A SERIOUS INQUIRY INTO THE NATURE AND EFFECTS OF THE STAGE

New York: By Whiting & Watson, 1812. First American Edition y. A fiery Presbyterian preacher at odds with the moderate party of his denomination, Witherspoon (1723-94) wrote this denunciation of players and playgoers in shocked response to the 1756 Edinburgh production of the historical tragedy "Douglas," written by a fellow minister, John Home. (Witherspoon and Home had previously shared an adventure, having led loyalist troops against a Scottish insurrection in 1745, having been imprisoned together in Doune Castle, and having effected a daring escape on bed sheets.) The stage drama and Witherspoon's response to it caused such an uproar that one minister was prosecuted by the Kirk merely for having attended, while Home himself was forced to resign his presbytery. All ended well, however, for Home went on to produce "Douglas" successfully in London and to become tutor to the Prince of Wales. Witherspoon also went on to higher honors: in 1768 he left Scotland to become president of Princeton College in what was then the colony of New Jersey. A rebel at heart, Witherspoon became one of the intellectual leaders of the American Revolution, signed the Declaration of Independence, and served the new government in several capacities before returning to Princeton, where he lectured on eloquence, history, philosophy, and divinity. The immediate motivation for the reprinting of Witherspoon's text in America more than half a century after its first appearance was the tragic fire in 1811 at a theatre in Richmond, Virginia, a blaze that took 60 lives, including that of the acting state governor, George W. Smith. A group of 11 New York ministers thought to respond with a stern denunciation of the immorality of the theater and a caution to all Christians to keep away from this playground of the devil. Their animadversions, along with a sermon on the topic by one of their number, Samuel Miller, comprise the preface to our first American edition.. 171 x 108 mm. (6 3/4 x 4 1/4"). 2 p.l., [5]-199, [1] pp. First American Edition. EXTREMELY ATTRACTIVE CONTEMPORARY FLAMED SHEEP, flat spine with simple gilt rules and black morocco label. Front pastedown with modern book label of Amos Tuck French. Minor offsetting throughout the text, one gathering rather foxed and browned, isolated stains of no great consequence; internally with some problems caused by inferior paper stock, but most of the text still surprisingly fresh, and THE INEXPENSIVE ORIGINAL BINDING IN SUPERB CONDITION, UNWORN AND VERY BRIGHT.A fiery Presbyterian preacher at odds with the moderate party of his denomination, Witherspoon (1723-94) wrote this denunciation of players and playgoers in shocked response to the 1756 Edinburgh production of the historical tragedy "Douglas," written by a fellow minister, John Home.         Influence or Prerogative? Being an Attempt to Remove Certain..

, 1812. 1812. Scarce Essay on the English Constitution Advocating a Greater Degree of Royal Influence Twiss, Horace [1787-1849]. Influence or Prerogative? Being an Attempt to Remove Certain Popular Misconceptions Respecting the Present State of the British Constitution and Government. London: Printed for J. Hatchard, 1812. 94 pp. Octavo (8-1/4" x 5"). Stab-stitched pamphlet bound into recent stiff wrappers, printed paper title label to front cover. Some toning, light foxing to a few leaves, light soiling to title page and verso of final leaf. "The Lord Viscount Palmerston with the Author's Compliments" to head of title page, interior otherwise clean. $500. * Only edition. A presentation copy to Lord Palmerston. The author defends the influence of the Crown in the scheme of British Parliamentary government; without it the Prerogative would have to be revived. In his conservative view of the constitution and its core concept of checks and balances, the increasing influence of the Crown is indicative of the growing power of Commons and consequently the need to maintain equilibrium. Twiss was called to the bar in 1811 and later served as King's Counsel. As an author he is remembered for his life of Lord Eldon and for a number of literary works. This is his first publication relating to the law. OCLC locates 2 copies in North America, neither in law libraries. Not in Sweet & Maxwell.

Breve relação dos escrituras dos gentios da India Oriental, e dos seus costumes (pp. 1-59) [A short account of the gentios of India and their customs]; 2.         Touching Autograph Letter Signed to 'Sir', (Jane, widow of Spencer Perceval, 1762-1812, from 1809 Prime Minister)

1812 - saying that "Lord Arden shewed me yesterday Evening a letter that he had received . on the subject of a small loan (as you are pleased to consider it) that you received from Mr. Perceval in the year 1804 . & ill should I repay that sacred trust which has so awfully devolved upon me if I did not make it a point of duty as it is of consolation to fulfill the spirit of all his wishes . I am very certain that he never intended that you should repay him one shilling of it - he called it a loan to make it more acceptable to your feelings & much as I respect the high sense of honor that has led you . I can safely assure you that the liberality of Parliament & the kindness of my own family . render it impossible that such a trifle should ever be missed by me or my Children - and deprives this act of respect to the memory of my beloved Husband of all the merit of self denial", 4 sides 4to black-edged, Downing Street, 2nd June Spencer Perceval was assassinated on 11th May 1812 by a bankrupt with a grievance against him.

