Marmion. A Tale of Flodden Field

Printed by J. Ballantyne and Co. for Archibald Constable and Co., Edinburgh; and William Miller, and John Murray, London, Edinburgh 1808 - [10], 377, [1], cxxvi pp. Second state of the first impression with cancels on three leaves (c1, B1, X3). One of 2000 copies issued. The poem concerns Lord Marmion who is after a favorite of Henry VIII, the wealthy heiress, Clara de Clare. He implicates her fiance, Sir Ralph De Wilton, in a treasonable plot, but eventually De Wilton has Marmion unmasked just as the battle of Flodden Field (one of the greatest disasters in Scottish history [1513]) begins. Marmion is killed in the battle while De Wilton regains his honor, estates, and Clara. The book was a tremendous success, despite its exceedingly high price, with at least three editions issued the same year. NCBEL III, 370. Ruff 59 (see pp.49-53). Front board very tender but threads still holding, joints rubbed, some minor rubbing along top edges and a few bands, otherwise a crisp, tight copy, gilt glowing, with some faint scattered foxing. A beautiful production. Full fine tooled pebbled calf, raised bands, gilt decorated compartments, outer gilt rules, elaborate inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, sewn-in bookmark [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Receipt for 122 Slaves signed by N. J. Bayard

1808. Very Good. Holograph document. Single half sheet. 20 x 14cm. Written on one side only. Dated July 8th, 1808. Two vertical and horizontal folds. Minor splitting along folds. Receipt for "122 negros" from "Wm Lindsy Jun." Included 71 sold, minus 1 returned by Henry Sadler, 14 died, 33 delivered to Wm Lindsy and 4 remaining "subject to order of Wm Lindsy Jun." Location not given, but possibly Havana. The relation between Bayard and "Lindsy" is unclear. A death rate of about 11% is in line with Coughtry's estimate of an average mortality rate of about 12% on the slaving voyages covered in "The Notorious Triangle." A William Lindsey shows up in that book [at pages 279 and 284] as the captain of slave ships sailing from Bristol, Rhode Island in 1805 and 1807 and delivering their cargos of slaves to Havana. The slaves covered by this receipt may well have been brought from Africa after the Federal ban on importation of slaves into the United States took effect on January 1, 1808.

        David, Jules - Fashion.

ELEGANTE DAMES IN HET BOIS DE BOULOGNEMode tekening met pen en waterverf op karton door Jules David (1808 - Parijs - 1892). Gesigneerd links onder. Verso gedateerd/beschreven: ?1877 / 3?me No d?Avril / No 16??.

MRS. LEICESTER'S SCHOOL: or, The History of Several Young Ladies, Related by Themselves.

M.J.Godwin at the Juvenile Library 1809 1808 - First edition. Finely bound by Riviere in scarlet morocco, with raised bands and gilt titles to spine and elaborate gilt turn-ins and silk endpapers. A near fine copy with just a trace of wear to the top of the front joint. Wood engraved frontispiece after W.Hopwood and various wood engraved tail pieces. An early piece of juvenilia principally by Mary Lamb in which a new intake of pupils arrive at Mrs. Leicester's school for girls, and she suggests they spend their first evening together relating to each other the histories of their past lives, so that 'you will not then look so unsociably upon each other.' Many of Mary's stories for the volume deal with the girls' difficulties at home with their immediate family before their appearance at the school and are to a certain extent autobiographical, reflecting Mary's troubled childhood and history of mental instability.         Der Nordische Kontrolleur. 1-2.

      - (Stockholm, J. P. Lindh), 1808-09. 8:o. (2),+ 384; (2),+ 385-701 s. Liten fläck s. 55 och s. 495, samt enstaka lagerfläckar, andra titelbladet förstärkt i innerkant, reva s. 671-672. Något nötta samtida marmorerade pappband, gröna titeletiketter. Två volymer. Ur Ericsbergs bibliotek. Setterwall 3340. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

ELEGANTE DAMES IN HET BOIS DE BOULOGNEMode tekening met pen en waterverf op karton door Jules David (1808 - Parijs - 1892). Gesigneerd links onder. Verso gedateerd/beschreven: ?1877 / 3?me No d?Avril / No 16??. Prijs: ?985,- (incl. 21% BTW).

Lutgers met geschiedkundige aanteekeningen van W.J. Hofdijk.[The Hague, J.D. Steuerwald], 1869. Folio. With a lithographed title-page (with a separately tinted lithographed view) and 87 tinted lithographed plates (ca. 16.5 x 22.5 cm), designed and lithographed by P.J. Lutgers. Near contemporary half sheepskin by J.A. Loebèr, Leiden.

Landwehr, Coloured plates 356; Scheen, p. 732; Thieme & Becker XXIII, p. 480. Enlarged second edition of the most detailed and extensive set of views of stately houses and their gardens, other buildings and landscapes, all in the vicinity of Utrecht, with 88 tinted lithographs (including the title-page). Most of the views show people in the foreground, and some include boats on the canals, horses, cattle, dogs, etc. The view of the town of Rhenen (35 kilometres east of Utrecht) even shows the recently introduced steam boats on the river. All were drawn in situ by Lutgers (1808-1874), who spent about ten years preparing this last of his four great series of views. This time, however, he used tint blocks, giving a beige background to most of each print, but with a few areas left white to indicate the lighting or to highlight a feature. The lithographic title-page is followed by a two-page dedication to the queen (Sophia Frederica Mathilda, wife of King Willem III), Lutgers' two-page preface, a two-page list of the plates, and eighteen pages with Hofdijk's notes on the history and owners of the houses depicted. Some of the plates foxed. Binding worn along the extremities with a few minor damages to the spine. Overall in good condition.
