The Dance of Death, Painted by H. Holbein and Engraved by W. Hollar

, ca. 1794. ca. 1794. Hardcover. Very Good. Hardcover 12mo, ND, but cited variously as 1789 and 1794 (we lean toward 1794). 81pp+ (last second not paginated). Bound in half leather with a more recent, somewhat amateurish, spine; marbled boards. Housed in a presumably later plain-paneled dust jacket with handsome gilt spine. Featuring beautiful engravings by W. Hollar after Holbein's paintings, originally engraved ca. 1647-1651. All in very good condition with light rubbing wear to the volume and DJ, light soil and foxing. Front hinge is cracked but firmly holding. The volume contains several sections, including a preface, note on the frontispiece, descriptions of the cuts, and "The Daunce of Machabree..." A newspaper clipping dated August 1884 is affixed to the front flyleaf, a "letter to the editor" from the owner of a 1566 Klauber painting of the Dance of Death. There is also a bookplate and a bookseller's sticker on the front pastedown, another old bookplate on the verso of the flyleaf. The date is written on the title page and one of the plates has perhaps a translation of the caption, "He shall die without instruction..." A note accompanying the volume remarks: "Altho this edition is without date, it was published (in duodecimo) about 1794. The preliminary observations relating to the Dance of Death are written by Mr. F. Douce, who, in 1833 published a more elaborate edition with 47 plates, made by various engravers. These latter plates are pronounced inferior to the Hollar plates. A copy of this edition is in the British Museum bearing the date 1793, altho Mr. Douce says the work published 'about 1794'." Overall a very rare, desirable volume with wonderful engravings.

THE TRIAL OF DANIEL ISAAC EATON, FOR PUBLISHING A SUPPOSED LIBEL, COMPARING THE KING OF ENGLAND TO A GAME COCK IN A PAMPHLET INTITULED POLITICS FOR THE PEOPLE; OR HOG'S WASH AT JUSTICE HALL.

London published. New York: Reprinted for L. Wayland, 1794. - 48pp. Dbd. Lightly tanned and foxed. Good. First American edition. Eaton, the indefatigable English radical and publisher, was indicted for libel. His crime was "intending to scandalize, traduce, and villify" the King, and represent him as "sanguinary, tyrannical, oppressor, cruel, and despotic; and thereby to stir up and excite Discontents and Seditions amongst the Subjects of our said Lord the King." The jury returned with a verdict of "not guilty" in about an hour. The trial had immediate resonance in the United States, where the political divisions of Federalist and Anti-Federalist were heating up, and the idea of "sedition" as a way to suppress the opposition was soon to find voice in the Alien and Sedition Acts. Only a handful of copies in ESTC. EVANS 26930. COHEN 13332. ESTC W28193.

The Elements and Practice of Rigging and Seamanship

London.: David Steel., 1794.. London.: David Steel., 1794.. b/w frontis and 94 b/w plates, many folding and two volvelles. 4to. Two vols. xv, 425; 147 pp. First edition of an early and important assemblage of shipbuilding knowledge. Material covered includes mast making, rope making, anchor making, sail making, block making, rigging, naval tactics, damage control and dimensions of standard and running rigging. This work is justly famous for its dozens of plates illustrating fine points of sail making, rigging, ship building and naval tactics. See MacDonald 270. JCB Maritime History Catalog 175. Bound in contemporary full calf, original gilt decorated backstrips and spine labels professionally laid down. This set is in beautiful condition, with plates and text fresh and clean, and volvelles on the naval tactics plates intact and operable. Additionally, an early reader has written detailed tables of the dimensions of all the sails on “Le Tonnant 2261 Tons” (she was a French 3rd Rate, 80 guns, captured in 1798 at the Battle of the Nile) and “Magnificent 1621 Tons” (a 3rd Rate 74, wrecked in 1804 near Brest) in manuscript on two blank pages at the front of volume one. This anonymous writer was probably Admiral William Carnegie, the Earl of Northesk. He was third in command behind Nelson and Collingwood at Trafalgar, and his bookplate on the front pastedown of each volume features the motto “Trafalgar” in the middle of the central shield. For an account of his key role at Trafalgar, see Ralfe’s “Naval Biography of Great Britain,” Vol II, pp. 402-403. A pencil inscription on the title page of vol. I indicates that subsequent owners were Capts. Green and Ricketts(?), probably dating from the 1840s. An outstanding association copy of a rare book.

