Painting from an Etruscan vase [Pl. LXII]

[Paris: P.Didot l'Ainé for Dubois Maisonneuve, 1808-1810]. Hand-coloured line engraving by A. Clener, on wove paper. Very good condition. 8 7/8 x 15 1/2 inches. 16 1/2 x 22 1/8 inches. A spectacularly beautiful image from a source work for the style which became known as the neo-classical revival or federal style. This plate is from an extremely scarce work titled Peintures de Vases antiques... appelés Etrusques. Using the great collections of antiquities at Malamaison, the Musée Napoleon, the Bibliothèque impériale, and the Sèvres porcelain manufactury as his source, the publisher, Dubois Maisonneuve, stated that his intention was to provide a series of plates of the highest quality illustrating the breath-taking scenes depicted by the unknown masters who decorated the Etruscan vases of antiquity. The plates were also intended as exemplars for contemporary artists, with the publisher noting that the images offered a wonderful source of inspiration: a sentiment that is still true today. Cf. Brunet II, 848; cf. Blackmer 1129

An Examination of the Constitutionality of the Embargo Laws

1808. Blake, Francis. An Examination of the Constitutionality of the Embargo Laws comprising a View of the Arguments on that Question Before the Honorable John Davis, Esquire, judge of the District Court for Massachusetts, in the case of the United States vs. Brigantine William, Tried and determined, at Salem (Mass.) September term, 1808. To Which is Added the Opinion Pronounced By the Court, on the Constitutional Question, Arising in the Trial of the Case. [Worcester, MA]: Printed at Worcester by Goulding and Stow, 1808. 61 pp. Octavo (8-1/2" x 5-1/4"). Stab-stitched pamphlet bound into recent period-style quarter calf over marbled boards, endpapers renewed. Toning, light foxing to a few leaves, internally clean. * Sole edition. The American merchant marine thrived during the early years of the Napoleonic wars. Remaining neutral and trading freely with Great Britain and France, who were occupied with warfare rather than commerce, American traders contributed greatly to the expansion of the U.S. economy. Beginning in 1805, however, France and Great Britain began to restrict and punish U.S. trade to their enemies. President Jefferson responded with Non-Intercourse and Embargo Acts (1807, 1809), which aimed for a restoration of free American trade through economic pressure. It had a devastating effect on the U.S. economy and was extremely unpopular in New England and the Mid-Atlantic states, which had benefited the most from the maritime economy. Tried in Salem, MA, United States v. Brigantine William was, in effect, a referendum on Jefferson's embargo. The decision, reported at 28 Federal Cases 615 (D.C., D. Mass. 1808), upheld the constitutionality of the embargo laws. Cohen, Bibliography of Early American Law 11226.

A New System of Chemical Philosophy

Manchester: Printed by S. Russell, 125, Deangate, for R. Bickerstaff, Strand, 1808 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Manchester: R. Bickerstaff, Strand, 1808 (Part I), 1810 (Part II). 8vo. (204x125 mm). Part I: viii, [2], 220 pp., with four leaves of plates. Part II: [8], 221-560 pp., with four leaves of plates. Occasional light spotting and dampstains, contemporary quarter calf (hinges repaired), some wear to spine ends, rubbed. ---- Dibner 44; Horblit 22; PMM 26; Sparrow 47. - First edition. While the idea that all matter is composed of singular, indestructible particles goes back to speculative philosophers and scientists (Democritus and Lucretius among the ancients, Newton among the moderns), the great exposition of such a theory and its physical implications is by John Dalton (1766-1844), as presented in his New System of Chemical Philosophy. Here, for the first time, Dalton argued that each of the éléments of Lavoisier - as defined in 1789 - 'is composed of atoms all alike ... the composition of each being constant' (PMM 261), the identity of each atom being established by its particular weight. Taking the lightest atom (hydrogen) as his integer, Dalton found that oxygen weighed 6.5 times as much, sulphur thirteen times as much, and so on, providing here (also for the first time) a 'periodic table' of the then-known elements: see pp. 213-15, and p. 219 and the facing plate. He proposed to express the age-old problem of chemical composition in terms of the number of atoms of each contributing element that combined into the smallest unit (later termed a 'molecule') of any compound substance; this model of all physical matter proved confirmable through experiment, and has dominated chemical theory (with modifications) ever since. Dalton's emphasis on the indestuctablity of matter was also 'new' in 1808: see DSB, quoting his famous assertion that 'we might as well attempt to introduce a new planet into the solar system, or to annihilate one already in existence, as to create or destroy a particle of hydrogen' (DSB, p. 212)..
