THE HISTORY OF LITTLE FANNY, Exemplified in a Series of Figures

London: S. and J. Fuller, 1810. Pp. [2], 15, [1], [2].Fifteen numbered pages of rhyming text, verso of final page blank, both front and rear original blanks present. Illustrated by accompanying hand-painted printed card doll figures; there are seven outfits; and a head (there are no removable hats in this copy - see note below). The book and figures are housed in a contemporary vellum slipcase with the title "Little Fanny" in manuscript to the front panel. The card wrappers of the book are in remarkably good condition, internally the book is very good, a little reading wear and minimal staining to the edges of a few pages, the original ribbon is not present, the figures are in very good bright condition, the top part of a dolls head being carried by Fanny is missing in one figure and the same figure has had a small part of the base replaced in hand-drawn facsimile with hand colouring (not recent). Overall a very good first edition copy. (Bibliographical note: we also have an 1811 (seventh edition) of this work and it has been useful to compare directly the two editions. It is interesting to note that whilst the figures are ostensibly the same the printing of them is quite different - the later edition is bolder with additional lines engraved; additionally the way the outline of the figures have been cut out differs too. One might suspect that the number of additional items such as hats etc. differed too between editions - and what the publisher had available at any one time.). First Edition. Card Covers. Very Good. 16mo.

THE FEMALE MEDICAL REPOSITORY. TO WHICH IS ADDED, A TREATISE ON THE PRIMARY DISEASES OF INFANTS: ADAPTED TO THE USE OF THE FEMALE PRACTITIONERS AND INTELLIGENT MOTHERS; THE TECHNICAL TERMS ARE EXPLAINED, AND AN ATTEMPT HATH BEEN MADE TO REDUCE THESE BRANCHES OF "THE HEALING ART," TO CONCISENESS AND PERSPICUITY

Baltimore [Md.]: Hunter & Robinson, 1810. First Edition. Hardcover. Moderate to heavy foxing, some staining to upper half of pages toward the end; binding Fine. Overall Very Good. Duodecimo (3-3/4" x 6-1/4") bound in full calf leather recently and sympathetically rebacked retaining the original morocco spine label; 252 pages. Complete but for the rear endpaper. An Annotated Catalogue of the Edward C. Atwater Collection of American Popular Medicine and Health Reform: "Brevitt provides chapters on the anatomies of the female pelvis, the fetal head and the female organs of generation; menstruation and its disorders; diseases of the female genitalia; pregnancy and its disorders; 'practical midwifery' (including praeturnatural labors, the use of forceps and caesarian section); the puerperium; and the diseases of infants," as well as postnatal care of infants. Brevitt also presents strategies for abortion, despite his footnote: “I feel constrained to note here the horrid depravity of human weakness, in wretches lost to every sense of religion, morality, and that mutual attachment from a mother to her offspring, and every tender tie in nature, seek the means to procure abortion: nor are there wanting in the other sex, infernals wicked enough to aid their endeavours" (page 117n). One of the methods suggested is “electricity” which would “restore discharge,” an idea that would be picked up by later nineteenth century entrepreneurs who developed several contraptions designed to help “obstructed” women.         The Duty and Authority of Justices of the Peace, in the State of

1810. Haywood, John [1762-1826], Compiler. The Duty and Authority of Justices of the Peace, In the State of Tennessee. Nashville: Printed and Sold by Thomas G. Bradford, 1810. [iv], 372, [7] pp. An additional four leaves, all containing advertisements, not present in this copy. Octavo (7" x 4-1/2"). Recent period-style calf, gilt rules and lettering piece to spine, hinges mended. Some toning and faint dampspotting to text, several printing faults resulting in torn leaves near the gutter, typical with early frontier imprints. Two later owner signatures to front pastedown, interior otherwise clean. * First edition. The first JP manual printed in Tennessee. With its choice of topics and rather amateurish printing, this manual evokes the state of frontier life in the early nineteenth century. Haywood was a jurist and historian from North Carolina who moved to Tennessee in 1807. Soon after his arrival he enhanced his already solid reputation by publishing a series of legal compilations and the earliest important histories of his adopted state. He served on the Tennessee Supreme Court for the last 12 years of his life. Other editions of his manual were published in 1811 and 1816. Though all editions are somewhat common in institutional collections, there are few copies of any edition in law libraries. Regarding the first edition, OCLC locates 4 copies (at Harvard, the Universities of Michigan and Minnesota and Yale). Also, no copy has appeared at auction in more than 30 years.         Lough Dochart, Western Highlands, Scotland

