[Nectarine] Homerton's White Nectarine; Ford's Black Nectarine; Italian Nectarine

[London]: G. Brookshaw, 1812. Aquatint engraving, with some stipple, printed in colours and finished by hand. In excellent condition. Image size: 16 3/8 x 12 1/8 inches. A fine image from Brookshaw's masterpiece: 'Pomona Britannica; or, A Collection of the Most Esteemed Fruits'. George Brookshaw's 'Pomona Britannica' is the finest work on fruit and flowers ever produced. Its breathtaking images display a level of technical virtuosity and beauty that distinguish this magnificent work as a true work of art. As a retired cabinetmaker, Brookshaw produced his seminal botanical study late in his career, at first publishing it in parts and then as a complete edition in 1812. The fact that this outstanding work took ten years to complete is evident in the quality of its images and the care with which Brookshaw executed each individual picture. 'Pomona Britannica' was produced as a visual record of the best available varieties of fruit in an attempt to encourage gardeners to experiment with growing fruit, and illustrates examples found in the Royal gardens at Hampton Court, Kensington Gardens, and the private gardens of the Prince of Wales in Blackheath. 'Pomona Britannica' differs from other botanical works in its dark aquatinted backgrounds and its stylized compositions. By using aquatint to create a contrasting background, Brookshaw manages to produce a truly dramatic effect. His use of stylized composition distinguishes his pictures from the dry scientific illustrations found in other botanical studies and creates an exceptionally beautiful visual experience. 'Pomona Britannica' is not only a didactic study, it is a masterpiece of illustration in which every picture is a testament to the artist's talent and ingenuity. Cf. Dunthorne 50; cf.         SKETCHES TOWARDS A HORTUS BOTANICUS AMERICANUS; OR, COLOURED PLATES (WITH A CATALOGUE AND CONCISE AND FAMILIAR DESCRIPTIONS OF MANY SPECIES) OF NEW AND VALUABLE PLANTS OF THE WEST INDIES AND NORTH AND SOUTH AMERICA

London, 1812. Quarto. Antique-style half calf and marbled boards, spine gilt, leather label. Titlepage slightly soiled, minor age toning. Contemporary gift inscription on first page of preface. Old repaired tear in bottom margin of first page of preface, touching a few lines of text. Very good. This copy bears a contemporary gift inscription on the first page of the preface: "The gift of Warwick Pearson Esq. of Kirky, Lonsdale, Westmoreland to Tho. Warwick Syndman, Antigua." Titford was a Jamaica-born physician who lived on that island for many years, travelled extensively in the United States, and described himself as a corresponding member of the Society for the Encouragement of Arts. Otherwise little is known about him, excepting this work, for which he made all of the original drawings for the beautiful handcolored plates. Titford's only known publication, the volume was originally issued in six parts, and editions appear with titlepages dated 1811 and 1812. These factors may account in part for the variations in pagination between extant copies, supporting Ian MacPhail's comment in his "Titford's HORTUS BOTANICUS AMERICANUS..." that "the cataloguer who is faced with the bewildering collation of J.W. Titford: SKETCHES TOWARDS A HORTUS BOTANICUS AMERICANUS, London, 1811, is likely to throw up his hands in despair." An exquisite color plate botanical work, one of the earliest to depict American plant species, here with a fine contemporary Caribbean provenance.

