I partly cracked towards head). Upper blank corner of half-title in vol. Ia torn. A few pages little browned, occasional minor spotting, light dampstaining to top blank margin of a few gatherings, otherwise quite crisp and clean. A very fine set, mostly in original condition, rarely found as complete as here with all the supplements present. ----Dibner, Heralds of Science 14; Grolier/Horblit 63; PMM 252; Sparrow, Milestones of Science 125; Norman 1277; Roberts-Trent, p.197. LAPLACE'S FUNDAMENTAL WORK ON CELESTIAL MECHANICS. FIRST EDITIONS OF ALL PARTS, with the first two volumes Ia and IIa in FIRST ISSUE and bound around 1800 in fine calf. Volumes III to V together with the 2nd edition of volumes Ib and IIb form a uniform set as issued. Published over a period of 27 years, Laplace's monumental work codified and developed the theories and achievements of Newton, Euler, d'Alembert and his contemporary Lagrange. In the tradition of Newton's Principia, Laplace "applied his analytical mathematical theories to celestial bodies and concluded that the apparent changes in the motion of planets and their satellites are changes of long periods, and that the solar system is in all probability very stable" (Dibner 14). Newton remained uncertain with respect to the continuity of our solar system. In this work, Laplace also offered explanations unsolved by his predecessors and contemporaries. He "offered a brilliant explanation of the secular inequalities of the mean motion of the moon about the earth - a problem which Euler and Lagrange had failed to solve. He proved that these irregularities are connected with certain solar actions and changes in the orbit of the earth. He also investigated the theory of the tides and calculated from them the mass of the moon" (PMM 252). The first four volumes of the work appeared from 1799 through 1805, and contain the laws of mechanics for their application to the motions and figures of the heavenly bodies. The final parts of the fourth volume and the entire fifth volume really constitute a separate work and contain important material on physics not already included in the original sequence. Our set contains the first state title-pages in the first two volumes Ia and IIa, with French Republican dates only and without the added Berlin imprint (printed for European distribution). Only few sets have survived in its original wrappers. Ou set can best be compared with the Norman set which has the firt 4 volumes in original wrap. Very Good.

        Si sabrà mas el discipulo?

1799. Acquatinta, acquaforte e puntasecca, mm 212x150, eseguita su foglio di carta vergata di mm 322x220. Impressione molto bella, nitida e contrastata, ampi margini. Bibliografia: Harris 72.

        Italian decorated Ketubah.

Ancona Italy 1799 - Ink, gouache and liquid gold on vellum, (69 x 45 cm). Framed and glazed. A very attractive example of a traditional Jewish marriage contract, fully manuscript and richly decorated with fine colours and liquid gold. The present wedding was celebrated on Friday, the 14th of the month of Nissan, year 5559 of the Jewish calendar (1799), in Ancona, Italy, between Cohen Gershon son of the late Cohen Elhanan Pirugia, and Yudita Vittoria, daughter of Isaac Joseph Tirani. Ancona is known to be one of the most prolific centres of Ketubah decoration in Italy. Jews started settling there around the end of the 10th century and by the mid 14th century they had become prosperous as an organised community, involved in the lending and banking businesses. After the city had fallen into the Papal state in 1429, Pope Martin V tried to develop Ancona as an Italian centre of commerce. In order to achieve that goal, the Jews were given permission to open banks and lend money with interest, which attracted immigrants from Germany, Spain, Sicily and Portugal. By 1550 the Jewish population of Ancona numbered about 2,700 individuals. Irrespective of the radically negative changes in the Vatican's approach towards the Ancona Jews from 1555, the Jewish population of the province at the time this Ketubah was signed still amounted to 2,500 individuals. The Ketubah is a nuptial agreement signed by the groom and presented to the bride as part of the traditional Jewish wedding ceremony. It formalises the duties and responsibilities of the groom towards the bride, including some basic obligations such as sustenance (food and clothing), marital relations and compensation in the event of divorce. The Ketubah is read aloud during the wedding ceremony, signed by two witnesses and usually handed to the mother of the bride for safekeeping. Ketubot are often hung in the home of the couple, as a reminder of their vows and mutual marital responsibilities. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

