Bound in a very pleasant full tan calf executed by Baytun Riviere. Black and red title labels, and compartments filled with a leaf and berry design. Gilt lines to the boards, with a leaf and berry design towards the corners between lines. Blind stamped vine-leaf border panel in the middle of each board. Gilt inner-dentelles, and all edges gilt, 236 mm tall. A beautiful volume. Samuel Ireland was the father of the Shakespeare forger W. H. Ireland.

In contemporary speckled, full tan leather, with gilt titling and tooling to spine, front board a little loose but holding, edges and corners bumped. Internally, faint evidence of bookplate to fpd, paper water marked 1799, (xxviii), 473 pp, 13 pls (of 13), 1 map, some light offsetting, (the plates are by Davies, engraved by Basire from the original drawings in the possession of Warren Hastings). Brunet 978. & Cordier Sinica 2909 -info).Turner, army officer in the East India Company and diplomatist, whose Account of an Embassy to the Court of the Teshoo Lama in Tibet (1800) was the first eye-witness report on Tibet and Bhutan to be published in English. The book remained the only account of those countries available to English readers until the publication in 1876 of the journals of George Bogle and Thomas Manning.         Perspektivische Vorstellung von dem Jubiläum der Ehrednen Constabler u. feuerwerker Gesellschaft in Zürich dn 19ten Juny A. 1786. Aquatinta-Radierung.

