Mexico: Arizpe, 1811 and 1812. First edition. Small quarto, 269 pp with 1 engraving: two works with continuous pagination but separate title pages. Monte de las Cruces was the highwater mark of Hidalgo's revolt against the Spanish Viceregal regime: Mexico City lay before him, but against the judgement of Allende he withdrew and probably lost the golden opportunity to bring the revolution to victory. This sermon is obviously from the royalist side and occupies 59 pp of text. Of the remainder, a history of the image of Our Lady of Remedies, from its arrival in Mexico with the Conquistadores, Sabin quotes Stevens (presumably the Catalogue of American Books in the British Museum, 1866): "An extraordinary volume of considerable interest. According to the pious author, Our Lady of Mexico ... seems not only to have taken an active interest in the spiritual welfare of the faithful, but seems to have done her best to thwart the schemes of the rebels and republicans in the various provinces of Mexico. She set her face firmly against the spirit of Mexican independence, and became quite a politician, but always attached to the royal party. The pious political fraud s contained in this volume must ever give it a prominent place among the books relating to the history of the Mexican Revolution." The plate is a depiction of strange celestial portents that occurred during this time. Contemporary full calf binding, with gilt devices on covers and spine, gilt title and florons also on spine; original marbled endpapers. Very clean and nice copy in an excellent period binding.

Periodo marmorizzata.

Journal of a Tour in Iceland in The Summer of 1809 ["Not Published" (at foot of title)]

first editiontall 8vo.(iii)-lvii, 496, [6 (index)], [1 (errata & directions to binder)]pp., hand coloured frontispiece, 3 plates (of which 2 are folding), diagrams in text, sympathetic modern contemporary-style half mid-tan diced 'Russia', spine panelled by broad gilt rolled and highlighted raised bands, large gilt tool at panel centres and direct gilt lettered, old marbled paper on sides, The first book, in its uncommon first private issue, of one of the great nineteenth century botanists. Hooker (1785-1865), botanist, had an early interest in natural history which was encouraged by his father and as a youth he got to know the principal naturalists in native East Anglia including Sir James Edward Smith (1759-1828) owner of Linnaeus's herbarium and library, Dawson Turner (1775-1858) the banker and botanist, and Sir Joseph Banks (1743-1820), president of the Royal Society. "In 1805 Hooker made his first important botanical discovery when he found a species of moss not previously recorded in Britain ... He studied mainly mosses, liverworts, and ferns, and became an expert in a difficult group of liverworts, the Jungermanniae, on which in 1816 he published a monograph. On his election to the Linnean Society of London in 1806 Hooker felt committed to a life of botany ... [and] in 1809 he went to Iceland to make a botanical survey for Banks; his collections were lost in a fire at sea on the way home but with the aid of Banks's notes from his own journey there in 1772 Hooker was able to produce an account which was published in 1811. Sir James Smith named a new genus of mosses (Hookeria) after him." [O.D.N.B.] In 1812 he was elected F.R.S. and in 1820 was appointed Professor of Botany at Glasgow University. Having transformed the botany department he was then in 1841 was appointed the first full-time director of the Royal G ardens at Kew and under his leadership that institution expanded rapidly. He published widely on botanical subjects.

Erzählungen. 2 Teile in 1 Band. Titel, 342 S.; Titel, 240 S. Schöner Halblederbd im Stil d. Z. mit Rückenschild und Rückenvergoldung.

Berlin, Realschulbuchhandlung, 1810-1811. – Goed. VI 102, 7; Sembdner 7 und 12; Borst 1116. Paris, Imprimerie Royale, 1845.

1811. 16mo. 2 vols. 1 blank f, (2), CLXXX, 154 pp., 1 bl. f. 105, 202 pp. Printed blue wrappers. Editio princeps of the Arabic text, with French translation, of Sirafi's "Silsilat al-tawarikh", a commentary on an anonymous account of Arabic trade with China and India. In two books: the first said to be taken down from statements made by a merchant named Sulaiman, the second a continuation of the first, by Hasan. Appended to the Arabic text are extracts from the Maruj al-dahab and the Kitab Altanbih by Ma'sudi. - In 1718 the Abbé Renaudot, grandson of Theophraste Renaudot, published a volume entitled "Anciennes relations des Indes et de la Chine", by two Muslim travellers who visited the East in the 9th century AD - a French translation of a manuscript fragment which was part of Colbert's library. In 1811 the orientalist Louis-Mathieu Langlès set out to publish the original Arabic version, but death overtook him before he had time to accompany his edition with a preface or commentary, and the project remained unfinished in the Imprimerie Royale until Reinaud, professor of Arabic at the School of Oriental Languages, completed it with his own translation and numerous notes.         Autograph sketchleaf to op. 117, "König Stephan" ("Ungarns erster Wohltäter"). [Teplitz, 1811].

