Histoire De La Conjuration Des Espagnols Contre La République De Venise. Histoire De La Conjuration Des Gracques.

Chez Antoine Augustin Renouard, Paris 1795 - Anteportada - Portada y 223 pp. a gran papel. Essays on Philosophical Subjects

London: for T. Cadell Jun., W. Davies, and W. Creech in Edinburgh,, 1795. To which is prefixed, an Account of the Life and Writings of the Author; by Dugald Stewart, F.R.S.E. Quarto (298 x 230 mm). Uncut in the original publisher's boards, preserved in a custom made buckram drop-back box. Spine cracked at foot, inner hinge of front board cracked but cords holding firm, boards very lightly rubbed; two short marginal tears repaired; a very fine copy. First edition, published five years after Smith's death, edited by Dugald Stewart with his "Account of the life and writings of Adam Smith", originally presented to the Royal Society of Edinburgh in two sessions during 1793. The editor states that the essays were intended as parts of "a connected history of the liberal sciences and elegant arts", but that Smith "long since... found it necessary to abandon that plan as far too extensive". The essays range over philosophy, aesthetics and the history of science. Most were probably written before the appearance of the Theory of Moral Sentiments in 1759, but were withheld from publication as part of Smith's "extensive plan".

Graesse II, 449. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

De Lama notes copies with plates printed in black, plates "medesimi coloriti all'etrusca," and (like this copy" "altri coi rami stampati in rosso pallido entro un arabesco nero." Updike notes in Printing Types that Bodoni's earlier books such as this one are to be preferred both for their fine design and for their presswork (Vol. II,p. 165). Baretta or Bareto (1763-1810) was a Portuguese Beneductine monk whose was highly regarded. In addition to these engravings he executed many full-scale paintings at his monastery, which still survive.         Travels in the Interior Districts of Africa:

Performed Under The Direction And Patronage Of The African Association, In The Years 1795, 1796, And 1797. With An Appendix, Containing Geographical Illustrations Of Africa. By Major Rennell. London: Printed By W. Bulmer And Co. For The Author 1799. With portrait, 3 folded maps, 6 plates of which 3 are folded and 2 leaves with music. XXVIII + 372 + XCII pp. Clean and well-preserved copy with wide margin and yellow edges bound in nice contemporary full leather gilt on spine and boards. Binding weakly marked of use, front hinge weak. * Mungo Park [1771 - 1806] was a Scottish explorer of West Africa. He was the first Westerner known to have travelled to the central portion of the Niger River. Through a recommendation by Banks, he obtained the post of assistant surgeon on board the East India Company's ship Worcester, and 1794 Mungo Park offered his services to the African Association. This book Travels in the Interior Districts of Africa became a best-seller because it detailed what he observed, what he survived, and the people he encountered. His dispassionate — if not scientific or objective — descriptions set a standard for future travel writers to follow and gave Europeans a glimpse of Africa's humanity and complexity. Park introduced them to a vast continent unexplored by Europeans, and proposed by example that Europeans could exploit it. After his death, European public and political interest in Africa began to increase. Perhaps the most lasting effect of Park's travels, though, was their influence on European imperialism and colonialism. [Wikipedia].P.M.M 253.

        Carey's American Atlas

Philadelphia: Mathew Carey, 1795 FIRST EDITION of the first true American atlas, the earliest atlas of the United States engraved and published in America. This important volume contains several important state maps including the first American map representing Virginia after statehood. In the preparation of this atlas, Carey drew primarily on existing sources including Guthrie's Geography. Many of the maps were drawn by Samuel Lewis. Several of the maps of the Southern states are particularly noteworthy. The map of Georgia contains the location of several Creek and other Indian towns as well as old trading paths to the interior of the state. The map of Tennessee, here in its second state, is the first separate American map of Tennessee and contains valuable information about early settlements, towns, roads, and Indian boundaries. Unrestored examples in period bindings are very scarce. Thomas Streeter's great Americana collection contained only the 1800 edition. The Siebert collection had two badly defective copies, the second of which was apparently the 1800 reprint. Provenance: original owner's inscription "Christian Rapp bought in New York 18 September 1797 for 6 Spanish dollars." Folio. 21 engraved maps including the chart of the West Indies. Contemporary or original marbled boards and calf spine. A few minor tears mainly at folds, slight loss to page of Pennsylvania not affecting plate, some foxing, offsetting and staining, binding slightly loose. A very good copy. Evans 28390. Philips 1362. Sabin 10855. Schwartz and Ehrenberg 215.

Artist: Homann Erben (d) ; issued in: Nuremberg; date: (d)1795 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: original colored; - condition: Some restorations; - size (in cm): 45,5 x 57,5; - description: Map of the Pacific Ocean with Australia, New Zealand, and Poynesia; - vita of the artist: Johann Babtiste Homann (1664-1724) was born in Oberkammlach, the Electorate of Bavaria. Although educated at a Jesuit school, and preparing for an ecclesiastical career, he eventually converted to Protestantism and from 1687 worked as a civil law notary in Nuremberg. He soon turned to engraving and cartography; in 1702 he founded his own publishing house.Homann acquired renown as a leading German cartographer, and in 1715 was appointed Imperial Geographer by Emperor Charles VI. Giving such privileges to individuals was an added right that the Holy Roman Emperor enjoyed. In the same year he was also named a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin. Of particular significance to cartography were the imperial printing privileges (Latin: privilegia impressoria). These protected for a time the authors in all scientific fields such as printers, copper engravers, map makers and publishers. They were also very important as a recommendation for potential customers. In 1716 Homann published his masterpiece Grosser Atlas ueber die ganze Welt (Grand Atlas of all the World). Numerous maps were drawn up in cooperation with the engraver Christoph Weigel the Elder, who also published Siebmachers Wappenbuch.Homann died in Nuremberg. He was succeeded by the Homann heirs company, which was in business until 1848. The company was known as Homann Erben, Homanniani Heredes, or Heritiers de Homann abroad.

