Proofs of the Corruption of Gen. James Wilkinson, and of his Connexion with Aaron Burr.

Philadelphia: Wm. Hall, Jun. & Geo. W. Pierie, 1809. - 8vo., (8 7/8 x 5 ¼ inches). (Lightly and evenly toned throughout). Contemporary half tan calf, marbled boards, the spine in six compartments with five raised bands, black morocco gilt lettering piece in one and decorated in the rest (extremities a bit worn). First edition. This contemporary account is one of the best-documented works on Burr's plot to seize Texas and other Spanish territory west of the Mississippi. It is an indispensable volume, filled with many primary documents, including material relating to Texas. In it, Clark strives to show that Wilkinson was in the pay of Spain and an accomplice of Burr in the treason. According to A. P. Whitaker, it is "a remarkably accurate account of Wilkinson's dealing with the Spaniards. All that the book lacks is.the proofs. These were in the Spanish archives, and have since been found there." Clark came to New Orleans in 1786, where he achieved prominence and became connected with Gen. Wilkinson, but later broke with him. "Gives much evidence of the General's treachery" (Streeter Sale III: 1694). Howes C431 ("aa"); Sabin 13265.         BRINDES PER ON DISNA' ALLA CASSINNA DI POMM El di' 14 Mag 1809.

s.l. s.e. (1809). In-16 (mm. 172x105), cartoncino muto coevo, pp, 12. - Sconosciuto a Orlando Cecco e a Bezzola.

        ROMANTIC TALES

New-York: Printed for M. & W. Ward, 149, Pearl-street,. 1809. 12mo, two volumes: pp. [1-5] 6347 [348-350: blank] [note: last leaf is a blank]; [1-5] 6-333 [334: blank],. nineteenth-century three-quarter calf and marbled boards.. Calf worn at edges, boards scuffed, outer joints tender, some foxing. to text block, a good set overall. (#110116). First U.S. edition. Lewis's Gothic sampler, interspersed with nightmare and graveyard verse, "contains examples of oriental, Germanic, medieval, and monastic Gothicism in both the terrific and horrific modes. Robert D. Spector observes that although these tales are pure Gothic, Lewis 'had toned down the ghastly, supernatural elements which had made THE MONK a sensational, although infamous, success.' Yet, Lewis's fondness for an ugly macabre as well as a sadistic supernatural is still very clearly in evidence. In fact, Poe's title, 'Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque,' could serve as a title for the Gothic variety of Lewis's collection. As may be judged from the modern reprintings of several stories, each of the prose tales is long enough to qualify as a Gothic novella. In their order, the tales are: MISTRUST: OR, BLANCH AND OSBRIGHT, A FEUDAL ROMANCE (medieval Gothic adapted from a drama by von Kleist, THE FAMILY OF SCHROFFENSTEIN); THE ANACONDA (an East Indian story using the natural horror associated with a serpent); THE FOUR FACARDINS (a Gothic Marchen with touches of the Schauerromantik); MY UNCLE'S GARRET WINDOW (domestic or neighborhood Gothic whose theme bears comparison with Hawthorne's story of connubial espionage, 'Wakefield'); AMORASSAN: OR, THE SPIRIT OF THE FROZEN OCEAN (orientalized Gothic containing strong reminders of Beckford's VATHEK). Although THE ANACONDA has a quality of cruel horror which might have appealed to Ambrose Bierce and THE FOUR FACARDINS is overrun with Schauerromantik effects, the story which seems the most conventionally Gothic and which bears the closest resemblance to the repellent excitement of THE MONK is MISTRUST: OR, BLANCHE AND OSBRIGHT." - Frank, The First Gothics 247. ROMANTIC TALES was a very popular collection which was more than once reprinted in its entirety and favorite tales were published sometimes separately, sometimes with other pieces by Lewis, and sometimes even with pieces not from his pen. Summers, pp. 484-86. Block, The English Novel 1740-1850, p. 139. Shaw and Shoemaker 17909. Bleiler (1978), p. 124. Not in Reginald (1979; 1992).

