Oiseaux Dores ou a Reflets Metalliques. Histoire Naturelle et Generale des Colibris, Oiseaux-Mouches, Jacamars et Promerops/ Histoire Naturelle et Generale des Grimperaux et des Oiseaux de Paradis.

1800. Paris, AN XI- (1800-) 1802. 2 volumes. Large folio (500 x 320mm). With 190 (1 double-page) colour-printed engraved plates by Audebert, many heightened with gold, printed by Langlois. Contemporary red half morocco, richly gilt ornamented spines in 7 compartments. A beautifully bound and very clean copy, of one of two hundred copies in folio with the captions printed in gold. "Its plates, heightened with gold, and so finished that they are little less than hand-illuminated engravings, make this one of the most beautiful books of its era... It is the gold reflections of the plumage that render the book unique and wonderful" (Fine Bird Books). Napoleon initiated a series of magnificent natural history publications that would vie with those undertaken to the order of Louis XIV, such as the present book together with Levaillant's superb ornithological monographs as well as the works by Redoute. The colour-printing is by Langlois, he did most of Levaillant's plates, and was one of the most celebrated colour-printers of France. The general title of the work is actually taken from the half-titles, each volume treating several genera and having its own title page. Provenance: With the heraldic bookplate of L.V. Ledebour, Rotterdam. Fine Bird Books p. 56; Nissen IVB, 16; Ronsil 103; Anker 14..

Kündigt weitere Aufsätze an.

Nouvelle edition. 2 Bände in 1. 108; 92 S. Mit 20 Kupfertafeln. 12°. In modernem Schuber.

London, 1800.. . "The prettiest edition, owing to the combined efforts of two of the greatest artists in this genre" (Lewine zur Cazin-Ausgabe 1785). - Unterschiedlich stockfleckig, vereinzelt stärker. Die Kupfer in klaren Abdrucken. - Hayn/G. VII 629 ff. u. III 404. Vgl. Gay/L. III 1211 ff. (sehr ausführlich), Barbier IV 708, Cioranescu 8359 (nennt beide Autoren), Lewine 370 f., Sander 1397 und Cohen/R. 735 (alle Montigny).

The Sportsman's Companion: or Portraitures, Pedigrees and Performances, of the Most Eminent Race Horses & Stallions, Represented in Variety of Attitudes. Interspersed with Tail-Pieces & Embellishments Alluding to the Sport. Calculated for the Utility and Entertainment of the Nobility, Gentry, Breeders, &c.

London, J. Barker, c. 1800.. 8vo. Letterpress title page and 40 engr. plates by James and Henry Roberts, engr. index leaf, and publisher's 4-page catalogue (with woodcut image of cocks fighting). Stitched in wrappers.. Fine series of plates, each depicting a famous horse with his rider or stable-hand, and recording its pedigree, qualities and racing record, together with the owner's name. The final plate shows the most famous of all, the Godolphin Arabian (the called the "Bay Arabian, the property of the Right Hon.ble the Earl of Godolphin"), foaled in Yemen around 1724: "This extraordinary horse became a private stallion soon after his arrival in this kingdom, and got a greater number of fine horses of just temper with superior speed than any Arab ever did. He was the Sire of Lath, Dismal, Cade, Bajazet, Babraham, Phenix, Dormouse, Regulus, Skewball, Sultan, Blanck, Slugg, Noble, Tarquin, Blossom, the Godolphin Gelding, Shepherdess, Amelia, and many others besides stallions and brood mares, all in the highest esteem; he dies at Hogmagogg Hills, Dec. 1753, in the 29th year of his age". - Among the other horses are Lath, the Godolphin Arabian's offspring by Roxana; Basto (son of the Byerly Turk); Old Scar, whose ancestry included the Oglethorpe Arabian and Darcy's Yellow Turk, etc. The horses pictured all ran between 1708 and 1755. The first edition was published in about 1760, and this Barker edition some forty years later. This copy has no watermarks, but the books listed in J. Barker's catalogue of publications were mostly published in the 1790s. - Spine rubbed and bumped; slight wear to edges and corners. An excellent copy with two small tears imperceptibly restored. - Of the utmost rarity: the only copy recorded at auction during the last decades is the Gloucester copy (Christie's, Jan. 27, 2006, lot 592). - Huth, p. 38. Manuscript pattern book for ornamental lace tablecloths.

