[A Bound Collection of 224 South American Imprints, printed in Buenos Aires Between 1807 and 1809]

Buenos Aires, 1809. Small quarto. Three bound volumes, plus 9 unbound or disbound pamphlets, for a total of 224 separate imprints (including one Rio de Janiero imprint, two Spanish imprints, and two Buenos Aires duplicates). All items but one (the Rio de Janiero imprint at the beginning of the first volume, printed in Portuguese and French) printed in Spanish. Contemporary vellum, original leather ties, contemporary ink manuscript titles on spines. Vellum slightly soiled. In fine condition. An extraordinary archive of Buenos Aires imprints, composed primarily of newsletters printed at the Imprenta Ni?os Expositos between June 1807 and November 1809. The collection represents over one quarter of the entire recorded output of the Buenos Aires press during this period and constitutes a major archive of news stories extracted from Spanish, Portuguese, English, and Brazilian sources and printed for Argentine readers during a pivotal period in the regions history. The news accounts, together with a significant number of manifestos, poems, proclamations, and decrees, cover the invasions and defeats of the British at Montevideo and Buenos Aires in 1807, the collapse of the Spanish monarchy in 1808, Spanish efforts against Napoleonic rule, and the battles and effects of the Napoleonic wars in Europe and the Americas - crucial events in the formation of Argentine self-determination and eventual independence from Spain. The first and third volumes of the collection are largely devoted to newsletters, while the second volume contains a number of seperate pamphlets, manifestos, and political statements.Virtually all of the imprints in the collection are listed in Guillermo Furlong's authoritative Historia y Bibliografía de las Primeras Impentas Rioplatenses . Exceptions include an anti-Napoleonic manifesto printed in Rio de Janeiro (Volume 1, item 1), two pamphlets printed for the Spanish government-in-exile at Cadiz (Volume 2, items 84 and 89), and two items not bearing a publisher's imprint, but for which context, paper, and printing style all suggest a Buenos Aries origin (Volume 1, item 56, and Volume 3, item 71). All imprints are listed below (unless otherwise noted, titles are caption titles, the format of the leaves is quarto, and the printing location is Buenos Aires). All Buenos Aires imprints have their Furlong citation as well.

        Voyages dans l'Am?rique M?ridionale, par Don F?lix De Azara ... depuis 1781 jusqu'en 1801

Paris: Dentu, 1809. 5 volumes (text: 4 volumes, 8vo [7 3/4 x 4 7/8 inches]; atlas: folio [14 x 10 1/4 inches]). Text: lx,389; [4],562pp. plus three folding tables; [4],ii,479; [4],380pp. Atlas: [4]pp. Twenty-five engraved maps and plates. Atlas uncut. Text: contemporary tree calf, covers bordered in gilt, flat spine in compartments with red and black morocco lettering pieces in the second and fourth, the others with a repeat decoration in gilt, marbled endpapers. Atlas: publisher's blue paper boards, printed paper label on the upper cover. The preferred First French Edition, with additional notes by Cuvier and Sonnini: the atlas here uncut and in original boards. An important work by Spanish naturalist Felix de Azara (1746-1821). Azara, a military officer, was part of a delegation to settle the boundary dispute between Spain and Portugal in the Rio de la Plata region. He was in the region for twenty years, from 1781 to 1801, documenting the wildlife, natives, and geography of the area. This work is the culmination of his time there, published upon his return to Europe. The atlas includes folding maps of South America, Paraguay and the Province of Buenos Aires, the Government of Buenos Aires, the Government of Paraguay and part of Chaco, and the Province of Chiquitos and Government of Matagroso and of Cuyaba; eight city plans and views, including a double-page plan and view of Buenos Aires, seven plates depicting animals, and four plates depicting birds.First published in Spanish in Madrid between 1802 and 1805, the work provides an important contribution to natural history, describing over 400 species of birds, many for the first time (see vols. 3 and 4 of the text). Interestingly, Darwin would read Azara's work following his return from the second voyage and refer to it within his Voyage of the Beagle. Palau 20975; Sabin 2541; Field 62; Wood, p. 214.

