Essys on the Nature and Principles of Taste. In two volumes

Edinburgh- Bell and Bradfute and Archibald Constable and Co, 1811. Edinburgh- Bell and Bradfute and Archibald Constable and Co, 1811 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Two wonderful essays from the passionate pen of Alison, these essays being major theoretical works of the Edinburgh enlightenment. Includes: Essay 1: of the nature of the emotions of sublimity and beauty, and Essay 2: of the sublimity and beauty of the material world. Armorial bookplates to front pastedowns. Sir Archibald Alison, first baronet (17921867) was a historian and lawyer. Alison declared it his life's work to oppose the erroneous opinions which, since the French Revolution and in consequence of it, had, as I conceived, overspread the world, in political, economical and social concerns. It was through the gloomy foreboding with which he greeted all suggestion of constitutional change in Britain that he first came to public notice. On seeing that this was what the whigs intended, he made his name with a series of thirteen articles in Blackwood's, from January 1831 to January 1832 which, inevitably, linked parliamentary reform with the French revolution of 1830. Alison elaborated these sombre theses in the ten volumes of his History of Europe during the French Revolution (183342). The central failure he identified in the France of the ancien rgime, as in present-day Britain, was the ruling class's reluctance to stand up to popular intimidation. Britain might have been spared the fate of France, but had no grounds for confidence in the future: whig ministries were practically treasonable, and 1832 heralded an era of democracy and the descent into anarchy. Despite the heavy political baggage, his work offered the first survey of the revolution in English, and several editions won huge sales on both sides of the Atlantic, with translations into French, German, and even Arabic. DNBCondition: In full marbled calf bindings. Externally attractive although a trifle rubbed, joints cracked. Internally, firmly bound. Bright and generally clean aside from some light scattered spotting. Mild off-setting from the text to adjacent pages. Overall: GOOD.

        A Tale of A Tub

London - Thomas Tegg, 1811. London - Thomas Tegg, 1811 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A smart copy of Jonathan Swift's first and most challenging satire. With seven hand-coloured plates. The Tale is a prose parody which is divided into sections of digression and a tale of three brothers, each representing one of the main branches of western Christianity. At the time it was written, politics and religion were still linked very closely in England, and the religious and political aspects of the satire can often hardly be separated. The work made Swift notorious, and was widely misunderstood, especially by Queen Anne herself who mistook its purpose for profanity. It effectively disbarred its author from proper preferment within the church, but is considered one of Swift's best allegories, even by himself. It was enormously popular, but Swift believed it damaged his prospect of advancement in the Church of England. Condition: Rebound in a half-calf binding with marbled baords. Externally very smart, with just some minor shelfwear. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright, with just some scattered instances of light foxing throughout and some offsetting from the plates. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED..

[PARTIALLY PRINTED DOCUMENT, COMPLETED IN MANUSCRIPT, AFFIRMING THE FREEDOM AND NEW YORK CITY RESIDENCY OF A FREE AFRICAN-AMERICAN BORN AT MOUNT VERNON DURING GEORGE WASHINGTON'S LIFETIME]

