Nathaniel Crouch (born c. 1632) was an English printer and bookseller, and under the pseudonym Richard Burton (or R.B.) wrote historical books as well. As a historian, he is considered a hack, borrowing material from other books and rewriting them under his pseudonym, then publishing and marketing them under the Crouch imprint. Though he was the type of writer/publisher denounced in the following century by writers such as Samuel Butler and Alexander Pope, more recent assessments of his life and career see him as an important figure in the development of historiography, especially in the popularization of a hitherto high-culture genre of discourse.Later edition of Singerman # 0077.         Wasch- Bleich- Platt- und Naeh-Buch, zum Selbstunterricht für Damen, welche sich mit diesen Arbeiten beschäftigen.

Eleven engraved plates (one printed in red ink, four with fine orig. coloring), one linen embroidered sampler, and one pouncing pattern plate of pricked holes. 2 p.l., 38 pp. Oblong small folio, cont. green wrappers. Leipzig: Voss, 1796. First edition and very rare; WorldCat locates only one copy in North America (Clark Institute). Netto (1756-1810), a Leipzig-based art teacher and author, wrote a series of rare and attractive works on embroidery and pattern books. This appears to be his rarest. The plates consist of six sets of embroidery patterns, etched and signed by Netto. Five of the sets (plates II-VI) are reproduced in duplicate, once in black-and-white and the second in fine original coloring (one is printed in red ink, one is heightened in gold). Plate I is reproduced as an etching, as an embroidery sample, and as a plate with pouncing patterns. Altogether, there are 37 designs for various purposes. Netto also collaborated on a general treatise of household hints that included suggestions on a variety of topics, ranging from linen weaving and protecting wool against moth damage, to growing vegetables in the winter. A fine copy of a rare and extremely attractive book. Slightly soiled in white margins. ❧ Not in Berlin Katalog. .

JOE MILLER'S JESTS; OR THE WIT'S VADE MECUM

London: Printed and Published by J. Barker, [1796]. n. This is a classic collection of English humor, first published in 1739 and offered here in a charming Victorian binding. Joe Miller (1684-1738) was an English actor who trod the boards of Drury Lane, and was of such a humorless disposition that his drinking companions ironically attributed all jokes, old and new, to him. After his death, writer John Mottley (1692-1750) compiled "Millerisms" for what would become the first edition of this volume, a collection of ancient and contemporary broad English humor typified by the following quip: "A famous teacher of Arithmetick, who had long been married without being able to get his Wife with Child, once said to her, 'Madam, your Husband is an excellent Arithmetician.' 'Yes,' replies she, 'only he can't multiply.'" Former owners Sir William Augustus Fraser, 4th Baronet of Leadclune (1826-98) and Allan Heywood Bright (1862-1941) were both British politicians; perhaps their profession drove them to seek solace in levity.. 188 x 114 mm. (7 1/2 x 4 1/2"). 1 p.l. (frontispiece), 164 pp. Pleasing 19th century mottled calf, gilt, by Jenkins & Cecil (stamp-signed on verso of front free endpaper), covers with gilt fillet frame, oblique floral spray cornerpieces, raised bands, spine compartments with central botanical ornament surrounded by small tools, leafy cornerpieces, red morocco label, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers. With frontispiece portrait. Front pastedown with the armorial bookplate of Sir William Augustus Fraser; front free endpaper with that of Allan Heywood Bright. Lowndes III, 1203. Joints a bit rubbed and flaked, the text slightly browned (with isolated minor foxing) because of inferior paper stock, but still a very appealing copy, internally fresh, and the decorative binding quite lustrous.         Bibliothecae Samuelis S.R.I. Com. Teleki de Szék. Pars Prima [-Tertia].

