Ueber den Schädel Kants. Ein Beytrag zu Galls Hirn- und Schädellehre, von Dr. Wilhelm Gottlieb Kelch, Privatlehrer der Medizin und Prosector am anatomischen Theater zu Königsberg.

      - Königsberg, bey Friedrich Nicolavius, 1804, kl.-8°, VIII, 61, (2) pp., Pappband d.Zt.; zarter kleiner Namenszug von 'H.L. Ebel' auf Titel. Seltener Erstdruck! Febr. 1813 am Lazarethfieber. Leipz. Lit. Zeit. 1813. Pag. 816. Hall A.L.Z. 1813, num 83. Pag. 664" Ch. Gottl. Jöcher, Allg. Gelehrten-Lex., 7 - - Siehe - DBA I 635, 452-454; II 691, 227.         Three Tracts on the Syntax and Pronunciation of the Hebrew Tongue; With an appendix addressed to the Hebrew nation.

London: by W. Calvert for Vernor and Hood, F. and C. Rivington, J. White, J. Hatchard, W. Dwyer, and L. Pennington, at Durham, 1804 - Octavo (187 × 110 mm). Uncut in original boards, white paper backstrip, manuscript title to spine. Spine slightly rolled and chipped, a few small markings to covers. An excellent, entirely unsophisticated copy. With the individual title pages and half-titles for each tract, the register continuous except for the appendix. First and only edition. Sharp (1735–1813) is best remembered as one of the first abolitionists; Thomas Clarkson identified him as the founder of the movement. He was also an esteemed amateur linguist and theologian, having taught himself Hebrew and Greek while apprenticed to a London linen-draper in order to debate with two of his fellow apprentices, one of whom was Jewish, the other a member of the Unitarian Socinian sect, which denied the divinity of Christ. His Remarks on the Uses of the Definitive Article in the Greek Text of the New Testament (1798; 3rd edn, 1803) "argued strongly for the divinity of Christ and struck a blow against the Socinian position" (ibid.) "Dr Henry Lloyd, Regius Professor of Hebrew at Cambridge, lauded Sharp for his insights into the pronunciation of Hebrew, as did Bishop Horsley on Sharp's new insights on Hebrew syntax A refrain seen in many reviews was that Sharp's treatment was the finest in print, the ablest defence of a view, a great insight that would stand the test of time" (Wallace, Granville Sharp's Canon and its Kin, p. 47). Apparently Original Full Calf, 5 Bands, Morocco Spine Labels, Gilt Volume Number And Gilt Devices In Four Other Compartments, Tooled Borders On Covers, Tooled Edges. Some Wear, Joints Beginning To Crack, But Quite Solid And Attractive, Very Well Preserved, Very Good +. Bookplates Of "George Rooke / Coll. Mert. Soc./1822", And Similar Pencil Inscriptions In Each Volume, The Longer Reading "G. Rooke E Coll. Mert. From My (----) Mr. Lightfoot". George Rooke Was A Student At Merton And Later Honorary Canon Of Durham. Joseph Barber Lightfoot (1828-) Was An English Theologian And Bishop Of Durham, Usually Known As J.B. Lightfoot. From 1854 To 1859 He Edited The Journal Of Classical And Sacred Philology. In 1857 He Became Tutor And His Fame As A Scholar Grew. He Was Made Hulsean Professor In 1861, And Shortly Afterwards Chaplain To The Prince Consort And Honorary Chaplain In Ordinary To Queen Victoria. In 1866 He Was Whitehall Preacher, And In 1871 He Became Canon Of St Paul's Cathedral. His Sermons Were Not Remarkable For Eloquence, But A Certain Solidity And Balance Of Judgment, An Absence Of Partisanship, A Sobriety Of Expression Combined With Clearness And Force Of Diction, Attracted Hearers And Inspired Them With Confidence. "His Personal Character Carried Immense Weight, But His Great Position Depended Still More On The Universally Recognized Fact That His Belief In Christian Truth And His Defense Of It Were Supported By Learning As Solid And Comprehensive As Could Be Found Anywhere In Europe, And By A Temper Not Only Of The Utmost Candor But Of The Highest Scientific Capacity. The Days In Which His University Influence Was Asserted Were A Time Of Much Shaking Of Old Beliefs. The Disintegrating Speculations Of An Influential School Of Criticism In Germany Were Making Their Way Among English Men Of Culture Just About The Time, As Is Usually The Case, When The Tide Was Turning Against Them In Their Own Country. The Peculiar Service Which Was Rendered At This Juncture By The 'Cambridge School' Was That, Instead Of Opposing A Mere Dogmatic Opposition To The Tübingen Critics, They Met Them Frankly On Their Own Ground; And Instead Of Arguing That Their Conclusions Ought Not To Be And Could Not Be True, They Simply Proved That Their Facts And Their Premises Were Wrong. It Was A Characteristic Of Equal Importance That Dr Lightfoot, Like Dr Westcott, Never Discussed These Subjects In The Mere Spirit Of Controversy. It Was Always Patent That What He Was Chiefly Concerned With Was The Substance And The Life Of Christian Truth, And That His Whole Energies Were Employed In This Inquiry Because His Whole Heart Was Engaged In The Truths And Facts Which Were At Stake. He Was Not Diverted By Controversy To Side-Issues; And His Labor Was Devoted To The Positive Elucidation Of The Sacred Documents In Which The Christian Truth Is Enshrined." In 1874, The Anonymous Publication Of Walter Richard Cassels' Supernatural Religion Created Considerable Sensation. In A Series Of Papers In The Contemporary Review, Between December 1874 And May 1877, Lightfoot Undertook The Defense Of The New Testament Canon. The Articles Were Published In Collected Form In 1889. About The Same Time He Was Engaged In Contributions To W Smith's Dictionary Of Christian Biography And Dictionary Of The Bible, And He Also Joined The Committee For Revising The Translation Of The New Testament. In 1875 He Became Lady Margaret's Professor Of Divinity In Succession To William Selwyn.

