        A View of the Strand Bridge, from the Design of John Rennie, Esqr. F.R.S. &c.&c.&c. Engineer to the Company. To Henry Swann Esqr. M.P. Chairman, the Committee of Directors, and the Company of Proprietors of the Strand Bridge, this View is with permission Dedicated by their most Obedient Humble Servant, William Anderson.

      Published by W. Anderson, Paddington Green, Dec. 5, 1811., London, - "The Strand Bridge" Engraving and aquatint with original hand colour. The Strand Bridge was the original name of the first Waterloo Bridge before it was renamed in honour of the Duke of Wellington's great victory. The Strand Bridge Company was formed by a group of investors who wanted to build a new toll bridge to take advantage of the growing number of people needing to cross the Thames. It was designed by John Rennie, the Scottish architect. It was renamed by Act of Parliament in 1816 in honour of the great victory won by the Duke of Wellington over Napoleon Bonaparte, and opened by the Prince Regent on the second anniversary of the battle. The Italian sculptor Antonio Canova described it as "the noblest bridge in the world, worth a visit from the remotest corners of the earth".The print is dedicated to Henry Swann, a Tory politician and the chairman of the Strand Bridge Company.William Anderson (1757-1837) was born in Scotland and became an artist specializing in maritime painting.Matthew Dubourg (fl.1786-1838) was an engraver in aquatint who often worked for the London publishers Edward Orme and Thomas McLean.         Gehörnte Landziege. Gehörnter Landziegenbock.

       Zwei Radierungen in Braun mit zusätzlicher Staffage in eigenhändiger Aquarellmalerei. Beide rechts unten monogr. \"WK\" (in Bleistift ergänzt zu Kobell), 1811, ca. 6,9 x 8,2 cm. Goedl-Roth 33 und 34. - Zwei Gegenstücke, die in ihrer qualitätvollen eigenhändigen Aquarellmalerei durch den Künstler bestechen. Bereits im Jahr 1963 kosteten zwei ähnliche Gegenstücke auf einer Auktion von Karl & Faber in München DM 3.220,- und werden als „Kabinettstücke allerersten Ranges von der Schönheit eines Aquarells aus der besten Zeit Kobells“ beschrieben. Die zarten Radierungen in Braun bilden nur den Hintergrund: sie sind vollständig aquarelliert und mit zusätzlicher Staffage bereichert. Bei den hier vorliegenden Blättern hat Kobell zusätzlich einen Hüterbub im Hintergrund der Ziege hinzugefügt, die Bäume und Bauernhäuser leicht verändert und stärker akzentuiert sowie die Ziegen im Vordergrund in ihrer charakteristischen Färbung herausgearbeitet. Das Kolorit des Bodens ist bei den Gegenstücken durchgehend und betont so ihre Zusammengehörigkeit. Eigenhändige Arbeiten von Wilhelm von Kobell zählen heute zu den großen Seltenheiten des Marktes und sind begehrte Sammlerstücke. Offensichtlich hat der Künstler eine kleine Anzahl von Radierungen aquarelliert und nach Lust und Laune zusätzliche Figuren dazugemalt. Er verwendete dazu die in Braun gedruckten und dadurch weicher wirkenden Radierungen. Die Ergänzungen von seiner Hand sind so kongenial, dass die \"normale\" Radierung im Vergleich geradezu \"leer\" wirkt. - In blütenfrischer, tadelloser Erhaltung. In zwei alten Rahmen.       Günter Behm-Blancke. Heiligtümer der Germanen und ihrer Vorgänger in Thüringen - Die Kultstätte Oberdorla. Weimarer Monographien zur Ur- und Frühgeschichte, Band 38/1. Forschungen zum alteuropäischen Religions- und Kultwesen. Mit Beiträgen von Helga Jacob, Herbert Ullrich, Hans Eberhardt. Überarbeitet und ergänzt von Sigrid Duek und Barbara Lettmann. 332 Seiten, 71 Textabbildungen, 51 teils farbige Tafeln Oberdorla ist der bedeutendste und einzige Kultplatz in Mitteleuropa abseits der sonst in Norddeutschland und Skandinavien konzentrierten germanischen Kultanlagen. Am Rande eines Sees wurden von der einheimischen Bevölkerung über 1000 Jahre lang, von der vorrömischen Eisenzeit bis zur Zeit des Thüringer Königreiches (ca. 6. Jh. v. Chr. - 6. Jh. n. Chr.) über achtzig archäologisch nachweisbare Heiligtümer angelegt. Den Mittelpunkt bildeten Idole als Stellvertreter der verehrten Gottheit und Kultstangen, an denen die Opfer in der Regel Tieropfer niedergelegt wurden. Durch die Feuchtbodenerhaltung blieben viele Holzgegenstände, die mit dem Kultzeremoniell im Zusammenhang standen, erhalten: Idole, Kultinsignien, Gefäße und Geräte. Daneben stießen die Archäologen aber auch auf Spuren von Menschenopfern.         Catalogue des Livres de la Bibliothèque de feu M. J.B.G. Haillet de Couronne, Ancien Lieutenant-Général Criminel au Baillage de Rouen, Secrétarie perpétuel honoraire de l'Académie des Sciences, Belles-Lettres et Arts de la même Ville, Membre de l'Académie des Belles-Lettres de Caen, etc.