Finely engraved port. of the collector & engraved title in Vol. I. xxxvii, [11], 313, [25] pp.; xxxvi, [14], 436, [41] pp.; 1 p.l., iv, [4], 285, [25] pp., [3], 290-672, [30] pp. Three vols. (Vol. III in two parts). 8vo, modern paste-paper boards, uncut. Vienna: M. Pulio, 1796 [Vol. I]; M.A. Schmidt, 1800 [Vol. II]; A. Pichler, 1811 [Vol. III]. First edition of one of the rarest of all private library catalogues; this copy lacks, as usual, the fourth volume published in 1819. WorldCat locates only one possibly complete set (and the bibliographical details of that set, in Hungary, are sketchy); in the U.S., the only three sets located by WorldCat -- Newberry, Columbia, and Harvard -- all lack the fourth volume (Harvard lacks the third volume as well). The Oxford copy also lacks the fourth volume. Teleki (1739-1822), formed his collection over a long period and his books relating to Hungarian and Transylvanian history were only rivaled by the Szechenyi library. After Teleki's death, the family donated in 1826 a large part of the library -- about 30,000 volumes -- to the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and this was the beginning of the Academy's library. The Teleki catalogue, along with that of Szechenyi, are the basis for all bibliographical information relating to Hungarian authors, history, and literature. They have never been rendered obsolete by subsequent publications. Fine set and of great rarity. Our copy has the very rare and attractive frontispiece portrait of Teleki which is usually missing. ❧ Taylor, Book Catalogues, p. 264-(the Johns Hopkins copy seems to be a ghost). .

Grundlage des Naturrechts nach Principien der Wissenschaftslehre. 2 vols.

Iena und Leipzig, Christian Ernst Gabler, 1796 & 1797. Tall 8vo. An absolutely lovely set, bound in two contemporary, uniform half calf bindings with blindstamped and gilt ornamentations to spines. Marbled edges. A bit of wear to extremities, but overall very well kept. Book plate of Th de Jonghe to inside of front boards. (24), 229, (1, -errata); (2), 269 pp.. The rare first edition of both volumes of one of Fichte's most important and influential works. Fichte begins his fundamental "Foundation of Natural Rights" with his famous theories of self-consciousness and on the basis of this develops his system of ethical idealism, which came to greatly effect early 18th century thought. "In the history of philosophy, Fichte's thought marks a crucial transitional stage between Kant and post-Kantian philosophy. Fichte radicalized Kant's thought by arguing that human freedom, not external reality, must be the starting point of all systematic philosophy, and in Foundations of Natural Right, thought by many to be his most important work of political philosophy, he applies his ideas to fundamental issues in political and legal philosophy, covering such topics as civic freedom, rights, private property, contracts, family relations, and the foundations of modern political organization."         PLAT OF THE SEVEN RANGES OF TOWNSHIPS BEING PART OF THE TERRITORY OF THE UNITED STATES N.W. OF THE RIVER OHIO WHICH BY A LATE ACT OF CONGRESS ARE DIRECTED TO BE SOLD

[Philadelphia: Mathew Carey, 1796. Map, 24 1/4 x 13 3/4 inches (the area of the plate mark). Matted and framed to 33 x 22 1/4 inches. Old fold lines. Near fine. A fundamentally important map in the westward development of the United States and the mapping of Ohio and the Old Northwest. This map was created as a result of the Land Ordinance of 1785, which set out an orderly method for surveying and selling western lands. The Confederation Congress hoped that proceeds from these sales would help settle the debts growing out of the American Revolution. The map was created from the surveys of Thomas Hutchins, who had been Geographer to the United States until his death in 1789. Hutchins had already surveyed the area several times, and he and his assistants mapped out four of the original seven township ranges before he died. The final three ranges were subsequently mapped, and the "Seven Ranges" became the first portion of Ohio surveyed under the Land Ordinance of 1785. The area surveyed under the Ordinance and depicted on this map is in the form of a triangle, with a ninety-one-mile western boundary, a forty-two-mile northern boundary, and with the Ohio River forming the eastern boundary. Each township range would consist of thirty-six square miles of territory divided into thirty-six separately numbered square mile sections, each made up of 640 acres. Certain sections were reserved for the federal government, and others were earmarked for sale. Section sixteen in each township was set aside for a public school. The map is drawn on a scale of four miles to the inch. The true importance of this map is not its immediate cartography, but what it set in motion. From these townships westward, all of the United States (excepting those areas along the Mississippi or in the Southwest, where French and Spanish settlement had created different land patterns) were laid out in the township grids from Ohio to the Pacific Ocean. More than any other act of man, this has transformed the landscape of America, as anyone looking out an airplane window can readily see. "Very few printed pieces are of more importance in the history of Ohio than this survey of a part of the future state" - FIFTY OHIO RARITIES. The present map is in Wheat & Brun's first state, without the publisher's imprint below the neat line at the bottom. WHEAT & BRUN 676. KARROW (OHIO) 2441. RISTOW, pp.145-47.         The Progress of Civil Society. A didactic Poem. In six Books .

