AMERICAN ORNITHOLOGY; OR, THE NATURAL HISTORY OF THE BIRDS OF THE UNITED STATES

Bradford and Inskeep; Samuel F. Bradford 1808-14; 1824, Philadelphia - 353 x 270 mm. (14 x 10 5/8"). Nine volumes. FIRST EDITION of volumes I-VI and IX (with Sabin's First Issue points for volume I); volumes VII-VIII from the reissue of 1824. 19th century red straight-grain morocco, gilt and blind-tooled borders, raised bands, compartments tooled and lettered in gilt, gilt dentelles. WITH 76 FINE HAND-COLORED PLATES AFTER ILLUSTRATIONS BY THE AUTHOR. Title page and a few other leaves with small embossed stamp of the Pavlovsk Museum (in Cyrillic), Vol. I with the bookplate of Herbert McLean Evans on pastedown, some evidence of removed bookplates or labels in a few volumes. Fine Bird Books, pp. 155-57; Anker, pp. 211-12; Zimmer, pp. 679-81; Bennett, p. 114; Reese 3; Sabin 104596 & 104597. Edges and corners a bit rubbed, spines slightly sunned, some faint scratches and a few minor stains on the boards, but THE ORIGINAL UNRESTORED BINDINGS REMARKABLY WELL PRESERVED AND ALTOGETHER ATTRACTIVE. Some minor offsetting from the plates, a touch of soiling to title page of volume I and plates 23 and 24 in volume III, about half the pages in volume VI noticeably foxed and toned (as in all copies we could trace, because of different paper stock used), but the other volumes IN UNUSUALLY FINE, BRIGHT, CLEAN CONDITION INTERNALLY, AND ALL OF THE PLATES (even those in the sixth volume) CLEAN, SMOOTH, AND PLEASING. This is an unusually attractive contemporary copy of a foundational work in the study of birds, the first scientific work with color plates published in America, and the inspiration for Audubon's epoch-making work on the subject. Although a few books on American ornithology were published in Europe prior to the present work, this set was far superior both in artistry and in the quality of the scientific information it contained. It was also enormously influential to generations of ornithologists that came after Wilson. Serendipitously, as DNB tells us, Wilson (1766-1813) actually met Audubon on a trip in 1810, during which the author gathered sketches of new birds and advertised the volumes he had already published. Although Audubon lacked the funds to purchase a set, "seeing what Wilson was achieving inspired [him] to publish his own illustrations after Wilson's death." We may hardly wonder at the young Audubon's amazement; according to Bennett, this was "the first truly outstanding American color plate book of any type" and is "absolutely basic as a collectors' item, [while being] somewhat unjustly overshadowed by the enormous and more beautiful Audubon giant folios, actually printed in Great Britain." Volumes I-VII were all published during the author's lifetime, while Volumes VIII-IX were issued after his death by his friend and editor George Ord (who wrote the text for the final volume, though using Wilson's original plates). Ord (1781-1866) later reissued Volumes VII-VIII in 1824 with revised nomenclature and other changes to the text. Our copy contains these two reissued volumes, along with the first editions of the others. (Apparently this make-up is not uncommon--Zimmer notes the same composition in the Newberry's copy.) Our set has a distinguished provenance, containing the stamp of the Pavlovsk Museum, once a great palace constructed by Catherine the Great for her eldest son. The more recent bookplate belongs to the noted embryologist Herbert McLean Evans (1882-1971), whose vast collection of books related to science and medicine went mainly to the Harry Ransom Center. This work is almost always found with significant browning and foxing; in our set, only Volume VI contains such condition issues (as is virtually always the case), while the remaining volumes are remarkably well preserved. This is an unusually attractive contemporary copy of a foundational work in the study of birds, the first scientific work with color plates published in America, and the inspiration for Audubon's epoch-making work on the subject. Although a few books on American ornithology were published in Europe prior to the [Attributes: First Edition]

Edinburgh: by George Ramsay and Company, for Archibald Constable and Company [and 2 others], 1808 - Quarto (288 x 224 mm). Later-19th-century half calf, raised bands gilt to spines forming blind-ruled compartments, black morocco label, comb-marbled sides and edges. First separate edition, originally published in octavo as part of the second edition of Bruce's Travels (1805), and "now reprinted in the quarto form, with considerable additions and emendations" (Preface). When Bruce died in 1794 his reputation was still in doubt; Murray, who also edited the second and third editions of his Travels, "did much to confirm that James Bruce had indeed made a notable contribution to what he himself called 'the noblest of all occupations, that of exploring distant parts'" (Buisseret, The Oxford Companion to World Exploration, vol. 1, 128).         Narrative of the Expedition To The Baltic: With An Account of the Siege and Capitulation of Copenhagen; including the Surrender of the Danish Fleet. By an Officer employed in the Expedition.

