NOTES ON THE STATE OF VIRGINIA. WITH AN APPENDIX

Boston: Printed by David Carlisle for Thomas & Andrews [et al], 1801. 364pp. plus folding map and folding table. Frontis. Contemporary tree calf, neatly rebacked, morocco spine label, gilt. Minor toning to text, light occasional foxing, small marginal repairs to the folding map, short closed tear to L4, touching a few words. Very good. In a brown half morocco box. A very nice copy of Jefferson's essential work on his home state of Virginia. Styled on the titlepage "Eighth American edition." This is the only book-length work by Jefferson to be published in his lifetime, and has been called "one of America's first permanent literary and intellectual landmarks." It was largely written in 1781 and first published in Paris, in French, in 1785. Written in the form of answers to questions about Virginia, the book provides a description of the geography, with an abundance of supporting material and unusual information. The map which accompanies this edition, by Samuel Lewis, is the same map as that issued with the Philadelphia 1794 edition, with the same date of 1794. The frontispiece portrait was engraved by Enoch G. Gridley, and is pictured and described in Cunningham's THE IMAGE OF THOMAS JEFFERSON IN THE PUBLIC EYE.... Cunningham states: "Not all copies [of this edition] contain a signed state of the engraving, but the unsigned prints are otherwise identical to those that included 'Gridley sc.' inscribed in very small lettering immediately under the portrait." The portrait in the present copy is not "signed." This edition includes appendices containing Charles Thompson's notes on Jefferson's original text, his "Draught of a Fundamental Constitution for the Commonwealth of Virginia," "An Act for Establishing Religious Freedom," and the story of the "Murder of Logan's Family." An excellent copy of Jefferson's enduring work, in an edition also notable for the portrait and the map. HOWES J78. Noble E.         THE INAUGURAL SPEECH OF THOMAS JEFFERSON [caption title]

[Boston]: From the Chronicle Press, by Adams & Rhoades, 1801. Silk broadside, approximately 21 x 15 1/4 inches, printed in two columns. Previously folded, with separations and some loss of text along old fold lines. Expertly restored and backed on linen. Matted and framed. Good plus. An extremely scarce silk broadside printing of Thomas Jefferson's First Inaugural Address. The remarks of the incoming president were a vital factor in the restoration of political peace between the Republican and Federalist parties after the brutal election of 1800, which featured outlandish rhetoric and vicious attacks from both sides, and whose outcome had to be decided by the House of Representatives after a tie in the Electoral College between Jefferson and Aaron Burr. Jefferson's tone of conciliation did much to calm the fears of a fractured government and electorate: "Let us then, fellow citizens, unite with one heart and one mind; let us restore to social intercourse that harmony and affection, without which liberty, and even life itself, are but dreary things. And let us reflect, that having banished from our land that religious intolerance under which mankind so long bled and suffered, we have yet gained little, if we countenance a political intolerance, as despotic, as wicked, and capable of as bitter and bloody persecutions.... Every difference of opinion is not a difference of principle. We have called by different names brethren of the same principle. We are all republicans: we are all federalists." An advertisement in the pages of the March 19, 1801, issue of Boston's INDEPENDENT CHRONICLE notes that the newspaper would be publishing a broadside edition of the speech, with most copies printed on paper, but also that "a few copies will be struck on white satin," of which the present copy is an example. OCLC locates only four copies of this silk edition, at the Huntington Library, the University of Virginia, the Massachusetts Historical Society, and the American Antiquarian Society. A very rare printing of one of the great speeches in early American history. SHAW & SHOEMAKER 718.

[American Bookbinding]. Erasmi Colloquia selecta; or, the select colloquies of Erasmus: with an English translation, as literal as possible. Designed for the use of beginners in the Latin tongue. By John Clark

Worcester, Mass.: Isaiah Thomas, Jun., 1801. First Worcester edition. 12mo. 190 pp. English and Latin in parallel columns. Original canvas binding (see below) over thin wooden boards ("scaleboards"). Faint pencilled inscription on first blank leaf (another apparently excised). Early ownership inscription of S. Chandler (dated Aug. 10, 1838) and with the bookplate of Seth Chandler. A very early use of canvas for bookbinding in America, preserved in exceptionally good condition. This particular type of cloth is known to have been used by Isaiah Thomas on books printed in his shop, for instance: the Princeton copy of Caleb Alexander's "A Grammatical System of the Grecian Language" (1796). In Princeton's "Hand Bookbinding" online exhibit their binding is praised as a "rarity in such good condition" although significant fraying can be observed along the front joint (certainly not present in our binding which survives in tight and fresh state). The present binding is further noteworthy in the characteristically American use of "scaleboards," a type of thin planed wooden boards that has been generating significant scholarly attention of late, most recently (and thoroughly) in Renee Wolcott's formidable work entitled "Splintered: The History, Structure, and Conservation of American Scaleboard Bindings" (Book and Paper Group Annual 32 [2013] 58-79, concluding with a bibliography of no less than 23 references). Wolcott explains: "Canvas was a relatively rare material for bookbinding prior to the introduction of impermeable, manufactured bookcloth in the 19th century, and its survival is always remarkable. Although the plain-weave canvas covering on a 1795 Latin textbook [likewise printed by Isaiah Thomas, and now at the Library Company] is seriously discolored, apparently due to the acidity of the wood used in the scaleboards, the cloth in this case has proved to be almost as durable as leather (figs. 12a, 12b). The cover is plain, the corners are lapped in the usual way, and the canvas was not tied down over the raised cords on the spine. The rounded, backed spine, however, is unique. The unusual canvas cover suggests that the book might have been bound for the bookseller rather than the purchaser, or that parents buying schoolbooks commonly selected the cheapest permanent binding available" (pp. 70-71). Canvas bindings of this sort originated in England in the third quarter of the 18th century, and were usually found on textbooks of the period. See also the pioneering article by D. Leighton, "Canvas and bookcloth: an essay on beginnings" in: The Library, 3rd series, no. 3 (1949), pp. 39-49. PROVENANCE: The owner of this book was almost certainly Seth Chandler (1806-1889) the Universalist minister, one of the leaders of the Restorationist Controversy within the denomination, minister of the First Parish Congregational Society (Unitarian) in Shirley, Massachusetts for forty-five years, and the author of the first significant history of that town.         Tableau de l'Agriculture Toscane

