        9 eigenh. Briefe m. Unterschrift.

Zus. 25 S., 8. -

Here and there over the water: being cullings in a trip to the Netherlands. London, George Hunt (printed by J. Davy), 1825. 4to. With aquatint illustration plates (27 plus frontispiece) after the author's drawings (24 engraved by George Hunt and coloured by a contemporary hand; 4 of inscriptions in black and white engraved by W. Bartlett), with tissue guard leaves. Early 20th-century gold-tooled red goatskin morocco by George Bayntun (the Bayntun bindery continues to flourish today as one of the finest in England).

Abbey, Travel 188; Tooley, Coloured plates 207 . First and only edition of an eccentric account of a tour in what is now Belgium (from 1815 to 1830 part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands) by a fictional traveller referred to as "Omnium Gatherum", humorously written and brilliantly illustrated by Michael Egerton, whose work has been compared with that of George Cruikshank. The people he sees play an important role, from the passengers in the coaches to a chimney sweep on a roof, people drinking and dancing, soldiers in the streets and Waterloo locals who try to fob off any piece of garbage as a remnant of the battle. The handsome plates depict coaches, barges, the exchange in Antwerp, costumes, and monuments at Waterloo. Gatherum lands at Ostend, then travels to Ghent, Brussels, Antwerp and finally Waterloo, which is covered very extensively, only 15 years after Wellington defeated Napoleon. With bookplate of the Philadelphia art collector Charles Edward Dunlap. In very good condition, with only a small marginal tear in one leaf. The binding has cracks in the hinges, but is otherwise in good condition. A delightful and brilliantly colour-illustrated tour of the sights of Flanders, Brussels and Waterloo.

Manuscript on rice paper entitled "Honcho ika koseki ko" ["Studies on old and rare Japanese Medical Literature"]

38 folding leaves. 8vo (240 x 170 mm.), orig. patterned wrappers, new stitching. Japan: dated "1815" on final leaf. The first medical bibliography to appear in Japan. "Descriptions of old Japanese medical books were given by Shuryo or Shutei Nakagawa (1773-1850) in an unpublished work entitled Honcho ika koseki-ko, consisting of one book or volume. That work was written in the 12th year of Bunka (= 1815), and at that time a few handwritten copies were made. It was published (i.e. printed) for the first time in 1922 in Volume 1 of the collection known as the Kyorin sosho, this published version being based on a manuscript copy made in the 10th year of Bunsei (= 1827)… "Some of the old Japanese medical books described in that classic work were the following: the Daido ruijiuho (808 A.D.), the Kinram-po or Kinran-ho (868A.D.), the Shuchu-taiso-kyo (n.d.), the Ishinho (984 A.D.), the Rosei-sho (n.d.), the Shochuho (n.d.), the Iryaku-sho (1081), the Ishinho-ryaku (n.d.), the Chosei ryoyo-ho (1884), the Den kobyo niju-ho (Kenbu period), the [K]ishitsusoshi (n.d.), the Meiiden (Eijin period), the Zoku ten yoketsu (n.d.), the Taii shukyo (n.d.), the Kyuryo-sho (n.d.), the Toryo-sho (n.d.), the Kanen yosho (n.d.), the Zofu shurui-sho (Kenji period), and others of similar nature… "Nakagawa's Honcho ika koseki-ko was, probably, the most important of the Japanese medical bibliographies to appear in pre-Meiji times."-Mestler, "A Galaxy of Old Japanese Medical Books With Miscellaneous Notes on Early Medicine in Japan. Part V. Biblio-historical Addenda…", pp. 170-71. Nakagawa (1773-1850), lived and studied with Seishu Hanaoka (1760-1835), "perhaps the most notable Japanese surgeon of the Edo period…who also wrote on prescriptions, fevers, diagnosis by means of symptoms, and obstetrics. He successfully operated for tumors (particularly of the breast), amputations of the extremities, hydrocele, cancer of the tongue, anal fistula, and even performed certain kinds of plastic surgery. Indeed, he was the first one in Japan who dared to extirpate large tumors, to remove necrotic bone, and to perform amputations."-Mestler, A Galaxy of Old Japanese Medical Books, III, pp. 152-53. Hanaoka is, of course, most famous for being the first surgeon to use anesthesia. Nakagawa, following his studies with Hanaoka, went to Kyoto to study with Nangai Yoshimasu and learned Western medicine from Sanpaku Inamura. Nakagawa then went to Osaka where he worked with Hanaoka and perfected his knowledge of anesthesiology. In fine condition. Five copies of this manuscript are known to survive in Japan. WorldCat records a 1932 reprint.

The English Dance of Death [with] The Dance of Life.

Ackermann London -1817 1815 - First editions. 3 volumes, 8vo., (26 x 16 cm), Hand-coloured aquatint frontispieces, title vignettes to volume I of first work, and to second work, 71 plates and 24 plates respectively, watermarks "Alston 1814, 1815" and "0 / 1817" indicating earliest issues of the plates, original boards uncut, buckram chemises and slipcases, a fine and remarkable set. "Indispensable to any Rowlandson collection, one of the essential pivots of any colour plate library" (Tooley). "The idea of Death as the universal predator, stretching out his bony hand to seize his prey at moments inopportune and unexpected, showing the vanity of human life and the futility of human pleasures and pursuits, had been pictured by many artists before Rowlandson, notably Holbein . These may have inspired Rowlandson but in his Dance of Death he takes his characters from the world around him, sees them in his own original way, and imparts to the subject his own satirical humour, with its curious combination of the sublime and the ludicrous. It is obvious at a glance that the artist bestowed exceptional care on the illustrations for this book. The union of the gruesome and the grotesque appealed strongly to his imagination, and in completeness of detail and carefulness of grouping the illustrations excel nearly all his other work. The hand-colouring also has been delicately and judiciously applied. Combe's versification is full of wit and vigour . The Dance of Life is full of cheerful and humorous satire of life and its follies." (Hardie). Hardie 171-172; Abbey Life 263 and 264; Tooley 411 and 410. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

