Astley's Projects, in his Management of the Horse; rendering it Calm on the Road, in Harness, &c. Such Acquirements may prevent Dreadful Accidents. Being an Abridgement of his Popular and Most Valuable Book of Equestrian Education. To which is prefixed, many Excellent Remedies for the Diseases in Horses, &c.

London: Printed by T. Burton, Sold by S. Creed, 1804 - Octavo (155 × 95 mm). Contemporary quarter calf, green marbled sides, double fillet roll forming compartments to spine gilt, titles gilt to second on red morocco label, vellum corners, marbled edges. Armorial bookplate of Lord Gwydyr to front pastedown. Contemporary ownership inscription of F. W. Campbell of Birkfield, Ipswich stencilled to front free endpaper in black ink. Spine lightly rubbed with label fully intact, small spill-burn to frontispiece with no loss to image, negligible marking in black ink to signatures E1v and E5r. An excellent copy. Folding frontispiece. In 1768 Astley established his first "'riding school' in a fenced wayside field on Lambeth Marsh named Halfpenny Hatch. Styling himself the English Hussar, he promised such feats as straddling two cantering and jumping horses, doing headstands on a pint pot on the saddle, and a parody of riding by a foppish tailor" (ODNB). By the 1780s he had amphitheatres in London, Paris and Dublin, and was widely recognised as the foremost equestrian trainer and performer of the day. He also was known for his far-sighted views of the feeding and management of horses, and was one of the first subscribers to the London Veterinary School. The present work was a handy pocket-sized abridgement of his popular System of Equestrian Education, first published 1801, and proves uncommon, with just four copies on Copac (BL, Imperial College, Oxford, and Edinburgh) and OCLC adding seven, all in the US. F. W. Campbell (1782-1846), eldest son of noted Scottish traveller Donald Campbell, pursued a military career before abandoning his family estate in Argyllshire and moving to Birkfield Lodge, near Ipswich (ODNB). His daughter, Sophia Jane Campbell, married Peter Charles Burrell, the 4th Baron Gwydyr at St Mary's, Stoke, Suffolk, in 1840. His grandfather, also named Peter Burrell, served as Master of Horse to the Prince of Wales. Altick, The Shows of London, p. 119; Smith, Early History of Veterinary Literature, II, p.134.

LES MONUMENS ANTIQUES DU MUSÉE NAPOLÉON, DESSINÉS ET GRAVÉS PAR THOMAS PIROLI, avec une explication par J. G. SCHWEIGHAEUSER, publiés par F. et P. PIRANESI, freres.

      - Cuatro volúmenes en perfecto estado de conservación. Tome premier:186 pp.+80 grabados a toda página. Tome second: 182 pp.+1 h.+80 grabados a toda página. Tome troisième: 180 pp.+80 grabados a toda página. Tome quatrieme: 159 pp.+78 grabados a toda página. Enc. en tela actual. 23,8x18. A Paris, a L'Ancien Collége de Navarre, An XII(1804)/1806. "Al final de la obra se da cuenta de la duración de la impresión: "Cet Ouvrage commencé le 5 Avril 1804, a été terminé le 5 Decembre 1806".Quoique, en général, la gravure en soit assez lâchée et souvent trop lestement faite, elle rend, assez ordinairement, le caractère de ses modèles, et peut être ne désirerait-on pas plus de soin à ces planches, si on ne les considérai[t] que comme des croquis spirituellement touchés, d'une pointe vive légère, qui réveille suffisamment le souvenir des productions de la sculpture antique. Au reste cet ouvrage, dont Ie texte est écrit avec goût et une saine érudition par MM. Schweighaüser le fils et Petit-Radel, de l'académie des inscriptions, est loin de contenir toutes les richesses du Musée royal des antiques. Il est vrai aussi qu'il offre beaucoup de monumens que nous ne possédons plus, et dont les souvenirs excitent nos regrets ; mais comme la publication en a été terminée en 1806, il doit naturellement y manquer toutes les nombreuses acquisitions qui depuis ont, sinon réparé, du moins adouci une partie de nos pertes. Cette production classique, et d'une lecture agréable, est, ainsi que la notice de Visconti, de la plus grande utilité pour bien connaître les antiques du Musée à ses diverses époques jusqu’en 1815."         Three Tracts on the Syntax and Pronunciation of the Hebrew Tongue;