1811. 2 pages in ink and pencil on 16-stave paper (322 x 234 mm), with two folds. Formerly sewn on the left margin, leaving three punched holes. Accompanied by two autograph letters signed from Friedrich Wilhelm Künzel in Leipzig to Fred M. Steele of Chicago, dated July 16th, 1886, discussing the acquisition and certifying the authenticity of the present leaf. A densely-used two-sided autograph sketchleaf containing music to opus 117, "König Stephan" or "Ungarns erster Wohltäter" ("Hungary's first Benefactor"), the front showing, among other motifs, the opening cello/bassoon line for the beginning of the first movement chorus, "Ruhend von seinen Thaten" (Andante maestoso e con moto, C major), and the verso with material from the end of the movement, all over with various freely written passages in ink and pencil, mostly on single staves, some with text underneath, containing many holograph corrections and instances where ink is written over pencil. - The present sketchleaf, apparently hitherto unknown to scholarship, belongs to a book of sketches that Beethoven used while writing his stage music "König Stephan" in 1811. Beethoven created his own book from various paper on hand and used it while at the spa in Teplitz from late 1810 into mid 1811. He finished "König Stephan" between 20 August and mid-September 1811. The sketches are of the first chorus (after the overture). The musical play was commissioned for the opening of the new theatre in Pest along with "The Ruins of Athens". First performed on 9 February 1812, it was published as op. 117. King Stephen I founded Hungary in 1000. Emperor Francis I of Austria commissioned the new theatre, and Beethoven was chosed as the composer to honour the occasion of the opening. The Austrian Emperor was honouring Hungary's loyalty, thus the subject matter on a text by August von Kotzebue. - The Beethoven-Haus in Bonn holds four other sketches from this sketchbook (viewable in their digital online archive, as entries HCB Bsk 2/50, 3/51, 4/52, and Mh 81), all of which share the same three holes punched on the left-side margin of the present sketch. We would like to thank Dr. Carmelo Comberiati, professor of Music History at Manhattanville College, for his assistance in cataloguing this lot. - Provenance: Friedrich Wilhelm Künzel, Leipzig, before 1886; Collection of Fred M. Steele, Chicago, purchased from the above, 1886. Offered in the "Collection of Important Autographs in the estate of Mrs. Ella P. Steele, widow of Mr. Fred M. Steele" (Philadelphia, 1918). Acquired from the purchaser's descendants, last located in Greenwich, CT. For an in-depth discussion of the pages this sketch belongs to, cf.         Eigenh. Brief mit U. ("Hormayr"). Wien, 30. IX. 1811.

1811. 3 SS. auf Doppelblatt. 4to. [...]". - Beiliegend ein Schreiben (Innsbruck, 20. IX. 1780) im Auftrag Maria Theresias, einen Rechtsstreit betreffend, mitunterzeichnet von Hormayrs Vater, Josef Anton Hormayr zu Hortenburg (gest. Innsbruck 1803).

A Selection of the Most Interesting of Sir Robert Ainslie's Celebrated Collection of Views in Turkey in Europe, and in Asia. London, T. Bensley f. R. Bowyer, 1811.

1811. Folio (340 x 490 mm). 2 ff, 24 coloured aquatints (1 folding). Contemp. half calf with giltstamped red morocco label to marbled front cover, spine rebacked and gilt. "The plates in this selection are not re-engraved, but plates available from the stock originally printed for Bowyer, with new title page" (Atabey). He was a close friend of Sir Robert Ainslie, British ambassador to Turkey between 1776 and 1792, and the bulk of his paintings and drawings during this period were commissioned by him. Mayer travelled extensively throughout the Ottoman Empire and became well known for his sketches and paintings of panoramic landscapes of ancient sites from the Balkans to Turkey and Egypt, particularly ancient monuments and the Nile. Many of the works were amassed in Ainslie's collection, which was later presented to the British Museum, providing a valuable insight into the Middle East of that period. - Occasional insignificant brownstaining.         [Sexology handbook]. [Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India], 1811.