      - First edition of this invaluable and tragic history of the Bibliotheca Palatina of Heidelberg, the most important library of the German Renaissance, along with accounts of other Heidelberg libraries. "Ninety-five years after the sack of Rome by Lutheran lands-knechts a Catholic army marched into the Palatinate to punish its Calvinist Elector. To Pope Gregory XV a glorious prize suddenly appeared within reach: the famous public library of Heidelberg, founded in the mid-sixteenth century by the Elector Ottheinrich, celebrated for its ancient manuscripts sequestered from the abbey of Lorsch (including another Vergil of great antiquity). The nuncio in Cologne was instructed discreetly to make known in Germany the Pope's willingness to accept an offer of the collection, and his wish was granted by Maximilian of Bavaria within five days of the town's capture. Three thousand, five hundred manuscripts and five thousand printed books from the Elector's private collection and the university as well as from the public library were removed to Rome. Thus the Palatina ceased to exist; its shelves were chopped up to make packing-cases, and Bavarian soldiers helped themselves to the books that remained behind. Two centuries later consciences were still troubled and in 1815-6 Pius VII returned all the German manuscripts, 842 in number, and forty-two in Latin to the Duchy of Baden."-Hobson, Great Libraries, p. 80. Wilken (1777-1840), prorector of Heidelberg University, negotiated with the French government the return of 38 Palatina manuscripts which had been ceded by the Vatican to the French in 1797 by the Treaty of Tolentino. Very fine copy in original state. From the Wittelsbach library of the dukes and kings of Bavaria. Two engraved plates with nine facsimiles, printed in color. x, 552 pp. 8vo, orig. blue wrappers, uncut. Heidelberg: A. Oswald, 1817 [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Laws of the United States of America from the 4th of March, 1789, to the 4th of March, 1815, Including the Constitution of the United States. The Old Act of Confederation, Treaties, and Many Other Valuable Ordinances and Documents; with Copious Notes and References, In Five Volumes

Philadelphia and Washington: John Bioren & W. John Duane and R.C. Weightman, 1815. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. Five volume set, complete. Volumes I, III, IV, V an original set in matching full sheep with red spine labels, matching ownership signatures on front endpapers; Volume II married and with a slightly different binding. All voumes clean and sound internally (other than some browning of the paper); externally varying degrees of scuffing to the leather; some volumes with cracked hinges or joints (but all boards attached). Chip to spine of Volume II. In 1814, President Madison approved an act aimed at producing a more complete and satisfactory edition of the Laws of the United States to date. The act provided for a government subscription to produce 1000 sets to be edited, compiled, and distributed according to a plan of the Secretary of State and Attorney General. Secretary Monroe appointed John B. Colvin as editor, and under his editorship this edition, generally referred to as the "Bioren Edition," was produced. Volume I contains the foundational documents and treaties of the nation, though the Constitution was erroneously printed with a 13th amendment (the Titles of Nobility amendment, which would have stripped U.S. citizenship from anyone who accepted a title from a foreign nation) that had not been (and never was) ratified. Because this was considered the official and definitive set of laws, the error was frequently repeated in popular histories in the following decades. Volume II contains the laws from 1789-97 (1st-4th Congress); Volume III the laws from 1797-1805 (5th-8th Congress); Volume IV the laws from 1805-15 (9th-13th Congress). Volume V is the general index.

Prima edizione. The articles . . . under their separate heads of Poetry, History, &c., with a general index to the whole, give the new edition a great superiority over the first edition." - Lowndes. Sir Samuel Egerton Brydges, 1st Baronet (30 November 1762 – 8 September 1837) was an English bibliographer and genealogist. He was also Member of Parliament for Maidstone from 1812 to 1818. Educated at Maidstone Grammar School and The King's School, Canterbury, Brydges was admitted to Queens' College, Cambridge in 1780, though he did not take a degree. He was called to the bar from the Middle Temple in 1787. He wrote some novels and poems, now forgotten, but rendered valuable service through his bibliographical publications, Censura Literaria, Titles and Opinions of Old English Books (10 vols. 1805-9), his editions of Edward Phillips's Theatrum Poetarum Anglicanorum (1800), Arthur Collins's Peerage of England (1812), and of many rare Elizabethan authors. He was a founding member of the Roxburghe Club, a publishing club of wealthy bibliophiles. He was elected a Knight Grand Commander of the Equestrian, Secular, and Chapterial Order of St. Joachim in 1807, at a Chapter held in Franconia. In 1789, the Chandos barony became dormant. Egerton Brydges attempted to claim the title, initially on behalf on his older brother Rev. Edward Tymewell Brydges, then later on his own behalf. The litigation continued from 1790 to 1803, before the claims were ultimately rejected, but he continued to style himself per legem terrae Baron Chandos of Sudeley. It seems likely that not only was the claim groundless but that the evidence was forged. He was made a baronet on 27 December 1814. He died in Geneva. (Wikipedia)