London: by W. Calvert for Vernor and Hood, F. and C. Rivington, J. White, J. Hatchard, W. Dwyer, and L. Pennington, at Durham,, 1804. With an appendix addressed to the Hebrew nation. Octavo (187 x 110 mm). Uncut in original boards, white paper backstrip, manuscript title to spine. With the individual title pages and half-titles for each tract, the register continuous except for the appendix. Spine slightly rolled and chipped, a few small markings to covers. An excellent, entirely unsophisticated copy. First and only edition. Sharp (1735-1813) is best remembered as one of the first abolitionists, through whose efforts "the anti-slavery movement gained public attention and sympathy and ? transformed itself from a benign climate of opinion to a highly organized campaign" (ODNB); Thomas Clarkson identified him as the founder of the movement. He was also an esteemed amateur linguist and theologian, having taught himself Hebrew and Greek while apprenticed to a London linen-draper in order to debate with two of his fellow apprentices, one of whom was Jewish, the other a member of the Unitiarian Socinian sect, which denied the divinity of Christ. His Remarks on the Uses of the Definitive Article in the Greek Text of the New Testament (1798; 3rd edn, 1803) "argued strongly for the divinity of Christ and struck a blow against the Socinian position" (idem). "Dr Henry Lloyd, Regius Professor of Hebrew at Cambridge, lauded Sharp for his insights into the pronunciation of Hebrew, as did Bishop Horsley on Sharp's new insights on Hebrew syntax ? A refrain seen in many reviews ? was that Sharp's treatment was the finest in print, the ablest defence of a view, a great insight that would stand the test of time" (Wallace, Granville Sharp's Canon and its Kin, p. 47).

An inquiry into the nature and origin of public wealth, and into the means and causes of its increase.

8vo., (8) 482pp., without the half-title but with the folding table, occasional minor foxing and a few insignificant rust marks, contemporary half calf over marbled boards, spine simply gilt with red morocco lettering piece. A very good copy with the binder's ticket on front pastedown of J. Tushingham of Chester. An important commentary on Smith's Wealth of Nations. "Specifically, Lauderdale asserts that: (1) the maximisation of private riches does not lead to maximum public wealth and welfare; (2) labour is not the cause of value or an adequate measure of new value; (3) division of labour is not a major factor in economic growth; (4) parsimony and saving are frequently a public detriment as they may lead to over- investment and a capital glut; and (5) government tax revenues applied to rapid debt reduction will reduce aggregate consumption, deflate profits and capital values, and result in economic distress." (New Palgrave 3, p.137)."To Lauderdale belongs the credit of having been the first to put forward a connected theory on the nature of profit, in the form of a theory, and not of scattered observations. Lauderdale's importance in the history of economics lies not in his conclusions but in the fact that he was the first in England to consider systematically the fundamental conceptions on which the science is based. In this respect alone he is in advance of Adam Smith." (Palgrave (1926) II, p.574).

A letter to the Right Honorable the Earl Poulett, Lord Lieutenant and Custos Rotulorum of His Majesty's County of Somerset,

8vo., 55 (1)pp., including the half-title, bound in late 20th century quarter leather over marbled boards. A very good copy. [bound with], Substance of a speech, delivered by T.S. Champneys, Esq. late Lieut. Colonel Commandant of the Selwood Forest Legion, to the Corps, on his resignation of the command, Monday, March 12th 1804. Frome, Printed at the desire of the Corps. By Crockers. [1804]. 8vo., 17 (1)pp. A very good copy. First edition, privately printed. Apparently very rare: not in COPAC nor in BL. Not in Bristol City libraries. [bound with], Facts, attending the prosecution of Thomas Swymmer Champneys, Esq. one of the Magistrates of the County of Somerset, for an alleged assault and false imprisonment: preferred by Thomas West: with introductory observations. Bristol: printed by Joseph Routh, Narrow Wine Street. 1815. 8vo., 33 (1)pp., probably wanting a half-title, a few leaves lightly stained else a good copy. First edition, privately printed. Apparently very rare: not in COPAC nor in BL. Not in Bristol City libraries. A collection of three rare pamphlets which together illustrate the ups and downs of the Swymmer/Champneys family. Based at Orchardleigh, near Frome, the family's wealth was founded on the slave trade and extensive property holdings in the West Indies. T.S. Champneys was a J.P., a D.L. for the County of Somerset, and, in 1804 at least, Lieutenant Colonel Commandant of the Selwood Forest Legion, Volunteer Cavalry and Infantry. His downfall was completed in the 1820s, by which time he had squandered what was left of the family's fortune, and when he ended up in the insolvent debtors court which declared his the largest amount of debt ever filed in the court since its establishment in 1813, with debts and liabilities upwards of ?429,000. The prosecution of Champneys for unpaid debt in 1814/15 vividly illustrates the deteriorating reputation of a once highly regarded Somerset/Bristol family. Thomas Swymmer Champneys (1769-1839) succeeded to the title of 2nd Baronet Champneys of Orchardleigh, Somerset, on the death of his father in July 1821. In 1831 his name was legally changed to Thomas Swymmer Mostyn-Champneys.