AN AUTHENTIC ACCOUNT OF AN EMBASSY FROM THE KING OF GREAT BRITAIN TO THE EMPEROR

      - Philadelphia 1799, Campbell.Full old calf, 2 vols. in 1, 297 +267p. +24p appendix, 8 copper engravings, 13 x 22 cm., with brown stain from beginning p. eventually getting lighter to page 90, else clean, spine bit split, corners rubbed, solid. THE OFFICIAL RECORD: The official account of Earl McCartney's informative but unsuccessful mission to establish formal diplomatic and commercial relations with China. Staunton accompanied the Embassy as Secretary & compiled his book chiefly from the papers of the Ambassador & his fellow envoys. A fascinating true history of the expedition, useful primary source. * IMPORTANT NOTE ! Only the FIRST EDITION of this work contains the atlas folio. Other different or later editions are as described. Beautiful views of Cochin-China, Macao, Yang-Tzw river life, many other views of China. Highly collectable title, documenting the first English Embassy to China. A most handsome addition to any great collection. This work is seldom found in its complete state, with the atlas of maps & superb copper engraved plates, with nice frontis engravings in volumes 1 & 2 of McCartney and Tchien Lung, the Great Emperor of China. * THE ATLAS OR FOLIO: Not issued until 1798: The atlas was copper etched, it contains a folded general chart of the track followed by the two ships around the world, along with 43 other fine charts, maps, plans and marvelous illustrations, with superb views recorded for posterity. * THE PLATES: The lively and large plates illustrate coastal views, birds of an unusual character, natives and other images of significance. Expertly drawn and engraved. * By and large, the best single English language item done on China in the 18th century ! George Staunton [1737-1801] was a British diplomat, in 1774 Dr. Samuel Johnson met Staunton and they became life-long friends. Although the official mission to China failed, a wealth of precious information was collected and published in this first comprehensive official account. During this period of time, Great Britain was anxious to establish formal diplomatic relations with China and open usual trade relations. The unwilling Chinese resisted all Western foreign intervention in China. In the end the gifts and arguments were rejected. * THE FOLIO: The folio [when present] contains [102p.], 5 large folding maps, 50 finely engraved plates, large format, ca. 58 x 43 cm., fresh, clean copy, no foxing. * **** BIBLIOGRAPHY: E. Cox: A REFERENCE GULIDE TO THE LITERATURE OF TRAVEL, P.334-345. * Lust 545. * H. H. Cordier: SINICA 2381-82. * Hill: Pacific Voyages, p280-281, 1628, p.250. * Maggs: Catalog no. 521:"Apart from its Chinese importance, is of considerable interest owing to the various places visited en route, including Madeira, Teneriff, Rio de Janero, St. Helena, Tristan D'Acuna, Amsterdam Island, Java, Sumatra, Cochin-China, etc." * Cox I, p.334: "A most interesting account of Chinese manners & customs at the close of the 18th century." *

Humbly dedicated to the Prime Minister of England, in behalf of the community at large, more or less interested therein: together with hints for the consideration of persons having landed property, and dealers in cattle.

An uncommon and particularly interesting study of everyday prices by a market trader/butcher of long standing. While most studies of inflation/prices focus on corn prices (for obvious reasons), James Mathews draws on his much wider experience where 'High Street' prices for every day purchases are real challenges for the poor.         Portrait of Thomas John Dibdin, playwright, actor and song writer

(London:) Drawn, etch'd & pub.by Dighton, Charing Cross, April, 1799, 1799. The earliest recorded likeness of Thomas John Dibdin. One crease; in fine condition. Rare.. Hand-colored etching, 20.5 x 16.5 cm, with the caption "Sans Souci, Jun." With the portrait is the manuscript note: "This Portrait of myself / taken in the palmy days of white neckcloths and frills / when I was, as you see, rather younger than at present, is presented / by Thomas Dibdin April 28, 1841." Around the image of Dibdin are depictions of his plays and songs. A fine portrait of the actor and writer, Thomas John Dibdin (1771-1841), who like the other famous thespian Dibdins, was involved in the English theater from an early age. Thomas John was one of three illegitimate children of Charles Dibdin and actress Harriet Pitt, and in his early years on stage he used the name "T. Merchant" and his writings were published anonymously, a fact that the artist Dighton makes a playful reference to in giving the subject of his portrait the name "Sans Souci, Jun." Charles Dibdin was the owner of the San Souci Theater in London. See the DND for both Thomas John and Charles Dibdin.

        Vol.I.

