The Progress of Civil Society. A didactic Poem. In six Books .

Printed by W. Bulmer and Co. for G. Nicol ., London 1796 - First edition. 'Knight used landscape as a metaphor to pursue the political and moral issues that preoccupied him: the superstition and bigotry of the Christian church, his claims to freedom of expression, and his opposition to any kind of political and personal oppression. He developed these ideas further in a second long, didactic poem, The Progress of Civil Society (1796), an encyclopaedic investigation into the history of mankind, progressing from international to national, and personal interrelations between peoples and people. Like Winckelmann, Knight regarded fifth-century Greece as the culmination of civil society and he linked its success to the political and personal freedoms enjoyed by its citizens. In modern times he saw, with Montesquieu, religious superstition, repressive government, and personal bigotry as the cause of mankind's decline. "Missing the mood of the moment" (Ballantyne), Knight ended his poem with an enthusiastic endorsement of the French Revolution, which, despite his condemnation of the violence of the terror, understandably further antagonized his critics, who attacked him in conservative journals such as the British Critic and The Anti-Jacobin' (Oxford DNB). 4to (315 × 249 mm), pp. xxii, [1], 155, [1]; complete with half-title; uncut in the original boards, paper spine perished, remains of printed label; Brocket Hall bookplate (Lords Melbourne, Palmerston, etc.).         THE FLOATING IDEAS OF NATURE, SUITED TO THE PHILOSOPHER, FARMER, and MECHANIC. [complete in two volumes]

Printed for the Author, London 1796 - pp. vol. I: [4], [ix]-xvi, 17-318, [2- index,] [2- blank]; voll. II: 108, *109 - *134, 109-290, [325]-332, 291-296. Folding table frontispiece to volume I. The pagination is somewhat erratic, but all seems to be present, there is stub to the preliminaries of vol. I but this is from the folding table. Collation as follows vol. I Title, Advertisment leaf, Preface, Introduction, main text, Index; vol. II; Title page, Preface, Appendix, List of subscribers. Full, conteporary bindings of tree sheep, gilt decoration to the spines. Bindings worn to the spine with much of the covering leather chipped off, the boards remain firmly attached, but ideally need to be rebacked. All edges dyed yellow. Contents clean and tight, paper clean and crisp. A good/;very good set. All of Varlo's self- published works are scarce, but this title is particularly scarce - the list of subscribers listing only around 225 names. It is a later issue with some new material but, essentially as preceding editions: - "The Essence of Agriculture" in 1786 and "Nature Displayed" in 1793. Varlo went to America in 1784, expecting, apparently, to be acknowledged as governor of the province of New Jersey, through a grant from Charles I to Sir Edmund Plowden. This claim was dismissed in the courts. Varlo's twelve months' tour through the states of New England, Maryland, and Virginia is described in chapters three and four with fascinating accounts of George Washington and General Eathen Allen. Varlo's text while predominantly about British agriculture includes various references to American Agriculture including sections on Indian corn and tobacco. Varlo was free thinking and his text is enriched with his own observations and social commentary including his views on social injustices; some of his beliefs and thoughts were ahead of his time: - Chapter XXVI - ".my thoughts upon the most barbarous law which prevails in England, of hanging fellons." and concludes ".neither do I think that the law, as it now stands, for hanging felons, has the desired effect in lessening the growth of evils." The following chapter is entitled "A scheme to dispose of Felons, without Death or transportation, and make them useful Members of Society." Of tobacco users he says ".we are confident many in those countries that go without shoes and stockings, destroy more money in tobacco than would keep them in these articles; in short, it is a foolish, dirty, unmeaning custom, which ought to be abolished by every person of sense, having no good quality attending it." .         Delineations of Exotick Plants cultivated in the Royal Garden at Kew. Drawn and coloured, and the botanical characters displayed according to the Linnean system, by Francis Bauer... Published by W.T. Aiton.