      53 x 68 cm, unter Passepartout in vergoldetem Rahmen, 30 x 46 cm , Minimal stockfleckig Johann Jakob Aschmann (1747- 1809) Landschaftszeichner und -maler, Kupferstecher. Vereinzelt Porträts wuchs in bescheidenen Verhältnissen als Sohn eines Tauners in Ludretikon-Thalwil auf. Mittellosigkeit zwang ihn, trotz seiner künstlerischen Begabung, nach nur mangelnder Schulausbildung zur Fabrikarbeit. Später genoss er ein Jahr dürftigen Malunterricht bei Johann Melchior Hurter in Schaffhausen. Dann wies ihn der Zürcher Maler und Kunsthistoriker Johann Kaspar Füssli zum Kunstverleger Wagner nach Bern, wo er bei der Herausgabe der Helvetischen Eisberge nach Caspar Wolfs Zeichnungen Arbeit fand. Nach seiner Rückkehr nach Thalwil heiratete er am 25.10.1774 die aus Jesingen (Württemberg) stammende Maria Dorothea Haaga, die neun Kinder zur Welt brachte. Der dritte Sohn betätigte sich schlecht und recht als Maler und Kopist nach Vorlagen seines Vaters. Von ihm sind etwa ein Dutzend Blätter unter dem Namen «Hans Jakob Aschmann Jünger» bekannt. Ab 1774 als selbständiger Maler tätig, entschloss sich Aschmann 1778 zur Herausgabe von Kupferstichen. Auf zahlreichen Studienreisen durch die gesamte Deutschschweiz fand er die für ihn passenden Sujets wie auch allfällige Aufträge einflussreicher Leute. Da aber sein künstlerisches Schaffen für den Unterhalt seiner Familie nicht genügte, betätigte er sich nebenbei in der Bewirtschaftung seines kleinen Heimwesens mit etwas Rebland. Seine unruhige Natur wie sein eigensinniger Charakter brachten ihn in Kontakt mit dem Gedankengut der Französischen Revolution. Als Wachtseckelmeister und Ehegaumer von Thalwil wurde er mit der Stäfner Bewegung 1795 in die Politik hineingezogen. Ein Künstler und Schöngeist, wollte er mit viel Eifer mithelfen, die wirtschaftliche Freiheit und menschliche Gleichheit anzustreben. Seine aufwieglerische Tätigkeit veranlasste die Zürcher Regierung, Aschmann nach Zürich in Gefangenschaft zu nehmen. Die Kriegsräte verurteilten ihn 1795 zu drei Jahren Zuchthaus. Um die Gefängniskosten ebenso wie den Unterhalt seiner Familie bestreiten zu können, wurde ihm gestattet, seine künstlerische Tätigkeit im Gefängnis auszuüben. Während dieser Zeit entstanden einige Dutzend Phantasieblätter. Als er 1798 nach Thalwil zurückkehrte, wählte man ihn für das ihm zugefügte Unrecht in das Amt des Unterstatthalters, das er bis 1803 ausübte. Durch seine politische Tätigkeit vergrösserte sich die Zerrüttung seiner finanziellen und familiären Verhältnisse derart, dass er in grosse Armut geriet. In diesem Elend starb Aschmann 1809 in seinem Heim in Thalwil an der Auszehrung. Aschmanns Schaffen war stark geprägt durch die Naturtreue seiner Darstellungen. In ihrer genauen Wiedergabe der damaligen Zeit zeigen seine Blätter eine Originalität, die für seine unkonventionelle Arbeitsweise charakteristisch ist. Aufgrund der bekannten Arbeiten sowie einiger Zeitungsanzeigen ist nachweisbar, dass Aschmann vor allem das Zürichbiet, die Nord- und Ostschweiz, Graubünden, die Innerschweiz, den Aargau und das Haslital bereiste. Bis heute sind folgende Arbeiten bekannt: Ein Reklameblatt; 46 numerierte Umrissstiche; 19 unnumerierte Umrissstiche; zwei Handwerksbriefe; Umrissstiche von Ereignissen (16 Serien, unter anderen Bockenkrieg; Bergsturz Goldau; Küsnacht; Überschwemmung); sechs Porträts; zwei Ölgemälde; sieben Arbeiten in Zusammenhang mit anderen Stechern; 246 originale Handzeichnungen. Es konnte nachgewiesen werden, dass der Bleuler-Verlag in Feuerthalen einzelne Platten aus Aschmanns Nachlass übernahm und mit neuer eingravierter Verlagsangabe und Bleulerschem Kolorit in den Verkauf brachte. Einen kleinen Teil übernahm auch Heinrich Füssli in Zürich, und der Maler Johann Martin Morat in Stühlingen benutzte teilweise Aschmann-Andrucke. Solida ed elegante legatura coeva in mezza pelle verde con punte, dorso liscio con ricchi fregi in oro e titoli su tassello in marocchino rosso. Esemplare particolarmente fresco e marginoso, in eccellente stato di conservazione. Opera in cui vengono descritti ed elegantemente illustrati con figure incise in rame gli avvenimenti che hanno caratterizzato la storia di Roma antica. La vicenda editoriale di questo ampio lavoro storico fu assai travagliata; la presente è la prima parte, unica apparsa, che avrebbe dovuto essere seguita da un'ulteriore suite di tavole riguardante la storia degli imperatori. Il nostro esemplare possiede un inizio di questa suite (formato dalle 30 tavole poste in fine) e che risulta pressochè sconosciuto e comunque non presente nelle altre copie censite. Cfr. Hinges worn and there are a few small gouges to the leather, mostly on the spine, else a near fine copy. 'This edition contains the late Constitutions of Vermont, Delaware, Georgia and Kentucky, with the Regulations for the Government of the Territory north-west of the River Ohio; also, the Amendments to the Constitution of Maryland;--not in any former edition.' Kentucky had been admitted to the Union in the previous year. NUC records only this collation. Scarce in original binding.

