His music and Methodes (written for a six- and seven-keyed bassoon) are the most comprehensive and informative source of instructions on bassoon performance of the late 18th century. As late as 1838 Schilling observed that his 1803 Methode 'was not only the first complete manual for learning to play the bassoon in France, but in most other countries as well'. The 20 pages devoted to embellishment and extempore variation have been cited as an important source dealing with late 18th-century improvisatory practices. His musical examples were used by Almenraeder as points of departure for improving the key mechanism of the bassoon. At least three of his concertos were published in Germany as well as France and editions of the Methodes, sonatas and caprices continued to be published in Germany, France and Italy throughout the 19th century. Although his concertos and symphonies concertantes were intended for his own performance, they contain passages of virtuosic brilliance that contributed much to the development of the bassoon as a solo instrument during this time. As a soloist Ozi expanded the expressive as well as the technical capacity of the bassoon. It was observed that the bassoon took on 'in his hands, a life, a soul, and an expressive character' that was previously unattainable on the instrument. According to contemporaries, he was 'le meilleur basson de son temps'." Harold E. Griswold in Grove online

Smooth spines ruled in blind with red morocco gilt lettering labels and with volume numbers stamped in black. Board edges decoratively tooled in blind. A spectacular set."Blackstone's great work on the laws of England is the extreme example of justification of an existing state of affairs by virtue of its history Until the Commentaries, the ordinary Englishman had viewed the law as a vast, unintelligible and unfriendly machine; nothing but trouble, even danger, was to be expected from contact with it. Blackstone's great achievement was to popularize the law and the traditions which had influenced its formation. He has been accused of playing to the gallery, of flattering the national vice of complacency with existing institutions. The charge is in many respects just; but it is no small achievement to change the whole climate of public opinion Blackstone was not interested in the science of law. All law is the same to him?the law of gravity or the law of the land. The object of the latter is to distinguish between right and wrong. Rights are either the rights of persons or of things; wrongs are either public or private. These theses from the headings of the four books of the Commentaries He takes a delight in describing and defending as the essence of the constitution the often anomalous complexities which had grown into the laws of England over the centuries. But he achieves the astonishing feat of communicating this delight, and this is due to a style which is itself always lucid and graceful. This is the secret of Blackstone?s enormous influence" (Printing and the Mind of Man 212).This work was enormously successful with eight editions appearing in the author's lifetime, and "for sixty years after his death editions continued to follow one another almost as quickly" (D.N.B.).

        Das Erbtheil des Vaters

Iffland, August Wilhelm. Das Erbtheil des Vaters. Zur bie t.f. hoftheater. Wien Aus Kosten. Wein, 1803. Produced Vienna Burgtheater Oct. 29, 1802. Richel p.73. 8vo. Contemporary decorated wrappers. 142pp. plus frontispiece. Minor dampstaining. Drama in 4 acts in prose. Earlier performed Berlin 1800; Leipzig1802; Weimar 1802. First published Leipzig, 1802; Two editions of 144 pps exist: this & Frank at Augusburg. Das Erbtheil des Vaters [the father's share of the inheritance], the 52nd play of Iffland's, is an example of Familienstucke, the genre of of "meticulous if sentimental depictions of middle-class home life" for which he became popular (Carlson). In Weimar, Goethe produced 31 of Iffland's plays, as they, according to Carlson, offered relief in politically turbulent times "by their careful exclusion of any possibly disturbing reference to politics, social problems, or history." The author, August Wilhelm Iffland, (1759-1814) was a German actor, director, dramatist (B. Hannover). He entered the Court Theatre of Gotha in 1777. By 1796 he was director of the Nationaltheater in Berlin, a position he held until his death. He is thought to have influenced Goethe's views on acting. He wrote 60 plays or so and wielded an enormous influence on German drama of the time with plays filled with bourgeois emotions and realism. According to Goethe, his best play is Die Hagestolzen (The Bachelor) 1791 which was performed, in its own time, 146 times in Berlin and 115 times in Vienna. Iffland's collected Dramatische Werke in 16 vols was published Leipzig 1798-1802 and Theatralische Werke 10 vls, Leipzig 1858-60.         The Life and Posthumous Writings of William Cowper. In four volumes

