Neue Himelsbeschreibung oder Sehr leichte Methode die Sternbilder durch die äussere Gestalt der vornehmsten Sterne unter denselben kenen zu lernen; New Description of Heaven

Walchschen Kunstverlag, Augsburg 1804 - Copper plate engraving with original hand color. Sheet measure 22.5" x 27" This incredible 1804 celestial map by Johann Walch depicts the stars and constellations of the Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere in beautiful detail. The chart also includes the equator, ecliptic and date settings. Below the two hemispheres, a tabular representation of the stars in the night sky is also featured. The chart is centered on a poem by Albrecht von Haller roughly translates to "Choice to go deep in the air, and the vast sky was alive when walking, running to meet standards in all our stars. Who knows: the stars are perhaps a seat of the ghosts, as the vicious one rules here, there is the virtue master". The map is in good condition with minor wear along original centerfold and foxing. Minor verso repairs along edges and near bottom margin. Johann Walch, born in Germany in 1757, was a printer, painter, draftsman, engraver, cartographer and publisher. This is a beautiful example of his work.

He graduated from the University of Edinburgh Medical School with an MD in 1825 later returning the practice in Dublin at Meath Hospital. he went on to create two important works on cardiac and pulmonary diseases A Treatise on the Diagnosis and Treatment of Diseases of the Chest (1837) and The Diseases of the Heart and Aorta (1854) as well as one of the first treatises on the use of the stethoscope. In June 1861 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society as: "The Author of A work on the Diseases of the Lungs, and of a work on the Diseases of the Heart and Aorta and of other contributions to Pathological Science.         The Heathery; or a Monograph of The Genus Erica: containing coloured engravings, with Latin and English descriptions, dissections, etc, of all the known species of that extensive and distinguished tribe of plants

London : Printed by Richard Tayor for the Author, 1804 A good part set of the 1st edition of this rare and comprehensive work. This set consists of 252 hand coloured plates with their descriptions bound in 3 volumes, but, we have not been able to confirm that they are from Volumes I - V with 2 extra plates. According to research [Cleevely, Nelson and Oliver, 2003] the work was first published in 6 volumes (with 50 plates and descriptions per volume) the first 4 being published in the years 1805-1807, but the remaining 2 published later: V not before 1816 and VI in late 1828. Complete sets are the exception! This set is in contemporary half leather bindings with marbled boards. The spines have gilt lining and title and volume labels. Contents: Vol I: hand coloured title page; plain title page to vol I dated 1804; dissertation 2pp; mode of culture 2pp; introduction 2pp; 82 plates with accompanying text. Vol II: title page Vol II 1804; Dissertation continued; 84 plates with accompanying text plus text for E. discolor. Vol III: title page Vol III dated 1806; dissertation concluded 1p; plate for E.discolor and 85 further plates with text. The work is therefore lacking 48 plates and descriptions, 3 title pages and the index. The bindings are clean with wear to the leather, particularly at the top and bottom of the spines and to the spine joints. Each volume has 'Stouthall' hand written on the front pastedown, and 2 volumes have the bookplate of R Wilbraham Falconer. Contents are generally very clean with the occasional spot or mark. The plates are beautifully coloured. Each plate is hand numbered but sadly the numbering starts anew in each volume so does not help with collation. There is the odd outbreak of spotting eg title page to Vol II and a few text pages have browning eg those opposite plates 56. 62, 68 and 73 in the 3rd volume. Please enquire if you would like us to check for particular specimens, or you would like more images.

Manuscript Document Signed ("Louis Bonaparte"), rejecting a request by Inspecteur Norel of Chambéry to be returned to active duty, and with a short Autograph addition (seven words) confirming that Bonaparte had submitted Norel's name for the Légion d'honneur

Paris 1804 - Signed with a flourish in pen and ink on a manuscript document, with brief addition in Louis Bonaparte's hand. 4to. Excellent autograph of Louis Bonaparte (1778-1846), brother of Napoleon I, named by him King of Holland in 1806, and the father of Napoleon III. This document informs the recipient that the Emperor has already filled a position and that, accordingly, his request to return to active dury is declined. The blow is sweetened by acknowledging that a request for admission to the Légion d'honneur would be accepted, with a note in Louis Bonaparte's hand "auquel j'a déjà fait la demande". Old fold, faint marginal soiling, one trace of old paper clip.         Enumeratio plantarum officinalium horti botanici Taurinensis Augustae Gallorum Imperatricis Josephinae. Turin, Typographia Phylantropica, 1805. 8vo in 4s. Contemporary marbled boards.

      - Pritzel 364; Stafleu & Cowan 20051 (cf. 277 ); WorldCat (6 copies); not in Cat. Lindley Libr. Rare catalogue of medical plants in the botanical garden of Turin. Giovanni-Batista Balbis, physician and botanist, was a pupil of Carlo Allioni, and succeeded him as professor of botany and director of the botanical garden at Turin. When the latter published his Flora Pedemontana, which contained descriptions of more than two thousand species of plants, there were some inevitable omissions. Allioni and some of his pupils, including Balbis, made additions to the Flora Pedemontana. Several of these additions were published in the editions of Catalogus plantarum Horti Botanici Taurinensis appearing from 1804 to 1814, when Balbis was dismissed from his position because he served the French during the Napoleonic occupation. With a manuscript annotation on title-page "Donné par M. Balbis", an unobtrusive stamp of Société Linnéenne de Lyon on page 11 and another stamp, lower right corner cut off of title-page. Boards rubbed, spine tattered. Good copy.

