        Histoire Naturelle des Mineraux.

1798. Dordrecht, A. Blusse & Fils, 1798. 4to (282 x 225 mm). 5 volumes (bound in 2). pp. (4), 253; (4), 262; (4), 277; (4), 204; (4), (324), Contemporary calf, spines with 2 gilt lettered labels. The complete section on minerals of Buffon's famous 'Histoire Naturelle'. The first work 'to present the previously isolated and apparently disconnected facts of natural history in a generally intelligible form' (Encyclop. Brit.). The present copy is from the Buffon edition published in Dordrecht, the so-called 'l'Allemand' edition. It is the only 4to edition to rival the original French Imprimerie Royale edition (1749-1804) in 44 volumes. It does not contain the later published volumes by Lacepede on fishes and whales, as these were published after the date of above edition, it however contains numerous additions by l'Allemand which were included in the later French Buffon editions. "Buffon's work is of exceptional importance because of its diversity, richness, originality, and influence. Buffon was among the first to create an autonomous science, free of any theological influence. He emphasized the importance of natural history and the great length of geological time" (DSB). Landwehr, Studies in Dutch Books with coloured plates, 45; Piveteau 150; Sinkankas 1036..

(in 127 volumes - complete).

. Paris, Dufart, An VIII (1798) - XIII (1805). In 127 volumes. 8vo. Text and 1,122 (or 1,123) engraved plates, the sections on reptiles and molluscs finely hand-coloured, two portraits, eight maps, 21 folded tables and chart. Uniform full tree calf rich gilt spines, Gilt titles on two red morocco labels, marbled flyleaves, all sides marbled.* A remarkable complete set of one of the best illustrated and most scientifically important editions (because of the many new discoveries, including the descriptions of new species) of the famous "Comte de Buffon" natural history series in fine condition. It is especially important because of the herpetological section, by Daudin, and the Mollusca by Denys de Montfort. These two parts are in the rare hand-coloured version. The Daudin has 100 coloured or tinted engraved plates and the Denys de Montfort has 72 coloured or tinted engraved plates. But the birds (Oiseaux) and fish (Poissons) by Sonnini himself, the insects (Crustaces et Insectes) by Latreille, and the plants (Plantes) by Brisseau-Mirbel are also important contributions to this enormous project. The set is divided as follows. 1-3. Terre 1-3, 5 plates (plus one portrait); 4. Epoques 1, 3 plates; 5-7. Histoire des mineraux 1-3, 16 plates; 8-16. Mineraux 1-12, 3 plates; 17. Animaux 1, 7 plates; 18-21. Homme 1-4, 13 plates; 22-34 Quadrupedes 1-13, 231 plates (however, in volume 32 there two "plates" on one leaf. If both are counted separately, then the total number will be 1,123]; 35-36, Singes 1-2, 79 plates; 37-64. Oiseaux 1-28, 257 plates (I-CCLVI, XLIIIbis); 65-77. Poissons 1-13, 80 plates (LXXVII, I-IIIbis, plus one portrait); 78. Cetaces "14", 5 plates; 79-86. Reptiles 1-8, 100 plates; 87-92. Mollusques 1-6, 72 plates; 93-106. Insectes 1-14, 113 plates (I-CXIII, XCVIIbis); 107-124. Plantes 1-18, 151 plates (XVI used twice); 125-127. Tables. With a total of 1,122 plates, two portraits, eight maps, 21 folded tables and charts, and numerous tables in the text. The entire set is complete in a contemporary uniform binding, but one volume in the bird section (Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux) was bound recently in a very good match to the original, with a few labels renewed to match the original. Apart from some small defects and bumps to the bindings, a few volumes with some marginal worm traces (not effecting text) the set looks quite spectacular as a whole and is in a very good condition. None of the bibliographies dares to name the number of plates, except Nissen who lists 1,100 plates and six maps. This however is obviously incorrect and looking back in our records the number of plates varies from 1118 to 1143 plates, but it is not always clear in regard to the separately mentioned maps, portraits and/or folding tabels. If we count the portraits and large, folded maps/charts too, our total is 1,153. Some scuffing and rubbing to spines and boards, some volumes with small bumps and chips, three volumes (Mineraux section) with a few tiny wormholes to spine. Some heads and tails a little damaged. Some scattered light stains or soiling, but never in the image area of the plates. Overall a wonderful set in a very good condition in a very attractive binding and in a super complete state.

