THE PROSPECT BEFORE US. VOLUME I.

Richmond: Printed for the Author, and Sold by M. Jones, S. Pleasants, Jun. and J. Lyon, 1800. 184pp. Antique-style half calf and marbled boards. Contemporary ink signature on titlepage. Minor foxing and toning. Very good. The passionate and extraordinarily rare anti-Federalist screed from the "scandalmonger" himself, James T. Callender, suppressed by the Federalists who convicted him for sedition for writing it. Callender was a notorious journalist and political pamphleteer during the Federal period, issuing savage attacks on George Washington, John Adams, Alexander Hamilton, and others. The present work was partially financed by Vice President Thomas Jefferson who was, along with James Madison, actively working against the president and his Federalist cohorts. Jefferson had been particularly impressed with Callender's attack on Hamilton, and wanted a similar work scrutinizing the Adams administration, especially as he was running against the incumbent president at the time. The pamphlet is an attack on the political corruption within the Federalist party and inside the Adams administration, with Callender focusing his ire on the president himself. He labels the president a "hoary headed incendiary," "a man who has deserted and reversed all principles," and describes the Adams administration as "one continued tempest of malignant passions. As President, he has never opened his lips, or lifted his pen without threatening and scolding; the grand object of his administration has been to exasperate the rage of contending parties to calumniate and destroy every man who differs from his opinions...." As a result of this pamphlet, Adams' and Hamilton's Federalist party used the new Sedition Act to prosecute Callender at the height of the 1800 election campaign, citing twenty passages from THE PROSPECT BEFORE US in the indictment (though never naming the book itself). After a frustrating and politically-charged trial stacked clearly against the defendant, presided over by Federalist judge Samuel Chase, who frequently interrupted the defense lawyers, and consisting of an all-Federalist jury, Callender was found guilty. He was fined $200 and sentenced to nine months in prison. Callender was the last and most famous target of the Sedition Act, and the only defendant prosecuted under the law in a southern state. After Jefferson's election the new President pardoned Callender, but refused the writer's request to receive a lucrative postmaster's appointment. Callender then switched sides, revenging himself by spilling the details of Jefferson and his mulatto mistress Sally Hemings. In 1803, while drunk, he drowned in a shallow sidewater of the James River. The shadowy circumstances of his death, combined with the many powerful enemies he had made, led to numerous Vince Foster-like conspiracy theories. This copy of THE PROSPECT BEFORE US bears the ownership signature of Founding Father Theodorus Bailey, who represented New York in both the House and Senate between 1793 and 1804. Bailey also served in the New York Militia during the Revolution and attained the rank of brigadier general in the New York State Militia, where he served from 1786 until 1805. Intriguingly, Bailey was an anti-Federalist and member of Jefferson's Democratic- Republican Party. As such, he would have had a particular interest in the subject matter of this book. The first part of THE PROSPECT BEFORE US was popular and welcome in Virginia at the time of publication, but roundly criticized and suppressed in Philadelphia and elsewhere. As a result, the work is extremely rare, and hardly ever encountered outside institutions. James Morton Smith, "Sedition in the Old Dominion: James T. Callender and THE PROSPECT BEFORE US." THE JOURNAL OF SOUTHERN HISTORY. Vol. 20, No. 2 (May 1954), pp.157-182. HOWES C72. EVANS 37083. SHAW & SHOEMAKER 271. BRINLEY 4790. William Safire's novel SCANDALMONGER, (2000) is a lively fictional treatment of Callender's career and a must-read for any enthusiast of the Federal era.

        [Ten portraits of horses]

Rotterdam, ca. 1800. Ten original engravings (ca. 15.0 x 12.0 cm), all but one mounted on contemporary paper (ca. 27.0 x 21.5 cm).l This is a collection of ten drawings made by the Dutch artist Gerrit Malleyn (1753-1816) - who specialized in drawing horses - and engraved by the Dutch artist, Johannes Adriaanz Bemme (1775-1841). Bemme was renowned for his horse engravings and engraved nearly all the horses in J. F. Teupken's "Beschrijving hoedanig de Koninklijke Nederlandsche troepen en alle in militaire betrekking staande personen gekleed, geëquipeerd en gewapend zijn" ("Description of the Royal Dutch troops and all military related people and their clothes, equipment and arms" see Landwehr, 455). The illustrations are quite lively and show horses in different moods. Impressions strong, paper quality good. A nice collection. Complete suites, with 12 engravings, are very rare but single engravings are quite uncommon too.