Chichester, J. Seagrave, [1799]. 8vo., viii + 248pp., a little very light foxing and marking, uncut in contemporary blue boards, expertly rebacked, boards a little dust-soiled, but a very good copy. First edition (all published). Will Whimsical's Miscellany> is an anonymous literary 'hodge-podge' [The New Annual Register>], containing a number of entertaining pieces. Dedicated to 'Admiral Lord Nelson', pieces include Jupiter's Lottery, A Drinking song, The Downfall of Dido> and Lines written upon being first urged to put some work to press.> However, most appealing are: Desultory thoughts and hints> providing pithy comment on, amongst other things, cock-fighting, novel-reading ('debauches the mind, as much as rich drams do the palate: after 'Parfair-Amour' everything else tastes insipid') [p.54], Lawyers, Whig Club Pensioners and Booksellers>: 'Some of the high-priced London 'Booksellers' and their authors, complain of the 'Trade' at Edinburgh and Dublin, for publishing such cheap Editions: but, if they themselves demand five shillings for eighteen penny worth of Letter-Press, is it to be wondered at that the Scotch and Irish, who are content with more moderate profits, should have more custom?' [p.227]. We have been unable to identify the author of the work, who notes in his preface 'I purpose to take up at hap-hazard what scribble I have by me, and intermixing it occasionally with new, to publish volume after volume, until I have exhausted my literary stores, or the reader's patience' [p. v]. The fact that only one volume ever appeared would seem to indicate the latter.

Arthur Mervyn; or, Memoirs of the Year 1793 By the Author of Wieland; and Ormond, or the Secret Witness

Philadelphia: Printed and Published by H. Maxwell, 1799. First Edition. Hardcover. vi (but actually iv), 224pp. Modern red half morocco over marbled boards, spine with raised bands, decorated in gold and blind and lettered in gold. The endpapers were replaced but the original front free endpaper and the original bookstore typographic label (Sold by Campbell, Conrad & Co. Price -- Cents [Baltimore]) were preserved. The front endpaper bears three previous owners' names: one stamped and two handwritten (one of them dated 1801). With the misspelled name on page 108. This was the first part of a Gothic romance by the first US professional writer (the second part was published in 1800). "CBB [Charles Brockden Brown] is perhaps of more importance for his transmutation of the US wilderness, in a novel like Arthur Mervyn (1798-9), into a hallucinated labyrinth-like landscape; and for his extremely early use of a city like Philadelphia, in the same novel, in passages that convey a sense of genuine urban fantasy. His influence on 19th century writers like Nathaniel Hawthorne and Edgar Allan Poe was very considerable." The Encyclopedia of Fantasy, eds. Clute and Grant, 1997, p. 143. Text block is age-toned, scattered foxing throughout, short corner tear to one of the leaves (not affecting text). A very good+ copy. BAL 1498. Wright I.418. ; Octavo.

The British Mercury; or Historical and Critical Views of the Events of the Present Times. Volumes 2, 3, and 4 The 2nd Edition, Corrected

London: T. Cadell Jun. and W. Davies. Good with no dust jacket. 1799-1800. Second Edition. Hardcover. 517 pp, 512 [9] pp, 500 pp. This is a three volume set (of 5), Volumes 2, 3 and 4, in good antiquarian condition. In what appears to be the original very attractive tree calf full leather bindings with 5 raised bands on the spine, floriated gilt compartments as well as red and black morocco labels. Moderate wear to the bindings, joints and corners, some rubbing, one red label has a chip and a crack. Interiors have the signature of a father, then later the signature of the son (the family were descendants of Joan of Beaufort and John of Gaunt). Some minor foxing, spotting and wear to the interiors, but in general sound and clean. The English edition is very scarce in commerce - we could find no record of any other copies for sale or at auction - and relatively scarce in holdings. Most libraries have only the digital resource, not the actual books (Worldcat's recordkeeping on this is abysmal). A highly sought after - and scarce! - English language edition of the periodical from renowned French journalist and the 'spokesman' for the refugees of the French Revolution, Jacques Mallet du Pan. Contains brilliant analyses on the rise of Bonaparte and the Republican wars. Mallet du Pan defends the principles of a constitutional monarchy for all of Europe, taking inspiration from the British model. <p> Du Pan (1749-10 May 1800) was a French journalist, who took up the Royalist cause during the French Revolution. He was sent on a mission (1791-1792) byLouis XVI to Frankfort to try and secure the sympathy and intervention of the German princes. From Germany he travelled to Switzerland and from Switzerland to Brussels in the Royalist interest. He published a number of anti-revolutionary pamphlets, and a violent attack on Bonaparte and the Directory resulted in his being exiled in 1797 to Berne. In 1798 he came to London, where he founded the Mercure britannique. He died at Richmond, Surrey, on the 10th of May 1800, <p>The Mercury was initially published in French, but the English edition followed shortly. It was published with the support of subscribers and the books contain an advertisement advising subscribers that their dues for additional volumes should be sent in if they want to continue receiving the numbers. Du Pan also warns that the book is being published on the Continent but any such edition is pirated and not to be trusted, only the London editions should be purchased. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .

Volgarizzamento delle Vite de' Santi Padri secondo l'edizione di Firenze anno M.DCC.XXXI

Dionigi Ramanzini, 1799.
