Synoptic tables of chemistry, intended to serve as a summary of the lectures delivered on that science in the public schools at Paris

London: T. Cadell & W. Davies, 1801. First English edition. Calf-backed marbled boards; some light marginal spotting, small tear on first two leaves repaired, text unaffected, small stamp (discarded) from the Academy of Natural Sciences on title. Overall in excellent condition. First English edition of this scarce and handsome set of Fourcroy's chemistry tables. The present work was translated by William Nicholson from the original French (Tableaux Synoptiques de Chimie, 1800), the first set of chemical synoptic tables ever published. The author intended for it to accompany his collected lectures and chief work, Systême des connaissances chimiques (1800), which Ferguson considers "the best account of the state of the science at the time." While the extensive Systême des connaissances chimiques was written for the advanced scholar, Fourcroy felt the succinct large-format tables would summarize and clearly demonstrate the basic principles and relationships of chemistry for all students. They were originally created as teaching aids to be split up and posted on the wall of a laboratory or classroom, which likely contributed to the current rarity of complete sets. Fourcroy (1755-1809), noted French chemist and professor at the Jardin des Plantes, École Polytechnique, and the École de Médicine, was a dedicated teacher whose celebrated lectures were renowned for their completeness, clarity, and brilliant delivery. He joined with Lavoisier, Guyton de Morveau, and Berthollet in revising chemical nomenclature, which is reflected in this work. Nicholson (1753-1815), an English chemist, was a follower of Fourcroy's antiphlogistic theory, and translated many of his works into English including Élemens d'Histoire naturelle et de Chimie (1782), Essai sur le Phlogistique (1788), and later Systême des connaissances chimiques (1804).

To this Edition is Added, a Concise History of the Reformation in Ireland; and Considerations on the Means of Extending its Advantages Therein.

Dublin: Printed by Robert Marchbank, for John Milliken [etc.], 1801. SECOND EDITION. Quarto, pp.[2] x, 636; 210 [10]. With 10 folding maps and plans. Also with a large section of appedixes and an unpaginated index. In contemporary tan full calf, recently re-backed with the original boards, and the original spine leather pasted over. Raised bands and gilt titles and decoration to spine. Gilt ruling and dentelle to fore-edges; marbled endpapers.Bookplate of the Hope Trust, 31 Moray Place, Edinburgh, to front pastedown. Internally fine, with a small shelfmark to the base of the spine, and some wear to edges, especially corners. Very good overall.Written by the otherwise unremarkable borderline-sociopath MP for Lismore, this extensive partisan history of Irish rebellions claims a significant place in the development of increasingly entrenched sectarianism in nineteenth century Ireland. The book went through several editions in its first year of publication, 1801 (also the year of the Act of Union between Great Britain and Ireland), was highly regarded by the Protestant Unionist party in the years immediately after, and even earned the author an invitation to a duel from a fellow Irish MP. Engraved frontispiece portrait. 2 vols. 12mo. Bouillé was a French general who served in the West Indies and distinguished himself as a commander of French forces in the American Revolution; he was the cousin of La Fayette. He was also Lieutenant-General of the Royal forces in the days of the French Revolution, and remained loyal to the King, playing a major role in the plan for Louis XVI's escape which ended in the King's arrest at Varennes. Bouillé escaped to England where he supported the royalist cause, and where he died in 1800. These Memoires were first published in London in 1794 in translation; they were then re-translated from the English into French and published there in 1798. According the publisher of this edition, Bouillé's family, which consigned the original manuscript to him, claims that the English translation was faulty, filled with errors, incomplete, and disavowed by Bouillé himself.

