Huber d.J. (gest. 1779) in Basel und von J.J. Kaufmann (1707-1782) in Pruntrut.

(Martin & Walter, I, 6287. A. de Montet, 'Dictionnaire des Genevois et des Vaudois', I, 128-129). Second Spanish edition of a classic 12th-century Arabic treatise on agriculture, known in Arabic as Kitab al-filaha and first published in a parallel Arabic and Spanish edition by the Imprenta Real in Madrid in 1802. Zakariya also made use of classical Greek sources. Each volume with the bookplate of Pedro Jorba Valls. Slightly browned and with two or three leaves with minor marginal defects, but still in good condition. Bindings very good.         Gladiolus Watsonius/Glayeul a fleurs de Watsonie [Watson's Geichzunge]

Imprimerie de Didot jeune, Paris 1802 - Stipple engraving, printed in colour and finished by hand, engraved by Langlois. Pierre-Joseph Redoute was one of the world's great flower painters. Born into a family that had been painters for at least two generations, Redoute went to Paris in 1782 with his brother where they worked as scene painters for the Theatre italien. Redoute painted flowers in his spare time. The search for subjects led him to the Jardin du Roi and eventually Gerard van Spaendonck who made him an assistant. While at the Jardin du Roi, Redoute came to know Charles-Louis L'Heritier, an amateur botanist and writer of independent means. He gave Redoute a full time job as an illustrator, instructing him in plant anatomy. Redoute's understanding of plants contributed greatly to the clarity of his depictions. But it was Redoute's work in stipple engraving and colour printing that was to be of the greatest importance. Stippling and the application of two or three colour inks to one plate were engraving innovations that Redoute brought to French printmaking, and these were brought to perfection in Les Liliacees from which this work comes. Les Liliacees is one of two Redoute masterworks, the other being Les Roses . These works demonstrate the appropriateness of the accolade "Raphael of Flowers", for one is constantly impressed by the exquisite compositional sense and clarity of vision. More than with any other painter, one sees in Redoute's flowers living, breathing beings at their most beautiful moment. Cf. Nissen BBI 1597; cf. Great Flower Books (1990), p 128; cf. Dunthorne p 231; cf. Stafleu & Cowan TL2 8747; cf. MacPhaeil, Redouteana , 10.

Expose des temperatures. . . .Inscribed to Giovanni Fabroni

Versailles - Chavassieu-d'Audebert. Versailles: Ph.-D. Pierres; Paris: Desenne . . . , 1802. Magenta paste paper boards, printed label on front cover, light rubbing & wear. Minor foxing, a few light stains, tear in front free endpaper. Very good copy, with the author's presentation inscription on the front endpaper: "A l'illustre Professeur Monsieur Fabroni de la part de l'Auteur." The recipient was most likely Italian physicist Giovanni Valentino Mattia Fabbroni (1752-1822); see DSB. First Edition. Chavassieu-d'Audebert's charts present a thorough analysis in tabular form of the effects of temperature, atmospheric conditions and terrain on humans, animals and plants. The first chart displays the effects of temperature and humidity on health: for example, rainy weather was said to promote chronic fevers, epileptic attacks and paralysis in humans, and blight in crops. The second chart organizes temperature and climate information by month and season, describing effects on agriculture and health of various types of years (hot/dry, cold/wet, cold/dry, etc.). The third chart presents the phases of the moon and how they affect health, the effects of climate and terrain on native human, animal and plant populations, and a breakdown of the human species by geographical type.

- [4],331,[1]pp. Half title. Contemporary half calf and marbled paper boards, gilt. Spine ends and corners worn. Edges and portions of the marbled boards chewed or abraded. Nineteenth-century bookplate on front pastedown, modern bookplate on rear pastedown. Small burn hole on titlepage, minor foxing, some marginal dampstaining. Good. A remarkable account of a Frenchman's travels and adventures among the Creek Indians in the Mississippi Valley in the late 1770s and early 1780s. Some of the details in this narrative are sufficiently extraordinary that various commentators have questioned Milfort's veracity. "There are, however, corroborative circumstances which confirm his statements, and induce us to give a fair degree of credence to his narrative. At the time of his arrival among the Creeks, a half-breed named McGillivray, had obtained so great an influence over them by his talent for organization, that he had actually acquired the rank of head chief. Milfort was received with great cordiality; married his Indian sister, and in a short time was made commander of the warriors of the nation. He led them against both the Spaniards and the Americans, and by his aid the Indians defeated the forces of each in several skirmishes" - Field. "The truth is that Milfort was a hopeless liar; and as a result his book is one of the most interesting and curious books of French travel in America in the eighteenth century. His book is often hostile to the colonists. Certain descriptions of life among the Indians and frontiersmen are interesting. But what confidence can be placed in a man who was capable of describing how he, in command of six thousand Indians, had defeated George Rogers Clark and an army of ten thousand regulars!" - Monaghan. "It would take more time than I have so far been able to give to guess whether or not it is fiction" - Streeter. This book is dedicated to Napoleon; Milfort signs himself in print on the titlepage: "Tastanégy ou grand Chef de guerre de la nation Crëck." The Siebert copy in 1999 was the first to have appeared at auction since the Streeter sale in 1967. HOWES M599, "b." SABIN 48949. FIELD 1065. SERVIES 761. ECHEVERRIA & WILKIE 802/37. GRAFF 2792.