Territory of the United States' printed on heavy paper and coloured in outline in a contemporary hand.) (Occasional expert repairs to margins and folds). Expertly bound to style in half russia over contemporary speckled paper-covered boards, the flat spine divided into six compartments by double gilt fillets, red morocco lettering-piece in the second compartment. Lovely copy of a rare edition of Carey's important and early General Atlas. Carey's "American Atlas," printed in 1795 with 21 maps, was the first atlas printed in America. Carey's "General Atlas" was first published in 1796 with 45 maps. Most of the present atlas is devoted to the Americas with 27 of the 49 maps being of the region. Of the 27, the majority concern the United States and its territories, and incorporate the latest geographical knowledge available by what was to become one of the premier mapping firms in the United States. Two additional important maps, not included in the 1796 edition, are map 46 Seven Ranges of Townships... laid out by Congress and map 47 Part of the North Western Territory by Samuel Lewis, dated 1796. Leg. orig. in cart. alla rustica con nervi passanti e titoli manoscritti ai dorsi. Qualche naturale arrossatura ed ossidazione alle carte, ma esemplare genuino e marginoso, in barbe. Mancano (dall'origine) due carte fra le preliminari e l'indice del terzo volume. Celebre opera dello scienziato pavese (1761-1818) che fu allievo di Spallanzani e Scopoli e, più tardi, amico di Alessandro Volta con il quale intraprese il celebre viaggio a Parigi al fine di illustrare l'invenzione della pila elettrica. Molto interessante per lo studio della condizione della chimica italiana all'epoca. Precede l'opera il: Vocabolario della nuova nomenclatura chimica riformata ed accresciuta da L. Brugnatelli. Non comune.

Backed to restore losses to margin and to repair large tear in the upper right portion of the print, and to repair tear in bottom margin. 13 x 14 3/8 inches. 14 1/2 x 16 3/4 inches. A wonderful, rustic English shooting scene Julius Cæsar Ibbetson "was apprenticed to John Fletcher, a ship-painter at Hull. Ibbetson attracted public attention by his designs for ship decoration and by some scenery painted for the Hull Theatre, and his success encouraged him to seek his fortune in London in 1777. He was forced at first to work for Mr. Clarke, a picture dealer in Leicester Fields, but was able at the same time to acquire a thorough acquaintance with the works and methods of Dutch artists, besides learning all the tricks of the trade... In 1780 he married... In 1785 he exhibited at the Royal Academy A View of Northfleet, and continued to exhibit during succeeding years. Becoming acquainted with Captain William Baillie and others, he was introduced into good society, and was patronised by the nobility. In 1788 he accepted a post in Colonel Cathcart's embassy to China. Cathcart, however, died at Java during the voyage, and Ibbetson returned to England. He made many drawings during the voyage, and obtained nautical experience, which he afterwards turned to account in his pictures, but was not able to obtain any remuneration on his return... He sought relief from his misery in dissipation and convivial society, after the example of his friend, George Morland... This only led to further embarrassments, and in 1798 he quitted London for Liverpool to escape his creditors. Ibbetson lived quietly for some time near Ambleside in Westmoreland, visiting Scotland in 1800... A sign painted by Ibbetson for an inn at Troutbeck, near Ambleside, had some notoriety... He suffered further pecuniary losses through the defalcations of a friend, but the number of his commissions now enabled him to free himself to some extent from debt. At the invitation of one of his chief patrons, Mr. William Danby of Swinton Park, Ibbetson settled near that place in Masham, Yorkshire. Here he spent the remainder of his days... As a painter in oil of cattle and pigs Ibbetson has hardly been excelled in England, even by Morland... In his landscape-painting Ibbetson somewhat resembled Richard Wilson, R.A. He also painted small portraits in a neat and rapid manner. His paintings of animals were much prized, especially in Yorkshire, where they are often to be met with in private houses. Good Condition. 