Hrsg. v. Walther. - München, Scherrerschen Kunst- und Buchhandlung, 1804, 8, XVI, 168 pp., feiner Pappband der Zeit. Erste Auflage. Feines Exemplar a.d. E.G. Boring, History of experimental psychology., 2nd.Ed., 1957, pp.57-58

The Costumes of China [with] The Punishments of China.

London Bulmer for Miller and McLean 1804 - First edition. Two volumes folio (35.3 x 25.4 cm). title-page in English and French, 60 fine hand-coloured plates; 22 hand-coloured aquatint plates; slight occasional offset of plates onto text leaves. Contemporary red morocco gilt, large gilt centre-piece to covers, a fine set. Beautiful pair of these celebrated books on China, boasting over 80 hand-coloured engravings - finely bound in bright full red morocco gilt, from the renowned collection of royal bibliophile, Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester (1900-1974), son of King George V. The plates were engraved by Dadley after designs by Pu-Qua of Canton. William Miller, the publisher, wrote: "By presenting to the eye a series of judiciously selected and well executed pictorial representations, forming striking portraits of single subjects, accurately finished in the colours of the original, and aided by short descriptive essays, they give more pleasing and definite ideas of the external character, style of dress, and peculiarity of occupation, than can be acquired by any other method, except personal observation." Miller goes on to say that the subjects depicted include members of all classes of society, from public dignitaries to common labourers. Overall these volumes offer not only a superb collection of finely executed aquatints but also an insight into the nations represented for the armchair traveller.       - Four hand-colored folding engraved maps & one fine engraving. 11 pp. 4to, cont. crushed green morocco, sides bordered in gilt, spine gilt. [Strasbourg: F.G. Levrault, 1804]. First edition of this rare and handsomely illustrated work. In order to celebrate Napoleon's coronation in 1804, the city of Strasbourg initiated a series of a civil engineering and public works projects. The explanatory text details the planned bridge over the Rhine connecting Strasbourg with Kehl, an orangerie dedicated to Empress Josephine, a canal to protect against flooding and to circumvent a turbulent part of the Rhine, a performance hall, and the extension of a central boulevard. The first map depicts the portion of the river adjacent to Strasbourg and a cross-section of the new bridge to be constructed (with high- and low-water marks shown). The second presents the ornate landscaping which will surround the orangerie, as well as a smaller floorplan. The third shows the location of the new canal. The projected performance hall and prolonged boulevard are shown on the fourth and final map. The final engraving offers a ground-level view of the performance hall. Fine and attractive copy.         History of British Birds

Newcastle: Solomon Hodgson for R. Beilby & T. Bewick [etc.], 1797-1804. Two volumes, thin royal (vol. 1) and demy (vol. 2) 8vo (225 x 135 mm). Wood-engraved title vignette, illustrations, head- and tail-pieces by Bewick. Modern polished calf gilt by R. Wallace. Lacking half-title in volume 1, lightly spotted, one leaf with marginal repair. Provenance: purchased from Goodspeed's Book Shop, 1983. FIRST EDITION, volume 1 with plate at p.75 in FIRST STATE, vignette at p.285 in "uninked" state, vignette on p.22 Roscoe's Variant A, volume 2 conforms to Roscoe's Variant F. The best-known work of the famed wood-engraver Thomas Bewick. Bewick's imaginative designs and technique are said to have revived the medium of wood-engraving at this time. The work was beloved by the Brönte sisters, and Charlotte Brönte used it to provide escape for Jane Eyre when she was being bullied by her cousins and aunt at Gateshead. "Although the text and images transport Jane to 'strangely impressive' worlds, their uncanny paranormal elements frighten her and foreshadow future encounters with the supernatural. Jane is particularly drawn to the allegorical vignettes depicted in Bewick's tail-pieces" (British Library). Ayer/Zimmer I, 57; Nissen IVB 95; Roscoe 14, 17.