An essay on education; in which are particularly considered the merits and the defects of the discipline and instruction in our academies ... the second edition, corrected and enlarged.

London: Pr. for F. & C. Rivington by Bye & Law, 1804. 12mo (17.2 cm, 6.75"). 2 vols. I: xxiv, 342, [2 (1 adv.)] pp. II: iv, 412 pp. Barrow, later Archdeacon of Nottingham, originally composed this essay while at QueenÂ’s College, Oxford; it was enlarged for its first publication in 1802 and then again for this second edition. Questions of corporal punishment, religious instruction, early education, the desirability of teaching the classics, and the merits of public schools as opposed to domestic education are addressed; the two new chapters added to this edition consider dramatic performances in schools (ill-advised and likely to lead to undesirable results, according to the author) and the state of English universities.         NSTC B758. Contemporary half calf with marbled paper–covered sides, spines with later gilt-stamped leather labels; spines slightly darkened, corners and spine extremities rubbed. Pencilled bracketing and marks of emphasis; some light to moderate foxing.

Frontispiece By Hopwood, Published By W White And Dated April 1805 (!), Title, Section Title, Vii-Lxxivi, Errata, 372; Half Title, Title, Section Title, I-V,488. The Peculiar Service Which Was Rendered At This Juncture By The 'Cambridge School' Was That, Instead Of Opposing A Mere Dogmatic Opposition To The T?bingen Critics, They Met Them Frankly On Their Own Ground; And Instead Of Arguing That Their Conclusions Ought Not To Be And Could Not Be True, They Simply Proved That Their Facts And Their Premises Were Wrong.

The illustration of the volumes was supervised by Lavater's friend Henry Fuseli (described by Lavater as "one of the greatest imaginations in Rome ... everything in extremes ... hurricane and tempest") and employed the talents of Fuseli himself, Chodowiecki, Thomas Holloway, Bartolozzi and William Blake, with four of the engravings being signed by Blake. The illustrations include the famous plate of "madness", "a real scene in the Hospital of St. Spirito at Rome."

THE DANCE OF DEATH; PAINTED BY H. HOLBEIN AND ENGRAVED BY W. HOLLAR

      C. Whittingham for John Harding, London 1804 - Bound in the style of the period, blue paper-covered boards, white cloth spine, paper spine label. Engraved frontispiece portraits of both Hans Holbein and Wenceslaus Hollar. The volume consists of 27 pages of text followed by 30 full-page woodcuts with accompanying explanations. This volume includes the fold-out "Dance of Macaber". The first edition of Hollar's engravings was published in 1788 in Edinburgh, two years later in London. The engravings are based on the classic Holbein designs from 1538. The illustrations show death along side all the different classes of people, no single group was spared. 70pp. + 2-page advert at end. Size: 6 3/4" x 4 1/2" [Attributes: Hard Cover]