4 volumes in 1/4 leather over printed marbled boards, worn, corners reinforced early on with vellum, hinges cracked, boards loose. Curiously, the marbled paper covering the boards has the text of an early government document printed over it - printing is ca. 1704. Modest foxing, heavy to the plate of secret writing, occasional spots of discoloration, endpapers browned. Each complete with half titles. Volume III with the edges of 4 pages torn, apparently from a reading by candlelight incident judging from the slight burn marks to one page edge, there is a meaningful loss of text to the corner of 113-116. The first edition of Schiller's influential novel with the additions by Follenius. A sensation at the time, The Ghost-Seer is a cautionary novel of plots, obscure secrets, Jesuits and the occult. Though never completed, it nonetheless hit a nerve with Germans struggling with institutions that were failing to keep pace with the intellectual progress of the time - it sparked an avalanche of imitators from Wieland's Peregrinum Proteus to Grosse's The Genius. Schiller's version was published in 1789, the first German edition with the additions by Follenius was 1798. The first English edition was 1795 - this edition includes some, but not all, of Follenius's substantial additions to the original. With the plate of secret writing facing page 215.       London: G. and W. Nichol, and J. Wright,, 1800. Sent by the Governor-General of India in the Year 1795. Quarto (289 ×230 mm). Contemporary diced russia, title gilt to the spine, single fillet gilt panel to the boards framing a foliate roll in blind, single line edge-roll, edges sprinkled brown, marbled endpapers, double fillet to the turn-ins. 2 engraved folding maps by J. Walker after Dalrymple and Thomas Woods and 26 engraved plates by T. Medland, Vincent, and MacKenzie after Singey Bey, and others, 4 of them folding and 3 double-page. Half-title bound in. Spine a little sunned and mottled, very lightly rubbed on the joints, some off-setting from the plates, but overall a very good copy in excellent, unrestored contemporary condition. First edition of "one of the first detailed accounts of the country written in English. In just over 500 pages, it addressed the history, geography, culture, and economics of Burma" (ODNB). Also notable for the survey of the lower River Irrawaddy, the first reliable chart of it, which was carried out by Symes's colleague Thomas Woods and is illustrated in the second folding map. Superbly illustrated with plates of costumes, customs, architecture and arts, many by the Company-trained Bengali artist Singey Bey, and a suite of 8 botanical plates of the plants selected by the President of the Royal Society "as the most rare and curious among the copious and valuable collection made by Doctor Buchanan." Symes was sent to the court of King Bodawpaya of Burma, "to try to improve political and commercial relations," and to ascertain whether the French had begun to make inroads at the court. "The embassy was counted a success," and this his account "painted a generally favourable impression of Burma, emphasizing its civility, culture, and stability, while also hinting at the Burmese court's suspicions of the British." When Hiram Cox, the first British ambassador to be sent to Burma under the terms of Symes's agreements, was turned away "Cox blamed Symes for his failure, and for exaggerating Burmese good will and intentions." Symes was sent back following trouble on the Arakan border, his second embassy being notably less successful than the first; "Most interpretations of Anglo-Burmese relations, when dealing with Symes, have tended to echo Hiram Cox, and dismiss Symes's reports as overly optimistic and uncritical. However, if these reports are read carefully, Symes does not appear as credulous as some have made him out to be. He was well aware of the court's insularity and suspicions of outsiders, and he reckoned that misunderstandings would frequently punctuate diplomatic relations… his writings display a genuine fascination with Burmese society, and indicate that he was eager to seek some rapprochement with Burma." Symes died in 1809 of wounds sustained during Moore's retreat from Corunna. Later armorial bookplate of Charles Arthur Wynne Finch to the front pastedown.