      - xvii, 311 pp. 8vo, cont. blue straight-grained half-morocco & paste-paper boards (upper joint a little wormed). Paris: Tilliard Frères, August 1811. A fine sale of 2325 lots, containing about 15,000 volumes, and priced throughout in a contemporary hand. The savant Haillet (1728-1810), a member of a distinguished noble family, formed a library particularly rich in natural history, geography, antiquities, literary history, and bibliography. We learn from the "Avertissement" that Haillet began to collect books at the age of 12 and ultimately formed a library amounting to 48,000 volumes. A fire at the Château de Couronne destroyed more than 16,000 volumes (and another 17,000 volumes or so were considered too damaged to be sold at the auction). He was well-known for his bibliographical expertise and left many scholarly notes regarding various bibliographical projects. Our copy has a contemporary note on the title stating that the sale took place in January and February of 1812. Fine copy and scarce. This copy does not have, as usual, the four-page schedule of the sale. ? Grolier Club, Printed Catalogues of French Book Auctions.1643-1830, 515. Horne, p. 708-"As M. Haillet not only possessed great taste for bibliography, but was also well skilled in that science; the class of literary history is the most numerous, and most of the works were illustrated by his notes.".         Plan General de la Ciudad de Mexico levantado por el Teniente Coronel Don Diego Garcia Conde, en al Ano de 1793, y Gravado en Miniatura en Londres por Eduardo Mogg, el Ano 1811.

      Eduardo Mogg,, London, 1811 - Mogg?Äôs rare plan of Mexico City Engraved hand coloured map, dissected and backed on linen, a few wormholes skilfully repaired. A reduction of Diego Garc??a Conde?Äôs map of Mexico City, published by Edward Mogg. The original, published in 1807, was ?Äúprobably the most important plan that had been drawn up of Mexico City in the nineteenth century?Ä This plan became the source to many others because it was copied and updated by several authors and editors?Äù (Mayer). It was drawn on an unusually large scale from an accurate survey carried out by Viceroy Conde de Revillagigedo in 1793. The Viceroy had initiated a raft of social and urban reforms in the city, including the foundation of the Academy of Saint Carlos, where the map was produced. The mapmaker, Diego Garc??a Conde (1760-1822) was a military engineer who fought in the War of Independence; the engraver Jos? Joaqu??n Fabregat (1748-1807), was director of engraving at the Academy. The original plates for Conde?Äôs map were destroyed: this reduction was published in 1811, probably because of British interest in the Mexican War of Independence, which had begun in 1810, and another in New York in 1830. Although it is a reduction, Mogg?Äôs map still shows Mexico City in some detail, capturing both the wealth of the centre of the Spanish Empire, and also the developments made under Conde de Revillagigedo?Äôs viceregency. The city is divided into eight wards, with the public, religious and government buildings in each marked by a key. Also visible is ?ÄúLa Garita de Bel? n?Äù, which would play a crucial part during the Mexican-American War: after it fell to American troops, Mexico City itself was captured.Edward Mogg (fl1803-1860) was a cartographer, engraver, and publisher, active in London at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Rather unusually for the time he not only drew his own maps, but also engraved them. The business was mainly based upon the production of pocket travel guides and maps.There are only two copies remaining of the 1807 original, in the British Library, London and University of California, Berkeley. We have only been able to trace one institutional example of this edition: that held by Yale University Library. 540 by 600mm (21.25 by 23.5 inches). For the 1807 original, see Sonia Lombardo da Ruiz, ?ÄòAtlas hist??rico de la ciudad de M? xico?Äô (Mexico City, 1996), plate 144; W. Michael Mathes, Illustration in Colonial Mexico: Woodcuts and Copper Engravings in New Spain, 1539-1821 (Zapopan: Colegio de Jalisco, 2003), Register 9989; Roberto L. Mayer, Poblaciones Mexicanos: Planos y panoramos siglos XVI al XIX (Mexico City: Smurfit Carto ??n y Papel, 1998), pp. 76-77 (illustrated); Palau 98695 (incorrectly attributed).

