      - Altkolorierter Kupferstich b. - Oben rechts in Manuskript "N. XI." - Extrem seltener Einblattdruck! This very rare map belongs to a never finished project for the atlas of the so called Società Calcografia, a simple commercial trade realized by the two main Venetian publishers of the XVIII century, Antonio Zatta and Giuseppe Antonio Remondini. The term Società Calcografica has been deduced from the map of the world, which is part of the collection and bears in the lower cartouche the French writing "à Venise Chez la Societè Chalcographique". As already stated, the project was never finished for no atlas containing these maps has ever been listed in any bibliography. Very likely, then, the maps have been sold individually, or maybe as part of smaller, custom collections. The maps of the collection derive from Paolo and Francesco Santini’s plates, used by Remondini in his 1782/4 "Atlas Universelle" and from the plates of Antonio Zatta’s "Nuovo Atlante" published in 1796. Santini’s maps have been beautifully enriched, using the system of small, masked plates which can be perceived through the platemarks on the paper, with great cartouches according to the classical style of Zatta and have been probably engraved by the members of his staff, Pasquali, Zuliani and Pitteri. The cartouches bear very often historical descriptions and maybe the maps have been realized to depict the great geographic changes of the peninsula during the Napoleonic period. In our opinion, the two publishers worked together to the realization of the project until Antonio Zatta died (1804), and the complete atlas was never finished because Giuseppe Antonio Remondini also died in 1811. Beneath the title is a four-line inscription, ' Adorned with all the charms in which Nature can array her; bedecked with beauty, youth, sprightliness, innocence, modesty and tenderness, breathing sweetness, from her rosy lips, and darting brightness from her sparkling eyes the lovely Sophia comes!' Here she is in a Regency dress rather than an early 18th century one. This print is sometimes known as the 'Skipping Girl': physical exercise has disturbed her bodice. Provenance: Philips Trust

Annuaire de la Republique Francaise, calcule pour le meridien du Caire, l'an IX de l'ere francaise.

Cairo, de l'Imprimerie Nationale, an IX [1800/1801].. Small 4to. 68, (2), 48 pp. Title-page printed in red. Contemp. half calf with gilt spine.. Rare Cairo imprint. Includes navigational tables, a concordance between the Muslim and the French Republican calendar, and a comparison of French and Egyptian units of measure. Of particular importance is a table of French army in the Orient, showing the members of the administration, of finances, of the Commission of Sciences and Arts, of the Institute, etc. - Only in October 1798 had J. J. Marcel arrived in Cairo with his employees and types to organize the Imprimerie Orientale, thus introducing modern printing to the Arab world. "The expedition of Napoleon Bonaparte to Egypt from 1798 until 1801 was a prelude to modernity. It was to change permanently the traditional Arab world [...] The French brought Arabic typography to Egypt, where it was practised under the supervision [...] of Jean Joseph Marcel [...]. Only a few days after the French troops landed [...] they set up the Imprimerie Orientale et Francaise there. It was an extraordinarily important turning point. For, leaving aside the Hebrew printing presses in Egypt of the 16th to the 18th centuries, until this date announcements and news adressed to Arabs there, as well as in other parts of the Arab-Islamic world, had been spread only in hand-writing or orally, by criers, preachers or storytellers" (D. Glass and G. Roper, cf. below). - Careful repairs to binding. From the library of the British physician and army surgeon Sir Robert Alexander Chermside (1787-1860) with his bookplate. Rare; only 3 copies in France (Paris, Strasbourg, Lyon). - Geiss 17. De Meulenaere 17. OCLC 492265052. Deschamps, L'Imprimerie hors l'Europe, p. 69 & 28.

Second, deluxe edition of "Ampère's greatest work," Theorie Mathematique… or Memoir on the Mathematical Theory of Electrodynamic Phenomena, Uniquely Deduced from Experience (DSB). Widely referred to as "the Principia of Electrodynamics," with this work Ampère founded the science of electrodynamics, now known as electromagnetism. "Volta's invention of the pile c. 1800 made it possible to experiment with steady electric currents and led to Oersted's discovery, in 1820" of an action of electricity on magnets that suggested "the presence of a magnetic force that is perpendicular both to the direction of the wire and to the shortest line from the wire to the magnet" - to the orientation one would expect. (Torretti, The Philosophy of Physics, 82). "Ampère, after an extraordinary bout of experimentation and mathematical theorizing, succeeded in explaining electromagnetic interaction by central forces acting at a distance… Ampère accounts for all electrodynamic and electromagnetic phenomena known to him by a force acting at a distance between infinitesimal elements of electric current, along the line joining them. According to Ampère's Law, any two such elements interact with a force directed along the line joining them and proportional to the product of their current intensities multiplied by a function of their directions and divided by their distance squared" (ibid). "Ampère also provided a physical understanding of the electromagnetic relationship, theorizing the existence of an "electrodynamic molecule" (the forerunner of the idea of the electron) that served as the component element of both electricity and magnetism. Using this physical explanation of electromagnetic motion, Ampère developed a physical account of electromagnetic phenomena that was both empirically demonstrable and mathematically predictive" (Wikipedia). In 1827 Ampère published the first edition of this volume and has been known since as this field's founding father. "A religious man, Ampère believed that he had proven the existence of the soul and of God" (Pickover, The Physics Book, 172). CONDITION & DETAILS: Paris: A. Hermann. Lancaster: American Institute of Physics. 4to (11 x 7.5 inches). [6], 164 pages, [2 large 20 inch fold-out plates], 2. Complete deluxe edition. Beautifully rebound in half-calf over marbled paper boards, gilt-ruled at the edge of the boards and at the spine. Black morocco spine label, gilt-lettered. New endpapers. Very slight toning at the edges of the first few pages; otherwise bright and very clean throughout. Very good condition.