[Two Pencil Sketches by William Daniell, after Architect George Dance, showing the artists William Hodges and Samuel Pepys Cockerell]

1809. Each pencil sketch on a sheet 10 x 8 inches. Matted to 15? x 13? inches. Minor toning and soiling. Very good. One great landscape artist portrays another. Two pencil drawings by landscape painter and engraver William Daniell, after drawings by George Dance, possibly executed around the time of Daniell's engraving of the portraits for the work A Collection of Portraits Sketched from the Life since the year 1793 by George Dance ...(London, 1809-1814). Daniell (1769-1837) was an accomplished landscape artist, etcher and engraver. He traveled with his uncle, renowned landscape painter Thomas Daniell, to India (1786-1793), where he assisted his uncle and developed his own skills. He later produced many magnificent views of locales around the globe, particularly of India. In addition to his well-known landscape works, he also engraved and published a series of portraits drawn by architect George Dance (1741-1825), some of which were published in a two volume work in 1809-1814. Late in his career, Dance turned his hand to other art forms, including music and chalk profile portraits of friends and acquaintances. The two subjects depicted here are fellow artists - Samuel Pepys Cockerell was a fellow architect, and William Hodges was a painter, particularly noted for being the artist on Captain James Cook's second voyage. Each volume of the work published thirty-six portraits with descriptive text about the subject. William Hodges is depicted in the second volume. The engraved portrait faces right, while this sketch faces left, making it a mirror image for printing. The Yale Center for British Art holds not only the published work but also a volume of proof prints, each labeled in manuscript, with the manuscript title "A Series of Portraits drawn by George Dance Esq. and Engraved by Wm. Daniell." This proof volume is comprised only of portraits, with no text, and includes a further eighty-five engravings beyond the seventy-two published by Daniell in 1809-1814. This is particularly interesting in light of the fact that while the portrait of William Hodges appears in the published work, Samuel Pepys Cockerell does not - though he is among the proof prints.Since Dance's original drawings were done in chalk, which is a much looser medium than line-engraving, it is possible that Daniell created these drawings to provide himself with a more defined and delineated image from which to create his engraving. These drawings therefore provided an interesting and important step in the engraving process.

The Duke of York's Letter to Mrs Clarke

London: S.W. Fores, 1809. First edition. 15 x 9-3/4 in. Old folds, awkwardly trimmed, else fine. First edition. 15 x 9-3/4 in. The letter is a satire on the domestic affairs of the much maligned Duke of York. Having negotiated the cessation of their relations (and her silence) with an annual pension, Frederick abruptly cancelled it in 1808. It was a plan poorly thought through and Mrs Clarke was detemined to get revenge. The Duke's position was weakened further once rumours began to spread that Clarke had used her position as mistress to secure commissions for money. In later January 1809 a motion was brought before the house and a 12 day inquiry resulted. Clarke was interviewed and delighted in revealing her complicity with the case. Although Frederick's guilt could not be fully proven, parliament would not grant his complete exoneration and he resigned his post as Commander-in-Chief of the the British Army on 18 March 1809. Rebus letters have been extant since the middle ages when they were often used to denote heraldry. As we know them, they refer to the substitution of pictograms (purely for their phonetic value) for conventially spelled words - a sort of visual pun. Published at the height of the scandal, this one commences: "Ho[yew] [can] [eye] x[pea]ress s[yew]ff[eye]c[eye][hen]tly [toe] my s[wheat]est, my darli[hen]g L[eye]fe, the d[light] [witch] her d[hay]rli[hen]g, her [pea]rety [letter]..." According to BM Satires, Charles Williams is the creator of this work. Williams drew in the fashion of James Gillray and was chief caricaturist for the publisher S.W. Fores. He worked with George Cruikshank on The Every-Day Book and also illustrated Dr Syntax in Paris (1820). Williams is also known to be the first to caricature Arthur Wellesley, the 1st Duke of Wellington. BM Satires 11228