Weimar, Geographisches Institut, 1804. - Hand-coloured engraved map (740 x 555 mm). A fascinating 1804 map of Persia by Christian Gottlieb Reichard. It covers from the Black Sea south as far as the Gulf and east as far as Punjab in India, including the modern day nations of Iran, Iraq, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan. The map identifies numerous towns, villages, deserts, mountain ranges, river systems and a host of other topographical features. The map is color coded according to territories and boundaries. The map curiously divides the country, as the title suggests, into the Eastern and Western Empire, suggesting suspicious political evidence. Furthermore, the islands in the Gulf are also erroneously shown as independent territories, suggesting political aspirations of the time. The map represents Persia under the Qajar Dynasty. In 1794, Aga Muhammad Khan of the Qajar Dynasty overthrew Loft Ali Khan, the last Shah of the Zand Dynasty, and relocated the capital to the new city of Tehran. The subsequent era, the Qajar Dynasty, witnessed numerous military conflicts with the rising powers of Imperial Russia and the loss of much of Persia's territory. Al-Qasimi 218.

Four hand-colored folding engraved maps & one fine engraving. 11 pp. 4to, cont. crushed green morocco, sides bordered in gilt, spine gilt. The measurements and purpose of each structure are also noted. The maps are all finely engraved and hand-colored with grey borders. To the King's Most Excellent Majesty, this Map of the Island of Jamaica, constructed from actual surveys, under the authority of the Hon. House of Assembly, by whom it hath been examined, and unanimously approved

First edition. This is probably one of the most striking and sought after maps of the Caribbean Island. Its size is impressive and the aesthetical feature makes it a cornerstone for Jamaican cartography. A very large-scale map, showing physical features such as mountains, streams, and bodies of water, locations of towns and settlements, roads, mills, plantations, harbours, and offshore islands. One of Robertson's important contributions was that he delineated the new county and parish boundaries that had been established a few years earlier. It is among the early topographic maps to show an entire country (the earliest being the Carte géométrique de la France). James Robertson of Shetland (ca. 1756-1841) was Jamaica's first real surveyor in the sense that he worked as a cartographer rather than a land surveyor. He came to Jamaica around 1778 and persuaded the Council to give him a commission to survey the entire island for the sum of £5,000 whereupon he commenced surveys of the three counties and the entire island. In 1802 he returned to England to have his map published and subsequently returned to Jamaica. He soon left, however, to return to England where he died. All in all, the Jamaican Council paid him over £10,000 for his work. He is considered the father of modern Jamaican cartography. This grandiose map has been praised since its publication. See B.W. Higman, Jamaica Surveyed: Plantations Maps and Plans of the Eighteenth- and Nineteenth Centuries (Kingston: Institute of Jamaica, 1988) and D. Webster, "The Ubiquitous Scot" in The Map Collector, 56 (Autumn 1991), pp. 32-33 Very rare; copies located by OCLC: British Library, Clements (Michigan), National Library of Scotland.

Inquiry into the Nature and Origin of Public Wealth

1804. First Edition . MAITLAND, James. An Inquiry into the Nature and Origin of Public Wealth, and into the Means and Causes of Its Increase. Edinburgh: Arch. Constable; London: T.N. Longman & O. Rees, 1804. Octavo, contemporary full polished brown calf gilt, red morocco spine label. $1800.First edition of the Earl of Lauderdale's discourse on public wealth, in which he argues against Adam Smith's concept of “value.”In 1796 James Maitland, Earl of Lauderdale, called the attention of the House of Lords to the state of the public finances, but at the time did not offer a formal resolution. Instead he embarked upon a series of writings on the subject. In 1804 he published his Inquiry, which attracted considerable attention, partly because in it Maitland chose to criticize Adam Smith as “the person who has struggled most to establish the opinion, that labor may be considered as an accurate measure of value.” For Maitland, “wealth is everything that possesses utility; but individual riches possess utility and scarcity. These two elements determine value” (Roll, 307). Maitland also disagreed with Smith's contention that there is never “too much” capital and that every saver is a public benefactor (Niehans, 80, 86). Large folding table at rear. Kress 4816. Goldsmiths 18801. Interior fine. Front inner hinge reinforced, only minor scuffing to spine of contemporary calf. A near-fine copy.
