The Life of Samuel Johnson, LL.D. Comprehending an Account of His Studies and Numerous Works, in Chronological Order The Whole Exhibiting a View of Literature and Literary Men in Great Britain for Near a Century During Which He Flourished. In Two Volumes. [Together with:] The Principal Corrections and Additions to the first edition of Mr. Boswell's Life of Dr. Johnson.

London: by Henry Baldwin, for Charles Dilly, 1791 & 1793 - Together 2 works bound in 2 volumes, quarto (275 x 217 mm). Contemporary tree calf, neatly rebacked with original spines laid down, red morocco title labels renewed to style, oval red numbering pieces laid down on black morocco labels, richly gilt in compartments, sides bordered in gilt with Greek key roll, plain endpapers and edges. Corners worn, some foxing, heaviest near the portrait, generally a very good set. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Johnson, round robin and handwriting plates in vol. II. Second state of vol. I (with "give" spelt correctly on p. 135). First editions, presentation copies, both the Life of Johnson and Principal Corrections with individual autograph presentation inscriptions from the author to Andrew Lumisden (1720–1801), a friend of Boswell's who had assisted in preparing the Life by deciphering Johnson's manuscript notebook of his trip to France in October–November 1775. This assistance is acknowledged in print at the footnote on p. 511, vol. I: "My worthy and ingenious friend, Mr. Andrew Lumisdaine [sic], by his accurate acquaintance with France, enabled me to make out many proper names, which Dr. Johnson had written indistinctly, and sometimes spelt erroneously". The autograph inscriptions read, on the Life, "To Andrew Lumisden Esq: from his old and much obliged friend The Authour", and on the Principal Corrections, "To Andrew Lumisden Esq: from his obliged friend The Authour." Andrew Lumisden was a fascinating character. Educated like Boswell for a respectable career in the law, Lumisden threw it all away in 1745 for the Jacobite cause. He served as the under-secretary and the first clerk of the treasury to the Young Pretender throughout the campaign of 1745–6 and was present at Culloden. Adopting a variety of disguises after the battle, he managed to escape to Paris, where he entered the service of the Old Pretender. He and Boswell became acquainted in Rome in 1765. Lumisden was still in Rome on 23 January 1766 to greet Charles Edward on his accession, but by now felt only a thinly veiled contempt for the Young Pretender and was dismissed from his service on 8 December 1768. From 1769 to 1773 Lumisden resided in Paris, where he gradually distanced himself from the Stuart cause. A member of the royal and antiquaries' societies of Edinburgh, Lumisden corresponded with Boswell, as well as Joseph Banks, Adam Smith, and David Hume. He received a full pardon from the British government in 1778, having done his personal cause some good by buying up a collection of rare books for the Prince of Wales, and in due course returned to Edinburgh. With the bookplates of Sir Thomas Andrew Lumisden Strange (1756–1841) and Thomas Lumisden Strange (1808–1884), respectively nephew and grandnephew of Andrew Lumisden; signed by Thomas Lumisden Strange in each volume and with a note on Boswell's Life copied by him from Samuel Parr. Presentation copies of the Life are rare in commerce. The last copy at auction, that given to Boswell's executor Sir William Forbes of Pitsligo was inscribed only on a note tipped in before the title (Sotheby's, 13 December 2016, lot 45). Prior to that, the only other presentation copy sold at auction was that given to John Douglas, Bishop of Carlisle, who appears in a short episode in the work (Sotheby's NY, 1998). Pottle notes other presentation copies given to John Wilkes, Warren Hastings, Sir William Scott, and James Boswell the younger. Pottle 79; Rothschild 463 & 466; Tinker 338.         The Ladies' Assistant For Regulating and Supplying the Table; Being a Complete System of Cookery, &c. Containing The most Select Bills of Fare, properly disposed, For Family Dinners of Five Dishes To Two Courses of Eleven and Fifteen; With Bills of Fare for Suppers, from F

London: J. Walter, 1793. Seventh Edition. Hardcover. Very good. [18], 484, [21], 23, [1] p. 21 cm. Half leather with marbled boards. Corners worn and boards a bit rubbed. Cracks in leather spine. Ink signature on front free endpaper. Ink date at bottom of title page. Some spotting, ink marks, and pencil scribbling throughout, but rarely with loss of text. Small chip from bottom of p. 257 and small tear in bottom of p. 263. If the distribution of stains in a cookbook is any indication of the popularity of the recipes, then the marks on pages 282-283, 456-457, and 465 suggest the Fricassee of Pigeons, Pine-Apple Brandy, and Raisin Wine in Mrs. Mason's book must be excellent. The first 117 pages of the book consist of Bills of Fare, giving suggestions for menus from family dinners of five dishes to sumptuous feasts. Desserts such as Almond Cheesecake and Floating Island of Chocolate still sound mouthwatering today but Fricassee of Lamb Stones and Eel Spitchcocked may not appeal to modern taste. See rear for comments on lead poisoning, the adulteration of flour, and water from the Thames, which is "said to become offensive in seven or eight days ... if it be kept in unseasoned casks" (p. 483).

