The Royal Captives: A Fragment of a Secret History Copied from an Old Manuscript

Philadelphia: Printed for Robert Campbell, 1795 [vols 1 & 2]; Philadelphia: Published by Thomas Bradford, 1796 [vol. 3], 1795. One of two American editions of the first two volumes, priority not established; first American edition of the final volume. Evans 29933 (vols 1 & 2); the Bradford final volume is not in Evans; ESTC records nine copies of vols 1 & 2 and three copies of the Bradford final volume (AAS, LCP and Mich). The bindings are in relatively good condition; the text in vol. 1 is a little ragged, with clean tears in several leaves, and one tear in a margin affecting a few words of text (but not the sense); the text of vol. 2 is somewhat better; both volumes are moderately foxed and stained, with several gatherings sprung - but overall a decent, sound copy of a rare book.. 3 vols in 2 , 12mo, contemporary tree calf, red morocco labels, gilt rules and lettering. Four pages of publisher's terminal ads for in the third volume. A gothic thriller by the Blue stocking poet, better known as the "Bristol Milkmaid," based on the popular French tale of the man in the iron mask. Yearsley (1753-1806) notes in her preface that she intentionally left the novel incomplete and implies that if the public demands it of her she will finish her tale; thus "Finis" is found at the end of vol. 2 in both the London and the American editions. A demand did exist, and vols 3 & 4 followed shortly the same year in London. The completion of the American edition was published in one volume in 1796 by Thomas Bradford, who had not been involved in either of the earlier Philadelphia editions. Bradford's final volume is rare, as indicated by the small number of copies recorded in ESTC. A well read copy, as evidenced by several contemporary ownership signatures on the front paste-downs.

Tai hyakuchin ryori himitsubako [trans.: Secret Treasury of One Hundred Sea Bream Dishes]

Illus. title-page & one illus. in the text. 31; 26 folding leaves. Two vols. 8vo, orig. patterned wrappers, orig. block printed label on upper cover of Vol. I (lacking on Vol. II), new stitching. Edo & Kyoto: 1795. First edition of this early work on the sea bream and its role in Japanese cuisine. This is one in the "hundred tricks" series of recipe books, which also included books on tofu, eggs, whale, rices dishes, conger eel, and devil's tongue, issued between 1782 and 1846. "An author who wrote under the name Kidodo dominated this genre of writings. Little is known about this mysterious author. Kidodo may have worked as a professional restaurant chef in Kyoto, where all his books were published…[one of his writings] refers to him as a cook (ryorinin), and invites readers to visit the author if they have any questions about food preparation…Judging from his publications, which are the only record we have for him, he was certainly prolific and imaginative…Kidodo wrote six of the sixteen hundred-tricks texts, far more than any other author. This is all the more remarkable for the fact that five of his books appeared in printed in the same year."-Rath, Food and Fantasy in Early Modern Japan, pp. 176-81-(& see the whole passage for more fascinating insights). Sea bream is a very versatile fish, used in many kinds of preparations. During the Edo period, sea bream was considered the "king of fish," and, having auspicious qualities, was frequently presented at celebratory banquets (weddings, New Year's parties, etc.). The recipes included in this work come from various regions in Japan. In the preface, Kidodo relates that he went around to all the leading families and asked for their favorite secret family recipes for sea bream. Rath, in error, cites 1785 as the date of publication. The preface is dated "1785" but the imprint is "1795." Very nice copy. Minor marginal worming.