Bowles's Moral Pictures, or Poor Richard Illustrated

1800. FRANKLIN, Benjamin. Bowles's Moral Pictures, or Poor Richard Illustrated. Engraved broadsheet, illustrated with 24 engraved emblems within oval frames by Robert Dighton, plus a portrait of Benjamin Franklin. Folded, mounted in cloth covers with title gilt on front. Manchester: Bancks & Co., n.d. [ca. 1790]. |~||~||~||~||~| This rare illustrated broadside offers Franklin's Maxims from Poor Richard's Almanack. This sheet is possibly the earliest illustrated compilation of Franklin's aphorisms for sale. The illustrated broadside was produced under the skillful eye of English publisher of prints and maps Carington Bowles. The engravings are of high quality and offer revealing, detailed images of daily rural life in England at the end of the eighteenth century. Carington Bowles (1724-1793) represented the third generation of a family of printsellers in business since the late 1600s. He worked with his father John Bowles (1701-1779) until 1763 when he took over the firm vacated by his aging uncle, Thomas Bowles (1695-1767), which he lead for thirty years. At his death in 1793, Carington Bowles' business passed to his son under a partnership, Bowles & Carver. Robert Dighton (1751-1814) was a well-known painter of portraits and caricatures, as well as decorative subjects, who is regarded as one of the most talented social caricaturists of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. He entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1770, exhibiting miniature portraits and comic drawings. As an artist, he was first offered consistent employment by the publisher Carington Bowles. Many of his later works were issued anonymously and published by Bowles. Poor Richard's Almanack appeared yearly from 1732 to 1757 and was a best seller for a pamphlet published in the American colonies; print runs typically ran to 10,000 per year. It is chiefly remembered, quoted and reprinted today for the repository of common sense aphorisms and proverbs sprinkled throughout. This sheet of Bowles's Moral Pictures has been backed on silk, with some professional paper repairs to cracks along folds and to edges. Extremely rare. Ford, Franklin Bibliography, p. 69, no. 137.

One particularly amusing passage is a description of a whirling dervish ceremony, which she attributes to the use of the poppy: ?I believe it was under the influence of this last juice, that this Tartar group were moving at such a rate.? Another interesting letter deals with Jews in the Crimea. Despite the considerable amount of information presented in this volume, there is very little of the intimacy that might be expected in letters from wife to husband. This probably had to do with Mr. Guthrie?s editorial prerogative - it has been suggested that he added much of the historical material presented (See Papmehl). Maria Guthrie (d. 1800) was a French woman, formerly the Countess Marie de Romont, ?acting Directress of the Imperial [Smolny] Convent for the education of the female nobility of Russia.? She married in 1871, and had two daughters. Matthew Guthrie (1743 - 1807) was a Scottish medical doctor who spent a significant amount of time in Russia under the employment of the Russian government. He rose to the rank of Chief Medical Officer to the Army Corps of Noble Cadets and published a number of medical articles, though his passion seems to have been Russian Antiquities - he published a work on the subject in 1795 (Dissertation sur les antiquités de Russie).

Logik. Ein Handbuch zu Vorlesungen (Logic: A Handbook of Lectures)

Friedrich Nicolovius, Konigsberg 1800 - KANT, Immanuel. Logik. Ein Handbuch zu Vorlesungen (Logic: A Handbook of Lectures), Friedrich Nicolovius, Konigsberg, 1800. TP + [v]-xxiv + [1]-232, Octavo. First Edition, First Printing (Warda 206).Kant never produced a ‘book’ on logic, but taught and lectured on logic often during his years as a professor teaching an introductory philosophy class. The publication of Logik in 1800 was, in fact, a fully authorized collection of Kant's lectures on logic from that introductory course. The collection was compiled from his manuscripts and notes and edited by his students, primarily graduate student, Gottlob Jaesche. While this is not necessarily representative of Kant’s major ideas, it does give the reader a glimpse into the science of logic as Kant understood it, a logic that serves as the architecture for his main works. It also contains elements not directly addressed in his major Critiques. For example, in Logik, Kant directly addresses the distinction between general and transcendental logic, and explains the differences between analysis and synthesis with respect to concepts, judgments, and methods. Therefore, Logik gives the reader a look at some of Kant’s lectures on philosophy, an understanding of the science of logic, and a direct explanation of some of the most important concepts that serve as central to his major critiques.CONDITION: Contemporary marbled boards with cloth spine, titled in gilt. In a letter to Robert Southey, written as early as 1794, Coleridge wrote "My God! Southey! Who is this Schiller? This convulser of the heart?