London, William Bulmer, 1796-(1797). Parts I-II (of 3). Large Folio (620 x 470mm). pp (4), iii, (1 blank), with 20 hand-coloured etched plates. Original blue boards, with printed paper labels on upper covers, worn and with some repairs, in a half-morocco box. First edition of Bauer's stunning depictions of ericas grown at Kew from specimens collected by Francis Masson in the Cape Colony, without the excessively rare third part which was published in 50 copies only and lacking in most copies. The unsigned preface by Sir Joseph Banks, the only text in the work, speaks of Bauer's extraordinary skill: 'It will appear singular, at first sight, that engravings of plants should be published without the addition of botanical descriptions of their generic and specific characters; but it is hoped, that every Botanist will agree, when he has examined the plates with attention, that it would have been an useless task to have compiled, and a superfluous expence to have printed, any kind of explanation concerning them; each figure is intended to answer itself every question a Botanist can wish to ask, respecting the structure of the plant it represents; the situation of the leaves and flowers are carefully imitated, and the shape of each is given in a magnified, as well as in a natural size. The internal structure of the flower, respecting the shape and comparative size of its component parts, is also, in all cases, carefully displayed... ' The reader is referred to the Hortus Kewensis for details of synonymy and specific differentiae./According to a note by Sir Everard Home in the Natural History Museum copy, from information supplied him by Bauer, 90 copies of the first part were printed, but ten of them were spoiled in colouring, of the second part 80 copies were printed and of the third only 50./Blunt considers Bauer to have been 'the greatest botanical artist of all time' and notes that only in the present work can 'we appreciate the force of his draughtsmanship'.//Dunthorne 28; Great Flower Books p 49; Henrey 437; Hunt 747; Nissen BBI 97; Stafleu and Cowan 363.

The collection of plates and text comprises the "Figures des Plantes de P. Richer de Belleval". Richer de Belleval (1564-1632) was one of the early French botanists. He planned to publish a work with about 500 plates describing unknown plants of the Alps. The copper plates were made but the work was not published. The botanist Gilibert found about 300 of them in a bookshop in Montpellier, and used them in the above work for the first time, almost 200 year after they were made. If the work had been published during the lifetime of Richer de Belleval he would have been remembered as one of the very important early botanists. According to a note written in the book plate 277 was never published./The work contains 5 series.

Paris, Buisson, (1796/97) - An Cinquième De La République. 8vo. Very nice contemporary half calf with gilt spine. Minor, barely noticeable repair to upper capital and slight bumping to corners. A very nice and clean copy, with only very minor brownspotting. Printed on good paper. With the half-title (bearing the "Décret concernant les Contrefacteurs" on verso). Book plate of Guy de Portuales to inside of front board. (4), 411, (1) pp.. The very rare first edition of Diderot's famous novel, "The Nun", which was actually begun as an elaborate practical joke, but which ended up as one of the most famous novels of the period. A great succes-de-scandale, "The Nun" has both fascinated and unsettled the vast reading public since its first appearance. It started out as a series of letters from a fictitious character, the nun Suzanne, to one of Diderot's friends, the Marquis de Crosmare (who Diderot was trying to lure back to Paris), describing her intolerable life in the convent and imploring him to help regain her freedom and her renounce her vows. The fictitious letters were later revised and written in to the novel that we know today. The work was completed in ab. 1780 and was published posthumously in 1796/97, attracting enormous attention and bringing to light a number of issues that had not previously been publically addressed. It focuses on the then-current practice of forcing young women into convents in order to get them out of the way, on the unnatural life of the convents, and on the corruption in religious institutions and among the clergy. As such, it caused an outrage when it appeared and and became an instant succes-de-scandale. "A novel mingling mysticism, madness, sadistic cruelty and nascent sexuality, it gives a scathing insight into the effects of forced vocations and the unnatural life of the convent. A succes de scandale at the end of the eighteenth century, it has attracted and unsettled readers ever since. For Diderot's novel is not simply a story of a young girl with a bad habit; it is also a powerfully emblematic fable about oppression and intolerance. This new translation includes Diderot's all-important prefatory material, which he placed, disconcertingly, at the end of the novel, and which turns what otherwise seems like an exercise in realism into what is now regarded as a masterpiece of proto-modernist fiction." (From the Oxford University Press edition, 2005). Tchemerzine IV:471

