(F.X.         ROMANTIC TALES ... In Four Volumes ..

London: Printed by D. N. Shury, 7, Berwick Street, for Longman, Hurst, Rees, and Orme, Paternoster-Row, 1808.. 12mo, four volumes: pp. [i-vii] viii-xxiii [xxiv] [1-3] 4-307 [308: blank]; [i-iv] [1-3] 4-335 [336: blank]; [i-iv] [1-3] 4-276; [i-iv] [1-3] 4-325 [326: blank], rebound in full brown calf, t.e.g., marbled endpapers. First edition. Lewis's Gothic sampler, interspersed with nightmare and graveyard verse, "contains examples of oriental, Germanic, medieval, and monastic Gothicism in both the terrific and horrific modes. Robert D. Spector observes that although these tales are pure Gothic, Lewis 'had toned down the ghastly, supernatural elements which had made THE MONK a sensational, although infamous, success.' Yet, Lewis's fondness for an ugly macabre as well as a sadistic supernatural is still very clearly in evidence. In fact, Poe's title, 'Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque,' could serve as a title for the Gothic variety of Lewis's collection. As may be judged from the modern reprintings of several stories, each of the prose tales is long enough to qualify as a Gothic novella. In their order, the tales are: MISTRUST: OR, BLANCH AND OSBRIGHT, A FEUDAL ROMANCE (medieval Gothic adapted from a drama by von Kleist, THE FAMILY OF SCHROFFENSTEIN); THE ANACONDA (an East Indian story using the natural horror associated with a serpent); THE FOUR FACARDINS (a Gothic Marchen with touches of the Schauerromantik); MY UNCLE'S GARRET WINDOW (domestic or neighborhood Gothic whose theme bears comparison with Hawthorne's story of connubial espionage, 'Wakefield'); AMORASSAN: OR, THE SPIRIT OF THE FROZEN OCEAN (orientalized Gothic containing strong reminders of Beckford's VATHEK). Although THE ANACONDA has a quality of cruel horror which might have appealed to Ambrose Bierce and THE FOUR FACARDINS is overrun with Schauerromantik effects, the story which seems the most conventionally Gothic and which bears the closest resemblance to the repellent excitement of THE MONK is MISTRUST: OR, BLANCHE AND OSBRIGHT." - Frank, The First Gothics 247. ROMANTIC TALES was a very popular collection which was more than once reprinted in its entirety and favorite tales were published sometimes separately, sometimes with other pieces by Lewis, and sometimes even with pieces not from his pen. Garside, Raven and Schöwerling 1808: 72. Summers, pp. 484-86. Block, The English Novel 1740-1850, p. 139. Bleiler (1978), p. 124. Not in Reginald (1979; 1992). Ex-library Public Library Kansas City, Missouri, with their perforated stamps on half title and title leaves, ink stamps on versos of title leaves. Library number written along fore-edge of page 13 of volume one; a few early leaves tanned and stain on page 159 of volume three, otherwise internally crisp and clean, a nice copy overall. (#153282)

        Elementi dell'arte statistica

1808. CAGNAZZI de Samuele Luca. Elementi dell'arte statistica. Parte prima e seconda. Napoli, nella Stamperia Flautina, 1808-1809. In 8vo; pp.XXIV,224; VIII,336. Due tavole spieghevoli. Legatura coeva in mezza pelle, titolo e fregi in oro al dorso. Edizione originale rara. Luca de Samuele Cagnazzi (Altamura, 28 ottobre 1764-Napoli, 26 settembre 1852). Einaudi I, 775.

Travels in Asia and Africa; including a Journey from Scanderoon to Aleppo, and over the desert to Bagdad and Bussora; A Voyage from Bussora to Bombay, and along the Western Coast of India; A Voyage from Bombay to Mocha and Suez in the Red Sea; and a Journey from Suez to Cairo and Rosetta in Egypt.

London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, and Orme, 1808 - Quarto (263 × 208 mm). Recent half calf to style, marbled boards, red morocco label, compartments enclosing elliptical roundels formed by gilt gallery and disc roll. Frontispiece somewhat browned, a little creased and with a small repair at the inner margin, overall a little browned, a minor paper repairs to corners of a few leaves, slight damp cockling in the lower margin, particularly towards the rear, but remains a very copy. Frontispiece of Baghdad, plate of Antioch, both uncoloured aquatints. First edition. Little is known of Parson's origins, he was probably born in Bristol, the son of a merchant captain. "In early life he visited many countries in command of merchant vessels, an occupation that suited a man 'naturally fond of novelty, and remarkably inquisitive'" (ODNB). He unsuccessfully tried to establish himself as a merchant in Bristol, but in 1767 was approached by the Turkey Company to become their "consul and marine factor" at Iskenderun, Aleppo's port, where he worked for six years before ill-health forced him to resign. Subsequently he travelled extensively for "commercial speculation, making several journeys in Asia Minor in 1772–4, and travelling from Iskenderun through the mountains to Aleppo. From there he crossed the desert to Baghdad, where he stayed between May and October 1774. He travelled up the Euphrates to Hillah and downriver to Basrah, where he was during the siege by a Persian army in 1775. He next visited Bombay, and then – ever inquisitive – made a lengthy voyage along the west coast of India as far as Goa, returning to Bombay early in 1776. In 1778 he travelled via the Red Sea and Egypt, and visited Mocha, Suez, Cairo, and Rosetta. Having returned to Europe in the same year he retired to Leghorn, where he died in 1785." He left his manuscript account to his brother-in-law, the Revd John Berjew of Bristol, whose son, the Revd John Paine Berjew, edited it for publication. Parsons was as curious and attentive traveller, his observations giving "insights into the various places that he visited, including Bombay, Mocha, and Cairo. Everywhere he took much interest in commerce, government, and ways of life", of particular interest are his account of the preparations at Cairo for the inundation of the Nile, and of its effects; and his description of "the 216 groups making up the grand procession of pilgrims to Mecca". Abbey notes an octavo edition of 1802, apparently in error. Abbey, Travel 348; Atabey 927; not in Blackmer; Gay 104; Hamilton, Arcadian Library 12649. [Attributes: First Edition]

