Travels in Some Parts of North America, In the Years 1804, 1805, & 1806

York: W. Alexander. Darton, Harvey, and Darton. Wm. Phillips. Longman, Hurst and Co., 1815. Second Edition, Improved. Full Straight Grained Morocco. Very Good Plus. Unusual copy, with the six plates hand-colored! (All other known copies lack hand-coloring.) 12mo. 18 by 11 cm. 309 pp. The hand-coloring, we would stress, was also done with care and precision -- it greatly enhances the plates and gives them the aura of finer folk art. Light rubbing along the joints. Scattered light soiling within. Overall, a very attractive copy.

The principles of war, exhibited in the practice of the camp; and as developed in a series of General Orders of Field-Marshal the Duke of Wellington, K.G. &c. &c. &c. in the late campaigns on the Peninsula, with parallel Orders of George the Second, the Duke of Cumberland, the Duke of Marlborough, Earl of Albemarle, Lord Stair, General Wolfe, &c. &c. &c.

London: William Clowes. * 1815 - 8vo., xxviii + 338 + xxxvii + (1)pp., occasional very minor rust mark or stain, with relevant, old, ms annotations on two pages, bookplate removed from front pastedown, contemporary half calf over marbled boards, extremities and joints rather worn, spine gilt and lettered but with some wear. Generally a good, sound, copy. First edition and really quite uncommon. Although not written or edited by Wellington himself, this clearly draws largely from an analysis of his recorded Orders in the second Peninsular campaign between 1809 and 1814. The hundreds of Orders, here reprinted, classified and indexed, provide a remarkable record of war management in the early 19th century. The Orders are grouped here in some 31 chapters, each with a distinct theme, the Orders themselves printed in chronological order. They cover such themes as discipline, the camp, working parties, ammunition, markets and provision, post and letters, chaplains, regimental schools, pay-master and pay, commissariat, hospitals, 'on the march', means of transport, baggage, convoys, public and private horses and mules, forage, 'the enemy's country', 'before the enemy', 'in action', 'after battle', police, law-martial, &c. &c. One feature of note is the clear sequence of instructions that local populations were to be treated with respect, that hay, grain and other vital provisions were to be paid for and that theft would not be tolerated. By way of example, a General Order was issued at Jaracejo, 16th August, 1809, thus: 'The soldiers are again positively prohibted to plunder bee-hives; any man found with a bee-hive in his possession will be punished'. * The editor's dedication to Wellington ('the Illustrious Hero') is dated June 27, 1815, a mere nine days after Waterloo.         THE SECOND ADVENT, OR COMING OF THE MESSIAH IN GLORY, SHOWN TO BE A SCRIPTURE DOCTRINE, AND TAUGHT BY DIVINE REVELATION, FROM THE BEGINNING OF THE WORLD

Trenton, (N.J.): D. Fenton & S. Hutchinson, 1815. First Edition. Very Good binding. A thoughtful theological treastise by Elias Boudinot, a lawyer and enthusiastic supporter of the American Revolution, colonel in the Continental Army, and appointed by George Washington as commissary general for prisoners. He served a term as President of the Continental Congress. It should not surprise that as author of this work he called himself "An American Layman". The Second Advent is Boudinot's most substantial work: "The result of twenty-five years of reflection about biblical prophecies, it was one of a number of books written on the Second Coming during the nineteenth century" [David L. Holmes, The Faiths of the Founding Fathers; p. 153]. In contemporary calf, with morocco label. Some loss to the calf at the spine adjacent to the top of the label. A contemporary ownership signature at the top of the endpaper. The endpaper has been tipped in. 578 pp. (Shaw & Shoemaker 34180; Felcone 432). Very Good binding.

[Color Plate] Naples and the Campagna felice in a series of letters addressed to a friend in England, in 1802

London: R. Ackermann, 1815. First Edition. Full Calf. Fine. Royal 8vo: 4,400,[10]pp, with 18 hand-colored aquatints (2 maps [one folding], of the Gulf of Naples and of the Island of Capri, and 16 plates). Full polished tan calf, covers framed in French fillets with gilt corner devices, spine (re-laid) richly gilt in six compartments between raised bands, red morocco lettering piece gilt, top edge gilt, marbled end papers, red silk page marker. A spectacular copy, the binding square, tight, and unmarked; internally, fresh and bright with all tissue guards intact, pages crisp and unspotted, virtually no offsetting from the richly colored plates. Tooley 419. Abbey, Travel, 166. Grolier Rowlandson 30. "The text, which is by Lewis Engelbach, originally appeared in [Ackermann's] Repository of Arts in the years 1809 to 1813, under title 'Letters from Italy'. No plates appeared with the Repository version, however, except Map Number 2, which was published in October 1810, Part 22, Number 145. The imprint date here has been altered to 1815. The book is often said to contain seventeen or eighteen plates by Rowlandson, but in fact probably only nine are by him, Numbers 1, 3, 8, 10-13, 15 and 16. Of these only Number 1 [the frontispiece] carries Rowlandson's signature." (Abbey) N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition.         Effets la convention militaire du 3 Juillet 1815, et du traité du 20 Novembre 1815, relativement a l’accustaion de M. le Maréchal Ney.

