London; 1804-1812 - Sheet Dimension: 19 x 15.25 in. Frame Dimension: 28.25 x 24.25 in. Hand-colored aquatint engraving. Brookshaw’s fine illustrations make excellent use of the rich, modulated tones that the aquatint process creates. The elegantly arranged and richly colored fruits emerge from deep brown backgrounds or float on a softly mottled light ground, creating a presence unlike that of any other botanical illustrations. Brookshaw asserts in the preface that the Pomona Britannica was an enduring work created for the enjoyment and edification of “succeeding generations.” The beauty and uniqueness of his illustrations guarantees the lasting value of this most exceptional work.

The second census followed the model of the first: The first part detailed the number of people, their occupations, and numbers of families and houses in each of the British counties, while the second part, based on parish registers, listed the numbers of baptisms and burials per county.         Anno 2065. Tweede druk.Utrecht, J. Greven (back of title-page: printed by P.W. van de Weijer), 1865. 8vo. Modern black calf (faux morocco).

NCC (6 copies of this ed. & 6 copies of the first); cf. G. Lindberg-Wada (ed.), Literary history: towards a global perspective I, p. 104. Very rare second edition, published in the same year as the first, of an early Dutch science fiction novel, written by Pieter Harting (1812-1885), a Dutch biologist and early supporter of Charles Darwin's theories. While marvelling at the technological advances of the 19th-century, the main character suddenly finds himself in the year 2065, on a city square in "Londinia", the future London. There he meets a reincarnation of the 13th-century Roger Bacon, who guides him along a selection of several interesting scientific advancements. It was "the very first [literary] work to be translated [into Japanese] in the Meiji Era" (Lindberg-Wada), appearing in its first year 1868. With a small note about the author in pencil. Very slightly browned, some minor spots and the outer margins of the title-page slightly soiled, otherwise in good condition and wholly untrimmed.

A dictionary of the Malayan language, in two parts, Malayan and English and English and Malayan.London, printed for the author by Cox and Baylis, 1812. 4to. Set in roman and Arabic types with incidental Devanagari and italic. Modern blue cloth with a morocco spine label, retaining the nonpareil-marbled edges from the previous contemporary binding.

Cordier, Bibl. Indosinica, col. 1384. First edition of Marsden's excellent Malay dictionary, which quickly succeeded all earlier dictionaries and set the standard for those that followed. The author's 16-page introduction discusses the language and the arrangement of the dictionary and ends with a brief table showing the Malay alphabet, with reference to the grammar for a more detailed one. The main part of the book is a Malay-English dictionary, arranged alphabetically following the Arabic script. The headwords are in the Arabic script followed by a phonetic transcription and an often very detailed definition in English, sometimes including related Hindi words in the Devanagari script. The shorter English-Malay dictionary gives the English headwords alphabetically, usually followed by several possible translations in the Arabic script, each with a phonetic transcription but without the detailed explanations of the Malay-English dictionary. With some slight browning or foxing and with a small worm hole running through the entire book, but otherwise in very good condition, with only an occasional minor marginal defect. A good mix of scholarly rigour and practical application.

Ein Gerecht und Wohl Aprobierte Haus Apodeken oder Pferd Artznei Buch With: (2) Eine Agadami dass ist Artzney Mittel vor Menschen zu gebrauchen. [Upper Austria, part 1 of 1st work dated 1812 at end]. 2 works in 1 volume, the 1st in 2 parts. Folio (35 x 22.5 cm). A practical manuscript handbook in brown and black ink on paper, written in German in a German gothic hand and with numerous headings and paragraph openings in a variety of decorated gothic styles. With an elaborately decorated main title-page in at least 6 colours, the title-page of part 2 of the main work with decorative lettering and flowers in brown and red with a half-page colour drawing of a bleeding horse in the foreground of a landscape with a partly ruined castle, a church, a stone entry and other buildings, and the title-page to the 2nd work with decorated lettering and a crowned figure of death (a skeleton with scythe and hourglass). Further with drawings of 2 magical signs to protect people and livestock, and a vase of flowers and a scene with 2 buildings as tailpieces. Contemporary blind-tooled half calf.