Ueber den Schädel Kants. Ein Beytrag zu Galls Hirn- und Schädellehre, von Dr. Wilhelm Gottlieb Kelch, Privatlehrer der Medizin und Prosector am anatomischen Theater zu Königsberg.

      - Königsberg, bey Friedrich Nicolavius, 1804, kl.-8°, VIII, 61, (2) pp., Pappband d.Zt.; zarter kleiner Namenszug von 'H.L. Ebel' auf Titel. Seltener Erstdruck! He was also an esteemed amateur linguist and theologian, having taught himself Hebrew and Greek while apprenticed to a London linen-draper in order to debate with two of his fellow apprentices, one of whom was Jewish, the other a member of the Unitarian Socinian sect, which denied the divinity of Christ. His Remarks on the Uses of the Definitive Article in the Greek Text of the New Testament (1798; 3rd edn, 1803) "argued strongly for the divinity of Christ and struck a blow against the Socinian position" (ibid.) "Dr Henry Lloyd, Regius Professor of Hebrew at Cambridge, lauded Sharp for his insights into the pronunciation of Hebrew, as did Bishop Horsley on Sharp's new insights on Hebrew syntax A refrain seen in many reviews was that Sharp's treatment was the finest in print, the ablest defence of a view, a great insight that would stand the test of time" (Wallace, Granville Sharp's Canon and its Kin, p. 47). Apparently Original Full Calf, 5 Bands, Morocco Spine Labels, Gilt Volume Number And Gilt Devices In Four Other Compartments, Tooled Borders On Covers, Tooled Edges. Some Wear, Joints Beginning To Crack, But Quite Solid And Attractive, Very Well Preserved, Very Good +. Bookplates Of "George Rooke / Coll. Mert. Soc./1822", And Similar Pencil Inscriptions In Each Volume, The Longer Reading "G. Rooke E Coll. Mert. From My (----) Mr. Lightfoot". George Rooke Was A Student At Merton And Later Honorary Canon Of Durham. Joseph Barber Lightfoot (1828-) Was An English Theologian And Bishop Of Durham, Usually Known As J.B. Lightfoot. From 1854 To 1859 He Edited The Journal Of Classical And Sacred Philology. In 1857 He Became Tutor And His Fame As A Scholar Grew. He Was Made Hulsean Professor In 1861, And Shortly Afterwards Chaplain To The Prince Consort And Honorary Chaplain In Ordinary To Queen Victoria. In 1866 He Was Whitehall Preacher, And In 1871 He Became Canon Of St Paul's Cathedral. His Sermons Were Not Remarkable For Eloquence, But A Certain Solidity And Balance Of Judgment, An Absence Of Partisanship, A Sobriety Of Expression Combined With Clearness And Force Of Diction, Attracted Hearers And Inspired Them With Confidence. "His Personal Character Carried Immense Weight, But His Great Position Depended Still More On The Universally Recognized Fact That His Belief In Christian Truth And His Defense Of It Were Supported By Learning As Solid And Comprehensive As Could Be Found Anywhere In Europe, And By A Temper Not Only Of The Utmost Candor But Of The Highest Scientific Capacity. The Days In Which His University Influence Was Asserted Were A Time Of Much Shaking Of Old Beliefs. The Disintegrating Speculations Of An Influential School Of Criticism In Germany Were Making Their Way Among English Men Of Culture Just About The Time, As Is Usually The Case, When The Tide Was Turning Against Them In Their Own Country. The Peculiar Service Which Was Rendered At This Juncture By The 'Cambridge School' Was That, Instead Of Opposing A Mere Dogmatic Opposition To The Tübingen Critics, They Met Them Frankly On Their Own Ground; And Instead Of Arguing That Their Conclusions Ought Not To Be And Could Not Be True, They Simply Proved That Their Facts And Their Premises Were Wrong. It Was A Characteristic Of Equal Importance That Dr Lightfoot, Like Dr Westcott, Never Discussed These Subjects In The Mere Spirit Of Controversy. It Was Always Patent That What He Was Chiefly Concerned With Was The Substance And The Life Of Christian Truth, And That His Whole Energies Were Employed In This Inquiry Because His Whole Heart Was Engaged In The Truths And Facts Which Were At Stake. He Was Not Diverted By Controversy To Side-Issues; And His Labor Was Devoted To The Positive Elucidation Of The Sacred Documents In Which The Christian Truth Is Enshrined." In 1874, The Anonymous Publication Of Walter Richard Cassels' Supernatural Religion Created Considerable Sensation. In A Series Of Papers In The Contemporary Review, Between December 1874 And May 1877, Lightfoot Undertook The Defense Of The New Testament Canon. The Articles Were Published In Collected Form In 1889. About The Same Time He Was Engaged In Contributions To W Smith's Dictionary Of Christian Biography And Dictionary Of The Bible, And He Also Joined The Committee For Revising The Translation Of The New Testament. In 1875 He Became Lady Margaret's Professor Of Divinity In Succession To William Selwyn.

Legatura coeva in mezza pelle con punte, filetti in oro a catenella al dorso con titolo inciso in oro su tassello rosso. Tagli spruzzati di rosso. Ottimo esemplare. Edizione originale, rara.