London, Brettell for Lindsell, 1808. 8vo. Entirely uncut in the publisher's paper-backed boards with ms. title lable to spine; pp. xi, 307, two hand-coloured engraved maps; re-backed at an early state, head of spine defective, boards a little spotted, remnants of bookplate, a little offsetting from maps, even light toning to text; a good copy of a great rarity. First edition, privately published. Dedicated to William Shaw Cathcart, the military leader of the operations against Copenhagen and Danish forces, this anonymous account was 'written principally to beguile those solitary hours which fall to the lot of most military men, and to preserve a private memorial of the events which occurred during the operations in Zeeland, without any view to publication' (author's Advertisement). Besides being a blow-by-blow account of the Baltic operations, this volume contains valuable descriptions of the reaction of the population of Copenhagen to British occupation. 'In the summer of 1807 it became clear to Lord Castlereagh that the French might commandeer the Danish fleet stationed in Copenhagen. To prevent this, Castlereagh sent Admiral Gambier and Cathcart to take control of the fleet and the city. The British arrived at the end of August and immediately tried to negotiate a surrender with Major-General Peiman, the commander of Copenhagen's military forces. This proved ineffectual and by 1 September they had placed mortar and gun batteries around the city and had blockaded Stralsund, the nearest Danish port capable of assisting Copenhagen. Having strengthened their position, Gambier and Cathcart once again asked Peiman to surrender the city and the fleet. He refused and emphasized his resolution by not allowing the women and children to leave the city. The British batteries began to shell Copenhagen on 2 September. This pounding continued until 6 September and articles of surrender were signed on the next day. The British forces then took control of the citadel and arsenal and began to repair the naval vessels that the Danish had tried to scuttle ... Although his Copenhagen victory had enabled the British army to impound naval supplies and vessels, the British public remained divided in its opinion of the episode. Opponents of the attack were especially appalled by the number of women and children who died in the siege.' (ODNB on Cathcart). This controvery explains why there are no immediate publications about the 1807 siege, and why this book is so rare and was published privately. The only copy in COPAC is the one in the British Library; KVK locates one further copy, in the Danish Royal Library, with only one map.

Delance, Paris 1808 - Folio, a fine complete copy, collates as: title-page with engraved vignette, engraved title-page, 122 plates depicting gardens and chateaux (of which 58 full-page, 60 half-page, and 4 quarter-page), together with an additional 3 maps (of Malmaison, Ermenonville and the country around Paris), 8 quarter-page engravings on 2 plates in the Repton style with intact overlays, and one plate with 21 small technical figures; in contemporary red half morocco. One of the first works on contemporary landscape architecture for gardens and a highly influential work on French eighteenth-century garden and landscape design. Published at the height of Napoleon's First French Empire, Laborde's work is of central importance to the history of Malmaison, and provides the best contemporary overview of the house and its extensive grounds, marking it out as a companion to the more famous botanical works of Ventenat and Bonpland: "Rien n'a été négligé pour y rassembler tout ce qui peut servir à l'étude de la Botanique."The introduction discusses the history of gardening, with a discourse on the Greeks and Romans, the creation of scientific gardens, Montaigne, Louis XIV and Versailles, and the rise of modern natural history: it is as good a mission statement for Enlightenment botany as one could find. Although Laborde is at pains to distinguish the new chateaux from those of the Ancien Régime - at one point launching a rather telling attack on the old taste for chinoiserie, for example - the grandeur of these Napoleonic era houses is noteworthy. The main part of the book is divided into sections which study actual gardens. In this section the main French text appears in simultaneous German and English translation (the latter a quite remarkable innovation for a work of this date). Pride of place is given to Malmaison, both as homage to Napoleon, but also in recognition of the fact that it was Malmaison which set the agenda for European gardens of the early nineteenth century. There is an overview of how the park has been laid out - including the comment that it is "remarkable for a number of foreign animals" including a pair of black swans from New Holland - before each plate is described in detail. For Malmaison alone there are seven full-size plates depicting the fine gate house; the chateau seen from the drive (complete with the curious campaign-style portico at the front door); Napoleon himself taking a promenade around the rear of the house (the classical structure at far left no longer stands); the lake behind the house; a view of the gardens showing the hot-house in situ; a close-up of the hot-house ("more elegant" than that of Schönbrunn or Kew); and a view of the lake of Saint Cucufat which was once part of the much more extensive grounds. There are also four half-size plates, two showing the grounds of the sheep-fold, and two of the dairy, important parts of the garden now often disregarded.Taken together, these 11 plates are the most comprehensive and important contemporary suite of views of Malmaison, much copied and studied since to help understand how the garden was planned and run. The hot-house is an important record of a building, no longer standing, which was then the centre for the cultivation of Australian and Pacific exotics in Europe. The Malmaison section concludes with a map of the grounds (here bound slightly out of order). The other major houses noticed are: Mortefontaine, then owned by Napoleon's elder brother Joseph-Napoleon Bonaparte (plates 12-27); Ermenonville, the house of the Marquis René de Girardin built in honour of the ideas of Rousseau (plates 28-43 and unnumbered map of the grounds); and Mereville, the home of the Marquis Jean-Joseph de la Borde, the grounds of which included both a cenotaph to the memory of Captain Cook, but also a memorial column to de Girardin's two sons Edouard and Ange Auguste who had died at Lituya Bay in California in 1786 on the La Pérouse expedition (plates 44-57).

