        Document signed

1801. Signed. NAPOLEON. Document signed. Paris: 17 Fructidor, circa 1800-1804. Tall quarto (8-1/2 by 13 inches), one page on official Etat-Major General stationery, matted and framed with portrait, entire piece measures 23 by 21 inches. $8200.Military promotion, elevating a Captain to Major, signed “Bonaparte” by Napoleon as First Consul, additionally signed by Marshal Francios Lefebvre, one of the original 18 ""Marshals of the Empire"" created by Napoleon in 1804.In this document, Capitaine Dechassey (Captain) of the First Military Division is requesting the rank of ""Chef de Batallion"" (Major). I take the liberty of soliciting the rank of major, whereby my services, campaigns and actions I here enclose with the testimony of general officers under whom I waged war, who have shown my constant esteem and attachment, all the titles I hereby submit for your good will]. The principal testimony supporting this appeal is that of Marshal François Lefebvre, one of the original 18 ""Marshals of the Empire,"" a rank created by Napoleon, who went on to become the Duc of Dantzig after successfully besieging and conquering that city in 1807. While this document is not dated, it clearly dates after December 12, 1799, when Napoleon was named ""Premier Consul de la Republique,"" as he is referred to in this document, and prior to his coronation as Emperor on December 2, 1804. Beginning with his coronation as Emperor, Napoleon began to sign his documents as ""Napoleon,"" or more commonly, ""Nap,"" or ""Np,"" rather than using ""Bonaparte,"" as in this document. Text in French. A bit of minor marginal toning, faint fold lines, near-fine condition. Napoleon's ""Bonaparte"" signature bold.

        Vies des Hommes Illustres

1801. PLUTARCH. Les Vies des Hommes Illustres… Traduites du Grec par Amyot. Paris: Cussac, 1801-05. Twenty-five volumes. Small octavo, contemporary full brown mottled calf, elaborately gilt-decorated spines, green morocco spine labels, marbled endpapers and edges. $4000.Later edition of Amyot’s translation, the 1559 edition of which was the basis of North’s English translation, a major source for Shakespeare’s three Roman plays.“What raises [Plutarch] to a level of greatness as a writer is his Lives. We have two of his lives of the Caesars, one or two stray lives, and 23 in a series of contrasting pairs, always one Greek and one Roman, usually with a summary comparison of their moral qualities… His Lives really are the stuff of poetry, though they read as unpretentious prose. With the alteration of very few words, they transmute into Shakespeare” (Levi, 464-65). “The influence of Plutarch’s method has been constantly manifest in the biographies of the modern great and in the authors who have been inspired by it. Shakespeare relied almost exclusively on [North’s] Plutarch for the historical background of ancient Rome” (PMM 48). First published in 1559, Jacques Amyot’s vigorous and idiomatic version “obtained an immense popularity, and exercised great influence over successive generations of French writers” (Auguste de Belignieres). It was the version used by Sir Thomas North for his English translation of 1579. Montaigne said of Amyot, “I give the palm to Jacques Amyot over all our French writers, not only for the simplicity and purity of his language in which he surpasses all others, nor for his constancy to so long an undertaking, nor for his profound learning… but I am grateful to him especially for his wisdom in choosing so valuable a work.” With engraved frontispiece in Volume I and a number of full-page illustrations throughout the set. Brunet IV, 739. See Peck, 1279-80; Moss II,518-19. Interiors remarkably clean and bright, contemporary calf-gilt bindings exceptional. A beautiful set in fine condition.

"Lamarck's first public presentation of his theory of evolution was in his opening discourse for his course on invertebrates at the museum in 1800 ; it was published the following year at the beginning of his Systême des animaux sans vertèbres." (DSB, VII, p.589 ; voir aussi Dibner, Heralds of Science, 194). "He separated spiders and crustaceans from insects, and classified worms into truer categories than had Linnaeus" (Dibner, 194).

[...]". - Gefaltet.

