?Burgos: , c.1809. [Spanish Army. General instructions on accounting for quartermasters and other accountants of the armed forces.] Quarto (278 × 200 mm). Contemporary half calf on drab boards, double ruled compartments to flat spine. Tables to the text. A little rubbed, particularly on the spine, the contents, foxed, browned with occasional staining, but overall very good. Presumed first edition of these detailed instructions for the accounting of stores for the French Army in Spain, no other copy traced. This copy with a wonderful provenance having been looted by John Aitchison with his manuscript note to the verso of the front free endpaper - "Taken from the quarters of the Intendant General of the French Army of Spain in the Palace of the Duke of Medina-Coli at Madrid, 16th August 1812, J. Aitchison" - and his ink-stamp to the first leaf, a few pencilled notes to the text. The British Army entered Madrid on 12 August, following a brief and vicious skirmish between a small French reconnaissance party and the cavalry of the advancing Allied forces at Majalahonda/Las Rozas, described by Digby Smith as "a drawn match" (The Napoleonic Wars Data Book, p.385) and by Aitchison himself as an "unfortunate affair" (p.186); "Wellington entered Madrid unopposed next day - vexed that his arrival should have been marred by the untoward business at Majalahonda, 'a devil of an affair' as he described it in a private letter … But the inhabitants of the Spanish capital took little heed of the mishap - the departure of the French was the only thing that mattered. Their enthusiasm was unbounded. 'I have never witnessed' wrote [Private Wheeler], 'such a scene before. For a distance of five miles from the gates the road was crowded with the people who had come out to meet us, each bringing something - laurel boughs, flowers, bread, wine, grapes, lemonade, sweetmeats, &c. The road was like a moving forest from the multitude who carried palms, which they strewed in the way for us to march over … Wellington himself rode at the head of our regiment, we were flushed with victory, and a defeated enemy was flying in our front: proud of the honour paid us by the people, we entered Madrid, the air rent with cries of 'Long live Wellington, Long live the English'" (Oman, V, p.514). In his letters Aitchison himself describes the army's reception in similarly extravagant terms; "The joy of the inhabitants at our appearance has been excessive, and they have given vent to their feelings with all that extravaganza which could be imagined of a people on finding themselves free after bondage of four years. Lord Wellington is regarded as a Demi-God and the army under him looked upon as invincible" (p.186). John Aitchison, (1789-1875), later General Sir John Aitchison KCB GCB, served as an ensign in the 3rd Foot Guards throughout the War. Present at the Passage of the Douro, wounded in the arm while carrying the King's colour at Talavera; he also saw action at Busaco, Salamanca, Vittoria, San Sebastian, Nivelle, Nive and Bayonne and took part in the capture of Madrid and the Siege of Burgos. His later service was in India, 1845-51, as Major General on the staff of the Madras Presidency. His letters from the Peninsula were published in 1981 as An Ensign in the Peninsular War : The Letters of John Aitchison. He is buried in Kensal Rise cemetery

LE KAIRE Vue extérieure de la Mosquée de Touloun (E M Vol I Pl 29) pl & §BOUILLARD#§§(sculpsit) EDITION ORIGINALE

Paris: Imprimerie Impériale, 1809. Fine. Imprimerie Impériale, Paris 1809-1828, 70,5 x 53,5 cm. - Original etching in plano, untrimmed, extracted from the'' Imperial Edition 'of the Description of Egypt or Collection of Observations and Research made in Egypt during the French expedition, published by order of His Majesty the Emperor Napoleon Grand. Conducted between 1802 and 1830 and published between 1809 and 1828, she was taken in 1000 copies available to institutions. Laid the watermark visible by transparency ancient and modern Egypt paper. This engraving shows a great view of the Tulun Mosque and its minaret in Cairo. The Ibn Tulun Mosque (named Ahmad Ibn Tulun) is the oldest mosque in the city that is in its original state and the oldest Islamic monument in the country. It is also the largest in terms of floor space. It is located near the Citadel of Saladin and the Mosque of Sultan Hassan. Its spiral minaret reminds Samarra. Its construction was ordered by Ahmad Ibn Tulun, the Abbasid governor of Egypt, who ruled the country virtually self-Way 868-884 According to historian Al Maqrizi, the construction of the building began in 876.; a registration date of the completion year 265 AH, that is to say, the year AD 879. Marginal tiny bites do not affect any of the board and without a hitch lack in upper left margin, otherwise excellent freshness and preservation. The monumental first edition of the Description of Egypt in 13 volumes contained 892 colored plates of which 72, including 9 volumes involved antiquity. Other volumes dealt with the Natural History and modern Egypt as Napoleon Bonaparte had brought with him a commission of scholars from all disciplines so that it was said, in his description was stored the richest museum of universe. This book was written in part by Baron Dominique Vivant Denon, before he is appointed Managing Director of the Louvre Museum Napoleon. More than 80 artists and 400 writers were hired for this huge project. The unusually large size boards necessitated the creation of a special press and a specific piece of furniture to keep them ...! --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information!