Newark Castle & Bridge Nottinghamshire

London: Published by J. Deeley, 95 Bewick St. Soho, 1812. Coloured aquatint. Printed on wove paper watermarked J. Whatman. In excellent condition with the exception of two small mended tears on the right margin. Two small mended tears on upper margin. Crease along left corner. Tiny skillfully mended tear on left margin. Image size: 12 7/8 x 19 1/8 inches. A dramatic view of Newark Castle in Nottinghamshire. The site became a fortified castle during the 12th century when Henry I gave Alexander, Bishop of Lincoln, permission to build ramparts and a moat. The castle was appropriated in 1139 by King Stephen but was reinstated to Lincoln in 1173. In 1216 King John died at the castle and thereafter it was seized by a group of barons. In 1218 Henry III besieged the castle and, after being bombarded in it for eight days, the barons surrendered. Restored and rebuilt in red sandstone by the end of the 13th century, it had become a magnificent fortified mansion. In Tudor times Henry VIII took the castle from Bishop Henry Holbeach and after that it remained in royal hands. During the Civil War, Newark was a Royalist stronghold. It was besieged four times by the Parliamentarians. King Charles I took refuge at the castle before retreating to Oxford, and the town finally surrendered its stronghold. Benezit mentions a British landscape painter by the name J. R. Hamble who was active in London during the early decades of the nineteenth century. He exhibited at rare intervals at the Royal Academy between 1803 and 1824, and was mentioned as an accomplished landscape painter. There is some confusion surrounding an engraver named J. Hamble who executed numerous topographical prints of the English countryside, and it is queried whether these artists are in fact the same person. Le Blanc mentions an engraver by the name of J. Hamble, but fails to list his works. Le Blanc, Manuel de L'Amateur D'Estampes I, p. 340; Benezit, Dictionnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs et Graveurs, vol. 6, p. 703.

        [Napoleon II]

1812. Stipple and engraving. Colour printed a la poupée, with additional hand colour and goldleaf highlights. Proof before title. Printed on wove paper. In excellent condition with the exception of being trimmed within the platemark. Glue residue around edges of sheet on verso of print, not visible from the front. Image size: 9 9/16 x 12 9/16 inches. This is a superb colour printed portrait of Napoleon II, with elaborate gold leaf details and heavy hand colouring. In addition to being a superb Napoleonic portrait, this outstanding print is one of the finest examples of French colour printing. Born in 1811, Napoleon II was the only son of Napoleon Bonaparte and Marie Louise of Austria. He was given the title the King of Rome, and later made the Prince of Parma. Following the collapse of the French Empire, Napoleon abdicated in favor of his son although he would never come to rule France. For his protection he was quickly spirited to Austria by Marie Louise, only to spend the majority of his life as a virtual prisoner in Vienna. He died of tuberculosis in 1832. Executed a year after Napoleon II's birth, this stunning print is a wonderful example of the visual dissemination of Napoleon's imperial vision. The young Napoleon is surrounded by symbols, the coronation robes, the crown, and the necklace, that indicate his destiny to succeed his father as Emperor. The view of Rome in the background illustrates his title as King of Rome and the regal tone of the image recalls the iconography of Napoleon's coronation portraits. The baby boy is shown to be uncommonly adult with his casual pose. serious demeanor and distant gaze.

JOURNAL OF THE VOYAGES AND TRAVELS OF A CORPS OF DISCOVERY, UNDER THE COMMAND OF CAPT. LEWIS AND CAPT. CLARKE [sic]...FROM THE MOUTH OF THE RIVER MISSOURI THROUGH THE INTERIOR PARTS OF NORTH AMERICA TO THE PACIFIC OCEAN, DURING THE YEARS 1804, 1805, AND 1806

Philadelphia, 1812. 12mo. Contemporary tree calf, gilt label. Edges of covers worn, hinges tender. Contemporary ownership inscriptions on front free endpapers, verso of map, and titlepage. Age- toning and dampstains, offsetting from plates. A good copy. In a half morocco and cloth box. Styled the "fourth edition" on the titlepage, after the first edition of 1807 (but with the plates not found therein), which Howes states was the "earliest full first- hand narrative of the Lewis and Clark expedition, preceding the official account [by] seven years." "This 1812 edition seems identical in text with my 1807 and 1810 edition, but it has, added, a folding map and two preliminary pages headed 'Review of this Work.' The plates are the same, and the pagination is kept the same by eliminating the half title after the preface" - Streeter.

        Registre de correspondances]. Londres, Paris.

