Literatura inglesa. Poesía inglesa. Viajes. Humor. English literature. English poetry. Travels. Humour.

        AUTOGRAPH QUOTATION SIGNED (AQS)

5 July 1815. Framed Manuscript. Not examined out of the frame but appears to be Fine. A one-page (8" x 10") lengthy AUTOGRAPH QUOTATION SIGNED by Wordsworth from a poem by Fulke Greville (Lord Brooke), a contemporary and friend of poet Philip Sidney. In full: "The chief use, then in Man of that he knows Is his painstaking for the good of all; Not fleshly weeping for our own made woes, Not laughing from a melancholy gall, Not hating from a Soul that overflows In bitterness, breathed forth from inward thrall; But sweetly rather to ease, loose, or bind, As need requires, this frail, fallen human kind.Lord Brooke./Peter House July 5th 1815/Wm Wordsworth." It is clear why Wordsworth might have chosen these words of Brooke's--"Man's Service" from A TREATISE OF HUMANE LEARNING--to write as the two shared the notion that while knowledge might bring happiness, it also increases susceptibility to suffering and self-torment. Matted and framed with an engraved portrait of Wordsworth to an overall size of 22" x 18". Fulke Greville (1554-1628) was a close friend of Sir Philip Sidney and a great patron of letters. Most of his works were not published until after his murder by a servant who thought he had been omitted from his masterís will. Some believe Greville is the true author of several plays attributed to William Shakespeare.

1815 Bible, First Brookfield Edition of the King James Version: The Holy Bible Containing the Old and New Testaments: Together with the Apocrypha: Translated Out of the Original Tongues, and with the Former Translations Diligently Compared and Revised

Brookfield, Massachusetts: Merriam and Co., 1815. Full leather with leather spine label, "Holy Bible" in gilt. Edge-worn and rubbed, with foxing throughout. Front hinge cracking, but binding is firm, no loose pages. A solid copy of this First Brookfield Edition, of which 12,000 copies were printed from 184 to 1815. Ebenezer Merriam, the publisher, was born in 1777; served his apprenticeship to Isaiah Thomas. The Darling Family were the original owners of this copy. Printed on the verso of the title page is rectangular ornament simulating a bookplate, in which is written in contemporary script: "Hannah Darling's Book." Family dates (births, marriages, deaths) are recorded in a space provided between the Old and New Testaments. Both Hannah Darling (nee Murdock) and her husband, Jewett, were born before the Revolutionary War, married in 1809, and had five children (three survived infancy). Genealogy research indicates that Jewett Boynton Darling served during the Revolutionary War and that Hannah's sister, Deborah, was his first wife. They had married in 1790 and in 1809, as Hannah recorded in the family Bible, he married Hannah. A few interesting items are found in various pages of the book: Four-leaf clovers, some dark thread, and finally, at the end of the New Testament, a torn page impressively hand-sewn back together again with white thread! 959 pages.. Hard Cover. Fair.

1815 Bible, First Brookfield Edition of the King James Version: The Holy Bible Containing the Old and New Testaments: Together with the Apocrypha: Translated Out of the Original Tongues, and with the Former Translations Diligently Compared and Revised

Merriam and Co., Brookfield, Massachusetts 1815 - Full leather with leather spine label, "Holy Bible" in gilt. 959 pages. He died, still in debt, at his Lambeth Road address on 19 June 1823. The obituary in The Times the next day stated that: [h]e was a gentleman who, in the course of this protracted life, had suffered many fortunes, and had become known to so many people in every rank of society, that it hardly seems necessary to draw his character. There was hardly a person of any note in his time, with whose history he was not in some degree acquainted. ODNB.