Travels in Africa : performed by Silvester Meinrad Xavier Golberry in the western parts of that vast continent : containing various important discoveries : with a particular account of the situation, extent, towns, rivers, lakes, mines, minerals, fisherie 2 Volumes

London: Jones and Bumford,. Fine with no dust jacket. 1808. Second Edition. Hardcover. This is an extremely scarce set of Golbery's extensive account of his travels in Africa inThe set is in fair antiquarian condition. It is a married set, with Vol. I slightly smaller than Vol. II, but the title pages and pagination are as they should be. Volume I has a folding plan of the Island of Goree at the frontis as well as a folding chart of the Senegal River. Vol. II has a frontis plate of an elephant, two plates of indigenous Africans (including one indicating that these natives are free men), two plates (duplicate) of a two-humped Dromedary camel (!), one plate showing a boa constrictor attacking a tiger, and one plate with a view of Isle St. Louis in the Senegal. The large map of Africa is not present. All text pages are present, [ii], 362, [vi] 373, [xvi] and 6 plates at the rear. The books are 12mos measuring 7” x 4” and 7.25” x 4,25: Both are bound in what appears to be the original bindings. Vol. I has calf spine and corners with marbled hard covers which are quite worn. Interior is foxed with browning, some old ownership signatures, but otherwise clean and unmarked. Vol. II has a paper spine with blue hard paper boards, spine covering mostly perished but book still holding together. Interior blanks are gone, first plate and title page quite foxed, rear plates cleaner, but otherwise clean and unmarked. A worn set but one that is textually complete with most plates and folding plans. Golbery's account of his travels in Western Africa provide an excellent overview of the indigenous people, their customs, habits and industry. It includes much on gold mining and the natural history of the region. Golbery (1742-1822) was encouraged to go on a travel adventure by Louis XVI, who was upset by Capt. Cook's naval exploits for the rival England. Louis wanted to show the territorial superiority of France and the French had just taken Senegal back in 1783. France's power in Africa and favorable local circumstances made it possible for Golbery to attain important discoveries in the interior of the continent. Golbery – who was profoundly anti-slavery – celebrated the end of French slavery in Africa in the book (sadly, Napoleon shortly thereafter restored slavery). ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .

Marmion. A Tale of Flodden Field

Printed by J. Ballantyne and Co. for Archibald Constable and Co., Edinburgh; and William Miller, and John Murray, London, Edinburgh 1808 - [10], 377, [1], cxxvi pp. Second state of the first impression with cancels on three leaves (c1, B1, X3). One of 2000 copies issued. The poem concerns Lord Marmion who is after a favorite of Henry VIII, the wealthy heiress, Clara de Clare. He implicates her fiance, Sir Ralph De Wilton, in a treasonable plot, but eventually De Wilton has Marmion unmasked just as the battle of Flodden Field (one of the greatest disasters in Scottish history [1513]) begins. Marmion is killed in the battle while De Wilton regains his honor, estates, and Clara. The book was a tremendous success, despite its exceedingly high price, with at least three editions issued the same year. NCBEL III, 370. Ruff 59 (see pp.49-53). Front board very tender but threads still holding, joints rubbed, some minor rubbing along top edges and a few bands, otherwise a crisp, tight copy, gilt glowing, with some faint scattered foxing. A beautiful production. Full fine tooled pebbled calf, raised bands, gilt decorated compartments, outer gilt rules, elaborate inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, sewn-in bookmark [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Receipt for 122 Slaves signed by N. J. Bayard

1808. Very Good. Holograph document. Single half sheet. 20 x 14cm. Written on one side only. Dated July 8th, 1808. Two vertical and horizontal folds. Minor splitting along folds. Receipt for "122 negros" from "Wm Lindsy Jun." Included 71 sold, minus 1 returned by Henry Sadler, 14 died, 33 delivered to Wm Lindsy and 4 remaining "subject to order of Wm Lindsy Jun." Location not given, but possibly Havana. The relation between Bayard and "Lindsy" is unclear. A death rate of about 11% is in line with Coughtry's estimate of an average mortality rate of about 12% on the slaving voyages covered in "The Notorious Triangle." A William Lindsey shows up in that book [at pages 279 and 284] as the captain of slave ships sailing from Bristol, Rhode Island in 1805 and 1807 and delivering their cargos of slaves to Havana. The slaves covered by this receipt may well have been brought from Africa after the Federal ban on importation of slaves into the United States took effect on January 1, 1808.