Nel 1807, sempre a Parma per i Tipi Bodoniani, uscì una terza impressione del poema.         Elegant Epistles being a Copious Collection of Familiar and Amusing Letters

London - T. Longman, B. Law and Son, J. Dodsley et al., 1794. London - T. Longman, B. Law and Son, J. Dodsley et al., 1794 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A highly detailed set of letters, selected for the improvement of young persons, and for general entertainment. New edition. Featuring an engraved title page. While not ignoring the classical writers, one of Knox's principle aims was to identify and introduce into the canon those elements of modern literature he believed of particular benefit for 'the commerce of ordinary life'. His focus also resulted in a noticeably generous coverage of eighteenth-century women writers, including Elizabeth Montague, Anna Seward, and the ladies Wortley Montagu, Luxburgh and Bradshaigh, as well as a number of letters between Doctor Johnson and Mrs Thrale. Appreciative of established talents and alert, here and in other works, to the potential of female students, Knox combined the promotion of modern women's writing with an ongoing campaign against sources of false learning. (DNB)Condition: In contemporary tree calf binding. Externally, rubbed with slight wear to the spine and boards, loss to the head and tail of the spine, as well as the spine label. Both boards are held by the cords only. Internally, generally firmly bound, although with the frontispiece working loose. Bright, although with occasional instances of spotting. Overall: GOOD ONLY..

Travels of Anacharsis the Younger in Greece

London - G. G. and J. Robinson, 1794. London - G. G. and J. Robinson, 1794 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. An early copy of Jean-Jaques Barthelemy's magnum opus, Voyage du jeune Anarcharsis en Grce, or The Travels of Anarchasis in Greece. Second edition. The hero, a young Scythian descended from the famous philosopher Anacharsis, is supposed to repair to Greece for instruction in his early youth, and after making the tour of her republics, colonies and islands, to return to his native country and write this book in his old age, after the Macedonian hero had overturned the Persian empire. In the manner of modern travellers, he gives an account of the customs, government, and antiquities of the country he is supposed to have visited. A copious introduction supplies whatever may be wanting in respect to historical details, while various dissertations on the music of the Greeks, on the literature of the Athenians, and on the economy, pursuits, ruling passions, manners, and customs of the surrounding states supply ample information on the subjects of which they treat. Translated from the French. With half-titles. Jean-Jacques Barthlemy (January 20, 1716 April 30, 1795) was a French writer and numismatist. Modern scholarship has superseded most of the details in the Voyage, but the author himself did not imagine his book to be a register of accurately ascertained facts. Rather, he intended to afford to his countrymen, in an interesting form, some knowledge of Greek civilization. Complete in seven volumes. Condition: In contemporary tree calf bindings. Externally, sound, though with some rubbing to the extremities. Seven joints cracked, withthree hinges tender, and one joint has failed, with the board detached. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean, with just a few instances of foxing. Overall: GOOD due to boards but with a VERY GOOD INDEED interior..

"During the turbulent years of the French Revolution, Méhul shrewdly selected subjects for his operas allegorically suitable to the times, but he also wrote in a melodious and forceful style that pleased those who sought artistic entertainment" (Baker's Biographical Dictionary of Musicians) Grand admirateur de Gluck, qu'il avait rencontré dans sa jeunesse, Méhul laissa sa marque au moyen d'importants opéras comme celui-ci, ainsi que de plusieurs symphonies qui le placent parmi les inspirateurs de Wagner, Berlioz et Beethoven. Cachets anciens de la Bibliothèque du Conservatoire Impérial de Musique. Signature autographe du libraire Cousineau. Papier assez fortement bruni. Sur Méhul cf. New Grove Dictionary ("Méhul was an innovator") et Baker's Biographical Dictionary of Musicians, p.1060. [Attributes: First Edition]

Widely regarded as the most comprehensive and definitive work on the subject and associated disciplines; purchase, maintenance, and repair, coach-smithing, coach-painting, coach-trimming, and coach harness-making, etc. A monumental and historic work which provides vast cultural insight, as well as historical perspective from which the evolution of modern motorized transportation may be traced.& & Joseph T. Cunningham (1843-1914)& Was the President of James Cunningham, Son and Company of Rochester , New York, inheriting that position upon the death of his Father and Company founder, James, in 1886.Under his guidance, Cunningham grew to become the preeminent carriagemaker in the United States. Favored both for their hand crafted quality and their style, Cunningham coaches were the preferred conveyance of both personal owners and coach liveries throughout the country. With the dawn of the 20th century,Joseph foresaw the necessity to switch to the production of horseless carriages, Cunningham started automobile production in 1908 with gasoline-engined cars. that sold at approximately $3,500, a very high price at the time. The distinguished Cunningham motor cars of pre—depression years were primarily handmade with materials of highest quality, as well as obsessive attention to detail and luxury. They were rightfully called the "American Rolls Royce" and at $9,000 in 1920, were priced as such. Cunningham owners were a veritable Who's Who of the World's political, business and entertainment elite as well as Indian princes, European royalty, Latin American millionaires and politicians, Japanese industrialists, and even Chinese warlords. The company also ventured into design and production of Military vehicles, including prototyping of early tanks as well as construction of the first M1 Armored car.Joseph Cunningham retired from the Company in 1909. To this day, the name Cunningham is synonymous with the most elegant and advanced examples of carriage and automobile transportation. & & Covers variously rubbed can cracked at joins but well situated and very firmly attached by cords.Corners bumped.