06 - Chicester - J. Johnson, 1803. 06 - Chicester - J. Johnson, 1803 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. An early edition and complete set of Harvey's famous biography of Cowper. Complete in three volumes, with a supplementary fourth volume: 'supplementary pages to the Life of Cowper, containing the additions made to that work, on reprinting it in octavo'. 'With an introductory letter to the Right Honourable Earl Cowper'. Volumes I and III feature engraved frontispieces, and Volume III features an etching of Cowper's monumentby William Blake. The supplementary fourth volume featuresa frontispiece, 'engraved by Caroline Watson, Engraver to Her Majesty'. William Hayley (17451820), poet and biographer, was born on 9 November 1745 in Chichester, Sussex. Hayley revelled in being close to talented people; he enjoyed bolstering their confidences, forwarding suggestions for their career advancement, and providing seclusion at Eartham, near Chichester, Sussex (where he had moved in 1774), so that their work might continue uninterrupted. He attempted to exert a near absolute control over his friends, guiding their personal and professional lives. Some, such as George Romney and William Cowper, appreciated his suggestions and willingly acquiesced to his advice but others, William Blake included, rebelled against the suffocating friendship and preferred to distance themselves from this well-meaning man and conduct a cordial relationship from afar. Life of Cowper (1803) was a major and successful work which, including further editions, earned Hayley nearly 11,000, although perhaps this was due more to the enduring popularity of Cowper than to Hayley's own literary merit. DNB. Condition: In the original publisher's wraps. Externally, wear to the extremities. Marks to the boards and darkening to the spines. Spine labels chipped. Internally, binding loosening in places, with p. 419 of Volume II detached but present. Some scattered spotting. Copperplate ink signatures to the half titles. The front free endpaper of Volume III is partially adhered to the pastedown. Overall: GOOD ONLY..

With the armorial bookplate of I. B. Story to the front pastedowns. Vasco de Lobeira, d. 1403, was a medieval writer to whomthe prose original of the romance Amadis de Gaula was originally attributed. Joao Lobeira, c. 1233 1285, was a Portuguese troubadour of the time of King Afonso III, who is supposed to have been the first to reduce into prose the story of Amadis de Gaula.         Essai de statique chimique. 2v. Arms of French King on upper covers. Very fine

Firmin Didot, Paris 1803 - From a Royal Library Berthollet, Claude Louis (1748-1822). Essai de statique chimique. 2 vols., 8vo. viii, 543 [1]; viii, 555 [1, errata]pp. Paris: Firmin Didot, 1803. 197 x 125 mm. Tree sheep, gilt spines, French royal arms in gilt on front covers. Occasional scattered foxing, but fine otherwise. First edition. Berthollet attempted to provide chemistry with an adequate theoretical foundation so that its experimental results could be analyzed on the basis of theoretical first principles. He gave a thorough critique of the contemporary oversimplified concept of the law of chemical affinity, which had not yet been properly examined; Berthollet's main contribution to the development of this concept was his proof that chemical affinity was relative, varying with the physical conditions-quantity, temperature, solubility, pressure, physical state-accompanying a chemical experiment. He introduced the highly important concept of "chemical mass"-relative affinity combined with the mass of reactants in a chemical combination-to give the total force with which a given quantity of a substance reacted with another. He was probably the first chemist to perform an exhaustive investigation of how physical conditions affect chemical reactions, creating a molecular model of matter to explain the effects of temperature and density on chemical reactions.         Jerusalem Delivered; an Heroic PoemIn Two Volumes