Fables With a life of the Author and embellished with 70 Plates

2 vols. London: John Stockdale, 1793. 2 vols. in one, royal 8vo, xi, 225; vii, 187,(1, advertisement) pp. Engraved title to each part, frontispiece to vol. I, and 70 plates including 12 by Blake. Old calf rebacked, lower cover rehinged, scuffed and untidy, internally very good without the usual browning and offsetting. First edition with Blake's plates. "The plates in this famous edition are free adaptations from the designs of Kent, Wootton, and Gravelot, who illustrated the earlier printings of Gay's Fables. William Blake completely redesigned, and redrew, the 12 images for which he is responsible, and is listed among the subscribers to the edition, as are the other engravers who worked on this project. Blake engraved the plates opposite pp. 1, 29, 59, 73, 99, 109, 125, 133 and 181 in volume one; and those opposite pp. 1, 105 and 145 in volume two." (Sotheran's).         AN ANSWER TO PAIN'S [sic] RIGHTS OF MAN. By John Adams, Esq. Originally Printed in America

London: Reprinted for Owen Picadilly, 1793. [2],34pp. Original plain wrappers, stitched, as issued. Spine perishing, light wear at edges. Contemporary ownership inscription on front wrapper. Light tanning, occasional faint foxing. A very good copy, in original condition. Untrimmed. Second London printing of seven letters by John Quincy Adams, first published in Boston's COLUMBIAN SENTINEL between 1791 and 1793. This is one of five editions published in London and Dublin in the same year; there was no separate American edition. The letters were first attributed to John Adams, but were written by his son at the age of twenty-six. Adams' letters concern the French Revolution and the questions those events raised about the nature of good government. Like Thomas Paine, the younger Adams supports "the downfall of the arbitrary system of Government in France," but is repelled by Paine's assertion of an "infallible criterion of orthodoxy." In examining the RIGHTS OF MAN, he rejects the idea that England should "destroy their present form of government, and asserts that the English have exercised their inalienable rights and have chosen their own form of government. He then goes on to recount its perceived virtues, in opposition to Paine's glorification of "the mob," which will eventually destroy individual liberty. A scarce printing of one of John Quincy Adams' earliest published works. ESTC locates six copies in American institutions. ESTC N30406. WISE & CRONIN 14.

An Essay Upon Gardening, containing a catalogue of exotic plants for the stoves and green-houses of the British gardens..

York: G. Peacock, 1793. Some light scattered foxing.. Quarto, 3 folding plates, contemporary (?original) marbled boards, calf spine renewed. A singular work written and published at the cusp of the fashion for exotics, which provides a most interesting overview of the state of play in England in the early 1790s. Richard Steele, a Yorkshire gardener who lived and worked around Thirsk, wrote the work as "an attempt to aid in the management of that most elegantly-refined and fascinating department of the Garden, where the prodigious variety of rare plants that have been introduced into this kingdom, from the hot regions of the terraqueous globe, are deposited...".What is immediately noticeable is that while there are established collections from the East and West Indies, and while British gardens were beginning to have really substantial collections of Cape plants, there is still only a handful of Australian plants available for cultivation. Published in the same year as Smith's Botany, this work describes six Australian plants, all apparently collected before the First Fleet era. The Eucalyptus obliqua noticed by Steele, for example, was the first major plant to be routinely noticed as growing in England, and is known to have been collected in Tasmania by Furneaux in 1774 and Cook in 1777, being first figured in France in 1788. Thus, while Steele's work includes notes on how best to grow each species, most of the notes on Australian plants display some uncertainty, as with the entry on the eucalpyt: "I cannot speak with certainty as to the propagation of this plant; but most of the South Sea woody plants will grow from cuttings, with the same treatment as cuttings from plants of similar latitudes in the other hemisphere."The work concludes with a two-page notice on the "Directions for the Preservation of Seeds, &c." on long voyages, and it also includes a most interesting essay on how to get the best out of the "Stove", recommending that one about 160 feet long (!) would be appropriate for "containing a prodigious collection of plants for the satisfaction of the curious." The essay on the Stove dwells particularly on the growing of grapes and vines, with asides on exotic fruits such as the pineapple, at this time beginning to be regarded as the pinnacle of the art of the exotic gardener. In this regard the three plates are significant, the first two reproducing Steele's notion of the ideal stove and greenhouse, while the third shows the more modest greenhouse actually built by Richard Anthony Salisbury, of note because he was one of those who did in fact cultivate Australian plants, and who published with William Hooker the Paradisus Londinensis (1805-1809).The subscribers - some 275 - would probably have accounted for the bulk of the edition, and it has proved to be a rare work on the market. Steele's essay was published in York, and there is certainly a northern bias to the subscribers: it's not often that a work of this type and date would have been subscribed to by folks such as "James Banks, Esq., of Pontefract", but not his namesake Sir Joseph. Many are gardeners to large estates, or architects, and there are a goodly number of other middle class professionals: surgeons, attorneys, and the like. Among his contemporaries Richard Anthony Salisbury is probably the most prominent, and there is also the Duke of Portland, whose house Bulstrode was a centre for natural history in this era, largely due to the efforts of Margaret Bentinck, Duchess of Portland (1715-1785). Provenance: Marmaduke Jerard Grimston, of Grimston Garth and Kilnwick (1826-1879, like the author a Yorkshireman), with his armorial bookplate.

