[TWO PENCIL SKETCHES BY WILLIAM DANIELL, AFTER ARCHITECT GEORGE DANCE, SHOWING ARTISTS WILLIAM HODGES AND SAMUEL PEPYS COCKERELL]

[Np, but possibly London, 1809. Minor toning and soiling. Very good. Two pencil drawings by landscape painter and engraver William Daniell, after drawings by George Dance, possibly executed around the time of Daniell's engraving of the portraits for A COLLECTION OF PORTRAITS SKETCHED FROM THE LIFE SINCE THE YEAR 1793 BY GEORGE DANCE... (London, 1809- 14). Daniell (1769-1837) was an accomplished landscape artist, etcher, and engraver. He traveled with his uncle, renowned landscape painter Thomas Daniell, to India (1786-93), where he assisted his uncle and developed his own skills. He later produced many magnificent views of locales around the globe, particularly of India. In addition to his well-known landscape works, he engraved and published a series of portraits drawn by architect George Dance (1741-1825), some of which were published in a two-volume work in 1809-14. Late in his career Dance turned his hand to other art forms, including music and chalk profile portraits of friends and acquaintances. The two subjects depicted here are fellow artists: Samuel Pepys Cockerell was a fellow architect; and William Hodges was a painter, particularly noted for being the artist on Captain James Cook's second voyage. Each volume of the work published thirty-six portraits with descriptive text about the subject. William Hodges is depicted in the second volume. The engraved portrait faces right, while this sketch faces left, making it a mirror image for printing. The Yale Center for British Art holds not only the published work but also a volume of proof prints, each labeled in manuscript, with the manuscript title, "A Series of Portraits drawn by George Dance Esq. and Engraved by Wm. Daniell." This proof volume is comprised only of portraits, with no text, and includes a further eighty-five engravings beyond the seventy-two published by Daniell in 1809-14. This is particularly interesting in light of the fact that while the portrait of William Hodges appears in the published work, Samuel Pepys Cockerell does not - though he is among the proof prints. Since Dance's original drawings were done in chalk, which is a much looser medium than line-engraving, it is possible that Daniell created these drawings to provide himself with a more defined and delineated image from which to create his engraving. These drawings therefore provided an interesting and important step in the engraving process.

[LETTER BOOK OF CRAWFORD CARTER, CONTAINING CORRESPONDENCE TO THE RHODE ISLAND MERCHANT FIRM MUNRO, SNOW & MUNRO, DURING HIS SOJOURNS IN THE WEST AND EAST INDIES]

[Various places, but primarily St. Thomas and Batavia], 1809. Quarto. Original marbled paper wrappers. Some wear at edges, spine lightly worn. Contents bright and clean, in a highly legible hand. Very good. In a cloth clamshell case, leather label. Letter book and journal of Crawford Carter, agent for the merchant firm of Munro, Snow & Munro. The first twenty- three leaves comprise the letter book, providing copies of correspondence from Carter in the West Indies to Messrs. Munro, Snow and Munro. The letters contain details of Carter's activities for the firm - trying to unload goods at various ports (mainly beef, pork, and nankins, but also coffee and sugar), the prices and quantities of said goods, and the general state of trade in the region. In addition to business news, Carter writes about a devastating fire on the island of St. Thomas: "Since I had the pleasure of writing you on the 25th, this town has been destroyed by a dreadfull fire which commensed about half past seven oclock on the evening of the 22nd, and owing to the inability of the inhabitants to stop it, continued to rage until about 5 oclock the next morning when fortunately the wind shifted and carried the flames out of the direction of the few houses that remained. About fifteen hundred dwelling houses and stores were burnt: it is impossible to make any near calculation respecting the amount of merchandize and furniture destroyed; those who are good judges suppose about six millions of dollars; the town was never known to contain so many valuable goods as there was in it at the time of the fire." He goes on to detail losses to the company, which he considered minor, adding "We were the most fortunate vessel in the harbour." The second half of the volume, nineteen leaves, is written dos-a-dos style. It contains "Copy of a Malay grammar, made at Batavia by an American gentleman during his stay there," "Journal of the Voyage from Providence toward Rio Janeiro in the Ship George & Mary," and several pages of "memorandums" concerning cargo loaded onto the George & Mary, including "10 Large Cases Gin." A note preceding the grammar reads: "'The Malay language, although uncommonly soft, is not possessed of that stressing of metaphor for which most of the languages of the East are so justly famed.' James Harrison M.D., author of a Malay & English grammar published at London 1801." A search for such a work in OCLC proved unfruitful. Also laid into the volume is a single bifolium sheet, docketed as "Papers relating to a loss on Brig Torno. - Settled June 27, 1826." Dated January 4, 1826, the document details damage to the Brig Torno, belonging to Israel Snow, which occurred due to heavy seas while anchored at Gibraltar Bay. The ship was repaired, and this document is testimony to the fact that the ship was damaged by weather and not due to any carelessness on the part of the owners. It has been notarized by Henry Stokes, Notary Public of Gibraltar, and affirmed by Bernard Henry, U.S. Consul at Gibraltar, presumably as a means of collecting insurance to cover the damages and repairs. An interesting manuscript volume, detailing American business transactions in the West Indies.