French text, 8vo, approximately 190 x 125 mm, 7½ x 5 inches, woodcut title vignette, 4 woodcut illustrations printed on 3 pages, 1 large folding plate of the Minerve, plus at the end 1 EXTRA folding plate (probably a facsimile) of a fantasy flying machine which seems to come from an Italian work, pages: 36, (4), bound in modern half calf over cloth sides, raised bands and gilt decoration to spine, contrasting gilt lettered labels, top edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Corners and hinges very slightly rubbed, small blemish to upper hinge, front inner paper hinge cracked, 2 very small repairs to edge of front endpaper, slightly foxed throughout, mostly light, the folding plate is faintly foxed at the edges, there is a small light stain at the top outer corner, a tiny piece missing from the lower corner and a very short closed edge tear at the inner edge (repaired on reverse), the unnumbered illustrated pages at the end are very faintly foxed at the edges, otherwise a very good copy. Étienne - Gaspard Robert (1763 - 1837) was a famous Belgian stage magician pioneering projection techniques for phantasmagoria shows, at the same time pursuing an academic career as professor of physics at Liege, specialising in optics. He also had vast experience with balloons - he was Commandant des Aerostiers during the war, serving under General Jourdain in Belgium and Holland in 1803/4, providing valuable observations on the enemy troops and movements from tethered and untethered balloon observing stations; he is also regarded by some as the inventor of the parachute. There was nothing about the balloon described in this pamphlet that would have worked, and Robertson knew it, intending his work to be more of caricature of existing attempts in flight than as a science fiction creation. The balloon was to have been one of the biggest ever designed with a 150 foot diameter for a load of 161,000 lbs including 60 scientists, plus some ladies who have their own quarters, and it was to be fitted out with a library, church, exercise area, chemistry laboratory, music room, food and wine storage, kitchen, the only place where a fire is allowed, etc. It is also provided with a small ship underneath for sea landings. The first edition which is extremely scarce was first published in Vienne, France in 1804. This is mentioned on the title page and see Tissandier, Bibliographie Aeronautique page 33. Memorial of the Agents of the New England Mississippi Land Company to Congress : With a Vindication of Their Title At Law Annexed

City of Washington : A. & G. Way, 1804-01-01. Hardcover. Very Good. Ocatvo. 7, 109 p. ; 22 cm. Bound in publisher's paper wraps. In custom made box. Small stain to front wrap. Wear to extremities. Library stamp to second page from NYPL dated 1902. Contemporary owners name to head of title page of Thomas Dwight, Massachusetts representative during the 8th Congress. Dwight's notations to some pages. Shaw & Shoemaker 7540. Sabin 52708 OCLC 1484388
An extremely important Yazoo document. The Yazoo land scandal was a massive fraud perpetrated from in the mid-1790s by Georgia governor George Mathews and the state legislature. They sold large tracts of land in the Yazoo lands, in what are now portions of Alabama and Mississippi, to political insiders at very low prices in 1794.
With the end of the American Revolutionary War, most of the states of the new Union attempted to extend their territorial claims from the Proclamation line of 1763 to the lands towards the Mississippi River.
The Yazoo scandal began after the Bourbon County Act was dissolved in 1788 under pressure by the federal government, a secret society was formed called the Combined Society, formed with purpose money by land speculation. The group gained power in the state legislature and in the following year, three companies, The South Carolina Yazoo Company, The Virginia Yazoo Company (which was headed by Patrick Henry), and the Tennessee Company built by the society’s interests, formed to buy land from Georgia. These venture were exposed and the deal for the land fell through in 1792, though the members of the Society still wished to develop Georgia lands.
In 1794, four companies were formed, with several principal being from the original members of 1789 purchases and high ranking Georgian politicians to purchase 40 million acres of land for $500,000. On January 7, 1795, Governor Mathews signed into law a bill authorizing the sale of the 40,000,000 acres known as the Yazoo Act. When the details of the sale were revealed, public outrage was widespread, and people protested to federal officials and Congressmen. Jared Irwin and U.S. Senator James Jackson led the reform efforts: Irwin was elected Governor of Georgia and, less than two months after taking office, signed The Rescinding Act on February 13, 1796 nullifying the Yazoo Act.
On the same day of The Rescinding Act, 11 million acres of the Yazoo land was sold to the New England Mississippi Land Company, who felt the repel was illegal, for $1,138,000, a 650% profit in 13 months' time. The lands west of Georgia would be ceded to the United States government in the Compact of 1802 for 1.25 million. This last act threw land holders into a limbo, and claims by third-party owners who had innocently purchased land from the original companies would not be resolved till 1816.
With the last private sale prior to the Compact of 1802, coupled with the 11th amendment, the landmark case of Fletcher v. Peck would occur. John Peck of Massachusetts bought land from someone who could trace his title to the state of Georgia from 1795, when the Act was legal. He then sold 15,000 acres to Robert Fletcher of New Hampshire, based on a warranty deed, warranting good title. The two were obviously citizens of different New England states, and in June 1803 Fletcher sued Peck in federal circuit court in Massachusetts on diversity grounds, alleging that the title was bad, and requesting the return of his money. This landmark Yazoo document attempts to serve the land holders affected by the 1802 Compact, the fledgling court case, as well as an attempt to repel the sale by the State of Georgia.