Chez J.J. Paschoud, Libraire, Geneve 1801 - First edition. Includes fold-out. Small contemporary bookplate and larger modern bookplate on front endpaper. xiv, 327 pp. 8vo. Patterned leather spine, orange morocco spine labels, gilt titles and rules, paper over boards. French text. Fold-out of engraved agricultural illustrations follows text. The first work by the historian and political economist who became known for his French and Italian histories. Simonde details his life on a small farm in Pescia, which his family bought after fleeing from political unrest in Geneva caused by the French Revolution. His particular expertise was in the cultivation of olives for olive oil, and grapes for wine, though this work also provides general information about techniques for growing fruit-bearing trees, vegetables, and grains. Two years after the revolution was over, he returned to Geneva and published the work there. He later wrote an economic treatise designed to explain and popularize the ideas in Adam Smith's The Wealth of Nations, while also championing the idea of using existing wealth to produce happiness rather than merely attempting to increase wealth. His histories of France and Italy were the turning point in his writing career, and established him as a man of letters. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Message and Communication from the President of the United States to the Senate and House of Representatives; Delivered in the Commencement of the First Session of the Seventh Congress, the 8th of December 1801. With the Accompanying Documents. {Plus] No. Documents No. III-V. Accompanying the President's Communications to Congress, the 8th of December, 1801.

Washington City: Samuel Harrison Smith, 1801. Pamphlets (two), 8vo, first pamphlet unbound and uncut signature, 15, [1] pp; second unbound stitched, two fold out tables, 5, [3] pp. plus two foldout tables. Some browning, foxing and spotting, first starting to split at a few folds, minor chipping at edges; otherwise about very good. This is an early Washington City imprint, by Samuel Harrison Smith, a friend of Thomas Jefferson. One of the interesting features of these pamphlets is that they include a copy of the4 second census. The numbers show a population of over 5 million, and almost 900,000 slaves. There is also information on the expenses related to building gun ships, ports and the sale of some government assets. Thomas Jefferson (1746-1836) was the third president of the United States. This speech to Congress was delivered toward the end of his first year in office, and was basically a state of the union address. However, because Jefferson didn't want to be viewed as a king, he had a clerk make the presentation. National Archives

NOTES ON THE STATE OF VIRGINIA

Philadelphia, 1801. [4],436,56pp. plus three maps (one folding), folding plate and frontispiece portrait. Thick octavo. Modern calf, gilt leather label. Moderate tanning, browned in places, scattered foxing, light offsetting from plates. Good. One of the most handsome American editions of Jefferson, and the first issued after his accession to the presidency, noted on the title as the "First Hot-Pressed Edition." The portrait, pictured and described in Cunningham's THE IMAGE OF THOMAS JEFFERSON IN THE PUBLIC EYE..., was engraved by William Harrison, Jr., after a print by Mathew Carey. It is one of the relatively few engraved images of Jefferson. This edition adds Jefferson's famous first inaugural address ("we are all Republicans, we are all Federalists"). An appendix adds his correspondence relating to the Logan massacre, a horrific frontier tale of the murder of a friendly Indian family in southwest Virginia during Lord Dunmore's War in 1774. This copy also contains a large folding map, A MAP OF THE STATE OF VIRGINIA, described as "Compiled for Rawle's Hot-pressed Edition of Jefferson's Notes." The folding plate is "A View of the Natural Bridge in Virginia." HOWES J78. CLARK I:262. Noble E. Cunningham, Jr., THE IMAGE OF THOMAS JEFFERSON IN THE PUBLIC EYE, p.51.

Le sang, est-il identique dans tous les vaisseaux qu’il parcourt ?

