Leipzig [i. e. Lyons, Pelzin], 1808. - 8vo. (4), 425, (3) pp. With large folding table "Tableau du cours du mouvement social". Slightly later calf-backed marbled boards, flat back lettered in gilt, edges marbled to match boards. First edition of the author's first book, containing the essence of his principle of Association (or the union between men), driven by universal human passionate attraction but hampered by the forces of civilization. According to Fourier, an important precursor to Marx, social harmony can only be based upon this principle, and he was convinced that material abundance would be its result. The application of this principle by his followers in various utopian communes was little successful, but the impact of Fourier's profound insight into human nature and civilization on social and socialist theory can hardly be underestimated. While Marx and Engels severely criticized Fourier's thought as unhistorical, they praised him for his attacks on 19th century moralism as "impuissance en action". - First and last leaves mildly duststained; marginal edge flaws to last and another leaf without affecting text. Del Bo p. 5. Kress B. 5351. Goldsmiths' 19750 (2 copies). Not in Einaudi. En français dans le texte 218. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Ramsgate, with a View of the new Light-House

Published by I. & W. Macgavin, No. 107 New Bond Street, London 1808 - Coloured aquatint. Printed on wove paper. In excellent condition with the exception of a small brown mark in the lower left corner of plate. Slight creasing through center of image. Image size: 13 1/2 x 20 inches. A pretty view of Ramsgate Pier, from Philippe Loutherbourg's great work "Picturesque Scenery of Great Britain." This impressive aquatint is plate two of Phillip Jacques Loutherbourg's seminal work "Picturesque Scenery of Great Britain." This accomplished text is comprised of six large aquatint views engraved after Loutherbourg's acclaimed paintings. The work, which was first engraved in 1801 by J. C. Stadler, was later re-engraved in 1808 by J. Hill. Reminiscent of Rowlandson's superb paintings, this image depicts the stormy docks of Ramsgate pier. While a group of hardy sailors converse at ease, a party of three figures are battered by the fierce winds that beat the shoreline. The son of a court painter in Darmstadt, the versatile artist Philippe Jacques Loutherbourg was born in Fulda, Germany and was a pupil of J. H. Tischbein and Carle Vanloo and Francis Casanova the elder in Paris. His romantic landscapes, battle scenes, portraits, and biblical subjects were highly esteemed and lauded by influential colleagues such as Diderot. He frequently exhibited at the Salon and became a venerated member of the Académie Royale in 1767. In 1771, he moved to England, where he was employed as the principal scenery designer at London's Drury Lane Theatre. His creative and minutely detailed sets revolutionized the genre of scene painting, and he soon began dabbling in costume design. Loutherbourg once again astounded contemporaries in 1782 with his pioneering invention of the "Eidophusikon," a novel variety of moving panorama that was accompanied by music. His substantial and varied oeuvre also included book illustrations and a series of aquatints of British scenery that was published in 1801 and 1805. Aside from a brief trip to Switzerland in 1782, he remained in London for the duration of his life and became heavily engrossed in mysticism. Abbey, Scenery of Great Britain and Ireland, in Aquatint and Lithography 1770-1860 , no.6, plate 2.

Duisburg u. Colleçao dos decretos, etc., desde 22 out. 1807.

Contemporary ink inscriptions to verso of upper wrapper and recto of frontispiece.

[Attributes: First Edition]