A remarkable Austrian manuscript in German, richly and elaborately decorated in numerous colours, devoted primarily to veterinary medicine and pharmacology for the treatment of horses, but also discussing the treatment of other livestock and with the second (shorter) work devoted to the treatment of humans. It gives instructions for preparing and using many medicines, the main work covering about 400 ailments and the work for human medicine about 50. The slightly primitive landscape on the title-page of part 2 shows a horse standing in the foreground with what appears to be blood streaming from 12 points on his body. Several headings toward the end of part 2 announce sections on ailments caused, cured or warded off by magic, including "Zauberische Kranckheiten der Roß" (p. 110) and "Ein bewertes Styck [= Stück] vor Zauwerey fur Menschen und Viech dieses bey Sich zu Tragen, und den Vuch im Stall Angenagelt" (p. 117). The latter includes two drawings of the signs that are to be carried around or nailed up[?] in the stall. They look rather like alchemical signs. With one or a few small and unobtrusive worm holes near the foot of the page through most of the manuscript, some stains and restorations in the gutter margin of the first few leaves and an occasional minor stain or smudge on other leaves, but still in good condition. The binding is worn and shows some restorations. A fascinating and elaborately decorated manuscript devoted primarily to the treatment of medicine ailments in horses, mixing folk remedies with magic.

Travels Through the Southern Provinces of The Russian Empire, in the years 1793 and 1794. Translated from the German .

London: Printed for John Stockdale, 1812 - 2 volumes, quarto. Recent antique-style sprinkled calf, red morocco labels. Some offsetting from a number of the plates, occasional foxing and browning, largely to the heavier paper-stock used for the text vignettes, maps browned, as often, else a very good set, unopened and untrimmed. 52 plates (44 hand-coloured, 21 of these folding), 28 vignettes (23 hand-coloured), and 3 folding maps. Second edition of one of the chief travel narratives describing Russia in the late eighteenth century, first published 10 years earlier. Pallas, an eminent German naturalist, describes what he saw "with Teutonic thoroughness" (Nerhood). A handsome production due mainly to the attractive and charming colour illustrations which appear as vignettes in the text as well as additional plates. The illustrations depict the natives of the regions traversed, their costumes and occupations, the scenery and landscapes. Although the title page calls for 121 plates, all of those listed are present. Pallas is best known for his contributions to botany, particularly the "Flora Rossica" and this travel narrative provides a background for his plant collecting ventures.

8vo: CIX, 276pp; (4), 408pp; (4), 375pp. With large folded engraved map, original publisher's blue paste paper wrappers with printed label to spines. The author of René, and Atala, and a major figure in the Romantic movement, Chateaubriand provides here a narrative that is both historiography and guide through antiquity for the Grand Tour. The author excels at relating the richness of classical antiquity with the less than opulent contemporary state of Greece, Turkey, and the Holy Lands. Replete with quotations and insightful references, the Itinéraire also provides a model of the intellectual profile of the educated European traveler at the beginning of the nineteenth century. The first edition was exhausted so quickly that a second edition was called for the same year, which included the author’s corrections of dates and other details. Chateaubriand’s journey lasted from July 1806 to June 1807. His itinerary as recorded here is divided into seven parts: Voyage de la Grèce (I); Voyage de l'Archipel, de l'Anatolie et de Constantinople (II); Voyage de Rhodes, de Jaffa, de Béethléem et de la Mer Morte (III); Voyage de Jérusalem (IV et V); Voyage d'Egypte (VI); Voyage de Tunis et retour en France (VII). Half Calf glossy tan mid nineteenth-signed Belz Niedrée. Back to nerves nets. Part of title in black morocco and second piece in red morocco. Friction. Upper joint split partly fragile. The work is considered one of the major works of the Italian musical literature in the nineteenth century. Carpani was musician and critic (he wrote even an opera), he went to Vienna, the musical scene of the time, where he admired Haydn, Beethoven and Rossini. Haydn died in 1809 There are also three biographers who followed and known Haydn and collected his memories and activities. Diplomat Georg August Griesinger (1769-1845), whose book was published in 1810, the painter and composer its Albert Christoph Dies hours (1755-1822) also appeared in 1810, and the Italian writer Giuseppe Carpani (1752-1825), The Haydine, published in Milan in 1812.'s book is thus a major source for the composer's life. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.

Two highly legible hands. 78 leaves (48 are blank or ruled awaiting entries). 16mo, cont. green half-sheep & green boards, flat spine gilt, spine lettered "Catalogue des Plantes."

Following her marriage to Duke Pius August of Bavaria in 1807, the couple resided in Bamberg and I would assume she kept her garden there. The catalogue is in three sections - for the years 1812, 1813, and 1814 - and lists about 450 plants, including many exotic species. Accompanying this is an octavo manuscript alphabetical index of the catalogue, undated but from the same period. Fine copies from the library of the Kings of Bavaria.