Thomas Campbell (1777--1844) was a Scottish poet chiefly remembered for his sentimental poetry dealing specially with human affairs. He was also one of the initiators of a plan to found what became the University of London. "Gertrude of Wyoming? was enormously popular with early 19th-century American readers. "Gertrude" is based on an incident during the American Revolution, when American colonists in the Wyoming Valley in what is now north-eastern Pennsylvania were attacked by Tories and their Native American allies. Over 200 of the 300 Continental soldiers defending the Valley were killed, and many colonists died attempting to escape or were killed during looting. A granite monument raised over the grave of those slain was finished in the 1830s. CBEL, III, p.183. Sabin 10268.

[K 621] La Clemenza di Tito Dramma in due Atti Partitura Titus Oper in Zwey Akten Partitur Preis 6 Rthlr [Full score]

Leipzig: Breitkopf & Härtel [PN 620]. [1809]. Folio. Dark green half leather with marbled boards, spine in decorative compartment gilt with titling gilt, marbled endpapers. 1f. (title), [i] (table of contents), [i] (blank), [viiii] (cast list and libretto, in German only, in two numbered columns), [i] (blank), 2-107, [i] (blank) pp. Libretto typeset; music engraved. Text in Italian and German. Overture (pp. 2-9) without plate number. Slightly browned; closely trimmed, not affecting text. . First Edition. Haberkamp I, p. 379. Köchel 6, p. 720. Hoboken 12, 592. Hirsch II, 628 (but "in zwei Akten"). RISM M5094 ("in zwei Akten"). With the secco recitatives and stage directions in the libretto. La Clemenza di Tito an opera seria in two acts to a libretto by Pietro Metastasio adapted by Caterino Mazzolà, was first performed in Prague at the National Theatre on September 6, 1791, approximately 3 months before Mozart died on December 5, 1791. He had arrived in Prague on August 28 and, despite his illness, finished work on the opera on the eve of the performance. "The reception was modest until a triumphant last night was reported to Mozart (who had left Prague on 15 September) on the day of the première of Die Zauberflöte (30 September)... Had he lived to prepare further performances, Mozart would surely have replaced SüssmayrÂ’s simple recitatives (which do not always end in an appropriate key). He might have increased the orchestrated recitative to a quantity approaching that in Così and, as he had planned for Idomeneo, rearranged the vocal forces, with a tenor Sextus. Now that performances and recordings, and a general revival of 18th-century repertory, encourage reassessment of its virtues, La clemenza di Tito clearly appears a conception not fully realized, but still masterly and amply rewarding study and performance."       New York: Brentano's, n.d. - Early Edition. Qto., pp. 412. With colour frontispiece and 31 plates, of which 7 are coloured. Publisher's black cloth with bright gilt titles to spine, pictorial title pasted down to upper; top edge tinted black. A little bumped and rubbed. Dustwrapper aside, this is a lovely copy. A seminal figure in the development of science fiction and the detective story, Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) exerted a great influence on Dostoevsky, Conan Doyle, Verne, and Baudelaire. This collection of Poe's best stories contains all the terrifying and bewildering tales that characterize his work, as well as the Gothic horror of 'The Pit and the Pendulum' with other similarly weird tales, together with all three of the landmark cases featuring his ground-breaking detective Auguste Dupin; the history of the detective story begins with the publication of 'The Murders In the Rue Morgue' (Matthews). He was a writer of genius who was interested in crime, especially violent death, in cryptograms, and the whole process of logical deduction (Quayle). Poe's mystery of 'The Purloined Letter' is a prototype of spy stories like those of James Bond (Haining). Queen's Quorum (their first Cornerstone title), Eric Quayle; Detective Fiction. Peter Haining; Crime Fiction. Listed in 100 Books That Shaped World History [Raftery, 2002]. Bleiler; Checklist of Fantastic Literature [1972].         Elemente der Staatskunst

Berlin, bei J.D. Sander 1809 - . Wenn A.O. Had he lived to prepare further performances, Mozart would surely have replaced Süssmayr?'s simple recitatives (which do not always end in an appropriate key). He might have increased the orchestrated recitative to a quantity approaching that in Così and, as he had planned for Idomeneo, rearranged the vocal forces, with a tenor Sextus. Now that performances and recordings, and a general revival of 18th-century repertory, encourage reassessment of its virtues, La clemenza di Tito clearly appears a conception not fully realized, but still masterly and amply rewarding study and performance."

Vgl. Ausst. Katalog: Deutsche Künstler um Ludwig I. in Rom.