Probably Southern France, c. 1800.. Elephant folio (76 x 53 cm). 16 sheets (12 double-page, 2 double-page and folding, 2 single folio) with a total of 28 designs in the original size for borders, corner-pieces, centre-pieces and other ornaments, all in pen and ink and watercolour; most designs captioned in French with prices; the designs are drawn on translucent paper which has been laid against another plain sheet, some of these plain sheets with small old repaired tears, no damage to translucent sheets; bound in contemporary half maroon morocco and marbled boards.. An unusual and eye-catching pattern book for intricate ornamental lacework for embroidery for tablecloths. A background colour of orange, red, or yellow painted on the verso of the translucent sheets, results in spectacular trompe l'oeil effects of the lace designs painted in greys, whites, cross hatching, and reddish shading on the recto. The designs show elaborate ornamental borders, with figurative elements such as domestic or pastoral scenes, or portrait medallions, there are mermaids, cornucopia, or floral, rocaille or arabesque ornamentation. Most of the designs are historically backward looking, as befits the age, although one of the designs, a curious 'cubist' hen design, would not be out of place in the early 20th century. - A lace expert at the Victoria & Albert Textile Department suggested that the technique and lace designs in this pattern book might be associated with the Burano School of Lace. The Burano School of Lace was founded by Countess Adriana Marcello in 1871 and is a needle lace with its distinct construction, joining motifs with a net ground. Some of the designs here are constructed in that way, but others are not. The manuscript captions in French and prices in French Francs may indicate that the pattern book was put together in southern France rather than Italy.

Teutsche Ornithologie oder Naturgeschichte aller Vögel Teutschlands. Herausgegeben von Borkhausen, Lichthammer und Bekker dem Jüngern.

1800. Damstadt, im Verlage der Herausgeber, 1800-1811. Folio (450 x 300mm). 21 parts (of 22), bound in 2 volumes. With 126 hand-coloured engraved plates. Contemporary half calf, gilt ornamented spines with 2 gilt lettered labels (slightly rubbed). A fine large copy of one of the most splendid German bird books. As usual without the last part, which was published in 1817. This final part is almost always lacking due to the interruption of publication by the Napoleonic wars. Our copy contains all the 21 printed upper wrappers to the parts. A great rarity is the title-page which is found in a few copies and here replaced by the printed wrapper to the first part. Many bibliographies consider the work complete in the first edition with 21 parts. The 22nd part was in fact the first part published of the second edition. "... a work by which it was attempted to create a German parallel to the sumptuous ornithological works of other countries, notably of France, e.g. Levaillant's works, to which it was compared at that time ... and with which it is quite comparable on account of its beautiful plates. These were drawn, engraved, printed, and coloured, by Susemihl in co-operation with his brother, J.Th. Susemihl, and lateron his son, Eduard Susemihl" (Anker 52). "Nicht minder lobenswert ist auch die 'Teutsche Ornithologie', die Johann Conrad Susemihl gemeinsam mit seinem Bruder Johann Theodor und später mit seinen Kindern Eduard und Emilie in Darmstadt mit Hilfe eines Kreises begeisterter Naturfreunde schulf... die Tafeln, die in Stich wie Kolorit zu den Spitzenleistungen des späten Kupferstiches gehören... (Nissen p. 53). The work is frequently listed under Borkhausen. One plate in part 10 lacks small part of lower corner not affecting the illustration, part 11 with some marginal dampstaining at the inner margin. Schlenker 55,1; Nissen IVB, 907; Fine Bird Books 61..

Eighteenth-century illustrated manuscript sample book of harness designs and other elaborate and decorative carriage horse tack.