Allgemeine Geschichte der Natur in alphabetischer Ordung; fortgesetzt von einer Gesellschaft Gelehrten, und herausgegeben von Johann Georg Krünitz

Berlin and Stettin: Pauli 1774 - 1793 - 11 Bände (vollständig) - With 559 (plus 12 additional), mostly coloured engraved plates, eleven engraved portraits and engraved title vignette. Contemporary calf, gilt spine in compartments, two morocco labels. Browning here and there due to paper quality, otherwise an excellent most complete copy Very rare in complete form. With all plates mentioned and 12 additional plates with shells probably from another work bound in. Allgemeine Geschichte der Natur ("The General History of Nature) by Fried-rich Heinrich Martini and J. Georg Krünitz is one of a number of large, comprehensive dictionaries of nature that were published during the 18th century. Written in the style of the French dictionaries like Valmont de Bomare's, this work on natural history and botany covers animals, entomology, shells, plants, geology, minerals, fossils, and more, with many of the illustrative plates designed by the distinguished artists of the age. These plates were mostly engraved by J. Schmidt in Berlin. Unlike many of the contemporary French works, however, this book is alphabetical in ist treatment of the subject. Apparently it was not a profitable venture either, and was never completed, with the 11 volumes that appeared extending only from the letter A through entries beginning with Coquille’. The compilers of dictionaries had two large banks from which to rob: Linnaeus' Systema Naturæ and Buffon's Histoire Naturelle. They would abstract and arrange the contents of these works alphabetically. As a result the reader got Linnaeus' exactness and Buffon's fine writing in both science and literature. Creation of such dictionaries reached ist zenith with the extravagant works of Houttyun's Natuurkyke Historie of Uitvoerige Beschryving der Dieren, Planten en Mineralen, published in thirty-seven volumes (1761 - 1785), and Valmont de Bomare's Dictionaire Raisoné Universel d'Histoire Naturelle, that appeared in at least five editions, and in Danish, Dutch, Italian and Russian translations. Martini's Allgemeine Geschichte der Natur in alfabetischer Ordnung (1774), which ambi-tiously built on Bomare's Dictionaire and invited ist readers to participate in making a new edition by filling out pages left blank for the purpose. Friedrich Heinrich Wilhelm Martini (1729 1778) was a german physician, translator of natural history works and shell collector. Martini who worked as physician in Hamburg, before relocating to Berlin where he founded the important and influential Gesellschaft naturforschender Freunde. Martini began to publish in 1769 a famous book on shells: Neues systematisches Conchylien-Cabinet published by Raspe at Nürnberg. But he died after the publication of the third volume. His work was continued by Johann Hieronymus Chemnitz (1730 -1800) who added eight volumes between 1779 and 1795. Even though the work does not use the binomial system both are considered author of the new species figured. His Allgemeine Geschichte der Natur incorporates many articles on shells and images of specimens from different shell collections.- Dance. Shell Collecting. An illustrated History (1966); Zischka, Allgemeines Gelehrten-Lexikon, 208; Nissen, ZBI 2721 (556 plates).; Hagen, 523 (only 511 plates). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Ensaio sobre a extensão dos limites da beneficencia a respeito, assim dos homens, como dos mesmos animaes [.].