London - T. Bensley, 1803. London - T. Bensley, 1803 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A translated copy of Tasso's Jerusalem Delivered, being a largely mythified version of the First Crusade in which Catholic knights, led by Godfrey of Bouillon, battle Muslims in order to take Jerusalem. Eighth edition. Translated from the Italian of Torquato Tasso, by John Hoole. Adorned withthirteen of the original fifteen, beautifully engraved plates. The work belongs to the Renaissance tradition of the Italian romantic epic poem, and Tasso frequently borrows plot elements and character types directly from Ariosto's Orlando furioso. Tasso's poem also has elements inspired by the classical epics of Homer and Virgil (especially in those sections of their works that tell of sieges and warfare). One of the most characteristic literary devices in Tasso's poem is the emotional conundrum endured by characters torn between their heart and their duty; the depiction of love at odds with martial valour or honor is a central source of lyrical passion in the poem. Complete in two volumes. Condition: In diced calf bindings with gilt detailing. Externally, both volumes are lightly rubbed with some wear to the extremities. All joints are starting, with the front board to volume one being detached. Internally, both volumes are firmly bound and bright. Very light instances of foxing. Neat copperplate ink inscription to the verso of both front free endpapers. Overall: GOOD, due to detached board.

The cession of the district of Matavai in the island of Otahaite to Capt. James Wilson for the use of the missionaries sent thither by that society in the ship Duff

London, 1803. The cession of Matavai to Capt. Wilson. 1803. London. F. Bartolozzi, published for the benefit of the Missionary Society, by W. Jeffrys & Co. 535 mm x 745 mm. Lower margin with strong foxing and soiling, some minor loss; strong colour.A striking image showing Captain James Wilson accepting the island of Matavai (Tahiti) for the use of the London Missionary Society, as a result of their missionary expedition to the Island. In 1795 the LMS was established, plans to send an expedition to Tahiti were shortly put to action and as a result, 18 missionaries under Captain Wilson sailed towards the Pacific; in 1797 King Pomare (c. 1742 ? 1803), first king of Tahiti and founder of the Pomare dynasty, granted the travellers the use of Matavai, however tensions soon appeared. As consequence to this, the mission lived until 1809, when the last of the missionaries left for Sidney. Wilson (1760 ? 1814) brought the first missionaries aboard the Duff; he became the first to establish a mission in the South Seas. "He took notice of the London Missionary Society and offered his services to captain its ship, the Duff, on a voyage to deliver missionaries to South Pacific Islands" (Hill). The plate is not common; we haven?t been able to locate any having sold at auction (AE).

The Complete Works in Ten Volumes

London - A. Strahan, 1803. London - A. Strahan, 1803 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A set ofhistorical books penned byWilliam Robertson, historian and Church of Scotland minister. The History of Scotland was published in two volumes on 1 February in London, and its reception was all that he could wish. By March Robertson found himself overwhelmed with a whole torrent of praise (Robertson to G. Elliot, March 1759, NL Scot. , MS 11008, fol. 92). A second edition was published in April, and by 1761 four had been published, with a French translation following in 1764. The book was a huge success because Robertson appeared to his readers to move Scotland into the mainstream of polite culture. His study of elocution and style had enabled him to craft prose that was harmonious, balanced, and, above all, correct metropolitan English. In the field of historical writing in particular no one had yet achieved such a magisterial style. Though occupied with church and university, Robertson was also engaged on his next history, the work that he hoped would enhance his European reputation. By the end of 1759 he was firmly decided upon the history of the reign of Charles V. Through Charles V he could explore the dynastic struggle of Charles and Francis I, leading to the overarching theme of the emergence of the balance of power in Europe, the wider context of his Scottish history. The book's structure initially was a conventional political narrative, related in chronological order and centred on Charles's life and career. After the publication of Charles V, Robertson quickly turned to a new historical project. In the book's preface he noted that he had to omit discussion of New World colonization for reasons of proportion and coherence, but he acknowledged that his account of Europe in the sixteenth century was incomplete without it. By the autumn of 1769 he began withdrawing books on America from the university library. On 28 May 1777 the History of America was published in two volumes by Strahan and Cadell in London and Balfour in Edinburgh, again to a very positive reception. Its success was even more marked on the continent, where it was considered Robertson's masterpiece (in Suard's translation), and went through nine editions between 1777 and 1780. Robertson's regained vigour also led him to a new historical work. During the 1780s his attention gradually turned to India. He had broached the question of India's contact with the West in the opening chapter of the History of America, and various personal contacts reinforced that interest. These personal connections, coupled with the opening of the trial of Warren Hastings in 1788 and the publication of John Logan's Dissertation on the Government of Asia (1787) and James Rennell's Memoir of the Map of Hindoostan (the latter, first published in 1783, was greatly admired by Robertson, who used its new 1788 edition), led him to write An Historical Disquisition Concerning the Knowledge which the Ancients had of India, which Strahan, Cadell, and Balfour published in a single volume on 4 June 1791. The Disquisition falls into two main parts: the first two-thirds is a narrative of the commercial contacts India had with the outside world from ancient times to the sixteenth century; the remainder is a long appendix describing Indian culture. The narrative portion documents, gathers, and summarizes familiar but scattered material; the appendix is broadly descriptive and more innovative, following the pattern developed in the descriptive chapters of the History of America. (DNB)Contains two folding maps and an engraved frontispiece of Charles V in Volume III of The History of the Reign of the Emperor Charles V. Armorial bookplates bearingthe name 'William Phillips'to each front pastedown. Containing volumes I, III and IVof four of The History of the Reign of the Emperor Charles V, volumes I,III, and IV of fourof The History of America, volumes I-III of three of The History of Scotland during the Reigns of Queen Mary, and of King James VI, and An Historical Disquisition concerning the.