[Vienna, c. 1800].. 2 vols. Oblong small folio (23.5 x 36.8 cm and 25.4 x 39.4 cm). 66 pen-and-ink, watercolour and gouache drawings of horses, most highlighted with silver and gold (one folding), all signed, each within a black ruled border, most trimmed and mounted onto larger sheets at a period date. Early marbled paper spines. Housed in an early calf-backed marbled paper covered faux-book box, metal clasps.. Unique illustrated manuscript trade catalogue, with each image depicting a horse in elaborate carriage horse tack. The drawings were executed by Michael Fölsch himself, one of the foremost Viennese makers and sellers of luxury tack in the early 19th century, to show prospective clients possible designs for their carriage horses. Every single drawing is signed by the artist: Fölsch's talent for draughtsmanship and colouring was hitherto unknown and is remarkable for a leather craftsman who probably never received training as a painter. The breadth and complexity of the designs, and the use of gold and silver, is impressive, suggesting that such bespoke equipment was intended for the wealthy elite. - Provenance: first in the equestrian library of the Imperial stablemaster Franz Wenzel Schleichart von Wiesenthal (engraved bookplate on verso of box), who came from a great dynasty of stablemasters and horsebreakers that included his father as well as his two younger brothers Anton Philipp and Johann Joseph; latterly in the collection of Franz Josef II, Fürst von und zu Liechtenstein (1906-89, armorial bookplate).

Sketches of the History of America - Signed by Dewitt Clinton

Callender?s ?History of America? Inscribed by DeWitt Clinton Summary: Controversial book attacking Hamilton and Adams, from the scandalous Jeffersonian journalist. Though this book was not cited in Callender?s trial, he would be convicted of seditious libel under the Sedition Act two years later, in 1800. The excesses of the Federalist Party ? exacerbated by infighting between supporters of John Adams and Alexander Hamilton, each of whom draw stinging criticism in this tract ? helped bring about the election of Thomas Jefferson in 1800. DeWitt Clinton. Signed Book. James T. Callender. Sketches of the History of America. Philadelphia: Snowden & M?Corkle, 1798, 1st ed. 263 pp., period calf backed marbled boards, morocco title label. Signed by Clinton on the title-page.# 21414 $1,950 Excerpts:[p. 93, on Alexander Hamilton?s affair with Maria Reynolds:] ?The object in [Hamilton] publishing this correspondence is to prove that the connection between Reynolds and the ex-secretary did not refer to the purchase of certificates, but to the charms of Mrs. Reynolds. Yet Mr. Hamilton and his friends have always enlarged on his poverty. The scale of expence in this affair disagrees with that supposition. In eighteen months Maria, must have cost him at least about eighteen hundred dollars. The expence is extravagant in proportion to its end. It revolts against his well known character for economy. He says that he was afraid of having the matter known to Mrs. Hamilton. Yet in her absence, he had frequent interviews with Mrs. Reynolds at his own house. This betrays but small regard for the secret ...? [p. 258, on President Adams?s monarchism:] ?So much bustle about a president?s speech, evidently shews that we are ambitious of posting towards monarchy. Speaking of the late birth day of general Washington, a federal newspaper has these words. ? ?Two public companies, and many private parties, observed this POLITICAL CHRISTMAS, and HALLOWED it*!? it is believed that no English print was ever polluted with such abject profanation. Mr. Adams was not contented with scolding at France. he hath since been inveighing against those who disapprove his conduct ...? DeWitt Clinton (1796-1828), a prominent New York politician in the early republic, graduated from Columbia University. In the late 1790?s he served as secretary to his uncle George Clinton (1739-1812), longtime Governor of New York (and later, Vice President). In 1798, Clinton aided in the Jeffersonians? attempts to defend journalists convicted of seditious libel. For example, he helped raise funds to pay the fine of Vermont Congressman Matthew Lyon, to secure his release from prison. Clinton was a major promoter of the study of natural history in New York City, and was a founder of the New-York Historical Society. He won election to the U.S. Senate, serving from 1802-1803, and then served three terms as Mayor of New York City (1803-1807, 1808-1810, 1811-1815). Clinton ran for president against James Madison in 1812, but was defeated in a surprisingly close race. He moved on to win election as Governor of New York, serving from 1817-1822 and 1825-1828. He was the foremost advocate of the Erie Canal (derisively called ?Clinton?s Ditch? by opponents), guiding it to completion in 1825. James Thomson Callender (1758-1803) is described by Thomas Jefferson?s biographer Dumas Malone as ?the most unscrupulous of the Republican pamphleteers and the most notorious scandalmonger of the era.? A refugee from Scotland, he made a name for himself in the United States in 1796 with his publication of the facts of the romantic liaison between Alexander Hamilton and Maria Reynolds. The present book continues the assaults on Hamilton and President Adams, mixed with effusive praise for Jefferson. After Jefferson was elected president, he rejected Callender?s pleas for pecuniary aid in 1801, prompting Callender to turn on him. In 1802 he published the rumors about Jefferson?s relationship with his slave mistress, Sally Hemings, which have echoed through history to the present day. References:Evans 33485; Sabin 10070; Not in Howes.Cornog, Evan. A TREATISE CONCERNING POLITICAL ENQUIRY, AND THE LIBERTY OF THE PRESS