1811. Manuscript in Persian, written in black ink with frequent words in red, with each page in a frame of (outside to inside) blue, gold and red rules (the gold wider) with an outer frame of gold rules near the edges, the opening of the text elaborately decorated with flowers, vines and abstract forms in blue, lavender, green, orange, white, gold and bronze, and 29 original erotic illustrations (2 full-page, 27 half-page) in numerous colours of gouache and with extensive use of gold and some silver. Contemporary black calf, resewn on 2 green cloth tapes, each board with an embossed gilt paper inlay (18.5 x 9 cm) embossed with arabesque plant decoration in a decorative border, surrounded by 9 smaller embossed gilt paper inlays forming a frame, with green double rules bordering the inlays and green linear decorations connecting the inlays in the frame, gold-tooled spine, gold-tooled brown calf paste-downs. With tissue guard leaves between most pairs of facing pages. A rare example of an early 19th-century north-Indian sexology handbook, beautifully and extensively illustrated. It was commissioned by Saadat Ali Khan II (ca. 1752-1814), 5th Nawab of the princely state of Awadh (officially called Oudh by the British Raj) and written by his personal physician (hakim), possibly Ali Sharif, who had been hakim to the Nawabs before and after Saadat's reign. The illustrations (7.5 x 9 and 14.5 x 9 cm) were made by the official royal painter, who has not been identified (several Indian artists who worked for Saadat Ali Khan II are recorded by name). The manuscript is divided into 14 chapters including those on development of male sexuality, development of female sexuality; things to do before, during and after copulation; descriptions of 14 sexual positions (assan); medical compounds for erectile dysfunction; and information about the female orgasm. It illustrates one male homosexual couple and one lesbian couple. The men and women depicted are all Asian or Middle Eastern in appearance, some light-skinned and some dark-skinned, and they copulate in various combinations. Some of the men are depicted with grey skin, suggesting that they are devotees of the god Shiva, who smeared their bodies with ash as he did. Awadh under the Nawabs, straddling the present Indian-Nepalese border, was famous for its harmonious mixing of the Hindu religion and Islam (the Nawabs were Shi'ite). It was most opulent under the Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula, who reigned from 1775 (when he shifted the cultural centre from Faizabad to Lucknow) to his death in 1797. He was a great patron of the arts, supporting both Indian and European artists and inaugurating an Awadh school that mixed elements of European and traditional Mughal styles. In other genres the European styles tended to dominate after his death, but the present erotic miniatures still follow the Awadh traditions, with European perspective in many of the backgrounds but sometimes also showing hierarchical prospective (one scene depicts a horse in the foreground much smaller than the erotic couple, and a tiger also smaller than natural size). The Awadh school of miniatures "gradually acquired a prominent place in the cultural history of India which no other province gained" providing a "glorious heritage ..., we should make efforts to preserve the rich cultural legacy of Awadh." (Awasthi, p. 102). - The manuscript collates: [A]-[B]8 [C]6 [D]-[H]8 [I]8(- I8) = 69 ll. and is written on laid paper with horizontal chainlines but no watermarks. One new endleaf has been inserted at the end. The decoration at the opening of the text (10.5 x 8.5 cm) was clearly taken from an earlier manuscript, for it is on a separate piece of paper mounted on a backing sheet and inserted where a piece of the leaf has been cut out for the purpose, and it has about three dozen tiny worm holes that do not continue in the backing sheet or the leaves before or after it. - The gutter folds of many leaves have been restored and the sewing is later than the binding. With some stains and worm holes, mostly in the gutter margin, and a few leaves with tattered edges, but generally in good condition and with the illustrations well preserved. The binding is loose, with 1 leaf detached, and slightly rubbed, with a few small parts of the gilt paper scuffed. A beautifully and extensively illustrated north-Indian sex manual, with a very topical mixture of ethnic backgrounds and sexual orientations. 69 ll.

Kjobenhavn [Copenhagen]: Trykt pa Hofboghandler Schubothes Forlag, hos J. R. Thiele,, 1811. Small octavo. Contemporary sheep-backed marbled boards, spine in compartments with gilt rules, gilt-lettered tan title label. Interleaved. Ownership inscription "1814 af C.G.B." and "S. Hylander 1820" to front pastedown. Superficially starting at joints but on the whole the binding very sound, rubbing to extremities, small chip to title label, internally tanned and spotted in plates, still a very good copy indeed. First edition, a rare interleaved copy owned by Swedish philologist Sven Hylander (1797-1825) with his comments and additions to the work. Hylander was lecturer at the University of Lund and studied Icelandic manuscripts. The famous Swedish poet Esaias Tegner, who was a lecturer in Greek at Lund, wrote an elegy for Hylander on his early death in 1825, the same year as Tegner published his epic Icelandic-inspired poem Frithjof's Saga to broad international acclaim. Rask's "'Guide to the Icelandic or old Nordic Language' was the first of an important series of publications which qualify Rask as one of the founder of the modern science of language. The interest that his writings aroused in the ancient Scandinavian tongues directed attention to their literature. he was the first to study the ancient Nordic languages systematically." (PMM) This copy, interleaved and annotated by a next-generation scholar in the same field, makes for a compelling emblem of Rask's influence.

        Sexology handbook].

[Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India], 1811. - Manuscript in Persian, written in black ink with frequent words in red, with each page in a frame of (outside to inside) blue, gold and red rules (the gold wider) with an outer frame of gold rules near the edges, the opening of the text elaborately decorated with flowers, vines and abstract forms in blue, lavender, green, orange, white, gold and bronze, and 29 original erotic illustrations (2 full-page, 27 half-page) in numerous colours of gouache and with extensive use of gold and some silver. The Awadh school of miniatures "gradually acquired a prominent place in the cultural history of India which no other province gained" providing a "glorious heritage ., we should make efforts to preserve the rich cultural legacy of Awadh." (Awasthi, p. - The gutter folds of many leaves have been restored and the sewing is later than [Attributes: Hard Cover]

XXIV, S. 439.
