In Venezia, presso Domenico Occhi, 1795. 1795 2 tomi legati in uno in -8 (cm. 16 x 10,5) pp. VIII - 271 (1 b.); 311 (1).

        Valley of Glencoe

London: Published by Robert Andrew Riddell, 1795. Colour-printed aquatint. Full inscription at bottom of print reads: 'To the Most Noble George Marquis of Tweedale & this View of the Valley of Glencoe is respectfully Inscribed by His Lordships most obedient Humble Servant.' Very good condition apart from some light soiling, minor foxing, and several small losses in the margins. 14 7/8 x 17 1/2 inches. 17 1/2 x 22 1/4 inches. A fine plate of the scenic mountains of Glencoe in the Highlands of western Scotland. This beautiful image is most likely part of a pair prints depicting Glencoe that Riddell published in 1795. Robert Andrew Riddell was a landscape painter, who primarily depicted the scenic topography of Scotland in watercolour. He exhibited one of his works at the Royal Academy in 1793 and gave several of his paintings to the Scottish poet Robert Burns. Archibald Robertson (1765-1835) was a Scottish artist, very talented in both painting and printmaking, who immigrated to America around 1796 (soon after this print was published) where he had a successful career painting miniature portraits on ivory. He also produced a number of topographical prints of New York City places: "Collect Pond" of 1798 among others. A number of his miniature portraits are in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum. This early work of the Highland valley Glen Coe is an extraordinarily fine landscape print, aesthetically superior to Robertson's American prints, and a fine example of colour printed aquatint.

        Schweitzersches Museum. 1.-6. Jahrgang (1783-1790), 24 Bde. . Und: Neues Schweitzersches Museum (1793 - 1796; 5 Bde.).

Kart.-Bde. der Zeit. (3 verschiedene Einbände), Gebrauchspurig, etwas stockfleckig Die Serie, ab 1793/94 "Neues Schweitzersches Museum", erschien bis zum 5. Jahrgang 1796. In seinen polit.

Part II. the Principal Causes of Their Growing Distress and Number, and the consequent increase of the poor-rate. Part III. Means of Relief Proposed. With an appendix; containing a collection of accounts, shewing the earnings and expences of labouring families, in different parts of the kingdom.

Bath, R. Cruttwell, 1795. Large8vo. Bound in later half cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Presentation inscription from the auhtor to top of title page: "From the Author". Title page and first few leafes with brownspotting, otherwise a fine copy. Lacking the half title. Pp. 3-8, 200 + the errata slip inserted after the title page.. First edition of this landmark work in scientific social inquiry; constituting one of the earliest microeconomic- and consumer behavior analyses. Davies profoundly influenced social history and initiated the entire field of consumer behavior analysis, two areas of study which were to dominate 19th century economics, relevant not only to economic and social history, but also to present day economic analysis. Davies's work anticipates Eden's "The State of The Poor" (PMM 249) by two years. In the present work, Davies discusses in detail the causes of the poverty of agricultural labourers in England, linking the high prices of goods with poverty, and proposes measures to relieve the labourers, including linking their daily wage to the price of bread. Davies's observations demonstrated the failings of the contemporary Poor Laws and was by many seen as a direct criticism of the central policy making (or lack thereof). "The differences in consumption of poor and rich families excited attention and often compassion, but apparently never quantitative analysis, for many centuries. Finally in England in the 1790's two very different investigators made extensive compilations of workingmen's budgets. [Davies in 1795, Eden in 1797]. Both were stimulated to this task by the distress of the working classes at this time." (Stigler, The Early History of Empirical Studies of Consumer Behavior). "Was bread Giffen? The demand for food in England circa 1790" (in Review of Economics and Statistics, 1977, Vol. 59, issue 2, pp. 225-29). Koenker developed a problem in statistical demand analysis using samples from the budgets recorded in these works. "Two seminal budget studies by .. .Davies ... and ... Eden are employed ... to investigate the place of bread in the diets of English rural laborers at the end of the eighteenth century. Because of the considerable geographical and temporal dispersion in prices of foodstuffs found in these budgets, they afford a unique opportunity to study the influences of both prices and income on individual household consumption decisions. In particular a test is made of the famous hypothesis, attributed by Marshall to Robert Giffen, that a rise in the price of bread, ceteris paribus, increases its consumption among the lower classes." The budget studies to which Koenker refers comprise the 70-page appendix. Davies began collecting statistical data on the poor in 1787 while a rector in the parish of Barkham, Berkshire. "He collected six detailed budgets of 'typical' agricultural laborers living in Barkham and circulated these budgets widely to friends throughout the kingdom. Some of these correspondents were persuaded to produce similar budgets for their own localities. In 1795 Davies edited 127 of these budgets, wrote a dispassionate plea for a minimum wage law tied to the price of wheat, and published both as The Case of Labourers in husbandry." (Koenker). In making the case for government intervention Davies attacks rampant ignorance and prejudice toward the poor, in particular the notion that the poor are profligate creatures of habit. "It is wonderful how readily even men of sense give in to this censure." (p. 31).Davies's studies "were the first examples of studies in that long and semi-honorable liberal tradition of econometrically snooping into the private lives of the poor. By the mid 19th century such studies were being conducted all over Europe by such notables as Ernst Engel, Frederick Engels, Frederick LePlay and others." (Koenker, Applied Econometrics)David Davies (1742-1819), English clergyman and social commentator, was ordained in 1782 and became the rector of Barkham parish, where he remained incumbent until his death. Första delen i tredje upplagan, andra delen i andra upplagan.