New York: Printed by George Forman...for the author, 1800.. 296pp. Antique half calf and marbled boards. Lightly foxed. Light dampstaining to upper corner of first few leaves. Very good. Wortman's book is the foremost expression of American libertarian thinking on freedom of speech in its formative stages, stating more fully than any of his fellow Jeffersonian Democrats the case for freedom of expression. Leonard Levy writes: "Tunis Wortman, a New York lawyer who was prominent in Tammany politics, contributed pre-eminently to the emergence of American libertarianism in his book...It is, in a sense, the book that Jefferson did not write, but should have. Devoid of party polemics and of the characteristically American preoccupation with legal and constitutional problems, it is a work of political philosophy that systematically presents the case for freedom of expression...the outstanding characteristics of the book are its philosophic approach and its absolutist theses." From the premise of the Declaration of Independence that the people have the right to dissolve political bonds, Wortman implied an "unlimited right" for individuals and society to express political opinions. For Wortman, a society interested in furthering knowledge or truth must leave speech "entirely unshackled." He held that open debate furthered the ability of society to arrive at the wisest course of action. He argued that the effect of the Alien and Sedition Acts was self-defeating, since coercion could not suppress thought, but only its expression, and so would inevitably lead to a lack of faith in the government, which he viewed as a worse consequence than any breach of peace. Levy concludes: "Wortman's treatise is surely the pre- eminent American classic, because of its scope, fullness, philosophical approach, masterful marshalling of the facts, and uncompromisingly radical view." Pianta del Forte Beneventano detto Longone.

1800 circa.

[Philadelphia]. 1800.. Stipple engraving, 14 1/2 x 11 inches, matted to 20 x 16 inches. Minor toning and soiling. Very good. Edward Savage (1761-1817) is best known for his portrait of the Washington family, completed in 1795. He worked as a painter and engraver in Philadelphia until 1801, and was also proprietor of the Columbian Gallery, which opened in 1796. This portrait of Adams is the second state of the plate, in which the word "second" has been added to the title and with the attribution reading, "Painted by E. Savage in 1800." Stauffer notes that this plate "may only have been published by Savage, and not engraved by him." Still, a handsome and dignified portrait of America's second president, from a painting by Savage. STAUFFER 2744.