Rélation du Voyage à la Recherche de La Pérouse, fait par ordre de l'Assemblée Constituante, pendant les années 1791, 1792, et pendant la 1ère et la 2de année de la République Françoise

H.J. Jansen, Paris 1800 - Two volumes, large quarto, with folio atlas containing 44 engraved plates and maps; an excellent uniform set, the text completely untrimmed, in original buff boards. First edition of the narrative by the naturalist on the d'Entrecasteaux expedition, in which Australia was fully circumnavigated, if sometimes at a distance, and the islands surrounding investigated for traces of La Pérouse. Labillardière, botanist on the voyage, remains an important figure in early Australian science as the author of the first extensive monograph on Australian botany. The voyage spent many months on the coasts of Western Australia, just a year after Vancouver's visit, and made two long visits to Tasmania, charting, botanising and exploring the coasts. The visits are remembered in numerous place names, most notably Recherche Archipelago and Recherche Bay, named for the expedition's ship. Labillardière's account is one of very few eighteenth-century accounts of Australian exploration, and the only major French account of the continent in the early settlement period to be published in the same century. The important narrative based on the commander d'Entrecasteaux's papers, did not appear until 1808.The work is particularly interesting for its descriptions (and illustrations) of Tasmania, Tonga, New Caledonia, and New Guinea, and the atlas contains outstanding views of these areas by the official artist Piron. Included is the famous engraving of the black swan. the first large depiction of the exotic Australian bird. Fourteen botanical plates, all by or produced under the direction of Redouté, the most famous of all botanical artists, include two of Eucalypts and two of Banksias. It was a notable voyage in itself, although also beset by tragedy: the commander, d'Entrecasteaux, died of a 'dreadful cholic' shortly before the expedition collapsed in Batavia. There they learned of the French Revolution, and D'Auribeau, then commander, and the principal officers being monarchists, put themselves under Dutch protection, arrested the remainder of the officers, including Labillardière the naturalist, and Piron the artist, and disposed of the ships. D'Auribeau in turn died, and was succeeded by Rossel, who managed to return to Europe and later edited the manuscripts for the official account. The papers and natural history specimens were seized en route and carried to England, but in 1796, with the urging of Sir Joseph Banks, were returned to France under a flag of truce.Because Labillardière was a Republican, his account appeared first, while that of d'Entrecasteaux had to wait until the restoration of the monarchy. The atlas appeared a year earlier than the text. In good condition in original bindings. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Historical Account of the Substances which have been used to Describe Events and to Convey Ideas from the Earliest Date to the Invention of Paper. Printed on the First Useful Paper manufactured soley from Straw

91 pp. Small folio, orig. edition binding of straight-grained blue morocco (joints a little rubbed), spine stamped in blind. [London]: T. Burton, 1800. First edition, and a very fine copy in the original edition binding of blue straight-grained morocco, of this classic work on the search for new materials to manufacture paper. This copy has been signed by Koops at the bottom of the dedication leaf. At the same time as the first papermaking machines, invented in France, were being built in England, Koops was experimenting with the use of straw and wood for papermaking in Bermondsey. He succeeded in the first, large-scale, commercial production of paper made from straw and wood. Koops was given permission by the King to be the only distributor of paper made from alternative paper sources in the hope that he could help solve England's paper crisis; however, the times were not right for this early attempt at recycling and Koops went bankrupt. The book describes ancient equivalents of paper, methods that had been tried over the ages to find paper which would withstand the attack of insects, data on French exports of paper into England, and commentary on Koops' attempts to produce paper from sources other than rags. "Not much is known of Koops, but his work as a experimenter with new papermaking materials at the dawn of the Industrial Revolution is justly famous. He writes of the work of Schäffer, Guettard, de Lisle, Seba, and Senger in the search for new materials, and spends much time discussing the use of conferva for papermaking fibers although emphasizing the availability of straw."-Schlosser, An Exhibition of Books on Papermaking, 21. Fine copy. The two preliminary and two terminal endpapers are also made from wood. With the signature in pencil of Sir Francis Freeling, secretary of the Post Office and an original member of the Roxburghe Club. Armorial bookplate of Joseph Neeld (1754-1828), and the modern bookplate of A.R.A. Hobson. ? Hunter, The Literature of Papermaking, pp. 47-48.