THE TRAVELS OF CAPTS. LEWIS & CLARKE [sic], BY ORDER OF THE GOVERNMENT OF THE UNITED STATES, PERFORMED IN THE YEARS 1804, 1805, & 1806, BEING UPWARDS OF THREE THOUSAND MILES, FROM ST. LOUIS, BY WAY OF THE MISSOURI, AND COLUMBIA RIVERS, TO THE PACIFICK OCEAN: CONTAINING AN ACCOUNT OF THE INDIAN TRIBES, WHO INHABIT THE WESTERN PART OF THE CONTINENT UNEXPLORED, AND UNKNOWN BEFORE

Philadelphia, 1809. Five engraved plates. Antique half calf and paper boards, leather label. Slight paper loss in margin of final four leaves, not affecting text, else very good. First edition of the so-called "Apocrypha edition" of Lewis and Clark. In response to the growing curiosity of the public regarding the findings of Lewis and Clark and the delay in publication of the "authorized account" of their expedition, this compilation of bits and pieces from already published works appeared (culled from Gass, Clark, Mackenzie, Carver, and Jefferson's MESSAGE... of 1806), misleading the reader into believing it was the account sanctioned by the government and containing all the information gathered during the journey. Despite its hodgepodge nature, it provided most of the world with its first detailed account of the Lewis and Clark expedition. It further contains five plates, purporting to be of western Indians. One of these is knocked off from the frontispiece of Bartram's TRAVELS...; the others have no earlier appearance that we can trace. The present copy lacks the incredibly rare folding map, which Wheat notes as "the earliest published map with legends stemming from Lewis and Clark." Howes calls this the "counterfeit" edition, and Sabin states that, according to Paltsits, it is "the earliest edition of an unauthorized 'counterfeit' account...." Robert Becker (in Wagner-Camp) incorrectly cites the London map as accompanying this edition. This first Philadelphia edition is quite rare, and is almost invariably found in terrible condition, almost always without the map.

ALS from Keswick, Dec. 5, 1809, to Ebenezer Elliott, "The Corn Law Rhymer".

1809 62 lines over three sides of folded quarto leaf, with integral address; several old, unobtrusive folds, one small tear at inner margin repaired with archival tape, damp stain in upper inner margin, sl. affecting text.An extensive letter in which Southey writes to Elliott in response to a request for advice on his poetic endeavours. The senior poet has evidently been sent a manuscript by Elliott, and informs him it will be returned 'by coach (as a cheaper conveyance than the post from hence) ... [with] a copy of my best poem by way of ballast, just to give your papers bulk enough for security'. Southey discusses the content of the manuscript, informing Elliott 'Your plan obviates many of the faults in the Soldier's Love & adds to it some striking things'. He advises, however, that Elliott 'lay this poem by, for experience has taught me that in literary architecture it is better to build anew than to alter & repair upon an old foundation'. The subject of the poem is one that interests him, and even seems to have been one that he considered utilising himself, though a word with a sage head eventually convinced him otherwise: 'I have talked upon that story with Wordsworth, but the difficulties appeared to outweigh the advantages, splendid as they are at first sight.' As an alternative topic, Southey advises that Elliott consult Sharon Turner's

[FRAMED COLLECTION OF FIVE PROFILE PORTRAITS]