[AUTOGRAPH NOTE, SIGNED, BY JOHN MARSHALL AS SECRETARY OF STATE, INSTRUCTING HIS CORRESPONDENT ON HOW TO OBTAIN RECORDS OF A CASE DECIDED BY THE SUPREME COURT]

Washington. July 7, 1800.. [1]pp. on a 6 x 9 3/4 inch sheet. Foxed, else very good. A brief but interesting note in the hand of John Marshall and signed by him a year before he became the fourth Chief Justice of the United States. Though the note relates to the business of the Supreme Court it was actually written by Marshall while he was Secretary of State, less than a month after he assumed that office. Marshall writes to a Mr. Temple: "If you will call at the office of the Prothonotary, I think the officers there will be pleased to show you any record of any case that has been disposed of by the Supreme Court. The case to which you seek access has been decided unanimously." Marshall had been a prominent jurist since the mid-1780s, and in 1798 actually declined his first appointment to the Supreme Court, as an Associate Justice. Despite that he had argued before the Supreme Court, and was clearly well informed as to its workings, as is indicated by this note. This Marshall letter is not listed in THE PAPERS OF JOHN MARSHALL. A nice John Marshall manuscript, relating to the workings and decisions of the Supreme Court.

Ship Passport for the Brig Milford of Baltimore to load at Port Republicain, Santo Domingo, 1800

Port Republicain: 1800 - Bifoloium, printed permit of on recto of first leaf under the masthead of Toussaint Louverture as "Général en Chef de l'Armée de Sain-Domingue", accomplished in manuscript. Lightly browned, separating at the fold, and with creases from old folds, but overall very good. Wood-engraved cartouche of the French Republic with the figure of Liberty, seated on a cannon barrel, laurel wreath in one hand and a staff with Phrygian cap in the other, an orb and sceptre beneath her feet. Ship's passport, issued under the authority of Toussaint Louverture, né Toussaint Bréda, as "Général en Chef de l'Armée de Sain[t]-Domingue", and de facto Governor, in which position he had recently been confirmed by the newly-installed First Consul, Napoleon Bonaparte. Within a year Toussaint had conquered Spanish Santo Domingo against Napoleon's explicit instructions, and, fearful of the restoration of slavery, had promulgated a new constitution confirming his powers without consulting his French masters. Bonaparte's reprisal was rapid, refusing to recognise the constitution he dispatched a 20,000 man force under General Leclerc. After a brief, vicious conflict Toussaint negotiated an amnesty for his generals, and retired to his estates, only to be arrested and deported to France, where he died in prison in April 1803. On his voyage to exile Toussaint remarked to chef de division Capt. Daniel Savary that in overthrowing him "on n'a abattu que le tronc de l'arbre de la liberté des nègres; il repoussera par les racines, parce qu'elles sont profondes et nombreuses [they have felled only the trunk of the tree of liberty for blacks; it will grown again from its numerous and deep roots]" And so it was to be; led by Toussaint's right-hand man Jean-Jacques Desallines, the rebel forces defeated Rochambeau at the Battle of Vertiéres in November 1803, and on 1 January 1804 the island declared independence under the name used by its indigenous people, the Taino, Ayiti or Haïti. Thus ended the only slave rebellion in history to end in the establishment of an independent nation, the first black republic. In 1998 a memorial panel to Toussaint Louverture was installed at the Panthéon in Paris reading; "Combattant de la liberté, artisan de l'abolition de l'esclavage, héros haïtien mort déporté en 1803 [Champion of liberty, architect of the abolition of slavery, Haitian hero died in exile in 1803]". The present document gives permission for the six-gun brig Milford of Baltimore, Captain Littleton Waters, to load her cargo of sugar in five days "without molestation or detention." Signed by Toussaint, with customs stamp; and the ten lines of manuscript in English specifying the terms of the Milford's visit, countersigned by Hugh Cathcart, a Jamaica merchant, and at that time the British agent at Port-au-Prince, and Robert Ritchie, the American consul. The merchants of Baltimore were heavy investors in the trade with Saint-Domingue/Santo Domingo, and during Toussaint's struggle with the French this was to lead to problems, with Jefferson supporting the colonial power, and America's merchantmen going armed - like the Milford - to fend off French privateers enforcing the blockade on ports under rebel control. An interesting and attractive document from Haiti's slave rebellion, Toussaint Louverture's signature is far from common.