RICHARDSON'S THEATRE...WHEN WILL BE PERFORMED A NEW ASIATIC MELO DRAME, CALLED THE AFRICANS OR, THE DESOLATE ISLAND...[caption title]

London: Hughes, 1800. Broadside, 10 x 7 inches. Printed on blue tinted paper, mounted onto a large later sheet. Near fine. Expertly matted, and protected with mylar sheet. An engaging broadside for a theatre performance centered around a drama called "The Africans." The scenery for the play is taken from the work of the intrepid British explorer, Mungo Park, and features views of the African coast and interior, "Omai's Cave," and warrior huts. The characters include Omai (an African Chief, evidently confusing him with the famed Omai from the South Seas), warriors named Wahedooa, Tongataboo, Tiaiarboo, and Kiahiargo, and a Princess named Terapo. The bill promises an evening in which "the retributive hand of Providence will manifest its abhorrence of Vice; and Virtue and Constancy eventually triumphant." A pantomime called "Harlequin Traveller; or a Trip Round the World" would also be performed, the whole evening culminating with a grand panoramic view of the Rock of Gibraltar.

Voyage in search of La Pérouse, performed by order of the Constituent Assembly, during the years 1791, 1792, 1973, and 1794

London: John Stockdale, 1800. Joints of the binding cracked but quite firm.. Quarto, with 45 plates and a folding map; occasional light spotting; a very attractive copy, bound without the final advertisement leaf in old half polished calf; top edge gilt, others untrimmed. A fine, large copy with wide margins of the best and most complete English edition, published as a quarto; smaller octavo editions appeared in the same year. The introduction to this English edition raises the question 'Whether, as has hitherto generally happened, the advantages of civilisation may not, in the progress of events, be transferred from the Europeans, who have but too little prized them, to those remote countries which they have been so diligently exploring? If so, the period may arrive, when New Zealand may produce her Lockes, and Newtons, her Montesquieus; and when great nations in the immense region of New Holland, may send their navigators, philosophers, and antiquaries, to contemplate the ruins of ancient London, and Paris, and to trace the languid remains of the arts and sciences in this quarter of the globe. Who can tell, whether the rudiments of some great empire may not already exist at Botany Bay?'

        Liber Chronicarum

More than 1800 woodcuts in the text including a Ptolemaic world map, & one folding woodcut map of northern & central Europe. CCCXXXVIII leaves, 25 unnumbered leaves (without the two blanks). Small folio (300 x 204 mm.), fine smooth 18th-cent. vellum over boards (title with a few very light stains & a very faint old stamp, first & final two leaves with tiny marginal wormholes). Augsburg: J. Schoensperger, 1 Feb. 1497. A very lovely copy, complete with a fine example of the often-missing folding map of northern and central Europe, of the first edition of the "Small Schedel," a reduced version of the large folio of 1493, entirely reset and with the famous illustrations re-cut. Originally published by Anton Koberger in Nuremberg in 1493, the Chronicle is a biblical account of the Creation of the World, ending with the Last Judgement. The many city views, some imaginary, include those of Augsburg, Nuremberg, Cologne, Mainz, Wurzburg, Munich, Strasbourg, Ulm, Prague, Vienna, Milan, Genoa, Rome, Pisa, Florence, Venice, Paris, Lyon, Bratislava, Cracow, Athens, Constantinople, Cairo, Damascus, and Jerusalem. Also included is a reduced Ptolemaic world map. The hundreds of portraits illustrate biblical figures, kings and queens, popes, philosophers, poets, and other figures of historical interest. Interspersed are passages on disastrous events and portents, monsters and other curiosities. Originally the work of the famous woodcutters Michael Wolgemut, teacher of Dürer, and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff, Schoensperger had the illustrations re-cut by some of his best craftsmen to fit the new format. Copies of the "small Schedel" are considerably rarer than the original, large folio, editions. All editions are, however, very rarely found in original, unsophisticated state, with most copies that come onto the market defective, and with leaves missing or supplied. The copy offered here is an unusually well-preserved and "pure" example. A few other minor flaws but a very fine crisp copy. Final leaf backed at the time of rebinding in the 18th century (the verso of the final leaf is blank). Preserved in a box. ? Goff S-308. Klebs 889.2.

