      Bonn N. Simrock [PN] 51 [ca. 1798-1800]. Oblong folio. Early quarter calf with marbled boards, diamond-shaped black leather title label with titling and decorative gilt stamping to upper. 1f. (title), [1] (cast list and contents), 2-183 pp. Engraved. Binding slightly worn, rubbed and bumped. Minor browning and offsetting; first and last leaves foxed; several margins repaired.. A very early edition published one year after the first. This issue carries a price of 21 Francs; an earlier issue carried a price of 9 Francs. First performed in Munich at the Residenztheater on January 29, 1781, set to a libretto by Giovanni Battista Varesco after Antoine Danchet's Idomenee; the opera was performed on only one other occasion during Mozart's lifetime. "Idomeneo is remarkable for its orchestration... [It] is also notable for its continuity... [It] is also the first Mozart opera in which the arrangement of tonalities seems deliberately calculated... Idomeneo is an opera sui generis, occupying a special place in the affections of its composer who went on to other achievements as vital and significant, but never returned to its dignified, heroic, yet thoroughly human world."         Letters and Correspondence, Public and Private of The Right Honourable Henry St John, Lord Visc. Bolingbroke;

      Paternoster-Row. London.: GG and J Robinson, 1798 4 vols complete, 1st ed, V+. In contemporary half calf with worn blue marbled boards, corners and edges bumped and worn. Spines, worn, titles in gilt, joints repaired, edges worn with some loss. Internally, text block edges sprinkled blue, small bookseller label to fpds, lacks half titles. Vol 1, armorial bookplate to fpd (John Wright, Kelvedon Hall), [5], (viii-xiv), [1] errata, [1], [1], 2-510 pp, watermarked 1798 to tp. Vol 2, bookplate to fpd, [2], [1], 2-628 pp. Vol 3, [2], [1], 2-611 pp. Vol 4, [2], [1], 2-646 pp. Some light offsetting, occasional light spotting and edge browning, hinges strengthened, pencil notes to eps and some marginal pencil highlighting. A good set of an important and interesting title. (ESTC T152908. Allibone 215. Brunet 1076). Title continues: During the time he was Secretary of State to Queen Anne; with State Papers, Explanatory notes, and a translation of the Foreign Letters, &c. Bolingbroke, politician, diplomatist, and author whose reputation as a philosopher was never substantial and, after the publication of his essays, it has never recovered. For nearly 200 years he was also widely condemned as an unprincipled political charlatan. Only in the late twentieth century did historians at last recognize him as a substantial, if flawed, political figure in Anne's reign and as a brilliant, if eventually unsuccessful, political writer in the age of Walpole. Although he supported a losing political cause, his career tells us much about the vicissitudes of the tory party and the divisions over fundamental issues of principle that cast them, a potential majority of the political nation, into the political wilderness after 1714. Bolingbroke's writings tell us much about the ideological divisions that persisted under the first two Hanoverian monarchs. See ODNB.

        An Appeal to Matter of Fact and Common Senseor, A Rational Demonstration of Man's Corrupt and Lost Estate

      London - Whitfield7 by 4; 228pp., 1798. London - Whitfield7 by 4; 228pp., 1798 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. An appeal to the application of reason and importance of man's fallen condition by Wesley's favourite, John Fletcher. John Fletcher (1729-1785) was born in Switzerland, and studied classics in Geneva after a short career in the military. Arriving in England in 1750; he came to the attention of the Wesleys and converted to Protestantism in 1753,taking Holy Orders three years later. Fletcherhad a 'model' Anglican ministry in Madeley,whilstmaintaining his links to evangelicals (despite John Wesley's disappointment with his friend'sdecision not to establish himself as a dissenting minister). By 1761, the Wesleyans held Fletcher in such regard that they wooed him by positing him as a successor to John Wesley, until he prematurely predeceased the latter. In this volume, Fletcher appeals to his parishioners (to whom the volume is dedicated) to have regard for Paul's plea as to the importance of 'reason and revelation. ' He goes on to assert that Christanity is distinct from Deist religions because of 'the doctrine of man's corrupt and lost estate,' citing the harshness of nature and the pain and risk of childbirth as examples of divine retribution for as much. Condition: Recently rebound in very smart polished dark calf. Very minimal shelfwear. Internally, new endpapers (bookplate of Professor David Arthur Palin to frong pastedown).         AN ACT TO SUSPEND THE COMMERCIAL INTERCOURSE BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES AND FRANCE, AND THE DEPENDENCIES THEREOF [caption title]