The binding presents very minor peeling from different periods. Judging by the strong hinges (necessary to handle a volume of this size) professionally placed in the 20th century, this was perhaps when the binding was built . The sizes of the boards, the spine and the body of the work lead us to think that the spine belongs to the original binding. Most of the engravings have a protective silk tissue. Tomkins, made between 1806 and 1811, from the works of Bandinello, Canaletti, The Caracci, Leonardo, Lorrain, Michelangelo, The Poussin, Raphael and Swanvelt..- // Extraordinary volume, absolutely complete of its engravings, of the collection published by John Chamberlaine in 1812. Appointed 'Keeper of Drawings and Medals to the King' in 1791, from the time he took charge of the position he was determined to make the royal collections known, making reproductions of some of the best works by the great masters featured in the collection, in a work that spanned 30 years. After a successful anthology of works by Holbein started in 1792 (and which he didn't finish until 1800), between 1795 and 1796 he started another two series that were to be interrupted for long fore reasons unknown. One, dedicated to Leonardo, was planned for two instalments, with a total of eighteen engravings and Leonardo's self-portrait. The first of these, which appeared in 1796 with a front cover, a brief study of Leonardo, nine engravings dated in 1795 and 1796, two of them of anatomy, and the transcription and translation of the handwritten notes that appeared on those two engravings, was entitled Imitations of original designs by Leonardo da Vinci(1). The second series, on the Carracci, planned to include thirteen engravings and the self-portrait Anibal Carracci in two instalments. The first one was published at the end of 1797, with six engravings with the self-portrait included- all of them engraved between 1796 and 1797 by Bartolozzi, accompanied by the cover of the series and a brief study on the Carracci. The title was Engravings from the original designs of Annibale, Agostino, and Ludovico Caracci, in His Majesty's collection(2). The publication came printed with a dedication to the three eldest daughters of King George III: Charlotte, Augusta and Elizabeth. When nine years later and no other instalment of any of the other two series had appeared, Chamberlaine became active again, for equally unknown reasons. In October 1806 he published another ten engravings, after drawings by Leonardo. And between that month and May of 1807, he did likewise with seven more engravings reproducing works of the Carracci, ten with works by Claude Lorrain, one by Raphael and another by Nicolas Poussin. After another pause, in 1809 he turned out sixteen engravings from the works of Bandinelli, Leonardo, Lorrain, Poussin y Raphael. And one and a half years later, on the 17th of April 1811, he dated another eight engravings reproducing the works of Canaletti, Leonardo, Lorrain, Michelangelo, Poussin y Herman Swanevelt. With all this work already produced, in 1812 he decided to compose this volume, which he only then entitled Original Designs of the Most Celebrated Masters of the Bolognese, Roman, Florentine, and Venetian Schools; Comprising Some of the Works of Leonardo da Vinci, the Caracci, Claude Lorraine, Raphael, Michael Angelo, the Poussins, and others, in His Majesty Collection. Both Brunet (confusing the titles), and Graesse (who didn't get confused), talk as if both the series of Leonardo and of the Carracci, and the later impressions, were pre-planned as a group, a unity, from the beginning, which was published between 1796 and 1811 in 8 fascicles, costing 2 pounds 2 shillings each. But although it is true that (almost all of) the set of prints were being published in instalments, with the previously mentioned interruptions, the truth is that they weren t originally designed to compose a single body of work and it seems that only from 1806 did it begin to be conceived in this way. In fact, the titles of the instalments were evolving, until it started to include the content of everything that had already been published. The title of the sixth fascicle, for instance, which appeared at the end of 1808, was ""Engravings from original designs by Da Vinci, the Carracci s, Claude, the Poussins, Raphael, &c""(3). What Chamberlaine eventually did in 1812 was to combine (almost) all the plates published into a single body, giving them unity with a table of contents of 66 engravings, and incorporating (so the title ensures us) the studies on Leonardo and on the Carracci. In fact, this publication is usually spoken about in reference to the 66 plates of the table of contents and the two studies. To this content, however, should be added the covers of the two first instalments, each of their dedications, and the plates of Leonardo's anatomy studies, the two that had been printed for the first instalment together with the transcription and translation of the notes they included, and another five that had not been issued previously, including the engraving of the physiology reproduction. And the coloured stippled engraving of Bartolozzi from the Ecce homo design by Guido Reni, printed on Christmas day of 1802, also appears in very few copies as the frontispiece(4). This total theoretical content, with 74 engravings distributed on 68 leaves, is what we have detailed at the start of this description, based on the comparison of this copy we offer with those existing in the Smithsonian Institution, the Biblioteca Hertziana in Roma, the British Museum and the John Hopkins University. The most complete of all of them, the copy from the Bibliotheca Hertziana, lacks the dedication to the king of the first instalment of Leonardo. Next would rank the copy we offer here, which lacks only the cover of the instalment of Leonardo and the dedication of the study on the Carracci to the king's daughters. After these, would come the copy from the British Museum, which, even if disorderly, is only missing one engraving: the frontispiece with the Ecce Homo by Reni. Then would rank the copy of the John Hopkins, which is missing some engravings, and the Smithsonian's, which is missing the seven engravings of Leonardo's anatomy (as was the case with the copy auctioned at Christies in 2009). In any case, the engravings that appear in these copies show variants. Thus, the smallest of Lorrain's landscape paintings, are individually printed in some copies, and are printed in pairs in others. Different states of some plates also appear, with or without aquatint, with or without the printed legend ""IN HER MAJESTY'S COLLECTION"" and with or without the design and size credits printed, and engraved by hand or not. (We have the detailed information and photographs of each engraving)..- // (1) On its publication, cfr. The Monthy Review, 25 (1798) 2: 233-235.