[Various places, including New York, Philadelphia, & Richmond, 1809. Four images are circular, with a diameter of approximately 2 1/4 inches; one image is oval and approximately 2 1/2 x 2 inches. Matting overleaf black with gold trim around each image. Gilt wood frame, 12 x 9 3/4 inches. Engravings in fine condition. A framed collection of five profile portrait engravings by Charles B.J.F. de Saint-Mémin. The engravings span nearly the entire course of Saint-Mémin's celebrated career as a portraitist in the U.S., represent at least three of the locations where he worked, and reflect an impressive range of portrait types, from the profile of a young girl to that of a founding father in middle age. Charles Balthazar Julien Févret de Saint-Mémin was a young, aristocratic military officer when he fled France during the Revolution in 1790. In 1793 he arrived in New York with his father and soon began pursuing a career in the arts. Applying early training he had received in drawing and an eye for precision, Saint-Mémin quickly taught himself the techniques of engraving and printing, and began producing plans and landscapes of New York. In 1796 he co-founded a business creating profile portraits with the aid of a physiognotrace, a recently invented drafting device that allowed portraitists to capture their sitters' profiles with extreme accuracy. After tracing a subject's profile with the physiognotrace, Saint-Mémin would complete a portrait in chalk, reduce and copy it to a copper plate using a pantograph, and finally engrave the plate and produce a series of prints. Each patron would receive the original drawing, the plate, and, typically, a dozen engravings. Saint-Mémin's business was wildly successful, and for fourteen years it sustained him as he traveled through the eastern U.S. capturing the likenesses of many leading American figures of the day. Ellen G. Miles' extensive work on Saint- Mémin, published by the National Portrait Gallery, describes every aspect of his career and lists nearly a thousand of his known portraits. Of the portraits in the present collection, the earliest is that of Jane Macomb Kennedy, drawn and engraved in New York in 1797. Jane Macomb was born in Detroit in 1776, and in 1794 married Robert Kennedy, a Scottish nobleman born in New Jersey. Ellen Miles devotes a full page to details of Lady Kennedy's engraving, using it to illustrate Saint-Mémin's use of the roulette in shading and in executing dark backgrounds. She notes that Saint- Mémin would engrave a background after making an image, rather than using a mezzotinting technique, in which the entire plate is textured before the image is added (pp.72- 75). From 1798 to 1803, Saint-Mémin operated in Philadelphia, where Miles notes that he developed his own drawing style of lively, emphatic tones with strong black and white contrasts. Two of the present engravings come from that period, those of "Miss de la Grange" and Theodore Sedgwick. Miss de la Grange, probably no more than seven years old in her portrait, is a fairly uncommon example of a child subject in Saint-Mémin's work; she poses here in a princess-cut dress and a pearl necklace. Theodore Sedgwick was about fifty-five years old when his profile was made in 1801, the final year of his term as Speaker of the House of Representatives. Sedgwick was one of many prominent American politicians drawn by Saint-Mémin in Philadelphia. The final major phase of Saint-Mémin's career in the U.S. took place in Richmond and Charleston between 1807 and 1809. In 1808, while working in Richmond, he produced the portrait included here of Charles Everett, a Virginia physician and close friend of James Monroe. The latest portrait in the present collection is that of Frances Cadwalader Erskine, made in Philadelphia or Washington in 1809, one of the few portraits produced during Saint-Mémin's post-itinerant period. Mrs. Erskine, another American-born wife of a British aristocrat, is depicted here in an unusual oval-shaped engraving. The portrait was made after Saint-Mémin left Charleston in 1809, during or after his journey home to his family in New Jersey. In 1810, Saint-Mémin used the physiognotrace for the last time and returned to France for two years before moving back permanently in 1814. This fine and representative set of Saint-Mémin's American portraiture comes from the noted collection of Richard Townley Haines Halsey. Halsey, a Princeton graduate and stockbroker by trade, was an intense Americanist. He believed that by promoting the history of American craftsmanship, modern American industry would be better protected against the intrusion of foreign-made goods. Halsey began collecting in the 1890s and continued through the 1920s. His mission to advance modern scholarship in American decorative arts reached its zenith in 1924 with the opening of the American Wing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Halsey gave liberally of his expertise and his money to the project, the successful completion of which cemented his reputation as America's leading authority on the subject. Afterwards he pioneered a course at St. John's College in Maryland that explored the marriage between American arts and crafts, and American history, which became the model for a similar course taught by John Marshall Phillips at Yale University. Halsey ended his professional career as a research assistant with the Franklin Papers at Yale University.

A voyage to Abyssinia, and travels into the interior of that country, executed under the orders of the British government, in the years 1809 and 1810; in which are included, an account of the Portuguese settlements on the east coast of Africa.