        Book Rarities; or a Descriptive Catalogue of some of the most Curious, Rare, and Valuable Books of Early Date; chiefly in the Collection of the Right Honourable George John Earl Spencer, K.G. &c. &c. &c

      - Three facsimile illus. in the text. iv, 34 pp. 8vo, cont. red half-morocco & brown drab boards, sides ruled in blind, spine lettered in gilt, a.e.g. London: Printed by W. Bulmer, 1811. First edition, limited to 36 copies only (so printed on the half-title), and a presentation copy, inscribed on the free front endpaper "With the Author's respectful Compts." This is the very rare specimen of what was to ultimately become the great catalogue of the Spencer Collection, published as the Bibliotheca Spenceriana (1814-15) in four volumes with three volumes of supplements appearing in 1822-23. In the rather charming "Address" which serves as the introduction, Dibdin asks for corrections to be pointed out to him "over a home-cook'd beaf-steak, lightly sprinkled with snow-white horse-radish, and flanked with the best lettuce my garden can bestow." A fine and lovely copy. Armorial bookplate, apparently of the Eliot family (their motto: "Credunt quod vident"), and the leather bookplate of Howard Lehman Goodhart, one of Dr. Rosenbach's good clients and father of Phyllis Goodhart Gordan. ?         A Catalogue of Books, in the Various Branches of Literature, which Lately formed the Library of a Distinguished Collector;

      - and were Sold by Auction by Mr. Jeffery, of Pall Mall: with their Prices, and Purchasers' Names. 2 p.l., 384 pp. Tall 8vo, cont. marbled boards (carefully rebacked & recornered in sheep), flat spine gilt, uncut. London: P. Martin, 1811. The interest aroused by the Heath sale, which took place in April and May of 1810, appears to have been so widespread that the publishers felt justified in republishing the sale catalogue later in 1810, together with the prices realized and the buyers names. They added twenty-two lots, Nos. 4787-4809, which had not appeared in the original catalogue, but were obviously offered at the end of the sale. According to Fletcher, perhaps only 250 copies of the republished catalogue were printed. Due to continued great demand, a new edition of the enlarged second catalogue was prepared in 1811, with a different printer and publisher. Our copy of this new edition is a fine uncut copy, printed on special fine paper, with the printed names of the buyers and prices and the additional lots. It is rare. Benjamin Heath (1704-66), classical scholar and book collector, "was a collector of rare books from the age of thirteen, and in his lifetime distributed his library between two of his sons, but still left a large collection. There was printed in 1810 a 'Catalogue'. Heath was the principal collector of this library, but it was augmented by his son, the Rev. Benjamin Heath."-D.N.B., IX, pp. 339-40. The sale, which provoked Dibdin to paroxysms of enthusiasm (see his Bibliomania, 1811), realized 8,899 pounds. But its contents no longer belonged to Heath: he had sold it for 3,000 pounds to two booksellers, Cuthell and Martin, who then, at a huge profit, had them auctioned by Jeffrey. Heber was the chief buyer at this sale. Fine and handsome copy from the library of A.R.A. Hobson with bookplate. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Catalogue des Livres de la Bibliothèque de feu M. J.B.G. Haillet de Couronne, Ancien Lieutenant-Général Criminel au Baillage de Rouen, Secrétarie perpétuel honoraire de l'Académie des Sciences, Belles-Lettres et Arts de la même Ville, Membre de l'Académie des Belles-Lettres de Caen, etc.