Half-title. 36 copper-engraved plates after Pierre-Joseph Redouté (32) or Henri-Joseph Redouté (4), by Plée (33) or Sellier (3). Minor foxing. Twentieth century half green morocco and green cloth boards, spine with raised bands in six compartments, panelled and lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers and edges The first edition Michaux's magisterial monograph on all the known species of North American Oaks, illustrated by the best known botanical painter of all time. In this excellent and very beautiful monograph Michaux begins by giving an historical overview of the Oak, before giving detailed descriptions of all the American species he had encountered. Starting with the Latin binomial, he gives a brief description in botanical Latin, Latin synonyms and the name in French and English. This is followed by notes on the trees height when full-grown, and descriptions of the timber, leaves, flowers and its geographical distribution. The remainder of each entry is made up of Michaux's observations which concentrate on whether the tree is worth cultivating, and if so for what reason. Thirty-two of the plates in this work are particularly striking early examples of the work of Pierre-Joseph Redouté, the remaining four are after his brother Henri-Joseph. The classically understated line engraved plates allow the unerring sense of design of the master botanical painter to be fully appreciated. All of the main species are illustrated by one plate, and a number by two. These second plates include acutely observed studies of young plants or details of leaves. "André Michaux was sent to America in 1785 by the French government, which asked him to collect timber trees and plants useful as either food or medicine. Michaux. was accompanied by his young son, François André, and a gardener, Paul Saulnier. A nursery garden was established in New Jersey, not far from New York, where Saulnier was to be in charge of a base for collections waiting to be sent back to Europe. During the next ten years, thousands of trees were collected by Michaux [on his travels to the southern Appalachians, Spanish Florida, the Bahamas, and the Carolina mountains. These were taken to the royal nurseries at Rambouillet. [but] relatively few of the plants survived. A second Michaux nursery was established at Charleston, South Carolina, under the care of François André until 1790, when he went back to France [to study medicine]. Meanwhile his father traveled from Hudson's Bay to Florida and west to the Mississippi in his search for new plants. The elder Michaux returned to France in 1796" ( Oak Spring Sylva ). Here he tried unsuccessfully to raise money from the government for further exploration of North America, and eventually accepted a post on Baudin's expedition to Australia, leaving France in October 1800. This was the last time that François André was to see his father (he died in Madagascar in 1802), and the younger Michaux was left to see the present work through the presses. However, he was more successful in getting official backing and visited America twice more: firstly from 1801 to 1803 and finally from 1806 to 1809. This copy MacPhail's "b" issue, with the preferred complete form of the text (the prior issue including only four pages of text with brief descriptions compared to the present 49-pages of full descriptions).         LES JARDINS, POËME ..

Paris, 1801. xxxi,[1],166pp. Large octavo. Contemporary calf, spine gilt extra, gilt label, marbled edges. Frontis. Extremities and fore-tips a bit worn, some surface scarring and small nicks to lower board, large bookplate on front pastedown, a few minor marginal smudges, otherwise a very good copy, the text bright, crisp and fresh. Denoted a New Edition, considerably augmented. The fine engraved frontis is by Choffard after Monciau. Delille's most popular work of original poetry, first published in a preliminary form in 1782. The author's notes for the poem occupy the last forty pages of the text. Delille was an accomplished translator, notably of Virgil and Milton. His descriptive poem on the formal garden was popular as well in England, encompassing as it does descriptions of several of distinguished gardens across the channel, and this expanded text saw London printings almost immediately, and a number of deluxe/illustrated editions in the following decades. Brunet notes this edition adds 1100 lines to the poem. BRUNET II:576. VICAIRE III:122.

Bel exemplaire, propre. Norman, I, p. 418, n° 1144

Kodo zuroku [trans.: Illustrated Book on the Smelting of Copper]