AMERICAN ORNITHOLOGY; OR, THE NATURAL HISTORY OF THE BIRDS OF THE UNITED STATES

Bradford and Inskeep; Samuel F. Bradford 1808-14; 1824, Philadelphia - 353 x 270 mm. (14 x 10 5/8"). Nine volumes. FIRST EDITION of volumes I-VI and IX (with Sabin's First Issue points for volume I); volumes VII-VIII from the reissue of 1824. 19th century red straight-grain morocco, gilt and blind-tooled borders, raised bands, compartments tooled and lettered in gilt, gilt dentelles. WITH 76 FINE HAND-COLORED PLATES AFTER ILLUSTRATIONS BY THE AUTHOR. Title page and a few other leaves with small embossed stamp of the Pavlovsk Museum (in Cyrillic), Vol. I with the bookplate of Herbert McLean Evans on pastedown, some evidence of removed bookplates or labels in a few volumes. Fine Bird Books, pp. 155-57; Anker, pp. 211-12; Zimmer, pp. 679-81; Bennett, p. 114; Reese 3; Sabin 104596 & 104597. Edges and corners a bit rubbed, spines slightly sunned, some faint scratches and a few minor stains on the boards, but THE ORIGINAL UNRESTORED BINDINGS REMARKABLY WELL PRESERVED AND ALTOGETHER ATTRACTIVE. Some minor offsetting from the plates, a touch of soiling to title page of volume I and plates 23 and 24 in volume III, about half the pages in volume VI noticeably foxed and toned (as in all copies we could trace, because of different paper stock used), but the other volumes IN UNUSUALLY FINE, BRIGHT, CLEAN CONDITION INTERNALLY, AND ALL OF THE PLATES (even those in the sixth volume) CLEAN, SMOOTH, AND PLEASING. This is an unusually attractive contemporary copy of a foundational work in the study of birds, the first scientific work with color plates published in America, and the inspiration for Audubon's epoch-making work on the subject. Although a few books on American ornithology were published in Europe prior to the present work, this set was far superior both in artistry and in the quality of the scientific information it contained. It was also enormously influential to generations of ornithologists that came after Wilson. Serendipitously, as DNB tells us, Wilson (1766-1813) actually met Audubon on a trip in 1810, during which the author gathered sketches of new birds and advertised the volumes he had already published. Although Audubon lacked the funds to purchase a set, "seeing what Wilson was achieving inspired [him] to publish his own illustrations after Wilson's death." We may hardly wonder at the young Audubon's amazement; according to Bennett, this was "the first truly outstanding American color plate book of any type" and is "absolutely basic as a collectors' item, [while being] somewhat unjustly overshadowed by the enormous and more beautiful Audubon giant folios, actually printed in Great Britain." Volumes I-VII were all published during the author's lifetime, while Volumes VIII-IX were issued after his death by his friend and editor George Ord (who wrote the text for the final volume, though using Wilson's original plates). Ord (1781-1866) later reissued Volumes VII-VIII in 1824 with revised nomenclature and other changes to the text. Our copy contains these two reissued volumes, along with the first editions of the others. (Apparently this make-up is not uncommon--Zimmer notes the same composition in the Newberry's copy.) Our set has a distinguished provenance, containing the stamp of the Pavlovsk Museum, once a great palace constructed by Catherine the Great for her eldest son. The more recent bookplate belongs to the noted embryologist Herbert McLean Evans (1882-1971), whose vast collection of books related to science and medicine went mainly to the Harry Ransom Center. This work is almost always found with significant browning and foxing; in our set, only Volume VI contains such condition issues (as is virtually always the case), while the remaining volumes are remarkably well preserved. This is an unusually attractive contemporary copy of a foundational work in the study of birds, the first scientific work with color plates published in America, and the inspiration for Audubon's epoch-making work on the subject.       Edinburgh: by George Ramsay and Company, for Archibald Constable and Company [and 2 others], 1808 - Quarto (288 x 224 mm). Later-19th-century half calf, raised bands gilt to spines forming blind-ruled compartments, black morocco label, comb-marbled sides and edges. Rubbed, occasional browning, short nick to fore edge of sig. Dd2, the text unaffected, plates and maps spotted, and with damp-staining to lower outer corners, short closed tears to map stubs sometime tape-repaired verso. A good copy. First separate edition, originally published in octavo as part of the second edition of Bruce's Travels (1805), and "now reprinted in the quarto form, with considerable additions and emendations" (Preface). When Bruce died in 1794 his reputation was still in doubt; Murray, who also edited the second and third editions of his Travels, "did much to confirm that James Bruce had indeed made a notable contribution to what he himself called 'the noblest of all occupations, that of exploring distant parts'" (Buisseret, The Oxford Companion to World Exploration, vol. 1, 128).         Narrative of the Expedition To The Baltic: With An Account of the Siege and Capitulation of Copenhagen; including the Surrender of the Danish Fleet. By an Officer employed in the Expedition.

London, Brettell for Lindsell, 1808. 8vo. Entirely uncut in the publisher's paper-backed boards with ms. title lable to spine; pp. xi, 307, two hand-coloured engraved maps; re-backed at an early state, head of spine defective, boards a little spotted, remnants of bookplate, a little offsetting from maps, even light toning to text; a good copy of a great rarity. First edition, privately published. Dedicated to William Shaw Cathcart, the military leader of the operations against Copenhagen and Danish forces, this anonymous account was 'written principally to beguile those solitary hours which fall to the lot of most military men, and to preserve a private memorial of the events which occurred during the operations in Zeeland, without any view to publication' (author's Advertisement). Besides being a blow-by-blow account of the Baltic operations, this volume contains valuable descriptions of the reaction of the population of Copenhagen to British occupation. 'In the summer of 1807 it became clear to Lord Castlereagh that the French might commandeer the Danish fleet stationed in Copenhagen. To prevent this, Castlereagh sent Admiral Gambier and Cathcart to take control of the fleet and the city. The British arrived at the end of August and immediately tried to negotiate a surrender with Major-General Peiman, the commander of Copenhagen's military forces. This proved ineffectual and by 1 September they had placed mortar and gun batteries around the city and had blockaded Stralsund, the nearest Danish port capable of assisting Copenhagen. Having strengthened their position, Gambier and Cathcart once again asked Peiman to surrender the city and the fleet. He refused and emphasized his resolution by not allowing the women and children to leave the city. The British batteries began to shell Copenhagen on 2 September. This pounding continued until 6 September and articles of surrender were signed on the next day. The British forces then took control of the citadel and arsenal and began to repair the naval vessels that the Danish had tried to scuttle ... Although his Copenhagen victory had enabled the British army to impound naval supplies and vessels, the British public remained divided in its opinion of the episode. Opponents of the attack were especially appalled by the number of women and children who died in the siege.' (ODNB on Cathcart). This controvery explains why there are no immediate publications about the 1807 siege, and why this book is so rare and was published privately. The only copy in COPAC is the one in the British Library; KVK locates one further copy, in the Danish Royal Library, with only one map.