      xvii, 311 pp. 8vo, cont. blue straight-grained half-morocco & paste-paper boards (upper joint a little wormed). ? Grolier Club, Printed Catalogues of French Book Auctions...1643-1830, 515. Horne, p. 708-"As M. Haillet not only possessed great taste for bibliography, but was also well skilled in that science; the class of literary history is the most numerous, and most of the works were illustrated by his notes.".

Quarto, contemporary full paneled calf sympathetically rebacked in calf-gilt, red morocco spine label. raised bands. $2850.Early 19th-century quarto edition of the Bible in Arabic, printed for distribution by British evangelists in Africa and Asia, in attractive contemporary paneled calf."This edition, produced under the patronage of the Bishop of Durham (Shute Barrington), was at first undertaken by Joseph Dacre Carlyle (1759-1806), Cambridge Professor of Arabic in 1795, and vicar of Newcastle in 1801.         The Weekly Register; Niles? Weekly Register, Niles? National Register. A Complete Run in 76 volumes.

      Baltimore, Washington, DC, Philadelphia, 1811-1849. Philadelphia, 1811-1849. 76 Volumes, [volume 76 in facsimile as published by Burt Franklin]. Index [1811-1817]. Complete with ALL addenda and supplements. Niles' Register was one of the great weekly magazines of the early nineteenth century with a national circulation comparable to today's Newsweek or Time. Hezekiah Niles founded the magazine in 1811 and served as its editor and publisher until 1836. He sought to bring a balanced perspective of national and world events to his readers. As a record of early nineteenth century American politics and economics, nothing compares to the over 30,000 pages of reprints of public documents, treaties, statistical data, articles on the War of 1812, the Mexican American War, the expansion of the nation, news from other newspapers, and a wealth of other information contained in Niles? Register. Thomas Jefferson wrote, "I have found it very valuable as a Repository of documents, original papers and the facts of the day, and the ease with which the index enables us to turn to them." The Register was mailed out every Saturday with one rare interruption in circulation during the War of 1812 "when all the employees 'one small boy excepted' were engaged in military duties" defending Baltimore. Niles? Register essentially ceased publication with the June 27th, 1849 issue. Three single issues of volume 76 were published in September of 1849, numbers 13, 14, and 15; numbers 1 to 12 apparently were never published. Of the 76 volumes, 22 are in their original bindings (quarter, half, there quarter, or full leather) and housed in custom clamshell boxes with brown cloth sides and paper labels on the backs; the remaining 53 volumes are re-cased in uniform brown cloth with paper spine labels. The facsimile volume consisting of three issues of volume 76 is bound in blue cloth with gilt titling on the spine. The leather bindings are in very good condition, and there is an occasional lightly inked page, and occasional foxing. Yes, you can find digital copies of Niles? Register online, but they do not equal the quality of type on paper in the bound volumes. Niles? Register is perhaps the most valuable resource for the history of early nineteenth century America. It is rarely found complete, and it took many years to acquire the volumes that create this set.

        Fascinating Nantucket whaler certificate of protection from Martha's Vineyard to the Pacific, used to prevent impressment, which led up to the War of 1812. The crew was mostly Free blacks and Indians, and was indeed captured by the British!