1801. Paris, 1801. Let the Punishment Fit the Crime Sarreste, Charles Joseph. Examen de la Legislation Romaine, Anglaise et Francaise, En Matiere Criminelle; Et Moyen de Proportionner la Peine au Delit. Paris: Chez Garnery/Rondonneau/Veuve Richard, An 11 [1801]. [iv], 192 pp. Octavo (8-1/2" x 5-1/4"). Original publisher wrappers, untrimmed edges, unopened signatures. A few minor stains, spine abraded and worn though at ends. Light toning to text, light foxing to a few leaves, internally clean. $750. * Only edition. An interesting work of comparative criminal law from the Consulate period that compares ideas of proportionality in the punishment of criminals according to Roman, French and English law. Sarreste outlines a history of debates concerning sentencing around the time of the French Revolution, drawing on contemporary debates in Great Britain and the work of writers like Beccaria and Blackstone. He discusses the nature of punishment, acts that may be classified as crimes, areas in which civil and criminal law overlap and the circumstances that establish criminal liability. He goes on to examine the penalties in England and France for various categories of crime, noting, to cite two examples, the severity of the death penalty for fraud in Great Britain and the absurdity of treating rape differently according to the age of the victim in France.

        Symptoms of the Shop

London: S.W. Fores, 1801. Three of George Moutard Woodward's Hand-Colored Prints from "Symptoms of the Shop" WOODWARD, George Moutard, artist, SANSOM, Francis, printmaker. Symptoms of the Shop. London: S.W. Fores, 1801. First edition. Quarto (10 1/8 x 8 1/16 inches; 257 x 265 mm.). Three (of twelve) hand colored 'Satirical' stipple engravings on wove paper drawn by Woodward and etched by Sansom (numbers 7, 8, and 10). Each with the plate number at the top right margin and with lithographed text at the top of the image. On each of the lower margins is "Pub. June 1st 1801 by S.W. Fores No.50 Piccadilly Prints and Drawings lent on the plan of a Library Folio's of Caricatur lent out for the Evening." / Symptoms of the Shop" / "Drawn by G. Woodward Etchd by F. Sansom". Some light marginal soiling, otherwise near fine. Plate #7. "After all there is nothing like the true old orthodox principles…" Plate #8. "I have brought your Honor home your new suit…" Plate #10. "Madam - I was once a Minister and used to negotiations…" Very rare. According to OCLC there is only one complete set in libraries and institutions worldwide (Princeton, NJ) - does not mention 'colored'). Yale university has nine of the twelve colored plates (missing numbers 1, 7 & 8). The Lewis Walpole Library, CT. has plate #3 (colored). Harvard, MA has one plate. These two artists previously collaborated on Every Body in Town (BC-28), Every Body Out of Town (BC-29), and Pigmy Revels: All Alive in Lilliput (BC-62), all published by Fores. Each plate depicts two persons engaged in humorous wordplay relating to the characteristics of a trade or calling. (William Gordon. A catalogue of the Books, Drawings, Prints and Periodicals forming the William A. Gordon Library of British Caricature). The three images present here include: Plate 7. A man, sitting in a wooden chair, lifts his hand for emphasis, and declares: "After all there is nothing like the true old orthodox principles." An obese clergyman, in a padded armchair on the right, responds: "Orthodox principles - ah my dear friend, you put me in mind of old times - when I was but a simple vicar. How I used to charm my congregation - slim as a Bedles wand - & delicate as a new wash'd surplice, - but since I have been raised to higher dignities, I do nothing, but remain in my chair; bulky & unweildy as a Folio Church Service. - oh how elegantly I used to manage my discourses - fifteen minutes to a point, by the clock under the gallery - never exceeded - short praye, - text - and devision - one - two - three & away - that was my method." Plate 8. A man with a parcel under his arm bows slightly and says: "I have brought your Honor home your new suit." A stout, bespectacled lawyer replies: "Suit - ah - Mr. Buckram you did not know me when I practiced in the Courts - I could have shewn you suits that would have puzzled Judge Blackstone himself - none of your simple matters - brim full of Law, as a brief bag - intricate as the Temple avenues, -& long as Westminster Hall - Shy Clients sometimes, - but it would not do with Paul Parchment - sure to have them on way or other. - Once in never out that was my motto." Plate 10. A former Minister, holding his hat, wearing a bag-wig, and with his pocket filled with scrolls, addresses a woman: "Madam - I was once a Minister, and used to Negotiations, I shall therefore be happy to treat with you on Matrimonial Speculation - I have ample credentials ready to ratify my powers, and if you please will enter into preliminaries immediately, - but let me have a sight glance at your project, and be assured I will deliver to you my contre projet as soon as the definitive treaty is concluded, and duly guaranteed." The woman, who is short and plump, looks aghast at the proposition.

