DISSERTATION UPON THE CONSTITUTIONAL FREEDOM OF THE PRESS IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA By an Impartial Citizen

Boston: by David Carlisle for Joseph Nancrede, 1801. Rare first edition. 8vo, unbound sheets as printed. 54 pp. Very well preserved with just some of the toning one would anticipate and a few minor occasional spots or small stains. RARE, WE KNOW OF NO OTHER COPY CURRENTLY ON THE MARKET AND ONLY ONE COPY AT AUCTION (1991) IN THE LAST 40 YEARS. There are only 32 copies listed in institutional holdings, several of which belong to Harvard. The author, an impartial citizen", is attributed to be James Sullivan (April 22, 1744 - December 10, 1808) who was a lawyer and politician in Massachusetts. He was an early associate justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, served as the state's attorney general for many years, and as governor of the state from 1807 until his death. Being such a well known figure in public service it is understandable why he would have wanted this publication to be anonymous. When Massachusetts debated ratification of the United States Constitution in 1788, Sullivan was one of a number of Massachusetts politicians who expressed reservations about the document, but generally supported ratification. In the debate he proposed that the convention conditionally adopt the Constitution, subject to Congress considering and acting on a suite of amendments.

The History of the Campaign in 1796 1799 in Germany and Italy h

London: Gardiner, Egerton & Wright, 1801 - 5 volumes octavo. Contemporary streaked calf, red morocco lettering pieces, volume numbers in green morocco roundels to the fourth compartment, edges sprinkled blue. Lightly rubbed, corners bumped, some skilful repair to scrapes and gouges to the boards of the first two volumes, tan-burn from the turn-ins to the endpapers, pale browning of the text-blocks. 16 crisply-engraved folding maps and plans First 4 volumes second editions, the fifth a first. Sometimes ascribed to Thomas Graham, Baron Lynedoch (cf. Halkett & Laing). Contemporary account of the French Revolutionary Wars, with considerable detail of early campaigns of Napoleon, "a young man [who] was almost constantly victorious in Italy" (Preface). The author offers to those who "would wish to have before them, in one view, all the various facts combined, arranged, and connected The Materials from which this work is composed, have been partly collected fro, the accounts officially published at London, Vienna, and Paris; and partly procured, through means of correspondence constantly kept up with some distinguished military characters on the Continent. Some of these have been, and still are, actually engaged in this war; and others have watched its progress with the most attentive and intelligent observation The knowledge which [the author] himself has personally had of the greater part of the theatre of the war, some of the armies which are engaged in it, and of several of the Generals who command them, joined to some degree of experience on the subject cannot have failed to be of considerable use to him". Fine contemporary armorial bookplate of the Scottish banker and philanthropist Sir William Forbes, 6th Baronet of Monymusk and Pitsligo: "Forbes was a close friend of the poet and philosopher James Beattie, and also of James Boswell, who introduced him to Samuel Johnson in 1773. Urbane and welcoming, with refined tastes in music, dancing, and drawing, Forbes gravitated towards London, where he made his mark in two ways. At one level he was a conversationalist, accepted in West End society, a member of Johnson's Literary Club, and a friend of Sir Joshua Reynolds (for whom he sat); at the other level he was a wise banker, introduced by Lord Melville to William Pitt the younger, who took his advice in monetary matters" (ODNB). A highly attractive set. Sandler 1499 [Attributes: First Edition]

Text in French. An important work on North American flora, and early reference on the subject, with description and plates of all species and varieties of Oaks in North America. Michaux's travels also brought him to parts of Europe, Persia, and Madagascar, where he died around 1802.         View of the source of the glaciers and the lake of Kandersteig - Vue de la glaciers et de Lac du Kandersteig.

      - London, G. & W. Nicoll, 1801. Very large broadsheet (80.2 x 56.3 cm). Aquatint, finished by hand.l A fine, large plate of the Kandersteig (= Kandersteg) lake (= Oeschinensee) and glaciers, in the Swiss canton of Bern.Drawn "on the spot" by Claude Louis Châtelet (1753-1795), engraved by the French engraver Jaques Mérigot (later James Merigot; d. 1816) and painted by P. Vanlerberghe from Flanders, who was also known as an etcher. Mérigot and Vanlerberghe moved to London sometime in the 1790's. This plate was made several years after the death of Châtelet. "[Châtelet] embraced with ardour the cause of the Revolution, allied himself with Robespierre and the leaders of the Jacobins, and became a member of the Revolutionary Tribunal. He was arrested some months after the 9th Thermidor, tried, condemned, and executed in Paris, May 7, 1795" (Wikipedia). It is tempting to assume that Mérigot, and perhaps Van Lerberghe too, had close ties with Châtelet and therefore fled to London. As far as we know this plate is a piece of art on its own, not meant to be part of book. It is one of the earliest views of the glacier and it may be of importance in establishing the retreat of the glacier in historic times. A very wide-margined copy. Small chips to the lower corners, slight age-toning, but generally in very good condition, with the imprint and colouring strong and bright.