PROCES-VERBAL DE LA RECEPTION DU GENERAL DE DIVISION ERNOUF, EN QUALITE DE CAPITAINE-GENERAL DE LA GUADELOUPE ET DEPENDANCES [caption title]

Guadeloupe, 1804. 4pp. Quarto, on a single folded sheet. Minor foxing and soiling. Very good. Untrimmed. Rare document describing the arrival and greeting of Jean Augustin Ernouf to the island of Guadeloupe. Ernouf was appointed captain-general of Saint Domingue and Guadeloupe in 1804, replacing Jean-Baptiste Raymond Lacrosse, who had held the office for two years. Ernouf was sent to restore order and production to the colonies after the disastrous slave rebellion, which he successfully accomplished within the first year of his appointment. This interesting document describes his arrival by frigate and the conversation which ensued between Ernouf and Colonial Prefect Daniel Lescallier. A rare imprint, apparently unrecorded.

London: Printed for B. Crosby and Co, 1804. Vividly illustrated English translations of Ovid's Ars Amatoria, Remedia Amoris, and Amores, the classic Roman guides to finding, keeping, and (when necessary) recovering from a lover, with practical guidance for every reader: "The men are arm'd, and for the fight prepare; / And now we must instruct and arm the fair. / Both sexes, well appointed, take the field, / And, mighty Love, determine which shall yield." Featured translators include John Dryden and William Congreve. The neoclassical engravings by William Hopwood, the editor affirms, "have been selected with the greatest attention to moral propriety," even if Ovid himself "has been rather too warm in the colouring of his favourite subject."

