Disbound, with leather spine remnants.. B2v & B3r with a bit of printer misprinting [no text missing]. A VG. copy.. Cumberland was a civil servant in the Board of Trade and Plantations as well as a prolific playwrite thought to have more than fifty plays to his credit. & & This work, one of his more famous, only a "comedy" strictly in the "sentimental" sense common to the time. The play memorable for its main character, Sheva, a wealthy Jewish usurer who, by the end of the convoluted plot, has shown himself to be "the widow's friend, the orphan's father, the poor man's protector, the universal philanthropist." Such a sympathetic depiction of a Jew was rare, if not unprecedented, in the history of the English stage. "The benevolent design of the author appears to have been to rescue an injured and persecuted race of men from the general reproach which has fallen upon them, by exhibiting one of that body as uniting with the peculiarities of his sect eminent virtues." The play was hugely popular throughout Great Britain and America, and was performed to acclaim in Germany and Paris. However, slightly tarnishing Cumberland's humanitarianism was his subsequent bitterness over the lack of "gratitude" (read: emoluments) rendered him by the Jewish community for his efforts on their behalf. "They gave me nothing;" he is reported to have said, "and to tell you the truth I am glad of it; for if they had, in all probability, I should have been indicted for receiving stolen goods." & & Notoriously self-important and thin-skinned, Cumberland was, in 1779, immortalized by Sheridan as the character Sir Fretful Plagiary in The Critic.

The Works of Peter Pindar. In three (four) volumes

London: Printed for John Walker, 1794-96. 4 vols., 8vo, (vol. 1) eng. t/p and port. frontis., 444, (8); eng. t/p, 431, (5); eng. t/p, 495, (6); eng. t/p, 500, (7)pp. Original drab blue boards, white paper backstrips, orange printed labels, a very fine set in original condition (vol. IV with a minor stain on upper cover and a slight tear in the paper backstrip). First collected edition, issued in three volumes (as stated on the first three title-pages) with a supplementary fourth volume here present with an amended title-page. ÒWolcot (1738-1819) was immensely popular for two decades, and up to his death was a well-known and frequently visited figure in literary and artistic circles. Exuberantly vituperative in print as Peter Pindar, Wolcot was of an attractive and sympathetic character, generous to friends and a welcome guest, even in great houses such as Fonthill, where he allayed any anxieties his host William Beckford had by his charming behaviour in a party which included Nelson and Emma Hamilton.Ó He knew or was known to almost every person of note in his time, although today he is virtually unheard of.

        THE SEASONS

London: Printed for Iohn Stockdale, 1794. Hardcover. Quintessential Edwards Fore-Edge Painting. 165 x 98 mm (6 1/2 x 3 7/8"). xix, [i], 256, [32] pp. (apparently published without a printed title). Once extremely pretty and still charming contemporary vellum in the style of--and probably by--Edwards of Halifax, covers with frame formed by plain and decorative gilt rules, including a Greek key roll on a painted band of blue and an elegant cresting border incorporating an undulant beaded roll and leafy garlands, this frame enclosing a center panel with a floral tool pointing diagonally inward at each corner, flat spine ornately gilt in compartments with a lyre centerpiece crossed with trumpets and enclosed by a lozenge of small tools and drawer-handle cornerpieces, title labelling on a blue wash, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. WITH A PLEASING FORE-EDGE PAINTING OF AN ENGLISH LANDSCAPE containing typical Edwards features (see below). With extra engraved title page (featuring oval portrait of Thomson) and 14 engraved plates after Thomas Stothard, as called for. Front pastedown with heraldic bookplate bearing the motto "Confido." Front flyleaf with early(?) 19th century ink inscription to J. B. Macbride from F. Pickford. Vellum slightly soiled, front board a little splayed, blue paint mostly rubbed off the titling label and a bit faint in a couple of small spots in the cover border (spine gilt also somewhat dulled or lost), but the original unsophisticated binding solid and still retaining much of its appeal as an Edwards example, and, most importantly, with the painting in excellent state. Title page and frontispiece a little foxed, minor offsetting from plates, other trivial imperfections, but a very pleasing copy internally, the leaves clean and fresh. In terms of binding design, artistic representation, and the work chosen for special treatment, this is a quintessential example of a fore-edge painting done by its foremost exponent and practitioner. The Edwards of Halifax bindery was founded by William Edwards (1723-1808) and continued by several of his brothers, half-brothers, and sons (by far the most important of the sons being Thomas, who lived from 1762-1834). This famous firm produced a number of important innovations in binding design, the most significant being the idea of concealing a painting under the gilt of the fore edge. This hidden treasure could be revealed, once the edge was fanned out, as a special surprise element of the volumes they bound--typically in Etruscan calf, or, as here, in vellum decorated with gilt and blue wash. In its content and style, the present fore-edge painting is so typical of the scenes rendered by the Edwards workshop that we feel confident in asserting that the edge must have been decorated at or near the time of the binding. As is the case in the majority of painted Edwards scenes, there is a body of water to the right and some important structure to the left (this is often a stately home, but sometimes--as here--is part of a ruined church or castle). The water is spanned by an arched stone bridge (another frequent visual ingredient). Clusters of leafy trees complete the picture, and a fair blue sky with puffy clouds reigns over the entire tranquil setting. The soft colors used, primarily blues, greens, and grays, are also typcial of the Edwards palette. First published in 1730, "The Seasons" was considered in its day to be the most influential poem in blank verse between Milton and the Romantics. The poem finds beauty in the wild places, as well as the cultivated fields, and sees in nature the reflection of the creator's bounty. The poem was incredibly popular, found in a vast number of English homes, whether cottages or castles, and was a popular choice for embellishment with fore-edge paintings.

