La Nouvelle Atala; ou, La Fille de l’Esprit: Légende Indienne par Chahta-Ima (De La Louisiane).

Imprimerie du Propagatetr [sic] Catholique. First edition.. Wrappers a little worn and creased; very good copy.. BAL 7910; OCLC records four copies (BL, two in France and UC Berkeley). Small 8vo, original printed blue wrappers, 139 pages. A novella in French by Adrien Emmanuel Rouquette (1813-1887) about an idealized Louisiana Indian maiden. At the conclusion is an unsigned review of the work by the young assistant editor of the New Orleans Item, Lafcadio Hearn - his first appearance in a book, preceding his first book (a translation of Gautier’s Cleopatra’s Nights) by three years. Rouquette was a poet and priest from New Orleans who spent much of his time living in the countryside with the Choctaw Indians (who named him “Chahta-Ima”), due in part to local disapproval of his iconoclastic and anti-slavery views. Hearn was taken with Rouquette and praises his novella in the review: “We have before us the advance pages of a romance which we do not hesitate to term the most idyllic work in the literature of Louisiana.” See the DAB for Rouquette.

        The Life of Nelson

London: Printed for John Murray, Bookseller to the Admiralty and to the Board of Longitude,, 1813. 2 volumes octavo, (156 × 98 mm). Contemporary straight-grained calf by David Batten of Clapham Common, tickets to rear pastedowns, new green morocco lettering- and red morocco numberoing pieces to style, low flat bands with triple fillets, compartments with arabesque tools in blind, attractive zig-zag panel in blind to the boards, foliate roll to the board edges and to turn-ins, marbled edges and endpapers, narrow green silk page-markers remain intact. Engraved portrait frontispiece to volume I, frontispiece of volume II with five facsimile signatures, both half-titles present, ads dated March 1813 tipped in at the front endpapers of Volume I. Just a little rubbed, foxing fore and aft as usual, affecting frontispieces and title pages, light browning and a scatter of foxing throughout, very good. First edition, first issue with p.258 of volume II misnumbered as 852. "Southey constructed an early-nineteenth century hero as a model for the young - in his words, a 'patriotic manual.' He told a friend that he would write 'such a life of Nelson as shall be put into the hands of every youth destined for the Navy.'" (Knight The Pursuit of Victory p.542) As it most assuredly was, and many more besides, coming to dominate the Nelson biography market, perpetually in print. Elegantly written and surprisingly even-handed on the issue of the Neapolitan Jacobins. This copy with the ownership inscriptions of William Calvert of Greta Bank, friend of Wordsworth, and of Southey, together with the later inscription of William's daughter Mary in her married name Stanger, having married Joshua Stanger, also a friend and correspondent of Southey. Mary's cousin, Mary Maude was married to Constantine Moorsom, the son of Admiral Richard Moorsom, captain of the Revenge, "who bore a distinguished and active part" at Trafalgar (Ralfe, p.33), and carried the great banner at Nelson's funeral (ODNB). A very pretty sdet.

Description of the Retreat, an institution near York, for insane persons of the Society of Friends. Containing an account of its origin and progress, the modes of treatment, and a statement of cases.

York: printed for W. Alexander, and sold by him. 1813. 8vo., xx + (1) + 22-229 + (1)pp., engraved double-page plate of the North Front of the Retreat, two double-page engraved plans, the plates with some dampstaining and foxing, mainly marginal, intermittent slight foxing throughout, old (19th century) ink stamp in title margin of 'Medical Staff Library', the stamp repeated on verso of frontispiece, contemporary half calf over marbled boards, fairly recently rebacked, a sound but not beautiful copy. First edition: 8vo. issue. Garrison Morton 4925.1. Hunter & Macalpine pp.684-690. Norman cat. 2109. Osler 6561. Wellcome V, p.306 (the 4to. issue). A classic in the history of European psychiatry and care for the mentally ill. Notably it gave the first detailed account of the methods and results of a mild, humane system, in the first purpose-built institution of its kind. In contrast to the notorious closed-door policies of other insane asylums, the Retreat, a Quaker asylum, welcomed the observation of its humanitarian methods, the success of which was praised throughout England and the Continent. 'This book by a layman did more to improve the care and treatment of the insane in asylums and indirectly also to stimulate the development of psychiatry than many a 'scientific' tome written by a physician. ... The pioneer work of the Tukes opened a new chapter in the history of the insane because of the avowed aim to accord them the dignity and status of sick human beings, and to substitute self-restraint based on self-esteem induced by a mild system of management for the debasing and brutalising coercion and restraint of the 'terrific system'.'         [drop-title] Decreto.