Complete (including half-title), i-xvi + 254 pages + errata leaf, twenty-one aquatint plates. Covers and binding are in fine condition. Pages very good overall, slightly yellowed, first several pages have slight rippling and some light fox-spots. Some offsetting from plates as the original lacked plate-guards. Samuel Ireland was a notable engraver and famously the victim of the Shakespeare forgeries of his son, W. H. Ireland. Overall a very attractive copy.

Two volumes: [iv], 246; [iv], 276pp. Royal 8vo., full morocco, marbled endpapers, all edges marbled. The text is taken from that of the Didot folio edition, published at Paris in 1798. Illustrated with fifteen engravings by Bartolozzi, James Fittler, J. Neagle, and Sharp, after Gerard and Girodet. There is one plate in each book of the Aeneis, one in the Bucolica, and two in the Georgica. The impressions are good and the plates are clean. Two leaves in volume I (pp. 241-244) have closed tears to the top corner, not affecting text. Ink ownership to half-titles. Both volumes have been skillfully rebacked in maroon leather, which matches the original leather covers, and have replacement endpapers. Covers are diced with a gilt single-fillet outer boarder and a single-rule gilt panel with ornamental scalloped corners; the board edges are gilt- stamped with leaves and flowers. The covers show some rubbed spots and wear to extremities. The spines are in six compartments with two lettering pieces and ornamental tooling in the rest.         The Oblique-Leaved Begonia