First U.S. edition and printed by Lydia Bailey, following the London first of 1814. Salt, a British traveller and Egyptologist, first visited Ethiopia in 1805, and returned in 1809 on a diplomatic mission intended to promote ties between the British government and the Emperor of Abyssinia. The Voyage gives Salt's observations of Ethiopian customs, manners, dress, cuisine, and music, along with the factual details of his diplomatic achievements -- or lack thereof, in terms of concrete agreements -- followed by an appendix comparing vocabulary words from various languages spoken along "the Coast of Africa, from Mosambique to the borders of Egypt, with a few others spoken in the Interior of that Continent" (p. 395). This is an untrimmed copy in original boards, with 24 pages of advertising for Carey publications bound in at the front of the volume. The preliminary map, engraved by John Bower, has hand-colored border lines; this American edition does not call for the plates found in the English first, but does include in-text depictions of several "Ethiopic inscriptions."

PORTRAITS OF DISTINGUISHED AMERICANS ENGRAVED BY JULIEN FEVRET DE SAINT-MÉMIN 1770 - 1852 [box title]

[Various places, including Baltimore, New York, Philadelphia, & Washington, D.C., 1809. 20th-century red morocco hinged pull-off case, cover stamped and lettered in gilt. Case lightly worn at edges and front hinge neatly separated, else fine. Most portraits identified in upper left corner of matting in modern ink; some misidentified, most of which have notes with correct identification attached. Minor foxing and/or wear to a few portraits. Small pink stain in lower margin of Frances Cadwalader Erskine portrait, not affecting image. Most portraits in fine or near fine condition. An extraordinary collection of neoclassical profile portraits drawn and engraved by the famed French-American portraitist, Charles B.J.F. de Saint-Mémin. Forty-one prominent Americans of the Federal period are represented (there are several duplicates, see below), including such major figures as George Clinton, William Bradford, Col. William Duane, and Thomas Jefferson, who sat for the artist in 1804. All but one of the portraits are executed in Saint-Mémin's characteristic profile view and framed in a roundel. The single exception is Saint- Mémin's unusual oval-shaped engraving of Charles Willson Peale's front-view portrait of William Bradford. All of the engravings are matted and contained in a gilt morocco case. Michel Étienne Descourtilz (1775-1836) was a French physician, naturalist and traveller. "Following his marriage to the daughter of Rossignol-Desdunes, who had plantations in Artibonite, he went to Saint-Domingue (Haiti) in 1798, on the way visiting Charleston, South Carolina, and Santiago de Cuba. Descourtilz became involved in the Negro revolution and, in spite of the protection of Toussaint L'Ouverture was nearly executed by Dessalines. but in 1803 escaped and sailed to Cádiz. Most of his original drawings and manuscripts, as well as his herbarium, were burned in Haiti; and in writing his books he had to rely on the works of Plumier, Joseph Surian, Alexandre Poiteau, and Turpin. His zoological contributions, particularly those on the caiman, were highly praised" (DSB). Descourtilz is better known for his 'Flore Pittoresque et Médicale des Antilles'. Many plates show zoological matter such as shells, fishes, an octopus, crocodiles, insects as well as plants, exotic fruit and sceneries.

      - (1809-1870). Homme politique et révolutionnaire français. Lettre autographe signée, La Haye, 4 décembre 1869, à Jules Claretie, 5 pages ½ in-8. Enveloppe manuscrite jointe.

With the contemporary signatures of John and Elizabeth Teackle and Jos. Willey on the endpapers. First American, from the third London edition. The third edition contained substantial changes to the fourth and sixth chapters of the second volume. This was the first appearance of any of Malthus' works in America. The first edition was published in 1803. xvi, 510, xxxiv; vii, 542 pp. 2 vols. 8vo. "Malthus' law, that population increases at a greater rate than the means of subsistence; was one of the first and still one of the most widely debated of modern economic theories. The work aroused a storm of controversy since Malthus held that checks on the growth of population would be necessary, a theory which is still not finally extinguished. Malthus has exercised a strong influence, not merely in economics, but in the whole realm of social theory" (PMM). At the time of this writing, Britain was suffering under the problems of poverty, unemployment, population and diseases, taxes - many the effects of the Industrial Revolution. The French Revolution, combined with these other factors was causing unrest among the lower classes. In America, there was a surplus of raw materials and a shortage of manpower which gave the Americans a different point of view on Mathusian theories. Chapter Four pertains specifically to the American Indians. Carpenter "Economic Best Sellers before 1850" xxxii (3); Kress B5542; Goldsmith's Library 19819.