Paris, Chez l'auteur (imprimé par de Lesguilliez frères) 1801 - The first positive step anticipating the conception of internal secretions, the futur endocrinology. Paris, Chez l'auteur (imprimé par de Lesguilliez frères), An X - 1801. Grand in-8 de (5)-149 et (3) pages ; modern half-vellum. Very rare first edition, first issue, and a complete copy in 149 and (3) pages, of the Legallois's doctoral thesis. "Like de Bordeu, and more definitely, Legallois anticipated the conception of internal secretions. He surmised from the identity in composition of all varieties of arterial blood and the diversity of venous blood in different parts of the body, that this diversity is acquired, in each case from the loss of some substance from the organ from which the vein proceeds." (GM) "His dissertation was addressed to the question of whether blood is identical in all vessels through which it flows. In it Legallois pointed out that although blood is identical in all the arteries, it changes as it passes through the various organs and thus one organ may by its products influence all the others. This dissertation revealed Legallois’s interest in experimental physiology and was widely appreciated as a model of physiological discussion." (DSB) A scarce pioneering work in modern experimental physiology, before Magendie, Bernard and the great German physiologists and for the pre-theories of modern hormonal medicine, the endocrinology. Titlepage reinforced in the inner margin, the leaves are crooked in the inner margin. Garrison and Morton 1118 ; Heirs of Hippocrates 1252 ; DSB XVIII, 132-135.         Orange-chinned Parakeet. (La Perruche à gorge rouge) (Brotogeris sp.)]

Paris 1801 - Colour-printed stipple engraving. Very good condition. Jacques Barraband was the finest ornithological artist of his time. The son of a weaver at the Aubusson Factory, he is first mentioned as a pupil of Joseph Malaine (1745-1809), the eminent flower painter, and is known to have worked for both the Gobelin Factory and the porcelain factory of Sèvres. His most important work was undoubtedly the 300 or so drawings that he produced for François Levaillant's three great ornithological monographs, the greatest of which was the Histoire Naturelle des Perroquets (1801-1805).

Not in Amicus.Called the third edition by Howes, preceded only by a privately printededition for the family and the first published edition, both of theprevious year. Although bibliographers often attribute this book to bothRiedesels, it was in fact written by Mrs. Riedesel. Friedrich Riedeselwas in command of the German troops sent to Canada in February of 1776to aid the British. His wife joined him there in the spring of 1777 andaccompanied him on the campaign under Burgoyne which went south into NewYork that fall, ending in the defeat and surrender of all of Burgoyne'sforces at Saratoga on October 17, 1777. The Riedesels were then captivesof the Americans (although under loose parole), first at Cambridge andthen in Virginia, whence the captive army was moved in late 1778. Therelife was quite pleasant, and the prisoners became friendly with ThomasJefferson. Later they spent time in Pennsylvania, Bethlehem, New York andCanada, before finally returning to Europe in 1783. "Mme Riedesel'snarrative and descriptions are written with impressive directness andsimplicity; there is a quality of genuineness about them that bespeaksher sterling character and the honesty of her record" - Clark. .

      - [2] ff., 227-[3] pp., 1 pl. Later 19th century tan half morocco, spine in compartments with raised bands and gilt titles direct, red cloth sides, green endpapers, red speckled edges. Half-title, frontispiece and 21 plates (4 hand-coloured). Bound without publisher's advertisements at the rear. Some scuffs to the covers, hinges reinforced with a morocco strip, some light spotting and a gutter stain affecting the first few leaves, some light spotting around the plates, otherwise a clean copy in very good condition. First edition, very scarce, with four plates vibrantly hand-coloured, of this first collection of major occult thought in English since the 1651 translation of Agrippa's Three Books of Occult Philosophy. Barrett's Magus was highly influential on the occult revival of the 19th century, both in the Gothic and Romantic spheres, as well as on the Golden Dawn through the facsimile edition printed in 1875. That facsimile is distinguished from this first most obviously by the absence of the "long s" in the font, as well as in the lack of the 1801 watermark to the paper.

Historical Account of the Substances which have been used to Describe Events, and to Convey Ideas, from the Earliest Date to the Invention of Paper. London, Printed by Jaques & Co., 1801.

1801 1801 - Pp. 274. With engraved frontispiece of an Egyptian papyrus. Old ownership signature on title. Contemporary calf on marbled boards, expertly rebacked to style, with title label. The second, revised and much enlarged edition (first 1800). This edition was printed on remanufactured white paper and became the first book printed on recycled paper in the West! The appendix (pp. 259-274) is printed on paper made from wood pulp. Matthias Koops was a pioneer of mechanical paper production with great experience of manufacturing from waste paper at Neckinger mill in South London. He invented new processes for making paper from wood pulp rather than from rags, and for recycling paper itself so it could be used for printing. Between 1800 and 1801 Koops was granted three patents for making paper from a number of unusual substances. The first edition of this work was printed entirely on yellow paper made from straw. This version of the second edition was printed on recycled paper with the exception of the frontispiece which was printed on straw paper. It includes much statistical information about the paper industry in Britain and elsewhere in Europe at the time. Dard Hunter (1947), pp. 332-40, 375-6, & p. 523. Cf. Bigmore & Wyman p. 399.