Tardieu, cm 79x192, stampata in 4 lastre. Tardieu, cm 79x192. Printed from four plates conjoined. Very rare large chart of the Mediterranean Sea, based on "les déterminations astronomiques les plus recentes, sur les meilleures cartes marines et terrestres, remarques des pilotes et journaux de navigation par J.A.B. Lapie (fl. 1779 - 1850) was French cartographer and engraver active in the early part of the 19th century. He was born at Mezieres in 1771, died in 1850; in 1814 became director of the topographical cabinet of the king, was, from 1818 he was responsible for the direction of the new topographic map of France, and had the greatest part in the execution of this magnificent work. He published a classic Atlas (1812), which was improved in several successive editions, and a Universal Atlas of Ancient and Modern Geography (1828), one of the best of his era.

A Reply to the Strictures of the Edinburgh Review; On the Foreign Policy of Marquis Wellesley's Administration in India; comprising an examination of the late transactions in the Carnatic. The third edition.

London: T. Caddell and W. Davies, 1808 - Octavo. Contemporary tan half calf, marbled paper sides, titles gilt to brown label to spine, spine gilt in compartments, edges speckled brown. Minor loss to foot of spine, wear to extremities, faint marginal mark to pp. 256–257; an excellent copy. Third edition. This work is a reply to an allegedly "unprecedented attack" on Richard Wellesley's administration as Governor-General of Bengal by the Edinburgh Review in 1807. The Edinburgh Review published a review of Robert Orme's Historical Fragments of the Mogul Empire (1805) in which the editors "passed some strictures on the general policy of Lord Wellesley's administration, and particularly on some arrangements which were adopted in the year 1801 for the security of the public interests in the Carnatic". Wellesley (1760–1842) was Governor-General of Bengal from 1797 until 1805, when he retired, "in the face of severe criticism". This work is a defence of Wellesley and a direct response to the comments made in the Edinburgh Review, described at the time as part of "a malignant party cry raised against Lord Wellesley". The London Literary Review described Campbell (1766–1839), as "perfectly qualified to discuss a subject which had excited great attention", and this work as "no less distinguished by its classical elegance than by the candid and temperate manner in which the strictures of his lordship's adversaries are noticed". The work proved popular; the first edition was published in late 1807 with three further editions released in 1808. This edition is uncommon, with just one copy traced institutionally on OCLC at the British Library. The London Review, Volume 52, 1807, pp. 449–451.

Paris 1808 in Buchform herausbringt.