London: published by F.J. Sargent, 6 August 1810. Hand-coloured aquatint engraving by F.J. Sargent after J. Walmsley, backed onto early card mount. 19 1/4 x 25 3/4 inches. 28 3/4 x 22 1/2 inches. A highly atmospheric and lyrical view of `a place of retirement and peace' (Dorothy Wordsworth) Firmly in the 'picturesque' school of painters, Walmsley here shows an early summer morning on Loch Dochart, in Perthshire, Scotland: two travellers make an early start and the mist is still to be burnt off the waters by the newly risen sun, to the right the ruins of a castle are given a romantic air by the surrounding vegetation and the strongly- shadowed morning light. The Loch lies at the western end of Glen Lochart, a mile to the east of Crianlarich and in the shadow of Ben More.

        History of Greece

1810 - London - T. Cadell, 1795 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A complete set of Mitford's History of Greece. William Mitford (10 February 1744 10 February 1827) was anEnglish historian. Mitford as encouraged by French scholars whom he met in Paris, Avignon and Nice to give himself systematically to the study of Greek history. But it was Edward Gibbon, with whom he was closely associated when they both were officers in the South Hampshire Militia, who suggested to Mitford the form which his work should take. In 1784 the first of the volumes of his History of Greece appeared, and the fifth and last of these quartos was published in 1810, after which the state of Mitford's eyesight and other physical infirmities, including a loss of memory, forbade his continuation of the enterprise, although he painfully revised successive new editionsIn addition to his History of Greece, he published a few smaller works, the most important of which was an Essay on the Harmony of Language, 1774. The style of Mitford is natural and lucid, but without the rich colour of Gibbon. He affected some oddities both of language and of orthography, for which he was censured and which he endeavoured to revise. Volumes 1 to 6 are numerated to the spines with arabic numerals, 7 to 10 with roman. These earlier volumes (dated 1795 to 1797) are stated to be third editions to the title pages. The rest bear no record of an edition. With the ink inscription of one Anne Macbeth to the title page of each volume. Complete in 10 volumes. Condition: Uniformly bound in half calf over marbled boards. Externally, generally smart with light wear to extremities and joints only. backstrips of older volumes worn in places with some loss to head and tails. One board detached, 10 hinges held by cords only, three tender and one strained. Internally, firmly bound. Light spotting throughout, heaviest to first and last few pages. Evidence of past worming to volume 4. Otherwise clean. Overall: GOOD with some earlier volumes GOOD ONLY due to hinges or lack thereof..

Ta Tsing Leu Lee; being the Fundamental Laws, and a Selection from the Supplementary Statutes of the Penal Code of China