[Melon] White Candia (White Flesh Melon)

[London]: G. Brookshaw, 1812. Aquatint engraving, with some stipple, printed in colours and finished by hand. Very good condition. Image size: 16 5/8 x 13 inches. A fine image from Brookshaw's masterpiece: 'Pomona Britannica; or, A Collection of the Most Esteemed Fruits'. George Brookshaw's 'Pomona Britannica' is the finest work on fruit and flowers ever produced. Its breathtaking images display a level of technical virtuosity and beauty that distinguish this magnificent book as a true work of art. 'Pomona Britannica' differs from other botanical books in its dark aquatinted backgrounds and its stylized compositions. London: Printed by W. Bulmer and Co. Shakspeare-Press and sold by G. and W. Nicol [et al.] 1812 - [ Descripción completa disponible en castellano, inglés y francés / Complete record available in Castillan, English and French / La notice complète est disponible en castillan, anglais et français ] // Folio imperial (502 x 377 mm); [1] h. grab., [2] h., 12 p. [14] h. con 7 grabados, [2] h., 6 p., [118] h. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Contemporary sheep, with red morocco label on the upper cover, tooled in gilt, neatly rebacked, with extremities worn. Provenance : Henry Paul Beck (Philadelphia, ownership inscription and annotations); two bookplates on front pastedown A remarkable sammelband, comprising three works relating to the physical geography of Philadelphia. Most notable is the restrike of the famed Holme map of Philadelphia, which was published with the first title but is almost always missing. Thomas Holme was named Surveyor-General of the new colony of Pennsylvania by Penn in 1682, and produced this map, entitled A Portraiture of the city of Philadelphia in the province of Pennsylvania , the following year. The map is a notorious rarity of American cartography. "This printed map is the first to depict an English colonial North American town and is of considerable importance" (Burden). The first three states of the map were all printed in London in 1683 by the Quaker printer Andrew Sowle, and are distinguished by minor variants in the imprint. In the 1790's the original engraving plate was brought to Philadelphia, where, with slight alterations and added information, this fourth state was printed. The advertisement leaf following the titlepage explains: "For the Portraiture of the City, in the Appendix, the editor is indebted to Dr. George Logan, of Stenton, who is in possession of the original plate, from which the impression was taken." Logan was a direct descendant of James Logan, who was effectively the Penn family representative in America from about 1699 until his death in 1751. Because the the date of the accompanying text, the present printing of the fourth state is usually dated 1812. The original printing plate is now at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. Philadelphia was the first city in colonial America to be laid out beforehand on a plan. Penn felt that it was important to plan the city in such a manner to prevent the spread of disease and fire, which constantly plagued the crowded cities of Europe, and was eager to advertise the logical arrangement of his new settlement with a published map. Holme's map, anticipating streets and squares yet to be laid out, it would prove to be a source of later disputes. Nonetheless, it was an accurate enough reflection of reality 130 years after the founding of the city to serve as a current map. The second title discusses a plan for dealing with malaria in Philadelphia by providing better drainage into the Delaware River. it is notable for the striking folding panorama of the waterfront from Dock Street to Market St. which accompanies it, showing the new wharf buildings and docks proposed as civic improvements. Stephen Girard, whose last will and testament is the subject of the third work, supervised the conversion of a Philadelphia mansion into a hospital during the yellow fever epidemic of 1793. He stayed in Philadelphia to help nurse the sick and dying while many other prominent Philadelphians fled the city. Interestingly, Girard's will, in which he left millions to found Girard College, a boarding school for orphans, was contested by family in France but was eventually upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1844. This volume was probably bound together by Philadelphian Henry Paul Beck, whose contemporary bookplate is on the front pastedown. Beck has extensively annotated parts of Lowber's text with his views on details of the administration of the city. He has also annotated the Holme map by writing on the names of the streets (as of 1812) in the right margin.