      London: July 1st., 1800. Hand-coloured and colour-printed aquatint, stipple and line engraving by Caldwell. 22 x 16 9/16 inches. The most strikingly beautiful flower plates ever to be printed in England. "Begonias as we see them in glasshouse and garden today are a modern development unknown in Thornton's time, when a few species had been introduced to Europe. The particular species he chose for this picture, Begonia nitidia [Dryander], had not long been brought in from Jamaica by Sir Joseph Banks. Regarded as a fine plant then, there was as yet no hint of the important part it was to play one hundred years later in the breeding of the modern small-flowered bedding begonias, Begonis semperflorens. Historically, this picture is of interest as showing a basic species almost at the time it was originally introduced. It is itself an attractive plant with a smooth shiny stem and large glossy green leaves. The way its parts shine, reflecting what light there is, is such an outstanding characteristic of the plant that it provided part of its botanical name: the epithet nitidia means `shining'. That characteristic was superbly captured by the painter Philip Reinagle... and skilfully reproduced by the engraver Caldwell... It is one of Thornton's most attractive and beautiful plates." "...[Thornton] inherited a competent fortune and trained as a doctor. He appears to have had considerable success in practice and was appointed both physician to the Marylebone Dispensary and lecturer in medical botany at Guy's and St. Thomas's hospitals. But quite early in his career he embarked on his... great work. What Redouté produced under the patronage of L'Héritier, Marie Antoinette, the Empress Josephine, Charles X and the Duchesse de Berry, Thornton set out to do alone... Numerous important artists were engaged... twenty-eight paintings of flowers commissioned from Abraham Pether, known as `Moonlight Pether', Philip Reinagle, ... Sydenham Edwards, and Peter Henderson... The result... involved Thornton in desperate financial straits.... In an attempt to extricate himself he organized the Royal Botanic Lottery, under the patronage of the Prince Regent... it is easy to raise one's eyebrows at Thornton's unworldly and injudicious approach to publishing... ESTC: 2/1 (BL, Bodleian, and NY Public Library). ESTC attributes the book to the Rev. Weeden Butler the elder [1742-1823] (the author's father), and notes "this appears not to be a translation". Two subsequent editions appeared: Dublin, 1800; and a "corrected and enlarged" second edition, 1807. §Published in the guise of a translation from a contemporary account by the invalid friend of a kindly slave-owner (the supposed translation is problematic: the narrator is clearly either British or American, as was the "translator"). The story is set around a Jamaican slave revolt, part of it in the words of Zimao, the leader of the uprising, tracing his history from his upbringing, through his capture, to the present day. A 32 page appendix follows "consisting of extracts from the evidence delivered at the bar of the House of Commons, when that subject [the slave trade] was under the consideration of Parliament" [Monthly Review, Sept. 1800], that leaves no doubt as to the author's humanitarian motive. The book sets its stall at the outset, with this radical dedication: "To a Lady [possibly Mrs. Fitzherbert] eminent for her private qualities and her public station... The truly illustrious personage whose favour you enjoy, patronizes the sale of his fellow-mortals... His royal heart is kind and generous. Too long, however, has his royal ear been open to rich and crafty individuals, hackneyed in the traffic: to men, whose whole fortunes are exhaled from the holds of slaughter-houses, and whose avarice is drenched and glutted with blood-potations." §A significant, quite early, and extremely rare anti-slavery narrative. Full contemporary English red straight-grained morocco, with wide gilt borders, richlly gilt spines with raised bands, lettered in two compartments, a.e.g., frequent light shadow of offset from plates to text, frequent spotting to plates, but mostly in margins and on tissue guards. Overall, a beautiful set. Herbert 1442; Updike II, 121-22 and 188 . In 1789, Thomas Macklin, the London print and picture dealer, announced his plans for publication by subscription of an edition of the Bible to promote "the glory of the English school" of painting and engraving and "the interest of our Holy Religion." For the edition, a new type was cast, a special milling of fine paper ordered, and Macklin set about commissioning the paintings, as well as their rendering as engravings. The artists involved in the project included Jacques de Louthenbourg, Hugh Douglas Hamilton, John Opie, Richard Cosway, Benjamin West, Richard Westall, with additional contributions by Fuseli, Kauffmann, Reynolds, and Stothard. Slightly over seven hundred subscribers rose to the occasion, including among them the King, the Queen and the Prince of Wales. Macklin died in October of 1800, just five days after the completion of the last engraving, and the subsequent edition of the Apocrypha, emulating both the format and style of the Old and New Testaments, was published in 1816 by Cadell and Davies. Half-titles, section titles, 2pp. list of subscribers. 190 fine engraved plates, printed in colours, by and after Audebert, printed by Langlois (all with the plate captions printed in gold, most with gold highlights to the birds, 1 plate double-page). Contemporary diced russia, expertly rebacked to style, spines in seven compartments with raised bands, black morocco lettering-piece in the second compartment, red morocco in the fourth, the others with elegant repeat neo-classical design, gilt turn-ins. First edition, deluxe folio issue with the plate captions printed in gold: limited to 200 copies. A fine copy of "one of the most beautiful books of its era" ('Fine Bird Books) and the best early work on humming-birds, jacamars, promerops, tree-creepers and birds-of- paradise. The "colours of the birds and their handsome appearance have evidently been the cause of their selection for inclusion in the book. The plates ... are in beautiful colours ... [and] are among the best colour prints found in ornithology" (Anker). They were etched by Audebert from his own designs and those of the "very best painters of Paris and London." He received help with colouring from Louis Bouquet and with the printing in oil-colours from Langlois. The exact method used in the printing of the plates was of Audebert's own invention and involved the extensive use of gold for both the captions and the highlights. As Fine Bird Books points out, it is these "gold reflections of the plumage that renders this book unique and wonderful." The plates include three plates of details, 19 of Colibris; 50 of Oiseaux-Mouches; 6 Jacamars; 9 Pomerops; 88 Grimpereaux and 15 Oiseaux de Paradis. The text is largely by Vieillot who saw the work through to completion using Audebert's notes following the latter's death in 1800. Most of the back joint cracked. Small chiping to the title label. An ink spot covering the "u" in "Suecicae" at the title. A little smudging to the title and a couple of more leaves.The white at the bellies of the birds have oxidated into brown, as frequently is the case. Folds to the outer and inner margins of the plate. The inner fold touching 2 mm. of the image. A nice copy.. The present edition of Linné´s Fauna Suecicae - published by Retzius - comprise of vertebrates only. It was published by the very energetic professor Retzius at the University of Lund in southern Sweden. He specialized in several subjects, one of them natural history. The plate depicts Fringilla Flavirostris and Fringilla Lulensis. Engraved by Gapieux in 1800. The book was published in Leipzig in 1800. Scarce