Milano, Genio, 1804. Lex 8vo. Large-paper copy, completely uncut, on extra-thick paper, in the original wrappers of hand-blocked patterned paper. With a few contemporary hand-written annotations/corrections and marginal markings. An extraordinarily fine copy with minimal wear. 78 pp. + 1 f. errata. Frontispiece portrait and two engraved plates (one - with the famous sheep - folded).. A magnificent copy, in completely original condition, of the rare first edition (printed in a small number only) of this milestone in the history of plastic surgery, Baronio's immensely significant masterpiece, which constitutes the first example of purely scientific research in the history of plastic surgery. Furthermore, it is in this work that the possibility of skin transfer (grafting) is demonstrated for the first time, marking the beginning of a new era for plastic surgery. "The basic principle of free transplantation . . . constituted, when fully understood and applied, the greatest single advance [in plastic surgery] of the nineteenth century." (Gnudi & Webster, p 328)."Degli Innesti Animali, has to be considered an epoch-marking work for several reasons. It is the only treatise on plastic surgery written two centuries after Tagliacozzi's De Curtorum Chirurgia (1597). It is the first experimental account on a successful autologous skin graft in an animal with a detailed report. It is the first example of purely scientific research in the history of plastic surgery." (ISAPS - International Society of aesthetic plastic surgery)."It is a landmark in the development of plastic surgery procedure after two centuries of neglect." (Hagströmer).Describing his experiments with skin grafting on animals (most famously on the sheep, which is depicted in the book), Baronio laid the foundation for human skin grafting, which was only successfully done for the first time 13 years later, in 1817. "Baronio carried out trials on a total of 27 animals (rams, goats, dogs, and even a mare and a cow), always with the same positive results. These studies were of immense significance, serving first and foremost to demonstrate that grafts could be transferred and survive, a fact up to then had not been scientifically proven. Indeed, this possibility was dismissed by leading surgeons including Alfred Armand Velpeau who... asserted that "this strange operation will never be practiced" Furthermore, by comparing the results of grafts carried out under different conditions and different time intervals, Baronio succeeded in clarifying many of the biological aspects of the grafting and healing processes." (Santoni-Rugiu & Sykes: A History of Plastic Surgery, p. 123)."The publication of "Degli Innesti Animali" (On grafting in Animals) by Giuseppe Baronio (1759-1811) in 1804, the first account of experimental autologous skin transplantation in a ram, marks the beginning of a new era for plastic surgery - the demonstration that skin transfer in the same individual is possible and successful. Degli Innesti Animali, the most important work of Baronio, is a 78-page book, printed on thick paper, issued in 1804 in Milan by Tipografia del Genio. The book is rare and seldom appears on the market. It is divided into seven parts and includes three engraved illustrations. The first one shows the portrait of the Count Carlo Anguissola, to whom the work is dedicated, who sponsored the publication, although this is not mentioned, and provided animals and stables for making Baronio's experiments possible. In parts one and two, Baronio traces the origin of nasal reconstruction by quoting the Brancas of Sicily, Tagliacozzi, and the Maratha surgeons from India. The Tagliacozzi's arm flap technique is extensively described, whereas the Indian forehead flap procedure is also illustrated by an engraved plate. Part three is devoted to transplantation of teeth in human beings, a procedure first reported by John Hunter; whereas part four explains the grafting of spur and "other animal parts into the cock's comb." In part five, Baronio reports the method of healing severed skin parts by using certain balms, as proposed by some charlatans. Part six, the most important section of the book, deals with the original Baronio studies on skin graft in a ram. He carried out three types of experiments on the farm of the estate of the Count Anguissola at Albignano, in the surroundings of Milan. In doing this, Baronio was supported by two Milanese surgeons G.B. Monteggia (1762-1815) and G.B. Palletta (1748-1832).In the first experiment, he excised a piece of skin from the dorsum of a ram and grafted it immediately on the opposite side without suturing it, but attaching it with an adhesive. After eight days the graft took perfectly. In the second experiment, on the same ram, the time lapse was 18 minutes. Baronio noticed that the graft had some difficulties in taking (Author's note: probably superficial necrosis at it occurs in full thickness skin grafts). In the third experiment, always on the same ram, the time lapse was longer and the graft did not take. He concluded that the shorter the time for transplantation the better in terms of survival rate. A beautiful engraved illustration of a ram with skin grafts positioned along its dorsum accompanies the text. Regrettably, Baronio was not aware that the thickness of the skin was the most important factor for skin graft survival. Very possibly in the third experiment he harvested the skin with the underlying adipose tissue, thus jeopardizing the graft take.In the last part of the book, part seven, he created wounds on different animals (goat, dog, sheep) and covered them with aluminum paste to isolate wounds from the air to avoid potential contamination. He noticed that this method facilitated wound healing.Degli Innesti Animali, has to be considered an epoch-marking work for several reasons. It is the only treatise on plastic surgery written two centuries after Tagliacozzi's De Curtorum Chirurgia (1597). It is the first experimental account on a successful autologous skin graft in an animal with a detailed report. It is the first example of purely scientific research in the history of plastic surgery. For this reason, the founding members of the Plastic Surgery Research Council established the image of the Baronio ram with skin graft over its dorsum as the emblem of the organization. ELEMENTS OF BOTANY: OR OUTLINES OF THE NATURAL HISTORY OF VEGETABLES

London, 1804. 19th-century boards rebacked with paper, original printed label. Covers moderately soiled. Foredge and bottom edge untrimmed. Internally fresh, with occasional minor foxing in text and on plates. A very good copy. First London edition, following the original Philadelphia edition of the previous year. The first basic botany written by an American, it is an important contribution to American natural history. Barton was a native of Lancaster, Pennsylvania; later professor of natural history at the University of Pennsylvania; and an author with a wide range of interests. An important American botanical work, and the basis for much which followed. This London edition contains occasional notes by the British editor. In our experience it is even rarer than the American edition. This book is notable as one of the few volumes which Lewis and Clark carried across the continent with them in 1804-6. SABIN 3806. PRITZEL 437. NISSEN 83. TAXONOMIC LITERATURE 321. MEISEL III, p.363. MacPHAIL, BENJAMIN SMITH BARTON AND WILLIAM PAUL CRILLON BARTON 6. GREAT FLOWER BOOKS 48.