      [Philadelphia. 1798].. [Philadelphia. 1798].. [2]pp. on a single folio sheet. Docketed in ink on the verso. Three old horizontal folds. Neat separations at the edges of the folds, with no loss. 3-inch by 1-inch portion of lower left corner torn away, not affecting text. About very good. Rare congressional act, signed in type at the conclusion by President Adams, Vice-President Jefferson, and Speaker of the House Jonathan Dayton, suspending trade with France during the so- called "Quasi-War" of the late 1790s. The act was approved June 13, 1798. The Quasi- War was an undeclared conflict between the United States and France during the Adams administration in the late 1790s, manifested mostly in naval engagements between the two nations. The war was the outgrowth of deteriorating Franco-American relations, which had been weakened earlier in the decade by the "Genet Affair" and the "XYZ Affair," and it wreaked havoc on commerce between the two nations. One of the main weapons wielded by Adams was to ban American commerce from France and French dependencies, accomplished by this congressional act. The law commands that "no ship or vessel, owned, hired, or employed, wholly or in part, by any person resident within the United States, and which shall depart therefrom after the first day of July next, shall be allowed to proceed directly, or from any intermediate port or place, to any port or place within the territory of the French Republic, or the dependencies thereof, or to any place in the West-Indies, or elsewhere, under the acknowledged government of France, or shall be employed in any traffic or commerce with or for any person resident within the jurisdiction, or under the authority of the French Republic." The act goes on to bar French commerce and French ships from American ports, and spells out the steps that France must take to end the trade embargo, namely to refrain from the "aggressions, depredations, and hostilities" that they have undertaken against the United States. ESTC locates only a single copy, at the John Carter Brown Library; there is also a copy at the Library of Congress. Both ESTC and Evans give a collation of 2,2pp., yet this text is complete in the two pages on the single sheet found here, and it is docketed on the verso. It seems that Evans and ESTC are counting a blank conjugate leaf as part of the collation. EVANS 34710. ESTC W14826.

        AN ACT SUPPLEMENTARY TO, AND TO AMEND THE ACT, INTITULED, "AN ACT TO ESTABLISH AN UNIFORM RULE OF NATURALIZATION; AND TO REPEAL THE ACT HERETOFORE PASSED ON THAT SUBJECT." [caption title].

      [Philadelphia. 1798]. - [2]pp. on a folio sheet. Docketed on the verso. Very good. Rare printing of a law that was part of the highly controversial "Alien and Sedition Acts" passed during the administration of John Adams. The first American naturalization act was passed in 1790, and held that a free white person could be a candidate for citizenship provided they have lived within the United States for two years, being a resident of one state for at least one year. In 1795 Congress passed a law increasing the residency requirement from two to five years. The present law, passed during heightened tensions with France during the so-called "Quasi-War," increases the residency period from five to fourteen years, and also requires all aliens to register with the federal government. The law also proscribes citizenship for any native of a nation or state with which the United States is at war. This law was not repealed until 1802, during Jefferson's first term as president, when the residency requirement reverted back to five years. ESTC locates only two copies of this contentious law, at the American Antiquarian Society, and the University of Virginia; OCLC adds a copy at Central Connecticut State University, and Evans at the John Carter Brown Library. EVANS 34700. ESTC W14669. OCLC 11420339.

        An Essay On British Cottage Architecture: Being An Attempt to perpetuate on Principle, that peculiar mode of Building, which was originally the effect of Chance

      London: Hookham and Carpenter, 1798. London: Hookham and Carpenter, 1798. First Edition. Folio (36 x 30 cm). Later gray card boards, cloth spine strip; halftitle, title page, 1, [2-27] pp. and twenty-one leaves of plates featuring sepia aquatint engravings, with original tissue guards. Front hinge broken; foxing and light dust-soiling to edges; a few tissue guards creased or detached (but present); light soil to a few pages. An important architectural treatise by the Irish draughtsman, architect, and designer James Malton, which signals the coming of the Romantic era in architecture, marked by its return to traditional and nativist forms and away from neo-classical design and Palladianism; it is also an early forerunner of the modern phenomenon of preservationism. Malton, known for his technically stunning depictions of Georgian-era Dublin, lays out a program for wealthy Britons that eschews the growing decadence of the elites and the newly-affluent colonial merchants in favor of a more traditional and economical form of the cottage. Malton argues against innovation in architecture, and especially against “mongrelism”, or the importation of motifs and designs from abroad. The majority of the work consists of Malton’s descriptions of his original designs and his plans for cottage architecture as a stately form. Malton attends to an entire array of structural and aesthetic details, making this work an important text for architects in the succeeding decades. This copy features bookplates of Counts Nikolai Petrovich Sheremetev (1751-1809) and Sergei Dmitrievich Sheremetev (1848-1918). Both were important patrons of the arts and collectors who maintained an active interest in architecture. Nikolai Petrovich Sheremetev planned the final phase of the palace complex at Ostankino; Sergei Dmitrievich was instrumental in the building of the War of 1812 Museum.
