisarmonica Volume, collegati da una cucitura. giallo ocra coperta a quadri con tag titolo. Buona copia. La varietà Hokusai manga di soggetti, scene di vita quotidiana, ma anche scene di battaglia, anche scene di leggende tipicamente giapponesi, animali e fiori. "E 'generalmente considerato che, dopo un intenso periodo di produzione, Hokusai sélectionna molto attentamente i suoi schizzi, e anche ridisegnato un numero, disponendole secondo l'ordine che conosciamo oggi. Tuttavia, Michener sostiene che l'impostazione pagina in diversi schizzi su un dato bordo è stato effettivamente deciso dagli scrittori ed editori, non da Hokusai se stesso ". Wikipedia. Les hokusaï manga traitent de sujets variés, des scènes de la vie quotidiennes, mais aussi des scènes guerrières, également des scènes de légendes typiquement japonaises, des animaux et des fleurs. "On considère en général que, après une période de production intense, Hokusai sélectionna très soigneusement ses croquis, et en redessina même un certain nombre, en les disposant selon l'ordre que nous connaissons aujourd'hui. Cependant, Michener soutient que la mise en page des différents croquis sur une planche donnée a été en réalité décidée par les graveurs et les éditeurs, et non par Hokusai lui - même." Wikipedia. On rappellera que la technique de l'estampe japonaise est très proche du dessin original, puisqu'on apposait le dessin à l'encre sur un pièce de bois que le graveur creusait, suivant précisément les lignes du dessin, lui - même détruit par cette opération. Landriani fu architetto e scenografo al Teatro alla Scala di Milano dal 1792 fino alla morte. Innovativa fu la sua critica nei confronti della scenografia barocca, auspicando egli un sistema di regole neoclassiche per la decorazione delle scene. Oltre ai 2 bellissimi frontespizi architettonici impressi all'acquatinta di seppia, l'opera è adorna di 10 tavole incise e più volte ripieg. f.t., di piante e spaccati. La sua rara opera analizza dettagliatamente il palco, il proscenio, le scene, le quinte, le prospettive, i chiaroscuri.. Alcuni anni dopo fu corredata di altre due appendici. Bellissimo esemplare, con timbro di stamperia sull'occhietto.

L'auteur, un des conseillers de Napoléon durant dix années, cherche dans cet ouvrage à dresser le portrait véritable de l'empereur, à scruter, derrière l'apparence des choses les véritables motivations et le véritable caractère de Napoléon Bonaparte. L'auteur démasque les fausses légendes, comprenant que la prodigieuse faculté de tout embrasser à son revers, celui de ne rien approfondir ; portrait d'un homme dont l'obsession et le désir principal étaient de soumettre le monde à sa domination, qui discourait incessamment pour séduire et captiver son entourage, et dont les hommes n'étaient jamais pour lui que serviteurs à sa cause. Ce portrait au vitriol, réfléchi, véritable travail d'écrivain, ne verse nullement dans la complaisance et la critique facile. Dominique de Pradt fut accusé par l'empereur de lui avoir fait manqué l'Europe lors de l'ambassade de Pologne, qui devait être le dernier rempart avant la chute de la Russie. De plus, l'ouvrage a le mérite de découvrir des points d'histoire ignorés, dans sa volonté de déterminer le système et les pensées de Napoléon, notamment d'exclure l'Angleterre de l'Europe et de confiner la Russie à sa position septentrionale.

Questi forni' anche una serie di aggiunte derivate da esperienze successive all'edizione inglese del 1813. Spine faded, worn and chipped at head and tail (maximum 20 mm, ¾ inch), marbled paper rubbed, corners and board edges worn, inscribed on front pastedown, a name on front endpaper, occasional light browning. A good copy of rare early German children's book (VOLUME II ONLY) on astronomy and the seasons. At the end of the introduction is printed the name of Karl Friedrich Hofmann although it does not appear on the title page. No copy on Worldcat nor in the German National Library, and not in Bilderwelt. The interesting hand coloured images depict activities in town and country according to the month of the year. The presentation inscription inside the front cover is probably from the eldest son of Rudolph Ackermann, also called Rudolph, to two of his brothers John and George and signed by him on January 31st 1815. The elder Rudolph Ackerman (1764 - 1834) born in Germany and settled in London circa 1795, was a very successful bookseller, inventor, lithographer, publisher and businessman. New Kinsky p. 450. The third version of Beethoven's only opera (originally entitled Leonore) was first performed May 23rd 1814 in Vienna. For this revision, the libretto of the first version, by Sonnleithner after Bouilly, was reworked by the poet G. F. Treitschke, and Beethoven made numerous changes to the score, including a new overture (now known as the Fidelio overture). The first version had premiered November 20th 1805; it was not a success, and Beethoven had made drastic cuts for its revival on March 29th 1806 before withdrawing the work altogether. "From the somewhat servile echoes of French and German light opera in the opening numbers, he [Beethoven] moved on to find an increasingly individual and elevated voice..." Beautifully printed, all in Latin with occasional liturgical directions in Spanish, of the masses for Holy Week, incl. Palm Sunday. The size of the lettering is large enough that the books must have been for altar use by the priest-celebrant. Palau [199404] records the set but notes that he had not seen it complete; he gives the location of the printers as Madrid, but there is no indication of this on the title-pages; a bookseller's ticket from Barcelona is pasted in one volume. OCLC records only one complete set, in the National Lbrary of Spain, and only one other partial set in a German library: none have appeared at auction. The volumes are in impeccable condition, fresh and clean, in a superb period marbled calf binding with gilt tooling, spines with red leather title labels and other gilt tooling. Fine set of this quite rare imprint.