        The Poetical Works

London: Printed for J. Johnson, W. J. and J. Richardson, R. Baldwin [& 18 others in London],, 1808. From the text of the Rev. Henry John Todd. With a critical essay by J. Aikin. 4 volumes, duodecimo in half-sheets (158 x 96 mm). Contemporary red marbled calf (unsigned but attributed by Comte de Caumont), decorative gilt smooth spines with scrolling floriate motif head and tail, gilt banding, twin black labels, sides with two-line gilt border enclosing scrolling floriate roll tool border, marbled edges and endpapers, gilt scrolling floriate roll tool on turn-ins. Engraved portrait frontispiece of Milton by Cromek and 20 plates by Neagle, Cooke, Thomson and others after Stephen Rigaud. Armorial bookplates of Sarah Phillott (born Stanton Prior, Somerset, 1804; died Axbridge, Somerset, 1880; described in censuses as "of independent means" and "landed proprietor" - she was certainly a discerning collector as a number of books in similarly fine bindings do appear in commerce); 20th-century bookplate (volume I) of Robert Hayhurst, Lancashire retail chemist and bibliophile, a discriminating collector of 18th-century literature in well-preserved contemporary bindings. Spines lightly sunned, minor rubbing to extremities, a touch of foxing in places. A lovely set. Second Rigaud edition, his illustrations first paired with Newton's version of the text in 1801; Todd's edition (also 1801) "remained the standard edition for fifty years" (ODNB). Stephen Rigaud's work is said to have influenced Blake's interpretation: "it seems likely that by the time he came to make his Paradise Lost designs Blake was already acquainted with those of Stephen Rigaud… [whose] designs are related in a number of ways to Blake's in terms of imaginative suggestion" (Stephen C. Behrendt, The Moment of Explosion: Blake and the Illustration of Milton, 1985, p. 122). This is not true of all the plates, but some have a distinctive Blakean power. A penciled note describes this delightfully bound set as being from the atelier of Auguste-Marie, Comte de Caumont (1743–1839), a descendent of a landed Normandy family who arrived in London from revolutionary France around 1790. It is generally accepted that de Caumont was not himself a binder, but rather confined his activities to finding patrons, keeping the accounts and overseeing the running of the workshop. In April 1814 de Caumont returned to France with Louis XVIII and apparently abandoned bookbinding. "In England... he is considered a very great binder, in an age when English bookbinding was temporarily at a high level, and actually far ahead of contemporary French binding" (Ramsden, French Bookbinders 1789-1848, p. 49). While in London he hired some of the leading binders of the day, including Cordavau, Hering, and Kalthoeber, the latter considered perhaps the finest craftsman of the period, but "because de Caumont employed so many different finishers it is difficult to attribute a distinctive style to his bindery" (Maggs, Bookbinding in the British Isles, II 264). A particularly pretty set.

        The Microcosm of London.

London R. Ackermann -1810 1808 - Three volumes, 4to., 3 engraved title pages, 3 engraved dedication leaves, 104 finely hand-coloured aquatint plates after Rowlandson and Pugin, contemporary russia, covers with broad gilt borders, neatly rebacked to style, all edges gilt, a handsome set. The Microcosm was the first major colour plate book published by the celebrated nineteenth century publisher, Rudolph Ackermann (1764-1834). It originally appeared in monthly parts, usually by subscription, between 1808 and 1810. Each issue cost seven shillings and included four coloured plates. It later appeared in its final bound folio format of three volumes, each containing over thirty full-page hand-coloured aquatints depicting London's principal buildings in the nineteenth century. The Microcosm was a new undertaking in that it treated Regency London pictorially, and ranged over new and ancient buildings and meeting places, capturing the mood of London at the time. Life in London during the Regency era was distinctive for its architecture, literature, fashions, and politics. Socially, it was a combination of two extremes, with extravagance and opulence for the aristocracy with their affluent buildings to the overcrowded slums and poverty endured by the poor. It was an era of economic uncertainty caused by the Napoleonic Wars, and social unrest due to the Industrial Revolution and its introduction of machine-based labour over manual labour. The three volumes are laid out in the form of a dictionary, with the buildings listed alphabetically for ease of reference. From the introduction, Ackermann puts forward his intentions in producing such a work. It is aimed at those inhabitants of London who are either too busy to appreciate the architecture surrounding them, or those who are largely familiar with it, but not in great detail. It would also appeal to visitors to the city for the first time as a source of reference. Two-thirds of the buildings included no longer exist, which adds to its appeal today. These include The Pillory, The Old Bailey, King's Bench Prison, Royal Cockpit in Birdcage Walk, Brooks' Subscription House, India House of Charles Lamb, and King's Mews (now the National Gallery). (University of Reading). Pugin supplied the architectural drawings which have an accuracy and serene beauty which provide the perfect contrast to Rowlandson's figures of the population of London engaged in their everyday life. "The most magnificent [book] in artistic scope, admirable from its encyclopaedic readiness to guide us through all aspects of life concealing little was the Microcosm of London. A good copy of the Microcosm is a fine work indeed, first among Ackermann's major books, a notion of all London open to view, the world of poor or rich, wretched or mighty. The London book was a true Microcosm: charities, churches, prisons, fairs, courts, markets, theatres, hospitals. The alphabetic order of appearance was more effective than more obvious divisions. for we have them mixed, the book like life." (Franklin). Abbey Scenery 212; Tooley 7; Prideaux pp121-4. Franklin 49-54. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