Artist: Reilly Franz Johann Joseph (d) ; issued in: Vienna; date: (d)1795 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: original colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 46 x 62; - description: Map shows total Scottland and partly Ireland, on inset map the Shetland islands. Scotland is a country that is part of the United Kingdom and covers the northern third of the island of Great Britain. In 1698, the Company of Scotland attempted a project to secure a trading colony on the Isthmus of Panama. Almost every Scottish landowner who had money to spare is said to have invested in the Darien scheme. Its failure bankrupted these landowners, but not the burghs. Nevertheless, the nobles' bankruptcy, along with the threat of an English invasion, played a leading role in convincing the Scots elite to back a union with England.; - vita of the artist: Franz Johann Joseph von Reilly (1766 - 1820) Vienna. He was an Austrian and produced over 830 maps for his great atlas project, -Schauplatz der funf Theile der Welt- between the years 1789 and 1806. Of these 830 maps published over this time span of seventeen years, he 'showcased' but one part of the world, Europe. Maps of the other four continents remained unpublished. The maps of the Schauplatz .were drawn to a uniform criteria.Reilly's Grosser deutscher Atlas was also notable as the first completely 'Austrian' atlas. This large world atlas, containing relatively few maps, was issued between 1794 and the end of 1796. Reilly may have used Franz Anton Schraembl's work as his model, at least in part.

A SHORT HISTORY OF THE NATURE AND CONSEQUENCES OF EXCISE LAWS; INCLUDING SOME ACCOUNT OF THE RECENT INTERRUPTION TO THE MANUFACTORIES OF SNUFF AND REFINED SUGAR

Philadelphia: Printed for the Booksellers, 1795. 116pp. Modern half morocco and cloth boards, spine gilt lettered. Remnant of contemporary marbled wrapper affixed to gutter of titlepage. Toning and foxing. Good. An early Callender pamphlet on taxation. The author is famous for his scandal mongering, two of his favorite targets being Hamilton and Jefferson. Callender's unscrupulous behavior was halted one day when, in a drunken stupor, he drowned in three feet of water in the James River. In this volume he opposes recently passed Congressional taxes on sugar and snuff as "ruinous to manufacture, and of consequence, unproductive to the revenue." He reviews the history of British and American excise laws, and sees only harm to American manufacturers, large and small: "The nation that, for eight years, bled in every vein to buy its freedom, will gaze on with criminal apathy while the brewer, the tanner, the tallow chandler, the soapboiler, the paper maker, the nailer, the hatter, and the newsprinter ascend in succession the scaffold of excise....A standing army will soon become requisite for supporting a system universally detested." A powerful anti-tax statement, rather scarce in the market. SABIN 10071. EVANS 28383. ESTC W29417. KRESS B2899.

Considerations on Lord Grenville?s and Mr. Pitt?s Bills, concerning treasonable and seditious practices, and unlawful assemblies. By a lover of order.

Printed for J. Johnson. [1795] - Half title. Disbound. (4), 86pp. ESTC T31251. An important radical pamphlet, written in defiance of the infamous Grenville and Pitt Bills of 1795. Godwin was steadfast in his opposition to the Acts, both of which were designed, in the name of national security, to suppress political agitation and limit the potential for civil disobedience. Godwin was concerned that the legislation would stand in the way of reform, and constituted a mendacious attempt to stymie the liberal agenda. He envisaged widespread abuse of the new laws, surmising ?the spirit of this bill is evidently to put an engine into the hands of ministers, calculated for their use in every imaginable emergency. There is no case to which this bill may not be stretched, present or future, definite or indefinite, real or fictitious, that it may not be made to include? He concludes: ?These bills are an unwilling homage, that the too eager advocates of authority pay to the rising genius of freedom? This remains a scarce item, only one copy of which has appeared in ABPC in the last thirty years. From the library of Michael Foot.

Eine zeitnahe Besprechung erschien in "Allgemeine deutsche Bibliothek. 1765-96" (1792, 110.Bd.,1.St., S.119-141). - Carl Friedrich Bahrdt (1740-1792), radikaler evang. Aufklärungstheologe u. Schriftsteller. (Kommentar, in: Pott, Briefe, Bd.I, Vorrede, S.V/VI. Siehe auch: Th. Hoeren: Präjakobiner in Deutschland Carl Friedrich Bahrdt) - Gering berieben; papierbedingt gebräunt (tls. auch stärker) u. fast durchgehend etwas braunfleckig; unbeschnitten u. tlw. angerändert; gutes Expl. - Sehr selten.