Setterwall 5089. Hesse 1582. [Portrait of Angelica Kauffman and Family]

      c. 1795. Engraving. Printed on laid paper. Collector mark bearing the initials E.O printed in blue ink on verso of sheet. In excellent condition. Image size: 22 x 15 1/16 inches. 25 ¾ x 16 5/8 inches. 31 x 21 ½ inches. An exceedingly rare self/family portrait by Raphael Morghen after a painting by Angelica Kauffman. Though the whereabouts of the original painting is not known, this is clearly a self-portrait of Angelica Kauffman (seated) with what appear to be two grown children and a son-in-law. She holds what is perhaps a portrait of her second husband, Francesco Zucchi, who died in 1795. Her children would have to have been from her unhappy first marriage. There is no title but rather a text in French about how virtue is instilled in children. This impressive portrait was painted by the celebrated artist Angelica Kauffman and engraved by the renowned Italian printmaker Raphael Morghen. Kauffman was a child prodigy, who executed her first commissioned work before the age of thirteen. As a child she traveled through Austria and Italy with her father, the painter Joseph Kauffman. She assisted him by painting the backgrounds of his works, but she quickly received her own commissions and established a reputation for herself as an accomplished painter. In 1766 she traveled to London, where she painted portraits and decorative paintings. She was a close friend of Reynolds and was one of the first female members of the British Royal Academy. Goethe called her "the most accomplished woman in Europe". Raphael Morghen received his first artistic training from his father, the accomplished engraver Filippo Morghen. Like Kauffman, Morghen was also a child prodigy, publishing his first engraving at the age of twelve. By the age of twenty he had established himself as one of the premiere engravers in Europe allowing him to garner countless commissions. He worked in Naples, Rome and Florence and produced over two hundred and fifty prints during his prolific career. Benezit, Dictionnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs et Graveurs

Octavo. A few brown marks, paper flaw on pp. 345/6 with text slightly affected. Overall a good, clean copy. "Unlike Godwin, he does not preach absolute equality, but equality of opportunity. While progress is limited by human nature, as men desire freedom, so they will obtain it and the equality that goes with it. Knowledge of this can come only from proper education, and this explains Condorcet's zeal to improve it. Despite his aversion to religion, his ethical theory stresses human impulses of sympathy and social feelings; it exercised considerable influence on Comte. But it is as the most fully developed exposition of the progress of man that Condorcet's work is now remembered, and it is this which has given it its lasting appeal" (Printing and the Mind of Man, 246).

      B. F. Morks Dord: B. F. Morks, 1795. Bound with: ROUGET de LISLE. Autograph letter signed. 8vo (159 x 99 mm). 136 pp. Half-title, engraved title with revolutionary emblems. Very good, 2 or 3 marginal tears. Hand-colored etching of a Revolutionary tribunal cut round and mounted on front flyleaf. Modern marbled boards, preserving earlier gilt leather lettering-piece on backstrip (head of spine torn). Deckle edges. Tipped onto lower flyleaf is an ALS of Rouget de Lisle, dated 26 September 1827, signed in full Rouget de Lisle, one page, 8vo, with integral address leaf and postal inkstamp (trace of wax seal, small marginal loss to corner of address leaf).*** Rare edition of 38 Revolutionary lyrics, opening with Rouget de Lisle’s “Hymne des Marseillois,” named the national anthem at around the time this collection was printed; with a tipped-in autograph letter signed by its author. Most of the songs supply the name of the popular tune to which they are to be sung. Included are the rare Hymne La Varseillois (Chanté sur différents Théatres, paroles du C. Delrieu, musique du C. Girout); Méhul and Chenier’s Chant du Départ, Hyme de Guerre, by “a Representative of the People”, later the official anthem of the Premier Empire; the popular and brutal Carmagnole des Royalistes, a song which long outlived the Terror; the awkwardly titled Couplets sur le danger de la patrie dans la nuit du 9 au 10 Thermidor; a Chanson Bachique et Patriotique, and various other chants patriotiques or civiques. OCLC lists 5 copies, all in Holland. Addressed to a Monsieur [Sautant?], a court usher (huissier audiencier pres des tribunaux) in Paris, the letter from Rouget de Lisle is an apology for neglecting a certain “trivial affair” which must be concluded with the addressee. He begs the huissier not to think that he has forgotten: "Victim of a difficult situation, duped by his own miscalculations and by the dishonesty of others," he cannot at present proceed, but hopes to do so during the first week of October (Au nom de dieu Monsieur, ne croyez point que je perde de vue la chétive affaire que nous avons à terminer ensemble.