In una nota a fondo pagina, avverte invece che l'indice non vi sarà, rimandando per questo ai due volumi di indici dei suoi repertori scientifici e letterari. Per i quattro volumi della biblioteca filologica, invece, troviamo un indice al primo volume. Francesco Pistolesi fu primo nonché perpetuo segretario dell'Accademia Labronica i cui statuti di fondazione furono sottoposti a Ferdinando III da Giuseppe Vivoli nel 1816. Assieme a Pietro Parenti, primo presidente, l'impegno fu quello di una biblioteca sempre più ricca, che attorno alla metà del secolo venne poi donata al comune di Livorno. Lo zibaldone consiste interamente di materiali trascritti (ed anche tradotti) da giornali, riviste, gazzette, pubblicazioni scientifiche dalle provenienze più disparate, in lingua italiana e francese, di argomenti prevalentemente naturalistici, con una preferenza per ciò che riguarda la geologia, la meteorologia, i terremoti, i vulcani, i mari.

Appealing recent brown quarter morocco over linen boards, raised bands, red morocco label. Front flyleaf with ownership inscription of "G. D. / Canonbury"; title page with small, discreet embossed stamp of "Mark Pattison, Lincoln College, Oxon" (see below for both). In exceptionally fine condition inside and out. This is a series of brief biographies of 165 English poets who flourished between the years 1270 and 1603, beginning with Robert of Gloucester and ending with Queen Elizabeth herself. According to DNB, "it includes considered accounts of Shakespeare and Marlowe, a well-written introductory ‘discourse on poets and poetry';, a panegyric on his brother John, and a reticent allusion to his famous uncle," John Milton. Phillips was educated by Milton and later served as his uncle's amenuensis, after the poet's eyesight failed. The editor here, Sir Samuel Egerton Brydges (1762-1837), had a great desire to achieve literary fame, but "he was unhappily led to mistake his delight in reading great works of literature for an evidence of his capacity to produce similar works himself," and his original imaginative works are undistinguished. (DNB) He nevertheless did good service for British literature by producing a number of useful bibliographies, and by seeking out and editing for re-publication both the works of standard authors and rare works which had previously been accessible only to a few wealthy collectors. The provenance here does a great deal to distinguish our copy. Our earlier owner, "G. D. / Canonbury," is surely George Daniel of Canonbury Square, Islington, who amassed one of the most extensive and outstanding collections of dramatic literature, early Shakespeare editions, and Elizabethan ballads. Our other known owner, Mark Pattison (1813-84), was the head of Lincoln College at Oxford University from 1861 and an author and editor of considerable importance. According to DNB, "he had the reputation of being the most learned man in England.

Äldre namnteckning "Recklin"? på titelbladet. Ur Ericsbergs bibliotek. Collijn sp. 778. Se Runeby s. 410ff. Detta är duodesupplagan, som troligen är tryckt i Holland. I Paris trycktes tidigare samma år en upplaga i kvarto. Detta är ett konstitutionellt ställningstagande av Rosenhane mot enväldiga tyranner, personifierade av kardinal Mazarin, vilken Rosenhane i skriften direkt angriper. Rosenhane förfäktar här samma åsiker och synpunkter som han framfört i den svenska debatten, nämligen att makten skulle delas mellan monarken och rådet, dvs högadeln. Diplomaten, riksrådet och hovmannen Schering Rosenhane (1609-63) skickades 1647, efter att ha varit observatör vid fredsförhandlingarna i Münster, som svensk minister till Paris, med uppdrag att skaffa franska subsidier till Sverige. Rosenhane sympatiserade dock med Frondens opposition mot Mazarin, vilket misskrediterade honom hos denne, och efter att ha publicerat denna broschyr, vilken fick mycket uppmärksamhet, blev situationen för Rosenhane omöjlig i Paris och Kristina fick återkalla honom till Sverige. Han skickades dock genast ut på nya uppdrag. Närmast hamnade han som medlare mellan Sverige och ärkestiftet Bremen

        The Blue Passion Flower [pl. XVII]