COMMUNICATIONS CONCERNING THE AGRICULTURE AND COMMERCE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA: BEING AN AUXILIARY TO A REPORT MADE BY WILLIAM STRICKLAND... [bound with:] COMMUNICATIONS CONCERNING THE AGRICULTURE AND COMMERCE OF AMERICA: CONTAINING OBSERVATIONS ON THE COMMERCE OF SPAIN WITH HER AMERICAN COLONIES IN TIME OF WAR. [bound with:] AUXILIARY REMARKS ON AN ESSAY ON THE 'COMPARATIVE ADVANTAGES OF OXEN FOR TILLAGE IN COMPETITION WITH HORSES.'

London. 1800, 1800, 1801.. xii,153,[2],[4]; viii,120; [2],53,[1]pp. plus engraved frontispiece to the first work showing the "Hemp Mill at Stover's Town Virginia." Antique half calf and marbled boards. Very clean, near fine. A sammelband of three rare works by William Tatham, English geographer and engineer who left Cumberland for Virginia to seek his fortune in 1769. In 1776, he moved to the Watauga settlement in the Tennessee country and fought on the American side in the Revolutionary War until 1781. Later, he wrote a topographical study of Virginia, then returned to England to publish a number of works on agricultural and engineering subjects (including the three works here). In the first of these works, COMMUNICATIONS CONCERNING THE AGRICULTURE AND COMMERCE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA..., Tatham critiques Strickland by noting the "mistaken suspicion" that "everything written concerning America must be directed to stimulate emigration to that country." Tatham uses his extensive topographical knowledge and many years of living and working in America to provide a detailed and wide-ranging report on the state of American agriculture. The work includes sections on "the moral Evil of Slavery," the American cultivation of clover seed, tobacco, wheat, hemp, and the best use of horses and cattle. It concludes with a two- page appendix titled "Mr. Jefferson's Opinion upon the Establishment of an American naval force." This text is taken from Jefferson's NOTES ON THE STATE OF VIRGINIA and begins with the rallying cry, "The sea is the field on which we should meet an European enemy." It continues with an assessment of how an improved Navy could be funded. Rare, with only six institutional copies recorded. The second work, COMMUNICATIONS CONCERNING THE AGRICULTURE AND COMMERCE OF AMERICA: CONTAINING OBSERVATIONS ON THE COMMERCE OF SPAIN WITH HER AMERICAN COLONIES IN TIME OF WAR, is an examination of American agricultural commerce with regard to Spain, "written by a Spanish gentleman in Philadelphia." Latham is credited as the editor on the titlepage, with both Howes and Sabin attributing authorship to Carlos Martinez de Yrujo y Tacon. Martizez de Yrujo was the Spanish minister to the United States from 1796 to 1807, and was a well- respected figure among the diplomatic corps in Philadelphia and Washington. His work here includes two papers on Louisiana, and one specifically devoted to Havana, Cuba. Rare. OCLC only records eight copies. An especially interesting feature of the second work is found in Tatham's "An Account of the Country of Ouachita. Transmitted from a Foreign Traveller at New Orleans, in 1795," found at pp.99-110. In this section, Tathamn records impressions of this "Foreign Traveller," as well as another account by a "French Emigrant," on lands west of the Mississippi River that we now know of as Arkansas and Texas. These accounts touch on the mysterious ancient inhabitants who once lived here, the abundance of food, including maize, rice, potatoes, pumpkins, and other foods that "come to great perfection here," the trees, the wildlife, the minerals, and the fish that swell the rivers. Of particular Texas interest is mention on pp. 105-106 of the Red River, and of the ease of buying cattle in the Ouachita area, because of its "proximity to Taxas [sic], a province of Mexico abounding with these kinds of cattle for want of purchasers." This is an extraordinarily early mention of Texas in the English language, and until this time seemingly unnoticed in the scholarship, even by Streeter. The third work, AUXILIARY REMARKS ON AN ESSAY ON THE "COMPARATIVE ADVANTAGES OF OXEN FOR TILLAGE IN COMPETITION WITH HORSES," compares the labor benefits of oxen and horses. Not in ESTC. Very rare, with only two copies in OCLC. SABIN 94407. HOWES M352, "aa." JCB III:4131. ESTC T53524, T53570. OCLC 166612674, 318814086, 38658648.