      - Paris, Giguet 1801-02. Three volumes octavo contemporary speckled calf (surface nibbling on the sides). An excellent, fresh, crisp and handsome set. First edition. This was not a period to argue against the idea of empire in France and Pradt is a notable exception to the rule of silence. Perhaps this was seen as a clever polemical spanner to be insinuated into the works of the English, Dutch, Portugese and Spanish; certainly it did Pradt no harm. He thrived under Napoleon and momentarily did even better come the restoration, until his attempts to curry the favour of all sides backfired. He was nothing if not a sleaze; once he was sure Napoleon was truly finished he published his claim that he was 'the one man too many' that brought Napoleon down. A couple of historians have argued about his influence on Jefferson and Adams and by descent the Monroe Doctrine but he won greatest favour among the liberationists of South America, apparently Bolivar awarded him a pension paid from his own funds. This is the first and most ambitious of many works that chewed over the nature and future of colonial power over the next thirty years and while his ideal outcome changed through the years his tenet remained the same: the independence of colonies was inevitable, desirable and beneficial for Europe.

Mexico City, "Oficina Madrileña" [literally "Madrid office", a name used by the Jáuregui heirs], 1802. 4to (19.5 x 14 cm). With engraved title-page dated 1801, an engraved portrait of Felipe de Jésus (both engravings by Montes de Oca) and extra-illustrated with 15 (of 30) engraved plates also by Montes de Oca, from the closely related 1801 print

      - Medina, Imprenta en Mexico 9461; Palau 35446 & 184665 & 363045; Sabin 76029; WorldCat (10? copies of Resumen, including some incomplete, and 3 copies of Vida). Rare account of the life and Japanese martyrdom of the patron saint of Mexico (and first Mexican saint of any kind), Felipe de Jésus (1575 or ca. 1572-1597), with 15 additional plates from the extremely rare and closely related print series of De Jésus's life, issued one year earlier. The engraved title-page, portrait, and the 15 additional plates from the 1801 print series were all produced by José María Montes de Oca (1668-1748), one of the most important book illustrators and engravers of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, and all are here coloured by a contemporary hand. De Jésus was a Franciscan missionary who grew up in Mexico and worked at Manilla in the Philippines from 1590 to 1596. On his way back to Mexico a storm forced his ship to land on the Japanese coast, where it was confiscated and he and the other passengers and crew imprisoned. The fact that there were soldiers and cannons on board lead the Japanese authorities to interpret the landing as an attack, so De Jésus and the others were arrested, imprisoned at Kyoto, their ears were cut off, and at Nagasaki on 5 February 1597 they were crucified and executed (pierced by two spears). The print series that supplied the extra illustrations, with the engraved title Vida de San Felipe de Jesus protomartir de Japon y patron de su patria Mexico, is Montes de Oca's finest work, one of the earliest print series published in Mexico, and the 15 plates added to the present book include De Jésus's arrival in the Philippines, his ship in the storm, his imprisonment in Kyoto and his execution at Nagasaki. The. The delicate engravings add visual power to Munibe's account of De Jésus's life. If Munibe gives the correct date of birth, De Jésus was only 21 when martyred in Japan. With a faint pencilled inscription on the back of the engraved title-page. With a worm hole through the front board and nearly half the leaves, occasional small marginal worm holes, and an occasional faint smudge or spot, but otherwise in very good condition and with generous margins. The colouring sometimes bleeds through the paper, but since the plates are blank on the back this presents no problems. The binding shows several chips and scuffs, but the lowest 3 gold-tooled flowers on spine are well preserved and the whole remains structurally sound. Very rare extra-illustrated copy of an early Mexican work on Japan, in a contemporary Mexican binding.

Erotika Biblion .