ALs to "Citoyen Margerie." Paris, 5 germinal, an XI [March 26", 1803].

Paris 1803 - Chappe, Abraham (1773-post 1840). A.L.s. to "citoyen Margerie." Paris, 5 germinal, an XI [March 26, 1803]. 3pp. Engraved vignette on the first page depicting Mercury, messenger of the gods, flying through the clouds holding a Chappe telegraph semaphore. 240 x 183 mm. The optical telegraph system created by the four Chappe brothers-Claude, Abraham, Ignace, and Pierre-debuted in the 1790s and remained in use until superseded by the electric telegraph in the 1850s; it represents one of the first organized data networks. It came into being during a period of considerable unrest in France-the French Revolution was in full swing and France was at war with several neighboring countries. The times favored the development of an organized, nationwide system of communication that would enable France's central government to receive and transmit intelligence in the shortest possible time. The chief architect of the Chappe telegraph was Claude Chappe (1763-1805), who began working on designs for the telegraph in 1789. After experimenting successfully with visual signaling devices that used pendulums and modified clock faces, Claude and his brothers devised a semaphore telegraph consisting of a large beam (the regulator) with smaller wings (indicators) mounted at each end. These could be manipulated in various ways to signal alphabetic, numeric, and other coded symbols between stations, at a rate of one symbol every ten to thirty seconds. The first optical telegraph line, consisting of nineteen stations built between Paris and Lille, a distance of 190 km. or about 120 miles, was opened in July 1794. In August 1794 the telegraph was used to report two major French military victories; this happy news established Claude Chappe's reputation as a benefactor of his country, and insured the French government's continued support of the telegraph. By 1805 there were four main branches extending from Paris into the north, east, west, and south of France. Similar networks soon sprang up throughout Europe, particularly in Sweden, where Abraham Nicolas Edelcrantz's shutter-based optical telegraph was in use until 1888. Chappe's visual telegraph system remained operational in France until 1852, when it was superseded by an electric telegraph; at the time of its replacement, the Chappe telegraph network covered more than three thousand miles and included 556 separate stations (Singer et al. 1958, 4: 644-47; Holzmann and Pehrson 1995, 47-96). Abraham Chappe, the youngest of the Chappe brothers, was appointed an administrator of the Paris-Lille line in September 1793, and was sent to Lille by Claude to supervise the line's construction. His letter, to a newly hired line inspector, has to do with the Lille-Brussels branch of the telegraph, begun and completed in 1803.