        Anfangsgründe der antiphlogistischen Chemie

Finely engraved frontis. port. of Girtanner. 2 p.l., [7]-16, 466 pp. 8vo, cont. half-sheep & speckled boards (minor rubbing), spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Berlin: J.F. Unger, 1795. Second edition, corrected and greatly enlarged, of the first German textbook of chemistry based on the antiphlogistic system. Girtanner (1760-1800), a native of Switzerland, practiced medicine at Göttingen. He had lived in Paris for some time where he got acquainted with the leaders of the new chemistry. In 1791, he published a German translation of the new chemical nomenclature and in 1792 he published the first edition of the present work which for the first time gave a detailed exposition of Lavoisier's system to the German public. In this edition, he frequently refers to objections made by J.B. Richter, who had been converted to Lavoisier's theory after reading Girtanner's book but had raised some pertinent questions. In the preface Girtanner eulogizes Lavoisier whose death had occurred after the publication of the first edition. A fine, fresh, and tall copy. Girtanner's portrait appears in this edition for the first time. ? Cole 525. D.S.B., V, p. 411. Neville, I, pp. 525-26. Partington, III, pp. 589-90.

        Théorie de la terre.

Paris: Maradan, an III (1795 vieux style). Edition originale, 3 volumes in-8; T.I: xvi, 422p., 2 planches dépliantes. Raje Gaut, The Principal Road Up To Rotas Ghur, Bahar

1795 - DANIELL, Thomas and William. Raje Gaut, The Principal Road Up To Rotas Ghur, Bahar. [London]: Published as the Act directs by Thos. Daniell, July, 1795. Color-printed aquatint with hand-finishing on wove paper, measuring 21 by 28 inches; handsomely matted and framed, entire piece measures 34 by 28 inches. $4800.Beautiful large plate from Thomas and William Daniell's celebrated book Oriental Scenery, a color-printed aquatint finished by hand. The Daniells' Oriental Scenery is considered one of the finest illustrated works on India. Thomas Daniell and his nephew William spent nine years in India making studies, sketches and drawings of the scenery, architecture, and antiquities that graced the countryside. They then devoted a further 13 years to publishing their remarkably accurate aquatints. In Britain, the impact was explosive. A cult of Indian architecture, landscaping and interior decoration arose, with the Royal Pavilion at Brighton as its centerpiece. The Daniells gave the English public their first accurate look at the exotic sub-continent. Their great achievement still lies in their ability to blend the picturesque with the real, resulting in images that capture the European taste for the sublime landscape, while still remaining faithful to their subjects. The Daniells brought the romance of the English landscape to the antiquities of India and provided England with an accurate vision of this wondrous country. In February of 1792 during their travels, the Daniells "set out for the great Mughal fort of Rohtasgarh, travelling by the plain which skirted the Son River. On they way they stopped to draw the waterfalls near Tarachandi known as Dhuan Kund". it is clear from the many drawings and engravings of the fort and its surroundings that they delighted in this splendid monument and its high, romantic setting" (Archer, Early Views of India, 103). Consisting of 144 views, published in six parts, the work was issued in seven stages: three sets of 24 plates titled Oriental Scenery with title dates of 1795, 1797, and 1801 (this plate was published in the first part); 12 plates titled Antiquities of India dated 1799; 24 plates titled Hindoo Excavations dated 1803; 24 plates titled Views in Hindoostan dated 1807; and 12 further plates of Antiquities of India published without a title page in 1808. All plates were engraved by the Daniells and all are taken from their drawings save the 24 plates of Hindoo Excavations, which are after drawings by James Wales. See Abbey, Travel 420 (plate no. 6).         Ehon hitachiobi [trans.: Picture Book: Divining a Good Match]