?Burgos: , c.1809. [Spanish Army. General instructions on accounting for quartermasters and other accountants of the armed forces.] Quarto (278 × 200 mm). Contemporary half calf on drab boards, double ruled compartments to flat spine. Tables to the text. A little rubbed, particularly on the spine, the contents, foxed, browned with occasional staining, but overall very good. Presumed first edition of these detailed instructions for the accounting of stores for the French Army in Spain, no other copy traced. This copy with a wonderful provenance having been looted by John Aitchison with his manuscript note to the verso of the front free endpaper - "Taken from the quarters of the Intendant General of the French Army of Spain in the Palace of the Duke of Medina-Coli at Madrid, 16th August 1812, J. Aitchison" - and his ink-stamp to the first leaf, a few pencilled notes to the text. The British Army entered Madrid on 12 August, following a brief and vicious skirmish between a small French reconnaissance party and the cavalry of the advancing Allied forces at Majalahonda/Las Rozas, described by Digby Smith as "a drawn match" (The Napoleonic Wars Data Book, p.385) and by Aitchison himself as an "unfortunate affair" (p.186); "Wellington entered Madrid unopposed next day - vexed that his arrival should have been marred by the untoward business at Majalahonda, 'a devil of an affair' as he described it in a private letter … But the inhabitants of the Spanish capital took little heed of the mishap - the departure of the French was the only thing that mattered. Their enthusiasm was unbounded. 'I have never witnessed' wrote [Private Wheeler], 'such a scene before. For a distance of five miles from the gates the road was crowded with the people who had come out to meet us, each bringing something - laurel boughs, flowers, bread, wine, grapes, lemonade, sweetmeats, &c. The road was like a moving forest from the multitude who carried palms, which they strewed in the way for us to march over … Wellington himself rode at the head of our regiment, we were flushed with victory, and a defeated enemy was flying in our front: proud of the honour paid us by the people, we entered Madrid, the air rent with cries of 'Long live Wellington, Long live the English'" (Oman, V, p.514). In his letters Aitchison himself describes the army's reception in similarly extravagant terms; "The joy of the inhabitants at our appearance has been excessive, and they have given vent to their feelings with all that extravaganza which could be imagined of a people on finding themselves free after bondage of four years. Lord Wellington is regarded as a Demi-God and the army under him looked upon as invincible" (p.186). John Aitchison, (1789-1875), later General Sir John Aitchison KCB GCB, served as an ensign in the 3rd Foot Guards throughout the War. Present at the Passage of the Douro, wounded in the arm while carrying the King's colour at Talavera; he also saw action at Busaco, Salamanca, Vittoria, San Sebastian, Nivelle, Nive and Bayonne and took part in the capture of Madrid and the Siege of Burgos. His later service was in India, 1845-51, as Major General on the staff of the Madras Presidency. His letters from the Peninsula were published in 1981 as An Ensign in the Peninsular War : The Letters of John Aitchison. He is buried in Kensal Rise cemetery

This engraving shows a great view of the Tulun Mosque and its minaret in Cairo. It is also the largest in terms of floor space. It is located near the Citadel of Saladin and the Mosque of Sultan Hassan. Its spiral minaret reminds Samarra. Marginal tiny bites do not affect any of the board and without a hitch lack in upper left margin, otherwise excellent freshness and preservation. The monumental first edition of the Description of Egypt in 13 volumes contained 892 colored plates of which 72, including 9 volumes involved antiquity. Other volumes dealt with the Natural History and modern Egypt as Napoleon Bonaparte had brought with him a commission of scholars from all disciplines so that it was said, in his description was stored the richest museum of universe.