        Treatise Concerning Heaven And Hell

1800 - SWEDENBORG, Emanuel. A Treatise Concerning Heaven And Hell, And of the Wonderful Things Therein, as Heard and Seen, by the Honourable and Learned Emanuel Swedenborg". Translated from the Original Latin. Chester: Printed by C.W. Leadbeater, 1800. Octavo, contemporary cloth boards, paper spine label, uncut. $4500.Fourth edition in English of Swedenborg's important treatise on Heaven and Hell (1778), an especially memorable association copy belonging to English poet laureate Robert Southey, signed and dated 1805 on the title page by him, this copy with the distinctive flowered cloth covers that were created by Southey's devoted daughters. This exceptionally scarce association copy of Emanel Swedenborg's Treatise concerning Heaven and Hell (1778) belonged to English poet laureate Robert Southey, and contains with his signature and date of 1805 on the title page. Swedenborg, a scientist, mystic, philosopher and theologian, wrote this Treatise based on visions during which he claimed to have actually visited heaven and hell. His mystical experiences inspired and influenced a number of important writers, including Blake, whom Southey read and whose ideas he considered extreme. Southey, who with Wordsworth and Coleridge made up the enormously influential Lake Poets, was Poet Laureate from 1813 until his death in 1843, when he was succeeded by Wordsworth. Southey's "style has long been regarded as masterly in its ease and clarity" (Kuiper, 1055). His daughters had a hobby of covering his books in flowered chintz; indeed, the boards of Southey's copy of this work are covered in flowered cloth. Southey referred to the books with such covers as his "Cottonian Library," after the library put together by Sir Robert Bruce Cotton in the 17th century, which formed the basis of the British Museum. Armorial bookplate. Pencilled notations on provenance to front pastedown.Text generally fresh with light scattered foxing; mild soiling, some loss to spine of cloth covers. A highly desirable, extremely good copy with an important literary provenance. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

A graduate of Rhode Island College (now Brown University), Foster was an aspiring classicist and sprinkled his letters and speeches with allusions to Greek and Latin writers. His retirement from public life in 1803 was caused primarily by his decision to leave the Federalist Party in 1800, as the Federalists remained the dominant party in New England for the next fifteen years. He later served on the Board of Trustees at Rhode Island College and contributed to the early organization of both the Rhode Island Historical Society and Massachusetts Historical Society.

Letters on the corn-trade; giving an account of the causes of the first scarcity, in 1795. Being a prefatory to an appeal to the county of Lancaster, On the Scarcity in 1800

Liverpool: Printed by Francis Chalmer, [1800]. [2], 46pp. With a half-title. Largely unopened in recent calf backed plain paper boards, contrasting red morocco lettering-pieces, gilt. Minor wear to extremities, some light browning to boards. Half-title laid-down due to significant marginal loss, with ink library shelf-marks to head, occasional embossed stamps of New Haven Colony Historical Society, very small marginal hole to E4, sporadic foxing throughout. Presentation copy inscribed in ink to head of half-title; 'from the author to Mr. Gregson'. A privately printed collection of letters on the corn trade, written in 1797, by Liverpool based corn-merchant Francis Chalmer addressed to Whig Member of Parliament to Lancaster Colonel Thomas Stanley (1749-1816). In 1796 Chalmer had been deputed to represent those that had suffered during the grain shortages of 1795 due to the importation of foreign corn; indeed he had printed a pamphlet entitled Grounds of the claim of the merchants of England and Scotland, for compensation of their severe losses by importation of Foreign corn: in the beginning of the year 1796 - a time of great scarcity (London, 1798). The severity of the shortages at that time had led to rioting, and in 1800 the threat of a repetition of that violence seemed imminent given the continued rise in corn prices. Chalmer desires, that with the publication of these letters, that the public and their political representatives will be engendered to act and not merely relive the mistakes of the past. However it not until 1815 were the Corn Laws introduced in order to control import prices and better protect British agriculture. The author claims in the preface that a quarto edition, of which we can find no record, had been printed in 1798, with a copy gifted to Stanley These present Letters are not to be confused with Chalmers' An Appeal to the County of Lancashire, also printed in 1800. This apparent separate publication is far rarer, with OCLC recording only three copies (NLA, Senate House, Yale). . 8vo.