Printed by W. Bulmer and Co. for G. Nicol ., London 1796 - First edition. 'Knight used landscape as a metaphor to pursue the political and moral issues that preoccupied him: the superstition and bigotry of the Christian church, his claims to freedom of expression, and his opposition to any kind of political and personal oppression. He developed these ideas further in a second long, didactic poem, The Progress of Civil Society (1796), an encyclopaedic investigation into the history of mankind, progressing from international to national, and personal interrelations between peoples and people. Like Winckelmann, Knight regarded fifth-century Greece as the culmination of civil society and he linked its success to the political and personal freedoms enjoyed by its citizens. In modern times he saw, with Montesquieu, religious superstition, repressive government, and personal bigotry as the cause of mankind's decline. "Missing the mood of the moment" (Ballantyne), Knight ended his poem with an enthusiastic endorsement of the French Revolution, which, despite his condemnation of the violence of the terror, understandably further antagonized his critics, who attacked him in conservative journals such as the British Critic and The Anti-Jacobin' (Oxford DNB). 4to (315 × 249 mm), pp. xxii, [1], 155, [1]; complete with half-title; uncut in the original boards, paper spine perished, remains of printed label; Brocket Hall bookplate (Lords Melbourne, Palmerston, etc.).         THE FLOATING IDEAS OF NATURE, SUITED TO THE PHILOSOPHER, FARMER, and MECHANIC. [complete in two volumes]

Printed for the Author, London 1796 - pp. vol. I: [4], [ix]-xvi, 17-318, [2- index,] [2- blank]; voll. II: 108, *109 - *134, 109-290, [325]-332, 291-296. Folding table frontispiece to volume I. The pagination is somewhat erratic, but all seems to be present, there is stub to the preliminaries of vol. I but this is from the folding table. Collation as follows vol. I Title, Advertisment leaf, Preface, Introduction, main text, Index; vol. II; Title page, Preface, Appendix, List of subscribers. Full, conteporary bindings of tree sheep, gilt decoration to the spines. Bindings worn to the spine with much of the covering leather chipped off, the boards remain firmly attached, but ideally need to be rebacked. All edges dyed yellow. Contents clean and tight, paper clean and crisp. A good/;very good set. All of Varlo's self- published works are scarce, but this title is particularly scarce - the list of subscribers listing only around 225 names. It is a later issue with some new material but, essentially as preceding editions: - "The Essence of Agriculture" in 1786 and "Nature Displayed" in 1793. Varlo went to America in 1784, expecting, apparently, to be acknowledged as governor of the province of New Jersey, through a grant from Charles I to Sir Edmund Plowden. This claim was dismissed in the courts. Varlo's twelve months' tour through the states of New England, Maryland, and Virginia is described in chapters three and four with fascinating accounts of George Washington and General Eathen Allen. Varlo's text while predominantly about British agriculture includes various references to American Agriculture including sections on Indian corn and tobacco. Varlo was free thinking and his text is enriched with his own observations and social commentary including his views on social injustices; some of his beliefs and thoughts were ahead of his time: - Chapter XXVI - ".my thoughts upon the most barbarous law which prevails in England, of hanging fellons." and concludes ".neither do I think that the law, as it now stands, for hanging felons, has the desired effect in lessening the growth of evils." The following chapter is entitled "A scheme to dispose of Felons, without Death or transportation, and make them useful Members of Society." Of tobacco users he says ".we are confident many in those countries that go without shoes and stockings, destroy more money in tobacco than would keep them in these articles; in short, it is a foolish, dirty, unmeaning custom, which ought to be abolished by every person of sense, having no good quality attending it." .