[Attributes: First Edition]

Paris: Courcier, 1809. Five volumes, octavo, and a quarto atlas; contemporary French quarter calf and papered boards, flat spines banded in gilt with double orange labels, a beautiful set. The first French commercial voyage to the Northwest coast. The first French commercial voyage to the Northwest coast of America, and the second French circumnavigation - some twenty-five years after Bougainville's.Returning from Bengal in 1788, Marchand had come across the voyager Portlock who told him of the lucrative fur trade between the Northwest coast and China. 'The trading firm of Baux in Marseilles underwrote a commercial expedition and purchased and fitted out the copper-sheathed ship Solide, which sailed in December 1790 for the Pacific via Cape Horn. At the Marquesas, Marchand took possession of two islands, Uapou and Nukuhiva (which he named Ile Baux), not knowing of Ingraham's visit on the Hope two months earlier... At the Northwest coast he obtained a large cargo of furs, sailed south to Hawaii, through the Marianas, and reached Macao...'This was a successful voyage but a commercial failure. Marchand was unable to sell his furs, and upon his return to France they were impounded by a revolutionary faction and eventually perished. The firm of Baux ultimately lost two-thirds of its capital in the venture...' (Forbes).Nevertheless, Marchand had proved that in times of peace, the French could compete successfully in the Pacific trade. As Marchand died in 1793, the work was actually written by Count Charles Pierre Fleurieu, himself an explorer. It includes a good account of discoveries along the American coast, from Cortes in 1537 to Malaspina in 1790, including records of Drake, Juan de Fuca, Cook, La Pérouse, Meares, Colnett, Portlock and Dixon. Considerable text is devoted to descriptions of natural history specimens collected en route. The final volume contains a critical analysis of Roggeween's voyage, and the engraved charts include five of Alaska and the Northwest coast, four of Marquesan interest and one of Hawaii, while the China Sea chart contains important corrections. Lada-Mocarski calls it "a very important and authoritative work for the history of the Northwest coast".O'Reilly and Reitman note: 'Relation du voyage du Solide, rédigée par Claret de Fleurieu. The book was published in Paris in 1798-1800 in two forms, as four quarto volumes, the last an atlas of plates, or as six volumes, the first five the text in octavo and the sixth the same atlas as the quarto edition. In 1809 the octavo version was reissued in the form offered here, with the simple substitution of a new title-page (Forbes cites a re-issue of the quarto rather than the octavo version, perhaps in error).

Parts 1-20, June 1 1809 - January 4 1810, and the 16pp 'supernumerary essay', dated January 11, 1810. 336pp continuously paginated. Coleridge was responsible for almost the entirety of the publication, which was formed of essays and articles drawn from the author's widespread knowledge of history, law, philosophy, politics, and literary criticism. Impressive in its breadth of subject matter, the publication was nonetheless inaccessible to many readers, and despite having over 500 subscribers, failed to attain financial viability. Publication ceased in spring 1810, though the work was considered important by Coleridge's peers, and a second edition appeared in 1818.

Two Pencil Sketches by William Daniell, after Architect George Dance, showing the artists William Hodges and Samuel Pepys Cockerell]

1809 - Each pencil sketch on a sheet 10 x 8 inches. Matted to 15½ x 13½ inches. Minor toning and soiling. Very good. One great landscape artist portrays another. Two pencil drawings by landscape painter and engraver William Daniell, after drawings by George Dance, possibly executed around the time of Daniell's engraving of the portraits for the work A Collection of Portraits Sketched from the Life since the year 1793 by George Dance .(London, 1809-1814). Daniell (1769-1837) was an accomplished landscape artist, etcher and engraver. He traveled with his uncle, renowned landscape painter Thomas Daniell, to India (1786-1793), where he assisted his uncle and developed his own skills. He later produced many magnificent views of locales around the globe, particularly of India. In addition to his well-known landscape works, he also engraved and published a series of portraits drawn by architect George Dance (1741-1825), some of which were published in a two volume work in 1809-1814. Late in his career, Dance turned his hand to other art forms, including music and chalk profile portraits of friends and acquaintances. The two subjects depicted here are fellow artists - Samuel Pepys Cockerell was a fellow architect, and William Hodges was a painter, particularly noted for being the artist on Captain James Cook's second voyage. Each volume of the work published thirty-six portraits with descriptive text about the subject. William Hodges is depicted in the second volume. The engraved portrait faces right, while this sketch faces left, making it a mirror image for printing. The Yale Center for British Art holds not only the published work but also a volume of proof prints, each labeled in manuscript, with the manuscript title "A Series of Portraits drawn by George Dance Esq. and Engraved by Wm. Daniell." This proof volume is comprised only of portraits, with no text, and includes a further eighty-five engravings beyond the seventy-two published by Daniell in 1809-1814. This is particularly interesting in light of the fact that while the portrait of William Hodges appears in the published work, Samuel Pepys Cockerell does not - though he is among the proof prints. Since Dance's original drawings were done in chalk, which is a much looser medium than line-engraving, it is possible that Daniell created these drawings to provide himself with a more defined and delineated image from which to create his engraving. These drawings therefore provided an interesting and important step in the engraving process. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