27 full-page woodcuts (14 of which are color printed) by Tokei Niwa. 14, 6 folding leaves. Large 8vo, orig. wrappers (minor worming), orig. block-printed title label on upper cover, new stitching. Osaka: Sumitomo clan, ca. 1801-11. First edition of an important and fascinating illustrated work on the history and technology of smelting copper in Japan, which by the late 1670s had become the largest copper producing and exporting country in the world (replacing Sweden and replaced by China in the 1740s), with much of the copper being exported by the Dutch East India Company to European and Asian markets. Copper mining, refining, and exporting were the early primary businesses of what became the Sumitomo Corporation. Masuda (d. 1821), who describes himself as a "slave" (employee) of the Sumitomo clan of Osaka, provides a history of the introduction of liquation (or Seiger process; it had been invented in the early 15th century in Nuremberg) into Japan in 1591 by a Portuguese. The information was transmitted to Riemon Soga (1572-1636), a metallurgist and brother-in-law of Masatomo Sumitomo, the founder of the famous company. Japanese metallurgists modified the Seiger process and called it nanban-buki. The process spread throughout Japan and was first used to extract silver. By the middle of the 17th century, many silver mines had been exhausted and copper mines began production. Soon, there were more than 200,000 miners and 100,000 charcoal producers at 50 copper mines throughout Japan. The fine woodcuts are by Tokei Niwa (1760-1822), a prominent artist of the period, and 14 are color printed. They depict the stages of copper production from mining and hand sorting to smelting to casting into bars. Three of the plates show the steps of smelting the ore to produce black copper; the removal of silver is depicted on three further plates. The final 13 woodcuts, in black-&-white, show the tools used in the processes. All the plates have captions in Japanese describing the activities. One of the colored plates depicts men raising water from the mine to a height of 220 meters. The final six leaves of text, written in Chinese with Japanese reading marks, gives more details about nanban-buki along with an account of the Sumitomo clan and its important involvement in the copper industry. Fine copy and quite rare. ❧ Smith, Cyril Stanley & Shirakawa, Zenryu, Kodo Zuroku: Illustrated Book on the Smelting of Copper (1983).

(Escoffier, 110) Lady Frances Augusta Eliza Pierrepont was the daughter of Charles Pierrepont, 1st Earl Manvers and Anne Orton Mills. She married, firstly, Vice-Admiral William Bentinck, son of Captain John Albert Bentinck and Reniera van Tuyll van Serooskerken, on 20 October 1802. She married, secondly, Henry William Stephens on 30 July 1821, and died on 10 February 1847 Français

Jhts., goldgeprägter Rückentitel, Deckel berieben, oberes u. unteres u. Kapitale stark berieben, Kaptalband lose.

Portugal, no publisher, no date, [c.1801] - Unusual pair of engraved portraits, each (133 × 92 mm), now window-mounted side by side, framed and glazed. Very good. Scarce, attractive and highly interesting pair of portraits of Nelson produced in Portugal around 1801 after he had been made vice admiral of the blue. The left-hand engraving shows a romantically presented bust portrait in three quarter profile, wearing the sash of the Order of the Bath and a single Naval Medal. The background is blank. The second portrait had been elaborated to include the Star of the Order of the Crescent, created specifically for Nelson for his services to the Ottoman empire at the Battle of the Nile and received in November 1799, on the right breast of his coat; two medals hanging on the ribbon around his neck, St. Vincent and the recently acquired King's medal for the Nile (see comments on the Guzzardi portrait, Walker The Nelson Portraits p.80); the face has has been reworked into a somewhat sterner expression, the right eye obscured to suggest his blindness; and a cloudy sky and rigging added to the background. An entirely more atmospheric rendering. The engraved caption has been extended to include the words "of the Blue."

Message and Communication from the President of the United States to the Senate and House of Representatives; Delivered in the Commencement of the First Session of the Seventh Congress, the 8th of December 1801. With the Accompanying Documents. {Plus] No. Documents No. III-V. Accompanying the President's Communications to Congress, the 8th of December, 1801.

Samuel Harrison Smith,, Washington City: 1801 - Pamphlets (two), 8vo, first pamphlet unbound and uncut signature, 15, [1] pp; second unbound stitched, two fold out tables, 5, [3] pp. plus two foldout tables. Some browning, foxing and spotting, first starting to split at a few folds, minor chipping at edges; otherwise about very good. This is an early Washington City imprint, by Samuel Harrison Smith, a friend of Thomas Jefferson. One of the interesting features of these pamphlets is that they include a copy of the4 second census. The numbers show a population of over 5 million, and almost 900,000 slaves. There is also information on the expenses related to building gun ships, ports and the sale of some government assets. Thomas Jefferson (1746-1836) was the third president of the United States. This speech to Congress was delivered toward the end of his first year in office, and was basically a state of the union address. However, because Jefferson didn't want to be viewed as a king, he had a clerk make the presentation. National Archives