Lisbon, Regia officina typografica, 1793. - 8vo. XVI, 309, [3 blank] pp. With woodcut coat of arms of the Academia real das sciencias de Lisboa on title-page. Contemporary mottled, tanned sheepskin, richly gold-tooled spine, gilt edges. Very rare first and only edition of the Portuguese translation of a work on charity and philanthropy written by the Moravian count and traveller Leopold von Berchtold (1759-1809). It deals with the history and philosophy of philanthropy, and touches various subjects. There is a chapter on the improvement of the condition of black slaves, closing with a section on manumission, a chapter on prison reform and one on animal welfare. Berchtold also gives examples of charity among various societies, including the Turks, Arabs, Persians and Indians, probably drawing from his own experiences: Berchtold travelled through Europe and the Middle East for 17 years. Apparently Berchtold translated the book himself during his stay in Portugal, since he incorporated his observations on Portuguese charity and apologizes for the imperfections in his Portuguese. The original German work, Versuch die Gränzen der Wohlhätigkeit gegen Menschen und Thiere zu erweitern, was published in 1789 at Vienna. Berchtold also wrote several other works, mostly travel guides, of which his Essay to direct and extent the inquiries of patriotic travellers is his best known. - With the bookplate of "Livraria do Advogado, Abel Maria Jordão Paiva Mano" on pastedown, and a note on the blank final page stating the book was acquired at auction no 212, lot 340 of A.[rnaldo] H.[enriques] d'Oliv.[eira] in October of 1958. Binding worn along the extremities with wormholes in spine. Only slightly browned with some minor foxing. Overall a very good copy. Porbase (1 copy); Worldcat (5 copies); for the author: J. Paris, Delespinasse, Delaunaux, Nepveu, the author (printed by Joseph-Gaspard Gillé fils), 1813. 12mo (18 x 10.5 cm). With 8 numbered engraved plates, namely a frontispiece view of a skating rink with many skaters, engraved by Ambroise Tardieu, and 7 images of individual skaters, each in a different pose. Set in roman and italic types, with a few lines in a "ronde" script type. Later blue paper wrappers. Preserved in modern half morocco slipcase.

Foster, Bibliography of Skating 35; Lipperheide Thb 7; cf. Brown, Ice-Skating, pp. 57-64; for Gillé: Lane, Early type specimens, pp. 277-279; CERL Thesaurus. First edition of the first French ice-skating manual, describing many movements and poses with an emphasis on grace and form, illustrated with 8 engraved plates. Unlike English skaters, who advocated a more straightforward approach, Garcin compared skating with dancing, stressing grace and artistry rather than technique and precision. It is dedicated to Mademoiselle Gosselin, principal dancer at the Académie Imperial de Musique. One of the earliest separate works in any language devoted entirely to ice-skating.The printer, described only as Gillé fils, is better known as the typefounder and punchcutter Joseph-Gaspard Gillé, and the book therefore serves as a display of types that almost certainly come from his foundry. His father, also Joseph, was the leading French typefounder and punchcutter between Fournier and Didot, and Joseph-Gaspard produced some of the best types following the Didot style. He added a small printing office to the foundry ca. 1793. Among its few productions are several printed for Napoleon's Imperial government. Although awarded medals and honours in 1801 and 1808, Gillé went bankrupt in the year the present book appeared. He attempted to revive his firm in 1816 but remained in difficulties and seems to have no imprints after 1818. From 1827, the year after Gillé's death, the foundry was continued by the writer Honoré de Balzac and his associates. Balzac's Illusions perdues , written in 1837 and set in 1821/22, refers to the "ronde" script types of Gillé, former printer to the Emperor, and contrasts his excellent and up-to-date types with the outdated work of a provincial typefounder. In very good condition, with only very minor foxing and one or two pages very slightly dirty.         Three Letters Addressed to a Friend in India, by a Proprietor. Principally on the Subject of Importing Bengal Sugars into England.

London, J. Debrett, 1793. - 8vo. 88 pp. With a folding table "Profit and loss on sugars imported from Begal" after p. 10. Disbound with remains of a calf spine. First edition. - "It is contended, in these letters, that the India company are already in possession of exclusive privileges which many deem injurious to the public, and that it would be gross impolicy to invest them with the power of converting the sugar trade into a monopoly. An equalization of duties is deemed both unnecessary and impolitic; unneccessary, because the East India company can bring sugars to market with a profit subject to the present high duties, as long as it can be for the general interest of the nation, that they should so do; and impolitic, because the East India company would totally ruin the West India islands if they can import sugars to any extet for which a demand can be found" (The Analytical Review 15 [1793], p. 523). - Title a little spotty; slight dampstain in the upper margin.