Paris Crapelet 1815 - 4to., (ii) + 13pp., lightly spotted in places, preserved in modern wrappers with printed label on upper cover. First edition: apparently rare. [OCLC locates copies at McGill and in the BNF: COPAC adds one copy, in Oxford: KVK adds another copy, in Zürich.] A pamphlet published for the French army after Waterloo, in order to make absolutely clear that supporters of Napoleon would be prosecuted. Michel Ney was undoubtedly the greatest of Napoleon’s marshals. After the Emperor’s one hundred days and his defeat at Waterloo, Ney was condemned to be executed by firing squad, which he himself commanded on 7 Dec., 1815. This publication by the military tribunal, which sentenced him, is dated December 2, two days before his arrest, and makes it absolutely clear that after Napoleon’s defeat, there would be draconic measures against him and his supporters, such as Marshal Ney. Napoleon is described as ‘the enemy of the human race’ and those seduced by him ‘will perish as the accomplices of an assassination of which Napoleon was the detestable mastermind’.         [Torpedo Warfare] The art of war in seven books . . . to which is added, Hints relative to torpedo warfare by a gentleman of the state of New York

Albany: printed by Henry C. Southwick, 1815. Full Leather. Very Good +. Tall 8vo: 349,[1]pp, with 7 folding plans (one two-sided) in the main work of armies arrayed in varying battle formations and 10 woodcuts in the text of the final work illustrating aspects of torpedo warfare. Included in the pagination, with separate title page, is "Some anecdotes, relating to the life and writings of Nicolas Machiavel, collected from various authors" (pp. 287-322). Contemporary full sheep, spine in six compartments divided by double gilt rules, red morocco lettering piece gilt. A Very Good or better copy, binding secure and tight (boards pocked with one or two miniscule losses), pages toned but clean and supple, plans correctly folded and completely intact. Provenance: M. S. Hayes, in elegant contemporary script to first blank. Small ink stamp of Reuben Hayes to first and second blanks and edge of title page. Shaw & Shoemaker 35164. Translation of L'arte della guerra (first published 1521) and the first American edition of any work by Machiavelli. Essentially a series of seven Socratic dialogues between Cosimo Rucellai and Lord Fabrizio Colonna (probably Machiavelli himself), in which Fabrizio, who dominates the discussions, advocates adapting the form of the Roman Legion to the defense of Renaissance Florence and details how such an army should be raised, trained, organized, and deployed. The anonymous essay on torpedo warfare that fills the final 27 pages is introduced as follows: “The Author of the following Hints, has thought proper to take this method of giving private circulation to a description of some instruments of destruction . . .” Robert Fulton is referred to by name several times in the text and may, in fact, have been the author. British naval interference with American commerce had led Fulton to publish a work on torpedo warfare in 1810 (Sabin 26199), apparently before any other writer on the subject. But see the discussion in Alex Roland’s Underwater Warfare in the Age of Sail (Bloomington, Indiana, 1978), pp. 120-21, which argues that the Author was, in fact, not Fulton but an annonymous gentleman whose "ideas revealed a thorough and acknowledged debt to Fulton" with a "sprinkling of original schemes as well. Some were merely fanciful, like a horse-propelled boat and a remotely controlled exploding ship. Others, such as a magnetic mine and a spar topedo, had the germ of important innoivations. . . . When the gentleman advanced the entriely practical idea of a chemical fuse, he confessed that he didn't know how it worked but had read it 'in old books' [by Fulton?] and heard it asserted."

He published his principal work, "Traité d'économie politique ou simple exposition de la manière dont se forment, se distribuent et se composent les richesses", in 1803, in which he advocates liberal views such as free trade and competition, developing the teachings of Adam Smith and others. The work offered here, "Catéchisme d'économie politique...", a more popular variant of the "Traité...", was an attempt at sharing his thoughts and the principles of political economy with a larger audience.         9 eigenh. Briefe m. Unterschrift.

Zus. 25 S., 8. -