London: T. Cadell and W. Davies,, 1810. Originally printed and published in Pekin ... Translated from the Chinese and Accompanied with an Appendix, consisting of Authentic Documents, and a Few Occasional Notes, Illustrative of the Subject of the Work ... Quarto (310 × 245 mm) Contemporary diced russia, rebacked, title gilt to the spine, flat bands with gilt fleurons, lozenges in blind to the compartments, wide gilt palmette rolled panel to the boards, all edges gilt, foliate roll, gilt, to the turn-ins, drab endpapers. Engraved frontispiece of title page of the most recent Chinese edition, 1805. A little rubbed at the extremities, hinges strengthened with linen, foxing to the first blank, frontispiece and title page, with off-setting from the frontispiece quite heavily to both the previous blank and the title page, otherwise just light toning and the occasional spot of pale foxing, a very good, wide-margined copy. First edition. The first Chinese book directly translated into English, and a key contribution to the understanding of Chinese culture; "a watershed in modern Sinology in particular and modern Orientalism in general, not simply because it was the first English translation directly from a Chinese text, but more because it signalled a fresh point of departure for Westerners to decode and essentialize Chinese law and society in a far more professionally "authoritative" and systematic fashion" (Chen, Law as the Decoding Machine and Cultural Translation for Colonial Control: Staunton's Ta Tsing Leu Lee and Its Historical Legacy). Staunton had been educated at home in line with his father's "peculiar educational notions ... [living] entirely in adult society, developing precocious abilities at languages and natural history" (ODNB). He studied Chinese when accompanying his father on Lord Macartney's mission to China, "Staunton, who was nominally a page to the ambassador, was able to write Chinese characters, and was the only member of the embassy who could speak Chinese to the emperor". He became a writer at the East India Company's Canton factory in 1798, advancing to supercargo in 1804 and chief interpreter in 1808, and in 1816 he accompanied Amherst's ill-fated embassy to Peking as the factory chief, after which he returned to Britain; "Having accomplished my favourite object, of revisiting Pekin in a diplomatic capacity; and, having accumulated a competent fortune in addition to my patrimonial inheritance ... I rejoiced to find myself able to terminate the period of my banishment, at the early age of six-and-thirty". He was MP for various constituencies between 1818 and 1852, he was nominated to the East India Committee (1830) and Tea Duties Committee (1834) of the House of Commons, supported Ashley's motion against the opium trade in 1843, and spoke frequently on colonial issues. A Fellow of the Royal Society, sometime foreign secretary of the Royal Academy, vice-president of the British Association of Science, in 1823 he was a founder of the Royal Asiatic Society, to which he presented his collection of 3000 Chinese books. He died in 1859. This copy with the bookplate of Harriot, Duchess of St. Albans' Stratton Street library, William Beauclerk, the 9th Duke, was a prominent contributor to the Oriental Translation Fund.

        Bewaffneter Tiroler. Aquarell.

ca. 1810 - 13 x 11, 5 cm, 25 x 22 cm, Passepartout m. blattvergoldeten Rahmen., Tadell.

        CORNELIA AND ALCESTIS: TWO OPERAS

London: Printed for T. Payne, 1810. FIRST EDITION. Hardcover. Early 19th Century Libretti Based on Greek Tragedies,The Artful Painted Scene by the Dover Painter, ca. 1930. 194 x 124 mm (7 5/8 x 4 7/8"). 2 p.l., lxxxvii, [i], 188 pp. FIRST EDITION. Harmless contemporary purple straight-grain morocco, covers with gilt fillet border, raised bands flanked by plain gilt rules, gilt titling, all edges gilt. WITH AN EXCELLENT LATER FORE-EDGE PAINTING OF THE ACROPOLIS. Joints somewhat rubbed and flaked, boards a little stained and rather faded, rear board with two small abraded patches, otherwise an excellent copy, clean and fresh internally, in a solid, inoffensive binding, and with a vividly colored painting in fine condition. These two librettos are based on Euripides' tragedies "Medea" and "Alcestis." "Cornelia" transports the story of Medea's revenge on her faithless husband to Roman Britain, while Alcestis' story of self-sacrifice and redemption retains its original setting and cast of characters. The fore-edge painting salutes the classical origins of the operas with a striking depiction of the Acropolis, rising majestically on its hill, surrounded by open countryside with blue mountains in the distance. The foreground is populated by two tourists, sitting on a rock admiring the view, and four brightly dressed Greek peasants. Our view shows a sophisticated sense of design as well as a delicacy of painterly strokes, and the whole scene looks very convincing. The intricate gradations in the shading, seen especially in the fields and sky, are remarkable, and the highly skilled use of shadows establishes a strong sense of three-dimensionality. There is a great deal to see in terms of activity, landscape, and architecture, and all of it is painted in careful, convincing detail. It is easy to recognize the work of the so-called "Dover Painter," as it shows his distinctive style of applying small dabs of paint; this method is especially effective in producing convincing texture for skies, trees, shrubs, and grass. "Dover Painter" is the name given by Jeff Weber to the person who painted in the 1920s and '30s, probably for the famous London bookseller Marks & Company. British writer James Mason (1778/9-1827) wrote political pamphlets advocating parliamentary reform and Catholic emancipation, as well as several plays, an epistolary novel, and translations from the classics.

Sprache: de Gewicht in Gramm: 2100