      London: Jan. 1800. Hand-coloured and colour-printed aquatint, stipple and line engraving by Caldwell. Sheet size: 21 1/2 x 16 1/2 inches. One of the most strikingly beautiful flower plates ever to be printed in England. "[Passiflora caerulea L.] The species of Passion Flower depicted in this plate, a native of Brazil and Peru and known in Europe since 1699, was the first discovered that was hardy in the cooler regions of the earth and could therefore, in Thornton's time, when glasshouses were less common, be more easily grown over a larger area of the world. Its flowers are only faintly scented and last but one day, but they are produced over several months, and plants flowering first in June often continue until October. In this plate both flowers and leaves have been depicted by the painter, Philip Reinagle, with life-like accuracy and engraved by Caldwell with a masterly fidelity. The delicate stipple of the flowers and their modelling, and that of the leaves is of a standard not often reached." (Ronald King, The Temple of Flora by Robert Thornton, 1981, p. 80) Thornton's The Temple of Flora is the greatest English colour-plate flower book. "...[Thornton] inherited a competent fortune and trained as a doctor. He appears to have had considerable success in practice and was appointed both physician to the Marylebone Dispensary and lecturer in medical botany at Guy's and St. Thomas's hospitals. But quite early in his career he embarked on his...great work. What Redouté produced under the patronage of L'Héritier, Marie Antoinette, the Empress Josephine, Charles X, and the Duchesse de Berry, Thornton set out to do alone... Numerous important artists were engaged...twenty-eight paintings of flowers commissioned from Abraham Pether, known as `Moonlight Pether,' Philip Reinagle, ...Sydenham Edwards, and Peter Henderson...The result...involved Thornton in desperate financial straits...In an attempt to extricate himself he organized the Royal Botanic Lottery, under the patronage of the Prince Regent...It is easy to raise one's eyebrows at Thornton's unworldly and injudicious approach to publishing...But he produced...one of the loveliest books in the world." (Alan Thomas, Great Books and Book Collecting, pp.142-144) Second state of three of this plate from The Temple of Flora. "Three very definite states...First state: the main stem and the stems of the bud and the leaf in the upper centre have a pronounced shadow with hard outlines. The dark patch of shading to the left of the base of the column has a hard upper edge. The part of the leaf to the right of the fruit is in aquatint only and so is the leaf projecting to the left beyond the column. The dark shading to the right of the column above the leaf has a jagged edge and the cloud above has an indistinct edge. Second state: the shadows of the stems of the upper centre are smaller and the edges are softer. The dark patch of shading is softened. The aquatint on the leaves mentioned above is strengthened with cross-hatched lines. There are added horizontal lines on the base of the column near the fruit. Third state...aquatint on the leaves and buds; the indistinct cloud has now a white edge, and there is...line rework[sic.] on many of the leaves. The flowers are no longer all printed in colours as before." (Handasyde Buchanan, Thornton's Temple of Flora, London, 1951, p.18)

      The two reports which began the monumental effort to publish England's public records, principally devoted to determining which records had survived and where they were; with twenty full page engravings, many folding, including Magna Carta.       Martinet, Paris no date (c. 1800). 8vo. With 96 hand-coloured full-page engraved plates numbered 201-300. Two have double numbers (213-14 and 223-24) and two are double page engravings (255-56 and 261-62). No text leaves or titleleaves - just the plates. Bound in a contemporary red paper binding mounted on modern red cloth. The engravings are almost all stainless and without foxing - one plate (204) has a minor stain across. Bookplate on pastedown (the Danish scholar of theatre history Klaus Neiiendam).. Beautiful and lively engravings of theatre scenes in Paris in the early 19th century. They give an impression of not just the costumes but also the scenography

        An album containing ten watercolour and gouache drawings of botanical arrangements

      [circa 1800]. Oblong folio. (9 1/2 x 12 7/8 inches). 10 original watercolour and gouache drawings on Chinese pith paper (each approx. 8 x 11 1/2 inches), most with small areas heightened with gum arabic, each tipped onto a backing sheet at each corner and bordered by strips of pale blue paper that are also tipped to the backing sheet (four with insignificant splits to the pith paper, as usual). Original gilt-patterned paper over pasteboard, green cloth ties. A lovely early album of fine Chinese flower paintings, in remarkably fine condition. Despite its entirely Chinese origins this album was almost certainly produced for a western patron: perhaps a gift from an East India Company employee to his wife, or a Yankee clipper captain for his daughter. It contains a very fine selection of watercolours executed on pith-paper: a material that rarely survives in anything approaching fine condition. The drawings are all of arrangements of sprigs from flowering plants together with individual blooms. The intention of these drawings was not to provide dry scientifically-accurate botanical drawings, but to produce designs that were pleasing and harmonious. Flowers include Hibiscus, Gardenia, Chrysanthemum, Quince, Morning Glory, Camellia and two butterflies. It later became the custom to instruct the Chinese artists in the art of western botanical drawing and also supply them with good quality western paper to work on. The apparent lack of any foreign materials or method suggest an earlier date for this album, although the style of drawing did remain popular through most of the 19th century.