A New and Correct Map of Scotland or North Britain with all the Post and Military Roads, Divisions, &c

London: Sayer, 1794. unbound. Map, in two sheets. Copper plate engraving with original outline hand color. Each image measures 24.25" x 21.25". This large-scale wall map of Scotland depicts the country in intricate detail. Based on the work of Marcus Armstrong, this two-part map has a particular focus on military and post roads. Hand-colored lines divide and subdivide shires, mountains are depicted pictorially, and bodies of water such as lochs and firths are all labeled. At the upper right is a large inset of the "The Islands of Shetland or Zetland." The upper left corner contains a decorative title cartouche, and the map's lower left contains a key of "Distances of the Principal Stages on the Great Roads Leading from Edinburgh." The map is in good condition with some chips and stains in the margins . Minor offsetting throughout. Robert Laurie (c. 1755 - 1836) and James Whittle (1757-1818) were London-based map and atlas publishers active in the late 18th and early 19th century. Their firm combined Laurie's engraving skills with Whittle's social contacts and print sales experience. Together, they published numerous maps and atlases, often enlisting prominent cartographers such as Kitchin, Faden, Jefferys and others to update and modify their plates. This large map is an impressive example of their work.

Provenance: Royal College of Surgeons, gift of C. Somerville-Large to the library (bookplate to inner cover). A very good copy with bright, clean plates. Collated complete. ----

Heirs of Hippocrates 1187; Russell, British Anatomy 60; Wellcome II, p.137. -

FIRST EDITION. Encouraged by an artistic mother, John Bell had received early training in drawing. He was one of the first to apply anatomical teachings to surgery. From 1786-1799 he was Scotland's premier teacher of surgical anatomy, and his anatomical writings and illustrations were geared to the needs of the operative surgeon. Bell's atlas of the bones, muscles, and joints, illustrated mostly with his own engravings and etchings after his own paintings, represented a new, more realistic and less idealized style of anatomical illustration. Bell's illustrations are some of the most striking in the entire literature, although not to everyone's taste: "Certainly they have the immediacy of drawings made in the dissecting rooms of late Georgian Edinburgh. Some are quite gruesome and even perverted ... In their context they are admirable..."(Roberts & Tomlinson, p. 491). With some of the most striking illustrations in the entire medical literature

The spine of the second volume should read "VOL. III & IV" but the binder has omitted to stamp "& IV", on the second volume, also the leather around the title has lightened slightly, a couple of pages slightly dusty, very occasional slight fingermark, light brown staining to 2 lower margins, small ink spot to 1 lower margin, occasional very pale browning to margins, 16 small ink notes (1 or 2 words written above the text), small closed tear to 1 margin, neatly repaired, small hole in 1 page with loss of page number, small chip to 1 fore-edge, fore-edge margin to 3 plates browned, inner margin browned on 1 plate, very pale offsetting on a few plates, tiny hole in 1 plate margin. Bindings tight and firm. A very good sturdy set. The contents of each volume are set out on the half-titles, Volume I: Arithmetical and Mechanical Experiments; Volume II: Experiments in Optics, Chromatics and Acoustics; Volume III: Electrical and Magnetical Experiments; Volume IV: Experiments in Pneumatics, Hydrology, and Pyrotechnics. With an Appendix of Miscellaneous Recreations. This Appendix (pages 175-295), contains the conjuring, magic and card tricks, "Several of the Recreations in this Appendix have, in fact, but little relation to experimental philosophy, especially those that depend on a dextrous manoeuvre; but as experiments of this kind are commonly found in books of mathematical recreations, it seemed requisite to insert some of the most entertaining among them at the end of this treatise" (author's note). See Toole Stott, A Bibliography of English Conjuring 1581-1876, page 137 No. 392. For the fireworks section (pages 127-171), see Chris Philip, A Bibliography of Firework Books, page 73, No. H110.2-5. Philip points out that Hooper states that much of this work stems from Guyot (Nouvelles Recreations Physiques et Mathematiques - 1786). "We shall here add the description of a new method of imitating artificial fireworks, which appears to be the invention of the ingenious M. Guyot" (Volume IV page 156). A fine, broad margined copy. ---- Ferguson I, 472; Cole 717; Partington 3:662; Sinkankas 3430; DSB VII, 388-89. - SECOND EDITION. First published in 1784, "the first systematic work on the subject in English" (Ferguson). The revised second edition reflects Kirwan's abandonment of the phlogiston theory. It is much expanded, featuring the Leskean cabinet of 7331 mineral specimens. Kirwan's work was the first systematic treatise on mineralogy in English. Viewing mineralogy as a branch of chemistry, Kirwan described minerals by their chemical composition, combined with the Wernerian method of using external features and properties as a means of identification (Sinkankas 3430).