Vatar-Jouannet, 'chez tous les marchands de nouveautés', 'An IX',, Paris 1801 - Written in prison and first published in 1783, Mirabeau's learned but witty treatise on the varieties of sexuality in antiquity was immediately banned and issued in very few copies (traditionally only 14). Later editions continued to provoke the censor and are also rare. In this Paris edition, a near-contemporary reader has inserted notes on the early publication of the text, the opinion that Mirabeau presents 'des tableaux plus licentieux que ceux de l'Aretin', and Greek transliterations of chapter headings, with definitions.Pia's A-342 conforms to this edition, save for the spelling of the first word of the title. Pia gives 'Errotika' as in all previous editions, while ours reads 'Erotika'. This may therefore be Pia's error, and may also suggest ours is the first edition to bear the modernised title spelling customary in all later editions. 12mo (128 × 80 mm), pp. iv, 248, plus engraved portrait. 8 blank leaves loosely inserted at several points at an early date, some bearing contemporary manuscript notes, one further small annotation (Hebrew characters). Contemporary sprinkled vellum. Becoming loose towards the rear, but secure, lower joint cracked. [Gay I, 150-155 (still the best explanation of the text).] [Attributes: First Edition]

Soiling to plates, heavy soiling to the first few plates of Volume I, offsetting and foxing to plates. An important work in the history of architecture. First edition of the "first survey of world architecture based on building types" - RIBA. "Durand's lasting contribution is the separation of architecture from its traditional association with nature and with style." Durand "was the first architectural theoretician to clarify architectural objects by their common formal characteristics - to establish a rational science of design through standardization of functional topology. In the Recueil, Durand totally overturns the traditional relation between architecture and nature in favor of abstraction based on a scientific method of classification by type. His concept of architecture is in perfect agreement with the prevailing political philosophy and its emphasis on utility." (Millard 174-75) Brunet II, 904; British Architectural Library 956. "Doué d'une intelligence vive, d'une mémoire tenace, assidu au travail et se délassant de l'étude par l'étude même, Senebier s'appliqua avec un zèle égal à des recherches fort différentes ; on le vit passer sans effort comme sans lassitude de la théologie à la botanique, du classement des livres à l'observation microscopique, de la physique à l'histoire.         The life, adventures and opinions of Col. George Hanger, written by himself. To which is added, Advice to the Prelates and Legislators, how to correct the immorality and Jacobinism of the present age, and at the same time increase the revenue. Advice to the lovely Cyprians, and to the fair sex in general ... On matrimony, compulsive wedlock, and on polygamy. On the misery of female prostitution. The history of the lovely Aegyptia, the Pamela of Norwood, and paragon of the Aegyptian race; the author's marriage with her, and her cruel infidelity and elopement with a travelling tinker. And a history of the King's Bench Prison, written by the author during his custody under the Marshal of that prison, descriptive of the miseries endured by the prisoners, and the extravagant expence incident to their confinement.

London, J. Debrett, 1801. Two vols, 8vo, one engraving in the text, (4) + 339 + (1) and (2) + 475 + (1)pp., including the half-title in vol.I, but without the 4pp. of publisher's advertisements at the end of vol.II, in a plain, early 20th century cloth binding, spine simply lettered in gilt. A good copy. First edition. Sabin 30227. Howes H.158. An extraordinary book purporting to be the autobiography of this late 18th century eccentric. Following the disbandment of Tarleton's Light Dragoons in 1783, Hanger was placed on half pay. 'Owing to the embarrassment of his affairs Hanger was an inmate of the King's Bench Prison from 2 June 1798 to April 1799, and in 1800 he set up as a coal merchant. 'A beau and clubman—in both senses—who affected the manners of the French court, Hanger assisted Tarleton with his faro bank at Daubigney's Tavern, London, lounging at the entrance with a huge rattan he called ‘the Infant'. He became one of the dissipated companions of the prince of Wales, indulging in gambling, racing, and pugilism. In 1787 he and Tarleton organized ‘bludgeon men' for the whigs at the Westminster by-election. In November 1791 he was appointed equerry to the prince of Wales. In August 1797, in litigation against his elder brother William, third Baron Coleraine, he wrote to the prince begging a loan of £100. His critics considered him among the dregs of society. He was much mentioned in contemporary memoirs and was caricatured by Gillray, Rowlandson, Dighton, and Cruikshank.' [Stuart Reid in ODNB]. In 1801 William Combe compiled from Hanger's papers and suggestions The Life, Adventures and Opinions of Colonel George Hanger, written by himself>, &c. On the second page of this unsavoury book is a portrait of Hanger, with cocked hat and sword, suspended on a gibbet. Hanger's curiously accurate prophecy that 'one of these days the northern and southern powers (of the States) will fight as vigorously against each other as they both have united to do against the British', will be found in vol.II (p.427).'