Large Folio (59.5 x 44.0 cm). 66 pp., 22 engraved plates, of which 15 printed in two colours. Contemporary green quarter vellum over green marbled boards. Red morocco label with gilt title and borders on the spine.l A very rare work on human anatomy and movement, exemplified by fine, large illustrations of a Roman gladiator, printed in red and black. The author and publisher, Jean-Gilbert Salvage (1770-1813) was a French army doctor. The so-called 'Borgehese warrior' forms the basis of his work. It is a life-size Hellenistic marble sculpture portraying a swordsman, created at Ephesus about 2,100 years ago. "It was found before 1611, in the present territory of Anzio south of Rome, among the ruins of a seaside palace of Nero on the site of the ancient Antium .... From the attitude of the figure it is clear that the statue represents not a gladiator, but a warrior contending with a mounted combatant. In the days when antique sculptures gained immediacy by being identified with specific figures from history or literature ... The sculpture was added to the Borghese collection in Rome. At the Villa Borghese it stood in a ground-floor room named for it, redecorated in the early 1780s by Antonio Asprucci. Camillo Borghese was pressured to sell it to his brother-in-law, Napoleon Bonaparte, in 1807; it was taken to Paris when the Borghese collection was acquired for the Louvre, where it now resides." Apparently Salvage was inspired by seeing the statue in Paris. All the anatomical and osteological renderings were designed by Salvage. Uncut, with the widest possible margins. Armorial bookplate of the Barante library on the front pastedown. Board edges a bit rubbed; cover at spine ends abraded, split in lower rear joint. Except for a few small, inoffensive spots internally clean. A very good copy. Brunet, 6757.

On the first two blanks is a 2 1/4 page manuscript note by Roxburghe's godson George N. Hamilton copying from the General Evening Post an article about the bidding war over a Boccacio between Earl Spencer and the Marquis of Blandford, which the latter won at a price of £2,260, and ending with: "N.B. The Duke of Roxburghe left my Father by will half of all his personal property, in which was included his celebrated library. His house in St. James Square which contained this library formed part of the personal property. The Duke was my godfather." Hamilton includes a few prices and notes within the catalogue as well."A new era in British book-collecting may be said to start with the Roxburghe sale (1812). For the first time in the history of bibliophily, the four- figure limit was reached in an auction sale for a single printed book. From being the hobby of a scholar or the whim of an eccentric commoner, the collecting of rare books became, once more, as in Harley's and Sunderland's days, the favourite pastime of the wealthy nobleman.John, third Duke of Roxburghe (1740-1804), had found in the family library a certain number of valuable books.Round this nucleus he built a handsome and extensive library. mainly devoted to incuunabula, French chivalry- romances, early English and Italian literature, Shakespeare and the drama. The sale was a most sensational affair and the total of £23,341 was an extraordinary one for the time. Dibdin has scribbled reams of enthusiastic literature on the smallest incident of each daily session." De Ricci, English Collectors of Books & Manuscripts 1530-1930, pp 71-72. Dibdin, Biblioliographical Decameron, III, pp. 49-69 17, [3], iv, 284 (i.e. 283); iv, 21; 73 pp. 1 vols. 8vo [Attributes: First Edition]

Description De l'Egypte, Histoire Naturelle. Zoologie, Reptiles. Pl 4.

Size: elephant in Folio

"It was found before 1611, in the present territory of Anzio south of Rome, among the ruins of a seaside palace of Nero on the site of the ancient Antium . From the attitude of the figure it is clear that the statue represents not a gladiator, but a warrior contending with a mounted combatant. In the days when antique sculptures gained immediacy by being identified with specific figures from history or literature . [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Sketch of the Sikhs; A Singular Nation, Who Inhabit the Provinces of the Punjab, Situated Between The Rivers Jumna and Indus

London: Printed for John Murray 1812 - Sole edition thus. 8vo. (iv), 198 pp, bound without the final leaf of publisher's advertisements. Contemporary half calf rebacked to style, raised bands, gilt lettered red label, an autograph letter signed from the author bound in on a tab at the front of the book. Originally published in the eleventh volume of the Asiatic Researches. However, not being in "common circulation, it is now republished; and may prove acceptable, as a short and clear account of an oriental people, of singular and religion and manners, with whose history the European reader can be but little acquainted." The letter is addressed to "My dear Hare", Malcolm's friend the writer and theologian Julius Hare. He apologises for being in a "great bustle", but confides that "they are I am told to make me Governor of Bombay again and give me other work congenial to my whole soul." The letter has been dated 16th January, possibly in Hare's hand, and will have been composed in 1827 - the year Malcolm was appointed to the Bombay governorship. Malcolm had previously sought out the job of Governor of Madras, but Stephen Rumbold Lushington was the preferred candidate. However, in late 1826 it became apparent that Mountstuart Elphinstone was to retire from Bombay. Malcolm had considered other appointments in England in the interim, but he keenly accepted the opportunity to return to India with the potential to one day gain the highest Imperial rank, that of Governor-General. This ambition was never realised as despite his successes in Bombay his tenure was spiked with several controversies. He returned to England in 1830 where he spent the remaining three years of his life. Scarce.