Contemporary quarter calf over marbled boards, gilt-stamped spine panels and titles; light insect damage to spine of Vol. 4. Very good. Second edition. Bichat revolutionized descriptive anatomy. Where Morgagni and other shad conceived of whole organs being diseased, Bichat showed how individual tissues could be separately affected. He covered tissue pathology, system by system in the Anatomie generale, showing that tissues from different organs are similar and subject to the same diseases, and identifying 21 different types of tissues. This was done essentially without a microscope, but marks the beginning of modern histology. [Garrison & Morton].       London: 1804 - 1812 - Sheet Dimension: 22 x 18 in. Hand-colored aquatint engraving. Brookshaw’s fine illustrations make excellent use of the rich, modulated tones that the aquatint process creates. The elegantly arranged and richly colored fruits emerge from deep brown backgrounds or float on a softly mottled light ground, creating a presence unlike that of any other botanical illustrations. Brookshaw asserts in the preface that the Pomona Britannica was an enduring work created for the enjoyment and edification of “succeeding generations.” The beauty and uniqueness of his illustrations guarantees the lasting value of this most exceptional work.

Folio. xxxi, [3], 511, [3], 200, [2]pp. [London:] House of Commons, 1812. 339 x 202 mm. Half calf, gilt spine, boards ca. 1812, some wear and rubbing, a few small stains but sound. Very good. First Edition of Great Britain’s second census, taken in 1811, ten years after the first census. The returns gave a total population of 12.6 million people, an increase of 1.6 million over 1801. The second census followed the model of the first: The first part detailed the number of people, their occupations, and numbers of families and houses in each of the British counties, while the second part, based on parish registers, listed the numbers of baptisms and burials per county. John Rickman, who drafted the bill that became the 1800 Census Act, supervised the first four British censuses and prepared the abstracts and reports for each.         Anno 2065. Een blik in de toekomst, door Dr. Dioscorides. Tweede druk.Utrecht, J. Greven (back of title-page: printed by P.W. van de Weijer), 1865. 8vo. Modern black calf (faux morocco).

NCC (6 copies of this ed. & 6 copies of the first); cf. G. Lindberg-Wada (ed.), Literary history: towards a global perspective I, p. 104. Very rare second edition, published in the same year as the first, of an early Dutch science fiction novel, written by Pieter Harting (1812-1885), a Dutch biologist and early supporter of Charles Darwin's theories. While marvelling at the technological advances of the 19th-century, the main character suddenly finds himself in the year 2065, on a city square in "Londinia", the future London. There he meets a reincarnation of the 13th-century Roger Bacon, who guides him along a selection of several interesting scientific advancements. It was "the very first [literary] work to be translated [into Japanese] in the Meiji Era" (Lindberg-Wada), appearing in its first year 1868. With a small note about the author in pencil. Very slightly browned, some minor spots and the outer margins of the title-page slightly soiled, otherwise in good condition and wholly untrimmed.

A dictionary of the Malayan language, in two parts, Malayan and English and English and Malayan.London, printed for the author by Cox and Baylis, 1812. 4to. Set in roman and Arabic types with incidental Devanagari and italic. Modern blue cloth with a morocco spine label, retaining the nonpareil-marbled edges from the previous contemporary binding.

Cordier, Bibl. Indosinica, col. 1384. First edition of Marsden's excellent Malay dictionary, which quickly succeeded all earlier dictionaries and set the standard for those that followed. The author's 16-page introduction discusses the language and the arrangement of the dictionary and ends with a brief table showing the Malay alphabet, with reference to the grammar for a more detailed one. The main part of the book is a Malay-English dictionary, arranged alphabetically following the Arabic script. The headwords are in the Arabic script followed by a phonetic transcription and an often very detailed definition in English, sometimes including related Hindi words in the Devanagari script. The shorter English-Malay dictionary gives the English headwords alphabetically, usually followed by several possible translations in the Arabic script, each with a phonetic transcription but without the detailed explanations of the Malay-English dictionary. With some slight browning or foxing and with a small worm hole running through the entire book, but otherwise in very good condition, with only an occasional minor marginal defect. A good mix of scholarly rigour and practical application.