Captn. John Hunter Late Governor of New South Wales.

London: Burney & Gold, 1801. Stipple engraving, 175 x 128mm (sheet size), very closely trimmed but otherwise good. An unusual portrait of Captain John Hunter, captain of the Sirius during the First Fleet era and later Governor of New South Wales from 1795-1800. This portrait was prepared in 1801, and so is significant as showing Hunter just after he had returned from New South Wales for the second time.An accomplished and professional naval officer, Hunter's time on the Sirius saw him become a mainstay of the colony, dispatched to Batavia and the Cape of Good Hope to trade. His governorship was not as successful, as Hunter's attempts to confront the illegal trade in rum and other challenges to his authority led to even more turbulence from the New South Wales Corps and its cronies. It was a crucial period in the consolidation of New South Wales as the penal outpost of the British Empire, and while Hunter was widely regarded as a competent administrator by 1799 things had deteriorated to the extent that he was recalled rather sternly. This engraving appeared in the Naval Chronicle of 1801. It depicts Hunter as a more senior and dashing figure than the earlier engraving of 1792 which had been included as frontispiece in Hunter's An Historical Journal of the Transactions at Port Jackson and Norfolk Island.

Autograph Letter Signed to Henry Dundas, Lord Melville, discussing the northwest Pacific after his meeting with Sauer at the house of Sir Joseph Banks.

London: 12 January 1801. Single sheet of wove paper, 265 x 445 mm., watermarked "JW", folded to letter-size with holograph manuscript to three pages; traces of original folds, later refolded to docket-size and with manuscript description in another hand. A very significant letter from the great cartographer Alexander Dalrymple, of especial interest regarding British and Russian ambitions in the northwest Pacific. Its opening line sets the scene wonderfully: 'Last night at Sir Joseph Banks's house, I saw a gentleman, Mr. Sauer, who is arrived within these 10 or 12 days from Russia... '. Sauer had previously served in the North Pacific under Joseph Billings. This must have been an exceptional meeting of Pacific Ocean experts, and further underlines Banks's abiding interest in the region. Certainly the letter also highlights Dalrymple's continuing research in his position as hydrographer to the Admiralty, while the fact that it is written to Henry Dundas, first Viscount Melville, then serving as the War Secretary under Pitt, also confirms the strategic importance of the work he was doing.Dalrymple gives a fascinating précis of his detailed conversation with Sauer, who had sailed as an officer on the expedition that left St Petersburg in 1785 under the command of Joseph Billings. On their lengthy expedition Billings, who had sailed with Captain Cook on the third voyage, even met up with a fellow Cook-alumnus, John Ledyard, in Yakutsk. Billings and Sauer made a second voyage in the northern Pacific in 1790. Most importantly, it was Sauer who wrote the important account of the Billings voyages, published not long after this meeting, in 1802.In the letter, Dalrymple sketches Sauer's valuable account of the Russian Fur Trade, noting that it has 'undergone a great change, by the present Emperor having established an American Company.' He comments that they are said to employ seven vessels of about 150 tons each, and includes military and hydrographic details of the base at Okotsk, giving this description of the American coast: 'very populous... they could collect 20,000 men in 24 hours; but that the NW part is the least populous many of the places named in the map having no existence and others being merely fishing huts... the Russians have 1200 men at Cook's River.' There is a good description of the warlike Tschutski, with the note that 'their country having no wood for Canoes they cross over to America & supply themselves by violence from their more peaceable neighbours and also make slaves of them.'The letter makes clear that Sauer was already planning his publication ('He proposes publishing his Voyage having all the Charts &c. but it is not written out'), and, reflecting Dalrymple's sense of the importance of the information, he urges Dundas to buy Sauer's papers 'for I suppose a small sum, as he would be entitled to the profits of Publication.' It seems that this transaction was never approved.Dalrymple's papers are chiefly in the British Library and the Public Records Office, although interestingly his correspondence with Dundas is in the National Library of Scotland. Small tears around original seal (not present).
