[-] 1795, in the Discovery sloop of war, and the armed tender Chatham.

      - [Edited by John Vancouver]. London: printed for G.G. & J. Robinson and J. Edwards, 1798. 3 volumes (without the folio atlas), quarto. (11 3/8 x 9 1/4 inches). Half-titles, 3pp. errata at the end of vol.III. 1 engraved chart, 17 engraved plates. Later half morocco over marbled paper-covered boards, the spines gilt in compartments, the bands highlighted with gilt tooling. First edition of the text volumes to "One of the most important [voyages] ever made in the interests of geographical knowledge" (Hill). Vancouver was put in command of the expedition on the recommendation of his old commanding officer Alan Gardner. He had served earlier with both Admiral Rodney and on James Cook's second and third voyages, so was well equipped in terms of experience, in addition he was a first class navigator. The voyage was mounted as a `grand-scale expedition to reclaim Britain's rights, resulting from the Nootka Convention, at Nootka Sound, to thoroughly examine the coast south of 60º in order to find a possible passage to the Atlantic; and to learn what establishments had been founded by other powers. This voyage became one of the most important ever made in the interests of geographical knowledge. Vancouver sailed by way of the Cape of Good Hope to Australia, where he discovered King George's Sound and Cape Hood, then to New Zealand, Hawaii, and the northwest coast of America. In three seasons' work Vancouver surveyed the coast of California; visited San Francisco and San Diego . and other Spanish settlements in Alta California; settled the necessary formalities with the Spanish at Nootka; investigated the Strait of Juan de Fuca; discovered the Strait of Georgia; circumnavigated Vancouver Island; and disproved the existence of any passage between the Pacific and Hudson Bay.' La Perouse and his men obtained much important geographic data, as well as valuable information about the fur trade and the extent of Spanish settlements in California. Morning after the Storm. The husband's return... Le Matin devenu Calme. Le retour du mari

London: Published by William Redmore Bigg, March 1798. Colour printed mezzotint with additional hand-colouring. In good condition with the exception of some neat repairs to the plate mark. 17 3/4 x 23 3/4 inches. 18 x 23 5/8 inches. A lovely genre picture after the celebrated artist William Redmore Bigg which demonstrates familial love. In this excellent colour mezzotint, William Ward's fine engraving conveys the charm of Bigg's painting, and illustrates a sensibility and concern for familial warmth that has, to a definite degree, since been lost. Bigg's early Romantic narratives anticipate the "good" people in Dickens' novels for whom familial affection and constancy are ultimate values, unattainable to those in whom personal greed and envy predominates. Bigg has selected his moment well, The fisherman's family has endured hours of imagining and not knowing his fate, listening to the storm rage outside. Now he is safely home and all is well. The family gathers happily but quietly around him, his wife and eldest son help him remove his sea-drenched top- coat. Another son kneels at his feet with a boot-jack. Two more children warm some dry clothes over the fire. The youngest daughter watches the baby whilst her father's needs are dealt with. With skill and beauty Bigg's expresses this happy release from anxiety.

        Anthropologie in pragmatischer Hinsicht abgefasst

Königsberg bey Friedrich Nicolovius 1798. FIRST EDITION. 8vo, 196 x 113 mms., pp. xiv [xv - xvi blank],334, original boards, paper label on spine; first gathering mis-folded with final blank leaf preceding pp. xii - xiv, binding slightly soiled, some nicks to front joint, lower spine very slightly defective, corners slightly crushed. but a decent copy with the bookplate of Aloysius Guillelmus Denner on the Front paste-down end-paper and on the rector of the front free end-paper the Ex Libris of Sigmund Blau. Kant (1724 - 1804) published this, his last significant work, after a tussle with the ecclesiastical authorities about his writings on religion. The word "Anthropologie" does not have its modern meaning; instead Kant is writing about mental processes and psychology. His interest in classifying and defining mental disorders began with an examination of the effect of puberty on thought processes. Written 1796 to the eight-month-old Princess Charlotte but for unknown reasons first published three years later. 'O'Keeffe, who would eventually author nine collections of children's poems, four novels, and a retelling of the Bible, was the first writer to adapt dramatic forms along with the precepts of late eighteenth-century rational education (such as an emphasis on active learning and moral development) to children's poetry. The author demonstrates her pioneering work in two poetry genres: the children's dramatic monologue and the novel-in-verse.' [The Lion and the Unicorn April 2009].

Spine of vol. 2 torn. Old stamp on title recto cancelled; glue remnants of ex libris on inner cover. Poggendorff I, Sp. 212 (Bliss) u. 272 (Bradley). - Vol. I of Bradley¿s astronomical observations., published by Th. Hornsby, which contains the observations for the years 1750 to 1755. W/o the 2nd volume by Robertson with the observations for the years 1756 to 1762, but with its part 2, which contains the further observations by N. Bliss made between 1762 and 1764. - Bradley succeeded Halley as Astronomer Royal in 1742. On taking up the post he tested and repaired the Greenwich instruments and embarked on an intensive series of star observations. He found that the instruments had become inaccurate and managed to obtain a grant of £1000 from the admiralty to re-equip the observatory. 'As a result, the massive program of observations (at least 60,000) made at Greenwich from 1750 to 1762 attained a very high standard of accuracy, sufficient to make them useful to modern astronomers. The value of his star observations increases with time, for they provide a firm starting point for long-term investigations of stellar motions.' (A. F. O¿D. Alexander, DSB 2:388-389a). The preface by Thomas Hornsby gives an account of the new instruments and Bradley's observations, whose publication had been delayed by legal wrangles over the ownership of the Astronomer Royal's observations ¿ almost a re-run of the Flamsteed controversy. Various tables by several authors including Bradley and observations by his successor, Nathaniel Bliss. 1798 + 1805 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

In: Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London 88, Part I, 1798, 4to. pp. 80-102, 1 pl. ---- Dibner Heralds of Science 151, Sparrow Milestones of Science 189, Norman 2073 - Rumford discovered for the first time by experiment that heat is induced by friction, and he worked out a surprisingly accurate figure of coefficiency. This was the first blow to the current theory of heat as an "igneous fluid" called "caloric," and foreshadowed the conclusions summed up in Tyndall's phrase "heat as a mode of motion.".

Boards a bit edgeworn and marked, free endsheets wanting, advert leaf and errata bound after the full title, old tape shadows at gutters of boards and facing leaves, neat correction of numbering error of F4r, otherwise a very good copy. Cloth clamshell case. First edition of the only contemporary biographical notice of Mary Wollstonecraft. A week after her death due to complications attending the birth of Mary Godwin Shelley, Godwin set about editing her posthumous works and composing this memoir, regarded by some as his most readable book. "While the publication of her four volume posthumous works, won her adherents and converts, the more frank Memoirs created more shock than adulation. Boldly reversing the conventions of contemporary biography which normally sought to demonstrate how admirable qualities lead to admirable achievements, the book is a vindication of Mary Wollstonecraft, a vindication of the principles of the Vindication, and an open celebration of the characteristics which writers on women usually mentioned only to deplore. The Memoirs marks an important step in the development of the art of biography...it has more in common with the poets and novelists of the future than with the moral philosophers and classifiers of the past...The Memoirs shocked Godwin's contemporaries more than any of his other writings..." - St Clair, THE GODWINS AND THE SHELLEYS, pp. 181-185. A second edition was soon called for, and incorporated revisions intended to deflect some of the more violent criticisms. The portrait is often lacking from copies, and untrimmed, unpressed copies are uncommon. NCBEL II:1250.