Paris: Chez Ferdinand Bastien, 1798. First edition illustrated, three volumes, octavos. In good condition, all edges gilt, tooling to the spine, expertly rebacked. All plates present. An attractive set.One of the great writers of world literature, François Rabelais is considered among the creators of modern European writing (Bahtin, 1984). His most renowned work is Gargantua and Pantagruel, and its satire and scatalogical humor of this time of censorship and increasing religious oppression have won Rabelais consideration as "....the greatest writer in the French language" (Le Clézio, 2008). The French novelist Honoré de Balzac was directly inspired by Rabelais to write his Les Cent Contes Drolatiques, and he quotes Rabelais lavishly in his La Comédie humaine (Brix, 2005).

Le Pied de Fanchète, ou le Soulier Couleur-de-Rose. Troisième édition.

La Haye, 1786 (i.e. 1798). - 2 tomes en 2 volumes in-12 à pagination continue. 171pp. + pp.173-383. Flora Bedfordiensis, Comprehending such Plants as Grow Wild in the County of Bedford, Arranged According to the System of Linnaeus, with Occasional Remarks

Printed by W. Smith, Bedford. 1798. First Edition, xii,351,[9]pp., presentation inscription from the author, 6 cont. hand-coloured engraved plates, cont. half, 2 contrasting gilt lettered morocco labels, paper shelf label to spine, a nice copy. This is the third English local flora, after Ray (Cambridge) and Sibthorp (Oxford), and the first in English. Although the BM (NH) copy has coloured plates, and Henry calls for them, this book is usually found with uncoloured plates, coloured copies an extreemly rare in commerce. "A work described by one authority as 'almost a model as a county flora'... Abbot's carefully prepared Flora bedfordiensis is written entirely in English, except for the first two words of the title and the Linnaean botanical names of the plants. It lists 1325 flowering plants and cryptogams. A brief description of each species is followed by the general place of growth, and in the case of some rare plants, the precise locality". (Henry).         Lettre autographe.

      S. l. n. d., [vers 1798].

A Voyage of Discovery to the North Pacific Ocean, and Round the World; in which the coast of North-West America has been carefully examined and accurately surveyed. principally with a view to ascertain the existence of any navigable communication between the North Pacific and North Atlantic Oceans; and performed in the years 1790. [-] 1795, in the Discovery sloop of war, and the armed tender Chatham.

      - [Edited by John Vancouver]. London: printed for G.G. & J. Robinson and J. Edwards, 1798. 3 volumes (without the folio atlas), quarto. (11 3/8 x 9 1/4 inches). Half-titles, 3pp. errata at the end of vol.III. 1 engraved chart, 17 engraved plates. Later half morocco over marbled paper-covered boards, the spines gilt in compartments, the bands highlighted with gilt tooling. First edition of the text volumes to "One of the most important [voyages] ever made in the interests of geographical knowledge" (Hill). Vancouver was put in command of the expedition on the recommendation of his old commanding officer Alan Gardner. He had served earlier with both Admiral Rodney and on James Cook's second and third voyages, so was well equipped in terms of experience, in addition he was a first class navigator. The voyage was mounted as a `grand-scale expedition to reclaim Britain's rights, resulting from the Nootka Convention, at Nootka Sound, to thoroughly examine the coast south of 60º in order to find a possible passage to the Atlantic; and to learn what establishments had been founded by other powers. This voyage became one of the most important ever made in the interests of geographical knowledge. Vancouver sailed by way of the Cape of Good Hope to Australia, where he discovered King George's Sound and Cape Hood, then to New Zealand, Hawaii, and the northwest coast of America. In three seasons' work Vancouver surveyed the coast of California; visited San Francisco and San Diego . and other Spanish settlements in Alta California; settled the necessary formalities with the Spanish at Nootka; investigated the Strait of Juan de Fuca; discovered the Strait of Georgia; circumnavigated Vancouver Island; and disproved the existence of any passage between the Pacific and Hudson Bay.' (Hill Pacific Voyages [2004] p.623).