Bookplate on front pastedowns o/w a fine copy. "Inevitably, the ludicrous excesses of Gothic fiction invited satire. In contrast to Jane Austen's subtle ridicule of Gothic readers and Radcliffean heroines in "Northanger Abbey," Barrett's "The Heroine" is a merciless frontal assault on every form of Gothic nonsense from the delicate palpitations of Mrs. Radcliffe and her school to the crude sensationalism of the Gothic bluebookers and horror hacks. What Henry Fielding had accomplished in debunking the moral seriousness of Richardson, Barrett would do to the supernumerary horrors of the Gothic novelists. Barrett's sense of farce is vitriolic, his narrative method, brutal and corrosive mockery, his avowed purpose, the extermination of the Gothic virus itself. Yet, "The Heroine" is more than simply an extended sneer at 'the Salinas, Evelinas and Malvinas who faint and blush and weep through four half-bound octavos.' This is coherent parody in the best Aristophanic tradition. It sets out to laugh an audience back into its senses and the burlesque Gothic is so good as to be almost indistinguishable from the real Gothic itself at many points. Not a single feature of Gothic absurdity evades Barrett's irate eye, from wild rhetoric to place and character names. (Frank: First Gothics p. 21-22) Eaton Stannard Barrett [1786-1820] Irish writer, author of poetry, political and other satirical work. Born in Navan (though some sources give Cork) educated at Wandsworth near London where he was considered "something of a genius for writing and putting on a play." While he trained to be a lawyer he was not called to the Bar, but instead became a literary and political journalist. In 1807 using the pseudonym "Polypus" he published All the Talents: A Satirical Poem a "verse satire on the Whig-dominated government. The poem went through 19 editions in a year and Barrett followed it with three more political satires. Later Barrett turned to satire on the culture of the "decadent upper classes." In 1811 the Minerva Press published his "The Metropolis; Or A Cure for Gaming." In 1813 he published the above work as "The Heroine; or Adventures of a Fair Romance Reader" which was revised the next year under the title above and went into several editions. Signature opposite title page of each volume of Robert Pitcairn (1793-1855), dated Dec. 1823. Pitcairn was a Scottish antiquary and author of Criminal trials and other Proceedings before the High Court of the Judiciary in Scotland (1829-1833). Altogether GOOD CONDITION. +++ . \" As soon as he finished his medical studies in 1812, the Englishman Henry Holland (1788-1873) started on a journey lasting several months, the account of which he later published, with twelve engravings based on his own drawings. In his prologue, he emphasizes that he will not only describe archaeological sites and monuments, but also focus on the current situation in the country, because: The interest which the world now takes in Greece, refers not merely to ancient times, but regards also the future condition of a people who are again resuming a national character, and whom time and political changes may again raise to perfect independence. Holland sailed from Sicily to Zacynthos, where he was able to collect demographic and economic information on the rest of the Ionian Islands as well. When he reached the territory of Ali Pasha, he went first to Arta and then stayed for some time in Giannina. There, as a physician, he had the opportunity to become well acquainted with the infamous Pasha’s contradictory personality and to write on his administrative abilities. Holland was impressed too by the commercial and intellectual dynamism of Giannina’s inhabitants. He then continued on to Thessaly, visiting the monastic community at Meteora and the town of Tyrnavos. While in Larissa, he became acquainted with the Greek doctor, erudite and philosopher Ioannis Vilaras, whom he admired. After a short visit to Ambelakia, Holland reached Thessalonica, and wrote on life and commerce in that populous city. He then travelled to the Sporades islands, and subsequently went to Lamia and Thermopylae. He spent Christmas of that year in Delphi. Then, after visiting Livadeia, where he stayed in the home of Logothetis, a wealthy man of the community, he ended up in Athens, where he stayed for a month. In continuation, in the winter of 1813, Holland travelled to the Peloponnese (Corinth, Nemea, Mycenae, Argos, Tripolis, Patras). He then moved northwards. In Preveza he met with Ali Pasha once more and then reached devastated Souli. He visited various towns in Albania (Delvinaki, Argyrocastro (Gjirokastër), Tepeleni, Apollonia, Himara, Buthrotum (Butrint) and Aulona (Vlorë). Among other features of his chronicle, of special interest are the descriptions of the church of St Demetrios in Thessalonica, Dion, Lamia and Hydra, all quite rare for the era, as well as Holland’s most interesting observations on Athens. Holland then returned to England. In 1840 he became physician to the King. He travelled extensively in Europe and visited America six times. Holland died on his eighty-sixth birthday.         Report of the trial of Michael Stocks, Esq. for wilful and corrupt perjury,

      8vo., (4) 109 (1)pp., with a list of errata on verso of final leaf, contemporary half calf over marbled boards, neatly rebacked and gilt lettered. A very good copy. This trial centred on an accusation that Michael Stocks had, without the consent of his two partners, taken and sold for his own private benefit 10,000 tons of coal from the partnership's coal mines at Northowram* in the West-Riding of Yorkshire. Stocks was eventually found not guilty. The transcript of the trial brings to light not only the detailed contractual history of the partnership, but also such contentious matters as the exact legal boundaries of neighbouring workings, as well as the status of a number of supposed agreements, both written and verbal. * Northowram is a small village in Calderdale, West Yorkshire, 2? miles north-east of Halifax and 6? miles from Bradford.