[1] f. (printed on both sides).. 1813] The General Assembly herewith holds "los mencionados indios de todas las provincias unidas => por hombres perfectamente libres, y en igualdad de derechos todos los demas ciudadanos que las pueblan." It additionally specifically ratifies the 1 September 1811 decree of the Junta Provisional Gubernativa that freed the Indians from encomienda and mita obligations, and from church-related tribute. This fine and very important human rights document is printed in double-column format in four languages: Spanish and Aymará on the recto, and Quechua and Guaraní on the verso. => This is the first four-language publication in the New World. Documents printed in more than one indigenous New World language are rare: That this one presents a decree in three native languages is exceptional and it is even more so because of its significant, perhaps not unrelated content. The promulgators clearly wanted this document conferring legal rights on los Indios aymará, quechua y guaraní to be clearly understandable to them as doing that — partly, if not primarily, to gain their support in the ongoing war of Independence — and they wanted to describe those rights to them with unmistakable correctness. The press, of course, was one of the most famous of Spanish America's "orphan presses," maintained as a teaching, vocational operation in the city's orphanage for boys. We trace no copies of this item in NUC Pre-1956, and WorldCat locates only three copies in U.S. libraries, one in the Spanish National Library, one in the Chilean National Library, and none in Britain. Similarly, COPAC fails to find any copies in its reporting libraries. Possibly removed from a bound volume. Uniformly age-toned. => A good exemplar without stains or tears. In a red cloth folder.

Recherches sur la Géographie systématique et positive des Anciens; pour servir de base à l'histoire de la Géographie ancienne

Paris: An V, i.e. 1797-, 1813. Some browning, as is often the case with this set.. Four volumes, quarto, with 53 maps on 28 folding plates and an engraved compass rose; an attractive set in later half crimson morocco with gilt lettering. Only edition of this substantial study of the geography of the ancients, analysing their understanding and mapping from Europe and Africa to as far afield as India and the Indian Ocean. Various maps show the knowledge or imagination of early geographers such as Ptolemy, Strabo, Pomponius Mela, Herodotus and Isidore of Seville, while the text deals exhaustively with the history of geography and geographers, however obscure. As a test for example it is interesting to see that Cosmas Indicopleustes is discussed at some length.Pascal-François Gossellin (1751-1830) travelled widely through Europe as a young man, while his parents encouraged him to learn the ways of business. He joined the Royal Council of Commerce in 1784, and later the central administration under Louis XVI. He continued to travel, and developed friendships with Necker and Voltaire, both then in Switzerland. However he was always pulled towards the world of learning and especially the study of ancient geography. In 1790 he won a competition set by the Academie Royale des Inscriptions (see above) and the following year he was elected to membership. When the Revolution came he devoted himself to research for this book, analysing all the texts to which he had access. The book was published in two halves, fifteen years apart, with the second half appearing just before the restoration of the monarchy. His involvement with the world of learning included his appointment as President du conservatoire at the Bibliothèque Nationale in 1803.