21 double-page & 3 full-page woodcuts, all in black & white. 14; 13; 13 folding leaves. Three vols. 8vo (215 x 156 mm.), orig. hand-painted decorative wrappers (a little rubbed & worn, lower margins a little soiled), orig. block-printed title labels on upper covers, new stitching. [Japan]: 1795. First edition of this very rare shunga, created during the final glory years of Utamaro Kitagawa's career; WorldCat locates no original edition. This is one of the rarest of Utamaro's erotic works and is a fine set in fresh condition with excellent impressions of the woodcuts. In the beginning of each volume there is a different finely wood-engraved portrait of a woman; they demonstrate the mastery of Utamaro's art and are very much in the bijin-e tradition for which Utamaro is so celebrated. They are followed by three sets of seven double-page scenes of intense sexual intimacy. In the fourth double-page scene in the first volume, we see a fan held by the female lover. Utamaro has discretely wood-engraved his signature on the upper side of the fan. Following each set of the double-page scenes, there is text. Many of Utamaro's closest friends are portrayed. Hayashi (see below), writes that this book represents the highest wood-carving technique of the time. Portrayals of the hair of the women is very delicately wood-engraved; the block-cutters have skillfully reproduced the impressive range of Utamaro's brush-drawn lines. "In the shunga of Utamaro's last years, just as the eighteenth century was giving way to the nineteenth, it is already possible to discern new forms of expression which presage developments in ukiyo-e shunga of the late Edo period. Specifically, the taste developed for extreme enlargement and exaggeration of the sex organs, and for couplings of bodies that were unnatural - what could be described as an expressionistic tendency. Utamaro was a giant of late Edo-period ukiyo-e, endowed with considerable foresight, an artist who not only created an innovative style in his images of beautiful women, but who also paved the way for a new period of shunga."-Kobayashi Tadashi, "The Essence of Ukiyo-e Shunga" in Clark et al., Shunga. Sex and Pleasure in Japanese Art, p. 157. Fine set and extremely rare. The final three leaves of Vol. III have a faint dampstain. ? Clark et al., Shunga. Sex and Pleasure in Japanese Art, p. 407. Bonifacio represent the first application of the principles of psychiatric treatment which are at the basis of psychiatry even today. In addition to urging safe and healthful surroundings and little or no restraint for the mentally ill, Chiarugi advocated respect for insane individuals as persons, pleasant as well as authoritative behavior on the part of the physician, and the use of tact and understanding in an effort to lead patients back to truth and reason\". - Dr. Haskell F. The restraints portrayed by Chiarugi were intended to control the most violent patients, yet the image of the insane as a wild beast is not present. ... By the end of the century the view of madmen as completely out of control was being modified to conform to the perception of the etiology of insanity as what Chiarugi called ‘an impairment of the physical structure of the sensorium commune‘ (GILMAN, Seeing the insane, p. 153). \"The earliest illustrations of the pathological lesions in the brain are shown in the works of Chiarugi (1794). In association with his wife he produced Rouse's Scraps of Sussex, drawn and published by James Rouse and engraved by Elizabeth Rouse. The engravings found in this volume of Ancient and Modern History of Lewes are drawn and published by C Rouse and in most cases the engravikng has been credited to contemporary lithographer, Charles Ingrey. Description of a forty-feet reflecting telescope

London, The Royal Society of London, 1795. pp. 347-399, plus 19 folding plates showing a total of 47 figures, including the famous huge foldout plate of this enormous telescope. Contemporary half calf over marbled boards.l The forty-foot reflector telescope that William Herschel (1738-1822) built at Slough (near Windsor) in the late 1780's was at that time the largest in the world. It was compared in the popular press to the Colossus of Rhodos and other wonders of the world. The telescope is even mentioned on the Ordnance Survey map. The construction was supported by King George III, and built by Herschel, his assistant and sister Caroline. In this paper, Herschel gives detailed insight into the construction and functionality of the telescope. The article is illustrated with 19 plates, including the famous enormous foldout view of the telescope, and was published in the Philosophical Transactions for the year MDCCXCV (1795), Part II. This is the original edition, not the abridged one, with just one plate included in the Herschel paper. Additional papers of interest include the massive paper titled "An account of the trigonometrical survey carried on in the years 1791, 1792, 1793, and 1794, by order of his grace the Duke of Richmond..." presented by the Duke. This includes a very large folded map of southern England from Dorchester to Hastings, and including the Isle of Wight. This edition also includes the illustration of a new transit instrument, and a rare early paper on marsupial ontogeny titled "Some observations on the mode of generation of the Kanguroo, with particular description of the organs themselves", by Everard Home, with fine illustrations. Boards rubbed and detached, spine cover mostly perished. Most plates, but not the very large telescope plate, a bit toned, especially in the margins. Otherwise a very good clean and unmarked copy.