      Edgartown, Massachusetts, October 1, 1811. 9.25" x 7.25", 16" x 10". "Two page partially printed document, pages attached with a red wax in four locations along left edge, one wax attachment loose, three are firmly attached. Top page 9.25"" x 7.25"" and is the certificate for the ""Annexed paper"" filed in the office of Edgartown. Embossed seal of an Eagle and the statement ""Custom House Edgartown: Signed "" Tho(mas) Cooke Jr."", Collector. Identifies the ship as ""Ship Mary Anne"", where of ""George Russell Jr, is at prefent mafter"" (present master), with a list of the Seaman. Dated October 1, 1811. Verso blank. The second page is 16"" x 10"" with extensive manuscript with a full detailed list of the passengers by ""Name"", ""rank"" Place of Birth"", Residence"" ""Height"", ""Complexion"" and ""Age"". Verso is signed by ""Tho(mas) Cooke Jr., Coll"", with additional manuscript in Spanish along the bottom and signed.A Protection certificate document for the Nantucket ship, the Mary Ann, for passage from Edgartown, Martha's Vineyard to the Pacific Ocean. What makes Nantucket and Matha's Vineyard truly different is their past. For a relatively brief period during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, these islands of sand at the edge of the Atlantic was the whaling capital of the world and one of the wealthiest communities in America. However by 1760 the local Whale population was virtually exterminated By the time of this Historical certificate dated 1811, they had enlarged their whaling sloops and outfitted them with brick tryworks capable of processing the oil on the open ocean. Now, since it was no longer necessary to return to port as often to deliver bulky blubber, their fleet had a far greater range. By the advent of the American Revolution, Whaling vessels had reached the verge of the Arctic Circle, the west coast of Africa, the east coast of South America and the Falkland Islands to the south.This period of time bridged between the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812 also saw major political upheaval. By 1800 the British, bitter over the loss of the colonies just decades earlier, were interrupting our trade ships, confiscating our boats, pirating the contents and imprisoning the sailors aboard. The whaling boats were no exception and in response to impressment of American seaman by British ships, Congress passed an ""Act for the Relief and Protection of American Seamen"" in 1796. The Act required customs collectors to maintain a record of all United States citizens serving on United States vessels. Each seaman, once registered with the customs collector, was given a Seaman's Protection Certificate. This document is an example of such a certificate. These certificates vouched for the citizenship of the individual and included identifying information such as age, height, complexion, place of birth, and in some cases eye and hair color. The intention of these certificates was to discourage impressment.This large certificate is for the Whaling Ship ""Mary Ann of Nantucket"" … now bound from ""Edgartown for the Pacific Ocean"". The document is signed by ""Tho(mas) Cooke Jr. , Collector"" from Edgartown, and dated the October 1, 1811, and includes a list of 16 sailors, with one Captain, George Russel Jr, and a 1st and 2nd Mate, with the balance of the 12 crewman listed as ""Seaman"". Of interest are the ""Complexion"" of the crew. Nantucket had a large representation of blacks and ""Indians"" . Blacks, and a substantial number of whites nurtured a working relationship that recognized both racial differences and shared human characteristics. While the vast majority of American blacks languished under the pains and deprivations of slavery, many in Nantucket could pursue a livelihood and plan their futures as free people. The Nantucket Whaling industry had a historical tradition of black seamanship. However Black seamen were subject to being kidnaped and murdered on the high seas. Although the Atlantic slave trade had become unlawful in 1808, an illegal trade continued, which placed all black seamen in jeopardy. This Protection Certificate showed predominantly Black and Indian seaman described as ""African"",""Mullatto"", ""Dark"", ""Brown"", ""Black', ""Light"", ""Indian"" etc. As fate would have it, this Protection Certificate did not bode the Captain and crew well, as the Ship Mary Ann headed off to sea, sailing from October 1811 to about 1813, but was then seized by the British in the War of 1812. At least one of the crew, John Tuck was known to have died in 1813 at the age of 17. Often impressed seaman where tortured and abused to force compliance.As one studies the document, and becomes deeply entrenched into its history, the reader can not help but contemplate the possibility that any one of these men at a later date, could have ultimately been on board the Whaling boat with Absolum Boston, noted for being the first black Whaling Captain with an all black crew launched in 1820; or instead, have the unfortunate fate of being on board The Essex from the same time period, which was the infamous whaling vessel attacked and sank by a mighty sperm whale, later becoming the inspiration for Herman Melville's epic ""Moby Dick"".A wonderful large, important document with a fundamental accounting of history from the period leading up to the War of 1812. Provenance: The Barbara Johnson Collection of Books & Manuscripts on Whales, Whaling and Related Subjects."