An Historical, Geographical, Commercial, and Philosophical View of the American United States, and of the European Settlements in America and the West Indies

London: Printed for the Editor; J. Ridgway, etc., n.d. [1795]. First edition. Hardcover. Very good. Yes. 4 volumes. 8vo. Publishers original paper boards: grey-blue paper spines with white paper labels printed in black; somewhat brighter blue paper boards. This is apparently an advance copy or a proof set, bound with 21 plates, the table of distances and three leaves of folding tables. The date is taken from Wing, which probably uses the date of the Preface (January 1, 1795). There is no date on the title pages; the plates, where indicated, have a date of 1794; the paper is watermarked 1794. The Preface, as usual for the first edition, is dated 1795, and the penultimate page contains the author's request to those who possessed the number to substitute signature ii,Pp, with the duplicate given in the last number. Collation: Volume 1: 4 page publisher's catalogue; frontispiece plate of the Falls of St Anthony (Niagra); title, viii pp; the following plates: Lama; Buffalo; Elk; Wolverine; Jaguar; Cabiai; Armadillo; Coaita; Mico; Oriole; Alligator; Rattle-snake; 8pp. of subscribers; pp.1-591(1). Volume 2: frontispiece plate of Ohiopyle Falls;(4),8pp; the following plates: Mammoth, Plan of Lystra; Plan of Franklinville, Tobacco, Avocet; 9-493,(1)pp. Volume 3: frontispiece of Black Snake; (4), 280, folding table of distances, 182-525,(1)pp. Volume 4: frontispiece of hooping Crane; (4),296,3 folding leaves, 297-415,(1),95,(1),10pp. This copy is entirely unsophisticated; the engravings are uncolored and are particularly fine, crisp and unworn, indicating an early or even first state. it is bound in original boards presumably before the maps, portraits or plan of Washington were available. A very good set . Actually, considering the nature of the fragile temporary binding, a near fine set. ESTC N17775

Cries of London, Plate 8, Round & Sound Five Pence a Pound Duke Cherries

London: Published by Colnaghi & Co. No. 132 Pall Mall, June 25, 1795. Colour printed stipple engraving. Printed on wove paper. In good condition with the exception of being trimmed just outside the platemark on upper and side margins. A paper loss on the bottom margin has been expertly infilled. Edges of upper right and left corners are missing. Margins are scuffed with slight traces of surface soiling. Image size: 14 x 11 inches. 17 3/8 x 13 inches. A wonderful image of a cherry seller from Wheatley's famous "Cries of London" series. The "Cries of London" was a recurring theme in English printmaking for over three centuries. These colourful prints form a visual record of London's "lower orders", the peddlers, charlatans, street hawkers, milkmaids, and grocers who made their living on the city streets. They give the viewer a glimpse of a long forgotten London where tradesmen would advertise their wares with a musical shout or a melodic rhyme. Different versions of the "Cries" vary in tone from idealistic visions of contented street vendors to satirical caricatures of humorous urban figures. One of the most famous series of "London Cries" is the group of pretty pictures executed by Francis Wheatley. Wheatley's series was immensely popular and enjoyed a long period of success in the English print shops. Between 1792 and 1795 Wheatley exhibited 14 paintings of the "Cries" at the Royal Academy. The pictures attracted a great deal of attention at the exhibition and Colnaghi & Co. quickly agreed to publish a series of engravings after Wheatley's famous series. Only thirteen of the fourteen paintings were engraved and they were offered for sale individually or in a portfolio collection. The prints, which were executed in stipple, were engraved by some the most noted engravers in England; artists such as Luigi Schiavonetti, Giovanni Vendramini and Thomas Gaugain all contributed their work to the series. Complete collections of the "Cries" remained immensely popular, and by 1910 they were fetching more than James Audubon's folio "Birds of America" at auction. This lovely print is plate eight in the series and depicts a cherry seller weighing out a portion of cherries for two eager children. Roberts F. Wheatley, R.A. His Life and Works London, 1910, pp.28-32