OGURI GAI DEN: TALES OF THE SAMURAI OGURI HANGAN: Being the Story of the Lives,

Osaka 1813, Kawauchi. Red & blue stitched stiff wrs., covers. rubbed, edges worn, contents solid, 18 volume set, Japanese. text, woodblock printed by hand on hand-made mulberry paper,. 26+24+26+28+21+37+25+38+18+23+24+22+23+15 double-folded lea-. A CHARMING CLASSIC OF CONFUCIAN & MORAL ETHICS FOR SAMURAI leaves, with many woodcut illustrations. A lovely Edo period edition, a legend based on fact, "...containing essential features of the enduring moral view of people, giving a con- tinued life from generation to generation down the centur- ies centuries" is how De Benneville put it. A classic of Japanese literature and moral education. Often performed in the theatre or now in the cinema, this work is part of an important method of learning the history of the land and the deeds of famous fore-bears. A morale romance, set in 15th century, in Hitachi province. It covers the houses of Oguri & Satake, adventures & misadventures of Sukeshige & Terute, a vendetta accomplished. For a surperb & rare English trans- lation see TALES OF THE SAMURAI OGURI HANGWAN ICHIDAIKI... translated by James S. De Benneville or inquire with us as we may have a copy available. The work is a stunning story or Kodan [dialogue-lecture] with excellent illustrations of the characters & main events. De Benneville even cites this edition on p.xi of the preface, from which one can expect he did this translation. By and large a great example of from Japan's rich pantheon of literary and Confucian moral class- ics. Stories of this nature were the foundation on which Bu- shido, or the Samurai's "spirit" was based, it was the kind of book that most noblemen, noblewomen and Samurai read for moral training, and the substance for generations.         Millennial praises, containing a collection of gospel hymns, in four parts; adapted to the day of Christ's second appearing. Composed for the use of his people.

Hancock: Pr. by Josiah Tallcott, jr. 12mo. viii, 288, [4 (adv.)] pp.. 1813 First edition of the very first Shaker hymnal, including the text without music for 140 hymns. The work also has the distinction of being the first book from a Shaker press, having been preceded only by broadsides and pamphlets. That the Hancock printers were still learning their art is evident by the at times wobbly impression of the type, the sudden shift to a smaller point size in part of the table of contents, etc. But it is a noble effort. This work appeared during the period of American Shaker history when attention was expended on codifying Shaker beliefs and practices. This is the first attempt to codify the hymnal. Full original calf, plain style, rubbed overall with small chips on front cover; chip at head of spine, front joint starting. Paper browned, and some stains; a bit of blue crayon doodling in blank area of top left corner of p. 50. Early leaves with stitch holes in inner margin, not touching text; three leaves with tears, not affecting text. Ex–theological library with area of spine blacked out where call number once was; library name and five-digit number rubber-stamped on front pastedown, accession number inked and rubber-stamped at base of p. [iii].

        Sense and Sensibility

      T. Egerton, London 1813 - Martha Lloyd's copy, bearing her signature to the title page of each volume. Martha was Jane's closest friend and confidant after her sister Cassandra, Jane dedicated an early work, Frederick and Elfrida to her and she was one of the few people privy to Jane's desire to write. Jane, her mother, Cassandra and Martha lived together from 1805 and Martha eventually married Frank (Sir Francis) Austen in 1828, becoming Lady Austen. Martha is now best known as a collector of recipes, but is also well regarded as a writer and it is considered likely, considering how close the two women were, that some of her suggestions would have found their way into Jane's novels. The books are bound in contemporary quarter calf, with marbled boards, original endpapers and vellum corners, all volumes retain their half-titles. The books have recently been conserved, with a small amount of sympathetic restoration, an earlier re-backing which had preserved much of the original spines having become fragile. The hinges and gutters have been neatly repaired with toned tissue, providing much greater strength than was previously the case. The work has been carried out with the emphasis on preserving as much originality as possible. The text blocks are toned and somewhat foxed, with one or two gatherings slightly protruding. Very few books inscribed by Austen exist and tend to command vast sums when they appear, scraps of paper bearing her signature occasionally surface, fascinating themselves in their sheer ephemerality, but usually lacking any context. Here you have a book that belonged to one of her most intimate friends and, given the date of publication, it is reasonable to assume that it would have been in the same house that the two women shared, so with only a small leap of the imagination you can visualise Jane herself handling these volumes. A superb association copy, allowing a tantalisingly close brush with one of this country's greatest novelists. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