A New and Elegant General Atlas. Comprising all the new discoveries, to the present time. Containing sixty three maps, drawn by Arrowsmith and Lewis

Boston: Published by Thomas & Andrews, 1812. Quarto. (10 5/8 x 9 inches). Letterpress title (verso blank), 1p. list of maps (verso blank). 63 engraved maps (2 folding). Expertly bound to style in calf-backed contemporary marbled paper-covered boards, flat spine in six compartments divided by fillets, lettered in the second compartment Provenance: Henry Roice (contemporary signature on the front pastedown) Nice copy of a scarce early American atlas, with an important early mapping of the American West. The first edition of this atlas was published in Philadelphia in 1804. American mapmaker Samuel Lewis had formed a partnership with English mapmaker Aaron Arrowsmith to publish an atlas to accompany editions of Morse's American Geography, which had been criticized for its poor illustrations. The atlas, as the title page infers, was a separate production could be used with any gazetteer or geographical work. Phillips lists further editions of 1805, 1812 and 1819. According to Ristow, all editions contain the same maps. Almost half of the maps in the atlas are of American interest: in addition to the two folding world maps at the front, maps 29-59 are of the Americas, with maps 31-50 being of individual States or Territories. Of note are four maps of importance to the American West, titled: North America, Louisiana, British Possessions in America and Spanish Possessions in North America (cf. Wheat, Mapping the Transmississippi West 259, 260, 261 & 262). The map titled Louisiana, which is based on the Soulard mapping, is of particular importance, depicting the region west of the Mississippi explored by Lewis and Clark. "The Samuel Lewis map was the primary map of the newly purchased territory of Louisiana and its surroundings and, as such, reflected the shaped American popular geographical images of the western interior at the time of Lewis and Clark" (Mapping the West, p. 80). Phillips, Atlases 718; Ristow pp.265-266; Rumsey 2436 (1804 first edition).

Zt. mit farb. Deckelschild. ? Das hier vorliegende Album legt davon Zeugnis ab. Der Schwerpunkt der Darstellungen liegt bei Detailzeichnungen des Heidelberger Schlosse. Das Album zeigt neben verschiedenen Gesamtansichten: Ansicht des achteckigen Thurms von der Gallerie, Ansicht des gesprengten Thurms, Ansicht eines Thores von der Gartenseite, Ansicht des Heidelberger Schlosses vom Fuße des Friesenberges, Ansicht vom Ausgange des letzten Gewölbes beym Herabsteigen vom H.         The Tatler, The Spectator, and The Guardian

London: John Sharpe, 1812, 1803-1813, 1814-1815. Fourteen small octavo volumes: the Tatler complete in four volumes, the Spectator complete in eight volumes, and the Guardian complete in two volumes. Full contemporary calf gilt, elaborately tooled, raised bands, red and green spine labels, marbled endpapers and edges. Early owner bookplates. Foxing to engraved plates, text clean. Lightest shelfwear to bindings. Complete edition of the three great coffee-house periodicals produced by Joseph Addison and Richard Steele, first published between 1709 and 1714. The Tatler, the Spectator, and the Guardian targeted (and to some degree, created) the rising London middle class, both men and women, offering readers an exemplary mix of ethical inquiry, philosophical speculation, and domestic advice: "When you see a man of sense look about for applause, and discover an itching inclination to be commended; lay traps for a little incense, even from those whose opinion he values in nothing but his own favour; who is safe against this weakness? Or who knows whether he is guilty of it or not?" The regular appearance of letters to the editor, a novel feature, encouraged readers to consider themselves part of a larger public conversation. The influence of Addison and Steele's essays extended far beyond the five years in which they first appeared. They were reprinted and emulated throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries; Benjamin Franklin, in his autobiography, recalls teaching himself to write essays as a boy by attempting to reproduce from memory what he read in the third volume of the Spectator. A near-fine set, splendidly bound by Simms of Manchester.

Generally considered the most important of the four Institutes, this was the only one published during Coke's lifetime. "N.J. Wyeth," the former owner of this book, is probably Nathaniel Jarvis Wyeth [1830-1916], a prominent corporate attorney, state legislator and civic leader who lived on Staten Island.       Luzern, 18. Juli o.
