Tome premier (-second)

. . .Inscribed to Giovanni Fabroni

Versailles. Chavassieu-d'Audebert. Versailles: Ph.-D. Pierres; Paris: Desenne . . . , 1802. Magenta paste paper boards, printed label on front cover, light rubbing & wear. Minor foxing, a few light stains, tear in front free endpaper. Very good copy, with the author's presentation inscription on the front endpaper: "A l'illustre Professeur Monsieur Fabroni de la part de l'Auteur." The recipient was most likely Italian physicist Giovanni Valentino Mattia Fabbroni (1752-1822); see DSB. First Edition. Chavassieu-d'Audebert's charts present a thorough analysis in tabular form of the effects of temperature, atmospheric conditions and terrain on humans, animals and plants. The first chart displays the effects of temperature and humidity on health: for example, rainy weather was said to promote chronic fevers, epileptic attacks and paralysis in humans, and blight in crops. The second chart organizes temperature and climate information by month and season, describing effects on agriculture and health of various types of years (hot/dry, cold/wet, cold/dry, etc.). The third chart presents the phases of the moon and how they affect health, the effects of climate and terrain on native human, animal and plant populations, and a breakdown of the human species by geographical type.

GLI ANIMALI PARLANTI POEMA EPICO DI GIAMBATTISTA CASTI.

Milano dalla Stamperia di San Zeno 1802 16° 3 volumi Pagine X + 245 + 265 + 264 Legatura coeva in mezza pelle marrone. Piatti marmorizzati. Titolo e ricchi fregi oro al dorso. Tagli spruzzati. Filini.

Med J. A. Almquists exlibris.. Burskap i Stockholm beviljades 1796.

London: Published by Edward Orme, 1802. Hand-coloured aquatint engraving by Stadler after Colonel Ward, a skilled amateur artist and member of the Madras Army. Very good condition apart from some light soiling and minor foxing in the margins. 15 3/8 x 18 1/4 inches. 17 1/4 x 21 inches. Located in a district of Southern India that was once under British rule, the Trichinopoly Rock is a renowned landmark that dominates the town of Tiruchirapalli and overlooks the surrounding landscape. A number of Pallava cave temples are carved into the rock, on top of which sits the ornate multiple-pillared Vinayaka Temple most likely pictured here. Cf. Abbey, Travel, vol. II, 424.; cf.         The Right Hon. Lord Nelson

London: Published by Colnaghi, Cockspur Street, Dec. 21, 1802. Stipple engraving. In good condition apart from being trimmed within the plate mark on all sides. Skillfully mended tears on left and bottom margins. Images size: 20 3/8 x 13 inches. 22 5/8 x 14 7/8 inches. A wonderful print of Admiral Lord Nelson from Hoppner's famous portrait. Admiral Lord Nelson was one of England's greatest heroes; his naval victories shaped the history of Britain and sparked the formation of an empire. Nelson was sent to sea at the age of twelve and spent the majority of his life upon the ocean. As a naval leader he was a brilliant tactician, and always surprised his enemies by using audacious tactics. With intelligence and valour, Nelson won some of the most important naval battles in British history. His victories included the battle of the Nile, the battle of Copenhagen, and lastly the battle of Trafalgar, which is still remembered today as one of the greatest naval battles ever to have taken place. Trafalgar was Nelson's last and most famous victory, and it gave Britain command of the seas for a century. O'Donoghue, Catalogue of Engraved British Portraits...in the British Museum 52.

Veltheimia Abyssinica / Veltheimia d'Abyssinie [Abyssinian Kniphofia] [Pl. 186]

Paris: Imprimerie de Didot jeune, 1802-16. Stipple engraving, printed in colour and finished by hand, engraved by Chapuy. 21 x 13 7/8 inches. Pierre-Joseph Redouté was one of the world's great flower painters. Born into a family that had been painters for at least two generations, Redouté went to Paris in 1782 with his brother where they worked as scene painters for the Théâtre italien. Redouté painted flowers in his spare time. The search for subjects led him to the Jardin du Roi and eventually Gerard van Spaendonck who made him an assistant. While at the Jardin du Roi, Redouté came to know Charles-Louis L'Heritier, an amateur botanist and writer of independent means. He gave Redouté a full time job as an illustrator, instructing him in plant anatomy. Redouté's understanding of plants contributed greatly to the clarity of his depictions. But it was Redouté's work in stipple engraving and colour printing that was to be of the greatest importance. Stippling and the application of two or three colour inks to one plate were engraving innovations that Redouté brought to French printmaking, and these were brought to perfection in Les Liliacées from which this work comes. Les Liliacées is one of two Redouté masterworks, the other being Les Roses. These works demonstrate the appropriateness of the accolade "Raphael of Flowers", for one is constantly impressed by the exquisite compositional sense and clarity of vision. More than with any other painter, one sees in Redouté's flowers living, breathing beings at their most beautiful moment. Cf. Nissen BBI 1597; cf.Great Flower Books (1990), p 128; cf. Dunthorne p 231; cf. Stafleu & Cowan TL2 8747; cf. MacPhaeil, Redouteana, 10.