[New York]. April 24, 1811.. [New York]. April 24, 1811.. 6 x 7 3/4 inches. Old horizontal fold, separated and repaired with tissue. Minor wear else. Very good. A fascinating partially printed document, completed in manuscript, attesting that one James Grant has known the "black" man Norman Washington for the past three years, and that he is indeed a free man and not a slave. It also attests that Washington is 27 years old, was born at "Mount Vernon in the State of Virginia," and was born free. It is signed by Grant and Charles Dickinson, a city alderman. When George Washington died in 1799, 317 slaves lived at Mount Vernon. Some, Washington owned outright through either inheritance or purchase, others were the dowry property of Martha Washington, and still others were slaves which Washington had rented from other owners. Many of the slaves had intermarried and had children over the years. In his will, Washington made provisions to free the slaves he owned upon Martha's death; she, in turn, chose to free them early, uneasy to live around so many people who were waiting on her demise. Besides the slaves, a number of free African- Americans also lived and worked on Washington's extensive plantations. Norman Washington was born in 1784, during the period when Washington lived at Mount Vernon as a private citizen between his resignation as commander-in- chief of the Army in late December, 1783 and becoming President in April, 1789. He does not appear among the slaves listed in Washington's will because, as the affidavit asserts, he was born free. There are records at Mount Vernon showing that there were "free blacks who worked for the Washington family during the 18th century." In all likelihood he was the son of a free black woman who gave him the last name of her employer, as often happened. His free status would have certainly been recognized at home, but once he moved from Mount Vernon a new set of considerations would have arisen. In 1785, the New York Assembly began considering ways to abolish slavery. Some representatives, including Aaron Burr, favored immediate emancipation, while another faction supported gradual emancipation. After failing to pass any legislation in the 1780s due to disagreements over the issue, the New York Legislature passed "An Act for the Gradual Abolition of Slavery" in 1799, with no conditions on voting rights. The act provided freedom for children born to slave mothers after July 4, 1799. Men born into slavery prior to that were to be freed at age 28, and women at age 25. Slave owners could thus continue to exploit a slave's most productive years well into the 19th century. Moreover, kidnappings and illegal trading allowed New York owners to dispense with their human property even after the law took effect. In theory, all slaves should have become free by July, 4, 1827. The lag between the 1799 law and 1827 created a growing population of free blacks in New York, and on Jan. 29, 1811, the state legislature passed another law, an "Act to prevent frauds and perjuries at elections, and to prevent slaves from voting." In order to vote, African Americans needed to provide a certificate that proved they were free, which could be obtained by presenting themselves to any "justices of the supreme court, any mayor, recorder, or judge of any court of common pleas" and paying the 25-cent fee. The present document is the sworn affidavit of James Grant, stating that (with the manuscript portions in brackets): "he has for [three] years last past, the said [Norman Washington] a [black] man, that the said [Norman] resides in the said city, that he is about the age of [twenty seven] years, and was born at [Mount Vernon] in [the state of Virginia] as this deponent is informed and verily believes, that during all the said time whilst this deponent has been acquainted with the said [Norman] as aforesaid, the said [Norman] hath been reputed and considered to be free, and hath continually acted as a freeman during the said time, an that the said [Norman was born] free as this deponent is also informed and believes. There is only one James Grant in New York directories of the period, a grocer who lived at 58 Roosevelt St., an address that no longer exists in Manhattan. Norman Washington is more elusive; the 1809 Longworth Directory lists a Washington without a first name at 7 Little Water St., a marginal address near the docks (also no longer in existence). However, Longworth does not seem to have covered the African American community closely. We can speculate that Washington worked for Grant, who was thus willing to vouch for him. Nothing further can be established about Norman Washington at this time. A fascinating starting point for understanding the life of African Americans who came from Mount Vernon or were associated with George Washington.

Cary's New Universal Atlas. 1811. - Copper engraving. Original colour. Size: 51.5 x 46 cm. (20½ x 18 inches) Very good condition, some offset, a little browning to centrefold. A fine map of Ireland, as its title suggests, divided into provinces and counties. John Cary was considered 'the most representative, able and prolific of English cartographers'. When the Ordnance Survey began accurately mapping the UK, they used John Cary's style as the basis for their work.

The legislative works in Austria were mainly the creation of Franz von Zeiller (1753-1828). Zeiller was taught natural law by Martini in Vienna, whose successor he became in 1783. Unlike the Bavarian and Prussian codification, Immanuel Kant's ideas influenced this code of laws already. However, Wolff's influence is to be felt in matters of systematics. Thus the 1.502 paragraphs are structered as follows: I. Civil Law. II. Law of things 1. property, ownership, distraint and pledge, servitude, legacy, 2. contracts, marital contracts, liability for damages. III. Common regulations 1. Substantiations of the rights and obligations. 2. Ammendment of the righst and obligations. 3. Annulation of the rights and obligations 4. Prescriptibility and usucaption.

(Zitat)

Light tanning and foxing. Very good. In an elaborate green half morocco slipcase. This is the first edition, and an edition in French did not appear until 1817. In his preface the author states that he wrote this work, in which he extols the superiority of the republican constitution of America over that of England, during his residence in America and, more important, that he wrote it for Americans, albeit in his native language for lack of sufficient skill in English. It also contains considerable discussion of economic policy. Thomas Jefferson revised the translation of the work from the French, and forwarded it on to the printer, William Duane. COHEN 7817.
